2012 will be a momentous year for our Business Unit Web-fed and indeed BoBSt group. As of April 2012, the activities of the three Business Units, Sheet-fed, Web-fed and Services will appear united under the BoBSt brand. this marks the culmination of a synergetic development that has taken place over many decades sharing one common objective: making each group company’s know-how and best solutions available in order to jointly develop new technologies or continuously improve on existing technical advances.

For the majority of the company brands that make up the know-how of BoBSt, it has been an illustrious history that in same cases has stood the passing of the centuries, having started as early as late 1800.

Already a world leader in the provision of equipment and services to the folding carton and corrugated industries, BoBSt group first entered the flexible packag-ing market in 1987 when it acquired a shareholding in the Italian manufacturing company Schiavi, which was later integrated into the group. Schiavi’s rotogravure presses and coating & laminating product lines were subsequently integrated in to Rotomec – one of the Valmet Converting companies. BoBSt group acquired the Valmet Converting companies from Metso Corporation in 2004 and as well as Rotomec, also acquired general Vacuum Equipment located in the UK. With the acquisition in 2008 of Fischer & Krecke, BoBSt’s centre of flexo printing excellence moved to Bielefeld, in germany.

The BOBST logo has been carefully modernized: it is a natural evolutionof the well known Bobst logotype and the globally introduced Group symbol, the red square.

At the dawn of its 25th year of entering the flexible packaging world, BoBSt can look back with enormous satisfaction at having succeeded in developing and maintaining an excel-lent reputation in the flexible material industry. this has been achieved through the acquisitions of some of the brands that have shaped the history of the flexible packaging business, and the subsequent ability to capitalize on the resultant opportunities for growth. this meant setting up the kind of structures and environments which would encourage the right synergies by drawing human and technical resources and know-how together, making the manufacturing system more efficient, strengthening the R&D and service sector and streamlining the product ranges. now the time has come to capitalize on these accomplish-ments and merge all products and competencies together under a strengthened BoBSt brand.

As of April 2012, all products manufactured by the group companies will be marketed under the BoBSt name, with former company brands remaining present in product names. the unification of the brand structure helps to clearly com-municate the product portfolio to all our customers. It also al-lows BoBSt to rationalize its marketing and communication approach by delivering a single message to the market.

BoBSt’s customers will benefit from the consolidation of an unbeatable synergy in technology and innovation and a further impetus to create solutions which are efficiently manufactured, highly productive, easy to operate and of course profitable for the users.

BoBSt global sales and service organization will also benefit from the consolidation by rising to the challenge of continu-ously improving on customer communication and services, by delivering solutions that cover the entire printing and converting process and its optimization. this will be instru-mental in helping customers maximise their production by providing timely and responsive assistance when needed and by continuously expanding the services and equipment dedi-cated to maintaining installed machines to the leading-edge of performance and productivity.

drupa 2012 is the event where it all comes together, under the banner of the revitalized BoBSt logo, which for all of us represents a symbol of belonging to a united group that cre-ates and provides high technology the world over.

I look forward to having the opportunity to meet you during one of the exciting events scheduled in the course of this year.

HoW Do YoU ASSESS tHE SIgnIFI-CAnCE oF FLEXo on tHE InDIAn PACKAgIng MARKEt?

Although the Indian market is primar-ily rotogravure, flexo for wide web applications is picking up fast, as printers are realizing its advantages including great flexibility with ap-

plications and run lengths. In particular, in segments such as baby care, feminine care, food, edible oil, flour, biscuits and confectionery. With the number of CI flexo presses increasing in India, the related infrastructure, i.e. prepress, printing plates, quality aniloxes & sleeves, inks will be more easily available, as well as more skilled manpower capable of handling the equipment. As a process option, flexo is definitely very suitable for a wide range of flexible materials applications, particularly for PE film printing.

WHY DID YoU SELECt BoBSt AS A SUPPLIER?

two major reasons: BoBSt’s technological leadership and special competence for flexo equipment and BoBSt ‘s service capacities. In addition, since we cover all demands of the flexible packaging industry, it makes sense for us to purchase the equipment we need from a reliable global source. Last but not least, it is a pivot of our philosophy that market leaders like us should partner only with leaders in equipment manufacturing.

WHY WAS YoUR DECISIon In FAVoUR oF tHE F&K 20SIX?

We evaluated presses from other suppliers, and came to the conclusion that the 20SIX being the evolution of the FP 16-S, which had been the benchmark of gearless flexo presses worldwide for more than a decade, would ensure the highest return on investment. We were very impressed by the enhanced efficiencies across almost all machine systems.

WHAt Do YoU ConSIDER AS tHE MoSt oUtStAnDIng tECH-nICAL FEAtURES oF tHE F&K 20SIX?

the F&K 20SIX is the most compact of all machines we evalu-ated, the one requiring the least floor space and web length from unwinder to rewinder. We were also impressed by the extremely rigid design of the whole CI section which allows for the highest printing speeds even with the most demand-ing jobs, and the user-friendly handling and maintenance concepts of the press.

WHAt ARE YoUR EXPECtAtIonS WItH YoUR nEW 20SIX PRESS?

We expect to significantly increase the productivity of our printing operations by minimizing waste, reducing the con-sumption of inks and solvents, and reducing change-over times whilst further improving the quality we deliver.

on the occasion of their investment in flexo printing equipment in the shape of a BoBSt F&K 20SIX flexo press, Mr. Amit Ray, Uflex CEo and President of the Converting Division speaks to Web-fed news.

BoBSt Bielefeld gmbH, announces the 100th order for its unique smartgPS™, graphic positioning system. the 100th system is integrated into a new F&K 20SIX CI flexo press which goes to Societé tilwel, France.

A retrofitable option on F&K gearless presses, smartgPS™ became available to customers in January 2009. In october 2009 it was recognized with the Flexotech Innovation award, anoth-er prestigious award – the FtA technical Achievement Award – followed In 2010. the 100 order milestone includes both retrofits and options as sold on new F&K presses worldwide.

More than an incremental improvement of existing processes, smartgPS™ is an entirely new, revolutionary approach to registration, impression setting and startup. Unlike conventional systems which perform set-up in the press through a manual or automatic optical process of trial and error, smartgPS™ does the job offline at the plate mount-ing stage.

the technology is easily understood and implemented. It eliminates more than 90% of wasted material during job changeovers and nearly all wasted labor. the savings derived from elimi-nating wasted time and material can increase profits on all jobs and give printers a decisive advantage in their ability to accept and run short jobs profitably.

FlEXO PRiNtiNg

100tH oRDER FoR smartgPStM

With smartgPS™ the shorter the print runs and the more change-overs, the greater the cost savings. And, the more expensive the substrate, the greater the cost savings achieved by reduction of waste. these compelling advantages make smartgPS™ an exceptionally at-tractive investment.

Andreas Kückelmann, BoBSt Biele-feld managing director, said: “We are pleased to take note of the 100th smartgPS™ order milestone. Many of these are repeat orders and the number underscores the value this innovation offers flexo printers. We are proud that our technology is helping so many of our customers thrive in today’s market.”

It comes as no surprise that the opening web page of the Italian converting com-pany CIESD shows a globe enclosed in a double twist chocolate wrapping. After all it is one of their core specialties since CIESD was the first Italian converter to develop twistable PVC film suitable for direct food contact.

When it was established in Pregnana Milanese, near Milan, in 1964, CIESD’s focus was on bubble extrusion of twistable PVC and shrinkable PVC films. nowadays, they also print and convert those films into sophisticated products for a wide range of flexible materials applications. their modern production facilities support other processes including gravure printing, lamination, metallizing/demetallizing, and slitting.

Production serves primarily the confectionery, bakery, dairy, and rice/cereals segments of the food market. their shrinkable PVCs films are used for techni-cal overwraps, while semi-rigid PVCs films are used for credit card lamination. A significant percentage of the output is exported to countries in Europe, north and South America, Africa and Asia.

the high performance films developed for food packaging are printed in rotogra-vure. A 9-colour BoBSt Rotomec RS 4003MP gravure printing machine has been in production at CIESD since fall 2010.

the rotogravure machine has now been in production for well over a year. “the accuracy of the register control system even at high speed is superb. this is a must in our markets. We have installed the tAPS system as well, and in addition to providing top quality to our customers we can reap the benefits of working with minimum levels of waste. Job changeovers are very functional and fast, so we can run efficiently a mix of different run lengths. And the list of efficiencies could go on and on.” explains Mr Petrillo.

“We needed a new rotogravure machine to add capacity to cater for expanding demand on one hand; on the other, our clients demanded new packag-ing solutions and we wanted to be equipped in the best possible way. We target quality in every-thing we do. We wanted the best equipment, hence we went for a BOBST Rotomec gravure press.”

“We have developed a relation based on trust and empathy which is truly special. The same highest level of customer atten-tion we give our own clients, we got from BOBST. Most impor-tantly, this is as true today as it was at the start of the project”.

Mr Francesco Petrillo, CIESD’s founder and managing director.

When targeting superior quality output and productivity there is no competing with BoBSt LEMAnIC® production lines. the very high quality standards re-quired by the Chinese cigarette industry as well as structural reforms by the Chinese tobacco Board have paved the way for the excellent sales performance of BoBSt LEMAnIC® lines. Record sales were made in 2011 and 2012 got off to a flying start.

Yunnan Qiaotong Package Printing Company Ltd, has been a BoBSt cus-tomer for almost 20 years. their latest investment in printing technology is an 8-colour LEMAnIC® DELtA gravure press with inline sheeter which will join the three other LEMAnIC® printing & converting lines installed in the compa-ny’s Qiaotong production site. through this latest investment in leading-edge technology and the additional produc-tion capacity, Qiaotong will become one of the three top cigarette packaging printers in the Yunnan province.

Bengbu Jinhuangshan Rotogravure Printing Co. Ltd. is a member of the Bril-liant Circle group, a group of companies engaged in design and production of high-end cigarette packaging. the com-pany has just signed for a 10-colour LEMAnIC® DELtA gravure printing press with inline rewinder.

gRavuRE PRiNtiNg

BoBSt LEMAnIC® LInES SEt BEnCHMARK

this will be Bengbu’s 3rd BoBSt gra-vure press following a Rotomec line installed in 1998 and a LEMAnIC® RIVIERA press installed in 2008. the new DELtA will enable the company to meet the increasing demand for gravure quality printed jobs transferred from sheet-fed offset due to the merg-ing of Chinese cigarette brands.

An 8-colour DELtA gravure press with inline sheeter has also been the choice of Kunming Richfun Printing Co. Ltd, a first time buyer of BoBSt LEMAnIC® equipment. With their new investment, Kunming Richfun plans to increase

their production capacity and col-lect new gravure printed orders from tobacco companies in addition to the jobs already processed in offset.

With this excellent start in 2012 we were able to satisfy the increasing de-mand for high quality cigarette packag-ing in the Chinese market.

“We truly appreciate the technology of the flexo trolley, because it enables a consistently repeatable process that enhances quality,” explained Mr Fantini and continued “the system gives superior optical quality to the laminated struc-ture, and it also makes it possible to coat lower quantities of adhesive directly on the aluminium foil at high speed”,.

the efficiency of the machine is also reflected in the perfor-mance of the dryer.“the ventilation system is very efficient. It enables to dry at high speed the extensive range of flexible packaging struc-tures it produces; the benefit of which is increased productiv-ity.” Concluded Mr.Fantini.

SIt ItALIA’s production facility also houses three BoBSt Rotomec gravure presses, two with in-line lamination. the latest one, which entered production at the end of 2011, is a RS 4003MPHS press with production speed up to 500 m/min.

this production plant was set up in Pesaro, a city on the Adri-atic Sea, in 1996. Since 2006 it has been part of the SIt group which is headquartered in the Republic of San Marino, where the production plant of SIt S.p.A. is located. the group also comprises SAREL PLASt, a converting company near Padua, in north-east Italy.
