Fall back...
With the weather being so kind to us these last few weeks it is hard to believe we will be putting the clocks back an hour at the end of this month! On the plus side, we’ll enjoy an extra hour in bed OR how will you use that extra hour?
The Community Centre has kindly given us their up-to-date timetable for both centres. An opportunity for you to take up a new hobby, meet some new people and fill those winter evenings with fun things to do. Tickets for the Christmas party will go on sale at the end of this month too.
There is a delicious dessert recipe for you to try courtesy of the Fourmile House – packed full of calories I hasten to add but looks yum It is certainly not too early, in fact in some cases it will be too late, to book your favourite restaurant for a pre-Christmas meal out with friends and family. My weekends are already getting busy with parties and gatherings.
There is a wonderful group called Sensations which has been set up at Westhill which offers unique play facilities, well worth a read. There have been three lucky groups already benefitting from the cash available from Drum Group. It is mentioned in the Community Council Minutes and there is a small article about how you can apply to receive some funding.
If you would like to contribute to the next magazine then the deadline is 20 November for the Dec/Jan issue. Articles need to be relevant for reading mid-December thru to mid-February. So any events planned over the start of the year this is the magazine to be in. For those wishing to attract some Christmas customers then 20 November is your last magazine of 2014 and first magazine of 2015! Contact details are below.
In the meantime, why not re-fill your cuppa and enjoy the rest of the magazine.
Until the next time,
Sue x

Prime Four Trust – community assistance required. The Prime Four Trust is a source of funding that could really benefit Kingswells. However, people will need to respond in order to take advantage of the opportunities on offer. KCC would encourage residents or non-professional groups based in Kingswells to consider projects or facilities that would benefit the community. This could include groups that already operate out of the various community venues in Kingswells, residents’ associations, Neighbourhood Watch members, or just a group of residents who would like to make a difference in Kingswells.
Funding is currently limited to £5000 a year but it is hoped that tenant businesses in Prime Four will contribute to the trust and enable bigger projects to be considered. If we get some good suggestions for projects, then perhaps we could consider approaching the tenants directly to seek additional funding. One suggestion is for an additional community hall. This would relieve pressure on the existing halls. At this stage, of course, we cannot predict how much the funding stream will grow.
We need help and ideas from residents in order to take this forward and ensure that Kingswells takes full advantage of the funding on offer. KCC can’t do this alone – we need others to get involved, including volunteers to become project managers. If you already run local groups or organisations, then you’ll probably have ideas about how your work or facilities could be improved. Start-up ideas for new projects will also be considered. Don’t miss the boat!
If you have some ideas and want to be involved then please contact KCC by email at [email protected],
Call 01224 749743 (evenings), or drop a note in the letter box between the notice boards in front of the community centre. KCC has meetings in the community centre on the second Monday of each month at 8pm if you would like to discuss this or any other issues that affect the community.
Fast BroadbandIn August, members of KCC took part in an online conference held by Digital Scotland to discuss the roll-out of fibre optic broadband in Kingswells. We know that some parts of Kingswells have already been set up to receive faster broadband and KCC would welcome feedback on how much things have improved. The roll-out will continue. However, it is very frustrating that Digital Scotland cannot provide a clearer plan and more definite timescales. Those homes connected to the Westhill exchange via one of the green street cabinets are likely to be improved first. Cabinets 11 and 13 are already activated and cabinet 12 should follow soon. Other homes connected directly to the exchange (eg. homes off Kingswood Avenue) will have to wait for additional cabinets to be provided. There is currently no timescale provided for this. More isolated homes around Kingswells will probably need to wait for new technologies to be developed. You can see a useful video explaining the roll-out on http://www.kwells.org/broadband-webinar-2 Digital Scotland implied that some homes might not receive faster broadband until 2017, and a few might not receive it at all within the current programme.
You can check the status of your line by pasting the following link into your browser and entering your landline number:
https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html
If this shows your infrastructure has been upgraded, then you can contact your broadband service provider to request a package that gives faster speed.
KCC’s website at http://www.kwells.org provides an update on the roll-
out in Kingswells.
De Vere HotelAdverts have appeared in the press for the new hotel’s health and fitness centre which includes a swimming pool. Members of KCC are to meet with the hotel manager to find out what will be on offer to the
community.
Statoil buildingKCC has objected to the height of this new building within Prime Four. However, Aberdeen City Council is likely to approve it as their planners
say it is not out of keeping with other buildings already on the site.
West HuxterstoneBuilding work on the site at West Huxterstone (opposite the old school)
has been suspended until a question over land ownership is resolved.
Playing fieldAt the time of writing, drainage work is being completed on the playing field at Fairley Road.
Japanese KnotweedThe two areas identified by KCC have been dealt with by the Council. They will be monitored as the year goes on to make sure the treatment
was successful.
Lock block pavingSome of the lock block paving on Huxterstone Drive has broken up. The Council has removed the defective blocks and replaced them with tar, which looks unsightly. KCC does not consider this a suitable solution. Councillor David Cameron has been in touch with the Roads Department to try to find a better solution. Lock block paving is widespread in Kingswells. Please let KCC know if it is defective on your
street.
Community Council MembershipThe Community Council has five vacant places and would welcome an intake of new blood and fresh ideas. The group is open to anyone living in Kingswells who is interested in issues that affect our area. We have tried very hard over the last ten years to improve our local community and serve the needs of residents. We keep people informed about what is going on locally, consult them when big issues come up, and work with other agencies to help improve local services. We are keen to continue and extend our work into the future. Joining the group doesn’t have to take up too much of your free time. You don’t need any previous experience and you can decide how much time you want to spend on community council work. Anyone who is interested in joining or would like to find out more should visit our website at http://www.kwells.org

One of the best things I did since moving to Kingswells over 2 years ago, was to visit the Monday Morning meeting of the Coffee and Conversation Group at 10.30 am in the Community Centre. It was a bit daunting at first to walk in on a group of people you don’t know, but they were welcoming and friendly and we gradually got to know each other. I would then see friendly faces in the post office, at the Co-op and fish van or on the bus, and began to feel much more a part of the Community.
Some weeks we just chat, but cover a variety of interesting topics and share experiences and advice. About once a month we have a speaker. Steve Delaney, our local councillor comes and keeps us up to date with what is happening in the Council, particularly matters of relevance to us. He is also very good at listening to our concerns and making every effort to deal with them. We have had speakers on health matters, active ageing, various charities, Fair Trade, Stained Glass, and craft work, with demonstrations and try it your self. From the Active Aging Team we learnt about Health Walks, and now three of us have done the training and are able to lead the short walks around Kingswells, which some of us do every Thursday morning at 10.30. At each meeting we pay £1 and this goes into a kitty which helps fund a summer outing and Christmas Lunch. This summer we enjoyed a visit to Milton of Crathes for a short ride on the Deeside Railway, with coffee. We then went to Drum Garden Centre for our lunch. On this occasion we were lucky enough to hire the community bus from Westhill with a volunteer driver.
This Autumn we look forward to another visit from Steve, a talk from a podiatrist and Chis Croly the city archaeologist will talk about the history of Kingswells. Later we will have the Bucksburn singers and a Christmas lunch. If you have a little time to spare on a Monday morning please do come and join us. You will be made very welcome. You may have a special interest or hobby such as knitting or embroidery and be able to share it with us. Some of us are learning to do more with our I-pads!
So:Don’t be lonely, don’t be shy
Come along and give us a try!

BucksburnAcademy newsBusy Start to the New TermWe have had a great and busy start to the new school year. The pupils have been looking very smart in school uniform and have settled in quickly to the challenges of their classes. A particular welcome went out to our new S1 pupils. The first day nerves quickly disappeared as they were met by their S2 buddies who helped them find their new classes and made sure they had a smooth start to secondary school. We were also delighted with the SQA exam results that our pupils achieve . They all received the grades their hard work deserved and we were particularly proud of the achievements of our S4 pupils who did really well in the first year of the new National Qualifications.
Student Senior Leader Team 2014-15At the end of last term some of our senior students undertook a rigorous application process to apply to be part of our senior student leadership team. After a challenging interview process where the pupils outlined the difference they would make we were delighted to appoint Teri Shand as our student leader for the new session who will be ably assisted by her deputies – Rachel Adam, Rachel Brechin and Zimmy Azubike.
Bucksburn Academy at the Bucksburn & Newhills Gala DayThe school was delighted to take part in the successful Bucksburn & Newhills Gala day on the 30th August. The Bucksburn Academy Steel Pans brought some sunshine to the showery morning while senior pupils took members of the community on a tour of the school.
We Are GoldenHave you seen the Bucksburn Academy We Are Golden video yet? This was a project led by last years Senior Student Leadership Team to showcase the school and our pupils. It involved organising a days filming in the school, setting it to music and editing all the footage. It was premiered at the school Awards Ceremonies at the end of last session and you can view it at :

News from Councillor Delaney
This summer’s hot topic was of course superfast broadband and I must admit to having become somewhat immersed in the whole saga. Unfortunately the rollout is likely to take a bit longer than many of us had hoped. Many households are now receiving the faster service, though others are still struggling to get 1Mbps connections.
I’ve mentioned this elsewhere but I’ll mention it again for anyone who missed it. There was an online information session dedicated to superfast broadband in Kingswells which included a helpful question and answer session and this can be accessed at http://www.kwells.org/broadband-webinar-2. Anyone wishing to be kept updated on superfast broadband rollout should sign up at http://www.digitalscotland.org.uk. I appreciate those who have already signed up have had no information to date but assurances were given that this will change from October, so it’s well worth signing up.
As I write this column we are just a matter of days away from hearing the result of the Scottish Independence Referendum. Regardless of which way you cast your vote I’m sure you would agree that it has been a difficult time for everyone. Genuinely and honestly held beliefs have left friends, neighbours and even family members on opposite sides of the divide. There should be no triumphalism from whichever side wins, just a willingness to accept the result as a democratic nation and to work together towards rebuilding the kind of society we all aspire to.
Whatever the outcome a large proportion of society will feel hurt, aggrieved and disenfranchised by those who took an opposing view. Neither of the two options offered were representing the status quo so things are going to change significantly. We are all Scots (regardless of our birth nationality, in the sense we have all chosen to live in Scotland) and we must all work together to build the new Scotland, in whatever shape or form that may take.
Looking towards more local issues the first Planning Application for the Countesswells development (which sits between the roundabout at the end of the Lang Stracht and the Kingswells roundabout) has been referred to the full Council on 8th October. It is also widely expected that the Marischal Square proposals may also be referred to that meeting. Also coming to that meeting is the future of the
former Summerhill Academy site. Although this is outwith Kingswells there was much interest from local residents when Morrisons had intended building a supermarket there. A number of possible uses for the site are under consideration and these will be brought before councillors at that meeting.
If you have a burning desire to see local democracy in action, the 8th October meeting will be broadcast live from 10.30am on the Council’s web site. Although webcasts have been running in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Moray and Highland, this will be the first time Council meetings will have been filmed broadcast from Aberdeen, so it clearly represents a step forward in making the workings of the Council more accessible to local residents. Council meetings are not renowned for their brevity, but if it’s of interest to you, so be it!
On a lighter note I took part in the ice bucket challenge recently. Although it sounds a bit daft getting a bucket of freezing cold water poured over you, it’s a great way to raise money for charity. I donated to Victim Support Scotland, an organisation which offers practical and emotional support to victims of crime. They are also a campaigning organisation who were instrumental in the formation of the European Directive on Victims & Witnesses and the recent Victims & Witnesses Act in Scotland. This is an organisation I’ve been involved with for many years. My wife decided to support CLAN and my daughter donated to Macmillan, so it’s really down to each individual to support a charity of their own choosing.
If you’d like to have a laugh at my expense take a look at
http://www.facebook.com/CllrDelaney. By all means enjoy, but please do consider making a small donation to the charity of your choice. This silly craze has raised several million pounds for a range of UK charities this summer, so please help them to continue to make a difference.
Of course watching the video clip won’t be an option for you unless you have broadband running at or above 1Mbps, which takes me back to where I started this column!
Regards
Steve Delaney

The story of the Brookes familySir Harry Brooke a Justice of the Peace married Patricia Eyres. They were a well-liked couple and resided at Fairly House in the hamlet of Kingswells. The couple went on to have 5 children, 4 boys and a girl.
Sir Harry Brooke was in the 92nd Gordon Highlander Battalion and was knighted by the order of The British Empire. It is in the Gordon Highlander Battalion where he earned the title of Captain.
In 1910 another local gentleman and landowner Mr Ferris got together with Captain Brookes and built the Kingswells Public Hall. This is situated in Old Skene Road Kingswells. (Across the road from the local church). The hall provided a much needed meeting place for all residents of the Kingswells and surround-ing area. The hall saw many farmers markets, dances and WRI meetings over the years. Captain Brookes orchestrated the building of the hall and used the folks from the poor house – which is now Wood End Hospital to help build the hall. In return the folks from the poor house were fed, and learned new skills.
The hall now over 100 years later is a busy place where many lo-cal activities exist. Zoomba, Jazzerzize, boxing and dog training to name but a few - a far cry from the dances and coffee morn-ings of years gone by.
This leads on to our local hero, Son of Captain Harry Brooke - Captain James Anson Brooke VC. He served in the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders and died in battle on the 29th of October 1914 at 30 years of age.
Captain James Brooke was killed during the first battle of Ypres as Lieutenant Brooke. On the 29th of October 1914 near Ghelu-velt, Belgium, Lieutenant Brooke led two attacks on the German trenches under heavy rifle and machine gun fire, regaining a lost trench at a very critical moment. By his marked coolness and promptitude on this occasion, Lieutenant Brooke prevented the enemy from breaking through the British line at a time when a general counter- attack could not have been organised. Having regained the lost trench, he went back to bring up supports, and while doing so, was killed. Lieutenant Brooke was posthumously promoted to Captain. He is interred at Zantvoorde British Cemetery in Belgium. There is a memorial to him at Springbank Cemetery Aberdeen.
During the 1st world war Captain Harry Brooke lost 3 sons to the Great War, each of them are named on the war memorial which is now based outside the Kingswells Parish Church. It must have been an awful time for him and other families to have lost so
many loved ones from a primarily agricultural area where neigh-bours were at least a mile or more apart. There was maybe some solace in the building of Kingswells Public hall in those early post WW1 years where families would be able to meet and grieve together, share stories, and eventually laugh again.
In tribute to our local Hero Captain James Anson Brooke and his family there is a memorial stone to be laid in the grounds of the Kingswells Public Hall. We are currently building a small memo-rial garden at the front of the hall to house the stone. There will be a ceremony on the 25th of October 2014 at 1pm where we will involve the local people and the Gordon Highlanders with some entertainment and afternoon tea. We hope to raise some funds for the ABF who do a wonderful job in supporting our war veterans who have served all over the world in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, and The Falkland’s. As long as war exists we will unfortunately always have war veterans who need our endless support.
Tickets are £10 each contact Pamela by text or telephone. 07870731597. Or call Catherine direct - number on picture.
Captain Brooke VC
There will be a stone laid to commemorate Captain Brooke VC who died on the 29th October 1914
afterwards a concert will be held in the Kingswells Village Hall, refreshments will be served.
Ticket price £10 (funds will be donated to the ABF The soldiers charity, the Army's National Charity)
Date 25th of October 2014 at 1.00pm Kingswells Village Hall,

Kingswells Community Project Team would like to sincerely thank Aberdeen City Council’s historian, Chris Croly, for coming to Kingswells on Thursday 11th September to officially launch the “Kingswells & Brimmond Hill” booklet by giving a fascinating talk on the history of Kingswells. Chris and his colleagues at Aberdeen City Council wrote and illustrated this interesting booklet, while funds raised from local adverts (which had appeared in the previous “Kingswells Community News”) paid for the printing of 10 000 booklets and helped with distribution throughout the city. Our thanks go to local businesses and the previous editorial team. The booklets are available, free, from the foyer of Kingswells Community Centre or to download http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/web/files/LocalHistory/kingswells_brimmond_hill_history_leaflet.pdf (photos Aberdeen City Council)

After such a good summer, autumn and winter comes round, which means darker nights and autumnal weather.
The importance of securing your home, garage and car as part of good housekeeping measures cannot be over empha-sised to prevent opportunist crime occurring. I ask for your continued support and urge all residents to remain vigilant, secure your property and resist the temptation on leaving an unattended car running, in order for it to thaw from the snow. This will not only cause your insurance to be declared void but is an offence also.
At this time of year we have Halloween and November 5th, these are family times of celebration and I urge you to bear others in mind if you are trick or treating or letting off fire-works. Safety of course should always be a consideration but also bear in mind that your neighbours may not celebrate these events.
As always keep yourself and yours’ safe and if you see any-thing suspicious or something that is not quite right, please let us know on 101 or via crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If we don’t know, we can’t help.
Best wishes

Funding boost for Kingswells community groups Three Kingswells community groups have received funding from the newly established Prime Four Community Trust. Kingswells Parent Teacher Association has been awarded £581 to install a netball post in Kingswells Primary School playground which will encourage children and families to get outdoors and enjoy some physical activity. Other beneficiaries in this round are Kingswells Amateur Boxing Club which received £836 towards new equipment and Kingswells Community Council which received £966 towards hanging baskets for the village centre. Prime Four Community Trust has been established to benefit local charitable groups operating in the Kingswells' Community Council Area. Funding for the Trust is provided through Prime Four developer, Drum Property Group and administered by Foundation Scotland. Decisions on awards are made via the Prime Four Community Trust Panel. Fife Hyland, Communications Director at Drum Property Group said, "We are delighted that the Trust has started to direct funds helping a wide variety of groups and causes in Kingswells, and would encourage others to come forward with applications." Grants of £250 up to £5,000 are available in the next round of funding which will open later this year. Charitable groups and organisations operating in the Kingswells Community Council area can apply in writing to the Secretariat of the Prime Four Community Trust Panel. The organisation must submit a copy of their governing documents and latest set of annual accounts alongside their application. At eight years old, Joe might not be able to say “yes” yet, but he can show us. He looks straight into SensationALL staff member’s eyes, lies back & puts his hands behind his head. This is his way to request another turn in the spinning dish during a SensationALL Family Stay & Play session. Joe can’t cope with
mainstream soft play centres or many childrens’ groups, but he loves coming with his parents & sister to play at SensationALL. Sometimes this involves climbing about the small play area and ball pool, relaxing in the sensory room or he might be attending one of our subsidized music groups. Mum Rebecca, who has also attended a number of SensationaLL’s training workshops says “It’s lovely to come somewhere all together as a family, where staff totally understand our needs. Joe’s sister gets to meet other kids, who also understand how tricky life can be as a sibling of a child with multiple support needs”.
Debbie, an adult with significant learning difficulties regularly travels from Aberdeen to SensationALL for a session where she uses the sensory room along with her carer. She also attends an adult group that runs on a Monday, but loves her time and ability to control the soft lights, vibrating mat, music and many textures in the sensory room. Debbie has also volunteered and helped with making refreshments during some groups. She plans to join the SensationALL Singers (inclusive choir) and will be helping out
at our forthcoming fundraisers, where she also hopes to get pampered by one of our visiting practitioners. She has never learned to ride a bike but hopes that one day when SensationALL have purchased a
few specialized trikes and tandem bikes, that she can access their planned bike club.

1. Dungeness, Kent - Named after French naturalist Jean Victoire Audouin, Audouin’s gull is one of the rarest seabirds in the world. They are usually found around the warm coasts of the Mediterranean, but in 2003 a sole bird was sighted at Dungeness in Kent.
2. Fair Isle, Shetland Islands - Due to its isolated location, Fair Isle – roughly halfway between Shetland and Orkney – is a notoriously fruitful site for spotting vagrant birds. Over the years Britain’s first examples of an American kestrel, a Siberian ruby-throat and a Tennessee warbler, all many miles from their native habitats, have been spotted there.
3. The Farne Islands, Northumberland - The only Aleutian tern ever recorded in Europe was spotted on the Farne Islands in 1979. The species takes its name from the Aleutian Islands in western Alaska, and ordinarily the birds would never be encountered outside of the Pacific Ocean.
4. Lewis, Western Isles - In 2004, a purple martin – the largest species of swallow native to North America – was recorded at the Butt of Lewis, the northernmost tip of the Outer Hebrides. Native to the eastern and central United States, the martin usually winters in the Amazon basin.
5. Tiree, Argyll & Bute - Ordinarily the Ascension frigatebird is only found on Boatswainbird, a tiny islet off the coast of Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, which is itself around 1,000 miles from the coast of east Africa. In 1953, however, a young frigatebird was found on Tiree in the Inner Hebrides, and it remains the only recorded sighting of this species in Europe.

FIREWORKS STRESS FOR PETSAs the dark nights draw in over the next few weeks, it’s a good time to start thinking about being prepared for Bonfire Night.
This is a time of year that our pets find particularly stressful and unfortunately, fireworks no longer seem to be restricted to the 5th November.
There are several things that you can do to make the experience less traumatic for your cat or dog.
Young puppies retain memories of stressful experiences. With this in mind it is a good idea to get your puppy used to lots of differ-ent experiences around the age of 8-12 weeks. This should be done in a controlled way so that he isn’t scared, but should include being exposed to lots of different noises. Speak to your vet or puppy trainer for further advice. For older dogs, CDs are available which can be played at increasing volume to con-dition your dog to different sounds.
If your dog or cat is scared of fire-work noise, it makes sense to avoid walking your dog after dark and obviously keep your cat in at night time.
Make sure that both cats and dogs have somewhere they can go in the house where they feel secure, either a quieter room or a cupboard or other smaller space. If your pet is becoming very anxious then it is important not to make a fuss of them or overly reassure them, as often this just serves to reinforce their anxiety.
There are calming supplements available from your vet which can be used around the time of Bonfire Night, or if your pet’s anxiety is very extreme, we can prescribe drugs for them. If this is the case we will need to check over your pet first, so it is best to plan ahead and make an appointment well before the first bang!
