Why Use Websites and Video in Extension Education ?
1. Provide for alternative learning styles – “A Picture’s
Worth a Thousand Words!”
2. Disseminate information in a timely fashion – “Just in
Time”.
3. Allow growers to view and review the information at
any time – “On Demand”. - particularly critical for
complicated issues such as insect development models or
fruit thinning.
Web Links & Video Clips: New Tools For Teaching Fruit IPM
2007 – Focus on Entomology & Horticulture Issues
1. Timely discussion of specific issues & biology.
2. IPM, scouting, use of modeling for insect development;
predict events.
3. Discuss management options and timings for pest control or
chemical fruit thinning.
4. Incorporate text, charts/graphs, still photos.

Tree Fruit Recorded Message for Wednesday, April 25, 2007..Pear Psylla Control:Peter Jentsch reports that adult pear psylla have now completed their migration into pear orchards from surrounding woodlands. Green cluster to white bud is a good window to reduce the adult population with an insecticide application.
Control options include the pyrethroids (Ambush, Asana, Danitol, Pounce, Proaxis or Warrior), Actara, Assail, Calypso and Esteem. Actara, Assail and Calypso are neonicontinoids and their use pre-bloom may upset your bee suppliers this season so check with them first. Research has shown that the addition of PBA (trade name Insight) greatly enhances the effectiveness of pyrethroids in controlling pear psylla.
You can view a video of Peter discussing the use of pyrethroids for psylla control at the following link (you will need a high-speed connection and a movie player like Quick Time): http://hudsonvf.cce.cornell.edu/galleryphotos/video/Pyrethroids%20For%20Adult%20Psylla%20Mgt%204-23-07.mov
Grower Viewing Problems Solutions
Software glitches Download most recent QuickTime software update
Takes too long to download Minimize file size(sacrifice clarity and picture size)
Too busy to view video Keep them short and to the point!
Lack computer knowledge Training presentations / workshops
Using video in extension education
2008 Hudson Valley Research & Extension
• Continue to post scouting information and experiment
with the use of video to make timely recommendations.
• Create videos of field workshops, seminars & specific
“how-to” topics (grafting, tall spindle planting system).
• Looking for grower feedback on value, possible
improvements, new ideas and ways to help.
