Web Annotation
A long time ago...
Tim Berners-Lee http://www.w3.org/History/1989/proposal.html
One must also be able to annotate links, as well as nodes, ...”
“
Over 20 years later, work is being done to add this
feature back into the web.
What is/are web annotation(s)?
Traditional annotations are marginalia, errata, and highlights in printed books, maps, picture, and other physical media.
Web annotations are an attempt to recreate and extend that functionality as a new layer of interactivity and linking on top of the Web.
It will allow anyone to annotate anything anywhere, be it a web page, epub, PDF, image, video, audio stream, or data in raw or visualized form.
Web annotations can be: ● Linked● Shared between services● Tracked back to their origins● Searched and discovered● Stored wherever the author wishes.
The vision is for a decentralized and open annotation infrastructure.
Why web annotation is cool in one sentence: When visiting a web page, you will not be limited to see what the publisher of that page wants you to see, but can also explore what others would like to show you in that context.
