5th Grade Outdoor Education

Last month, 5th graders camped for 3 nights at Rancho Alegre in Santa Barbara County, next to Lake Cachuma. Our school attended camp the same week as Sunset Elementary and Ballard Elementary, so students from those schools were mixed-in with ours. Students were divided into cabins of roughly 10 kids and assigned cabin leaders who were Juanamaria parent chaperone volunteers. Each cabin was challenged with team building through the creation of a cabin cheer and songs. Separate hiking groups were created for the day’s activities and consisted of kids mixed up from each of the cabins. Hiking groups were led by a naturalist and each day students were led on an educational hike on one of the following topics: plants, geology, animals and a night hike. At meal time, students were broken into new groups once again and assigned the same table to eat at for all meals. Meal time was a chance to learn about ORT, which is edible food waste and the importance of minimizing it. Students had an opportunity to work together at mealtime for clean-up and sorting ORT

versus food scraps for compost. Throughout the course of the week each cabin was also assigned a meal to help set-up and clean-up. Cabin inspections throughout the week were a chance for students to earn points and earn a chance to be first at selecting leisure activities for each day which included options such as: archery, a hike to Lake Cachuma, a dip in Alegre Creek and structured games. Students were also given a chance to experience campfire activities, ball games, time in the reptile room and mellow resting time. Students came home full of memories and exciting stories to share. Be sure to ask 5th grade friends about the glow-stick “stars,”

In the Spotlight:

Kate Wilson: School Nurse

continued on next page

This is my first year as the school nurse at Juanamaria. I am usually on campus on Tuesday's but that can vary with my schedule. I also cover Foothill High School, EP Foster and the Early Intervention Center. This is only my second year as a school nurse. Before that I worked for four years as a nursing supervisor at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and prior to that I worked at the same facility in the ICU. In the hospital I worked primarily with adults. It is refreshing to work with children that are for the most part healthy. I love working in the school setting because it works well with the part of nursing I really enjoy which is teaching and prevention. I have been married for 33 years and have four grown children. I am the third oldest of twelve children and I grew up in midtown Ventura. I currently live in east Ventura and am an avid reader and enjoy spending time with my family.

In the Spotlight:

J'daire Davis: Health Tech

Most people think I am the nurse but that is not so! We have a wonderful nurse one day per week and she's the one with all the important knowledge! I work M-F, four hours per day. I give bandaids, tooth boxes, clean wounds, care for those who are sick/injured, make phone calls, give meds, paperwork and help the nurse with miscellaneous tasks. I graduated from Buena and attended Ventura College. I am married with three grown boys, whom I adore with all my heart, and have an adorable 2 year old chocolate lab named Kodiak. Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your child's' life and to love on them and care for them while they are here. Juanamaria is a great school and I'm happy to be a part of it!

Kindergarten Farm

On May 18, the Dolphins took over Underwood Farm. The kindergarten children were given the opportunity to take a hay ride behind a tractor, pick a basket of red, ripe strawberries, feed some farm animals, learn about fruits and vegetables, and climb over, under, and through the farm!

Staff Appreciation Week

We treasure our Juanamaria staff! Students showed appreciation for staff by bringing a different treasure to share each day. Parents showed appreciation by decorating the staff lounge and each staff member’s door, providing yummy snacks, sweets and Italian sodas, and ending the week with a staff luncheon.

Garden Update

The Science Garden has new colored mulch to designate the path. Check it out, go for a stroll. Thank you to Juanamaria PTA for providing the funds for this extra addition.

A VUSD crew worked on clearing the Reading Garden space, located behind the library. Volunteers were requested to aMulch Madness work event to help prepare the ground for planting.

Mother's Day Celebration

Each Kindergarten classroom has a special event that lasts about 90 minutes to celebrate Mother’s Day. The students sing and/ or perform and then each teacher has a variety of activities for the family members to share with their child. These include photo booths, reading, tea and snacks as well as other creative centers.

Tween Night

5th graders were invited to an event hosted by VUSD counseling staff and led by Denielle Morrison, Juanamaria’s counselor. The event aimed to help empower students and parents with conversation skills to assist with the transition into middle school. The evening involved several activities which provided opportunities to learn and practice the following strategies: using open-ended questioning, active listening skills and using “I” messages. Those in attendance left feeling better connected and empowered with take-home strategies to incorporate into daily life which will help avoid discord and foster understanding.

Teacher of the Month

The Ventura Chamber of Commerce’s Teacher of the Month (TOTM) program awards one teacher each month for his/her outstanding performance in teaching and their contribution to the students at their school and within our community. Nominations are submitted by the principals and PTA groups at each of the Ventura Unified School District schools. Juanamaria School has incredible teachers who give their heart and soul to our students. This month, Judy Johnston and Pete Sarak were chosen as Teachers of the Month. Both were presented with certificates and gifts and their names have been added to the 2016-17 plaque which will hang in the district office.Congratulations and thank you to our generous business community for supporting local educators. We appreciate you too!
