Clearwater is the new home of a
rugby team.Monday, the Clearwater CityCouncil Monday agreed to moveahead with developing a lease for theSt. Cloud Rugby Club to use the fieldat Eldorado Park as its home field.
“We’re hoping to use the fieldyou have out there,” said JonPaul Du-four, president of the St. Cloud Bot-tom Feeders rugby team. “We’d liketo make it our home.”
The club has two “legs”, the sen-ior men’s team and a high schoolteam made up of players from areaschools, including Becker, Annandaleand St. Cloud. The senior team has itsgames Saturday and holds practicesTuesdays and Thursdays. The highschool team would use the field onfour Fridays in the spring.
“We’ve used the field for about ayear now. It’s a beautiful facility andwe like coming here,” said DanFranklin, who serves on the board of directors for the non-profit that over-sees the men’s team and the highschool team that will be using the fa-cility.
“We’d like to formalize a agree-ment and make it our home movingforward,” he said.
Members of the council werepleased.
“I think it’s great news,” saidCouncilman Rollie Lange. “We’vebeen trying to attract people from in-side and outside the community.
You’re our first sports team. We’remaking progress.”
Franklin says it is a benefit forthe city as well.
“We have a few teams in theleague from Iowa,” he said. “Lastyear they stayed at the hotel in townand were spending money in town.”
Councilman Chris Ritzer askedwhether there would be a conflict if someone else was already using thefield when the rugby team had a gamescheduled.
“It’s a public park,” he said.“Most times in St. Cloud, people
have been pretty nice about it,” said
Dufour.He said they only use the field afew times during the spring and fall.He said practice can be done withouttaking up the entire field.
Administrator Kevin Kress saidonce there was an official agreement,the city could post a notice on thewall of the pavilion at the park statingthe field was reserved.
Mayor Pete Edmonson said thereare plans to develop the park, whichmeans there may be modifications tothe playing area. But he said he didn’tthink there would be an issue.
Ritzer said the plans show thecurrent field would remain as green
space.“I know there are plans for out
there and we’d like to be a part of thatplan,” said Franklin, “so rugby can
grow and be a part of the communitylong-term.”
Edmonson asked if the team waslooking for more amenities, likebleachers or a scoreboard.
Franklin said they hadn’t consid-ered it at this point.
“It’s all open for discussion,” hesaid. “It would be phenomenal if weget that at some point but it’s not nec-essary.”
Under the proposed agreement,the team would pay the city $1,000per year and be responsible for cov-ering the cost of a portable toilet.
The city would maintain the
field.Kress said he would have a draftof a lease for the next council meet-ing.
Other BusinessIn other action the council:• Approved a tax exempt gam-
bling permit for St. Luke’s Church tohold a raffle at its Fall Festival Aug.21;
• Passed a resolution hiring MikeFlynn and Jack Helget to performtemporary seasonal lawn mainte-nance;
• Approved cancelling the April18 regular city council meeting.
