5th Grade Celebrates Pi Day

On March 14th, Mr. Sarak’s 5th graders celebrated Pi “π” Day with many fun activities. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Students began the morning by reciting as many digits of Pi that they could; one student was able to recite 90 digits after the decimal point. Students also had to find the Area, Circumference, Radius, and the Diameter of a pie plate. Next, they had to figure out, in groups, the answers to a Pi Day worksheet. Lastly, they all got to eat a slice of pie. It was a fun Pi Day celebration.

2nd Grade Leprechaun Traps

: Imagination and creativity soar again in our celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and those wee little leprechauns. Students put on their engineer hats and create and share a leprechaun trap in the hopes of catching a leprechaun and his gold. It’s magical and exciting for all of us.

Music Van

The New West Symphony Music Van visited 5th grade students of Juanamaria in March. This was an opportunity for students to see the different musical instrument choices available to them next year in middle school. Students enjoyed learning about instrumental families and had an opportunity to handle instruments and even attempt to play. Parent volunteers helped make the day a success, by lending a helping hand with assisting children in handling the instruments and sanitizing them between turns. The experience included a presentation detailing the benefits of musicianship. This experience was made possible by Juanamaria PTA and Ventura Kiwanis.

Noon Aides

Grace Lee

My name is Grace Lee. I have a wonderful husband Ray and 2 beautiful girls, who are currently in 4th and 1st grade at Juanamaria. This is my first year working as noon aide. The duties of noon aide are to make sure all the students are safe at the playground. And we also assist students when they need help, like help them to open their lunches, etc.

Erika Fierros

As a noon aid part of my job is to ensure the safety of the students and to create a friendly environment that kids are eager to come to every day. I have been a noon aid at Juanamaria for almost 7 years and have two daughters who are former Dolphins.

Jill Powell

Go Dolphins!! I'm excited and proud to be part of such a great group of kids & teachers once again, as I used to work here as a noon supervisor in 1999 through 2005! My son Steven & my daughter Sarah went to this school from kindergarten through fifth grade! I've been working at the Ventura County Fairgrounds for the last ten years, but wanted to come back to Juanamaria as I missed seeing the students grow up and move on to middle school! So with Dolphin pride I'm happy to be back as a noon supervisor to be with such wonderful kids and teachers! Thank you!

Willow McConnell

Hi! My name is Willow McConnell. I have been a noon aide here at Juanamaria for three years. My daughter Kyra is in 3rd grade. What I like about my job is that it allows me more time at the school to contribute, to make sure all our kids are safe, sharing fun conversations with them and watching them grow into sweet little people. I truly appreciate the opportunity to be here to watch my daughter and all the kids thrive here at Juanamaria. Our community here at Juanamaria is so awesome and I am very proud to be a part of that!

Balboa Middle School Orientation

5th graders participated in an orientation day at Balboa Middle School. The Associated Student Body (ASB) created a human hallway to cheer and applaud students as they were welcomed onto the campus. The orientation began in the multipurpose room, where students received a message from Principal Wade about the importance of establishing connections and being an active part of the Balboa community. The assistant principals acted out a skit to introduce a few club and sports options, followed by a slideshow which included pictures of sport coaches, club advisors and 6th grade teaching staff. Students were then divided into groups and rotated to the following places on campus: library (for a scavenger hunt), ASB room (officers’ introduction), Counselor’s Room (intro to Middle School PowerPoint with video) and Gym (intro to band instruments). After the rotations, students gathered in the gym for a pep rally and then broke into groups of 10 for campus tours led by ASB students. The orientation ended with lunch at Balboa’s cafeteria. Students left feeling energized and excited about the opportunities awaiting them next school year.

Science Garden Update

Michael Glenn, a biologist from the Fish and Wildlife, returned to Juanamaria for a planting day. 2nd graders dug holes and prepared the root base of plants for transfer into the garden, then patted dirt around each plant to secure it into place. Planter beds were built and placed throughout the garden for a future planting. Students were excited to see the garden begin to take shape with native plants which will help attract pollinators. Come stop by our new living classroom! Tremendous thanks and recognition to Mrs. Gaertner who wrote the grant to fund the Ventura Education Partnership (VEP) project. Thanks to Mr. Gaertner for building the planter boxes and all his help. Thank you to Michael Glenn for his advice and support in this process. Now let the growing begin!

Biography Ball

Each year 3rd graders at Juanamaria study a historic figure of their choosing. Each student’s research is presented as a cereal box or hanging mobile which spotlights key aspects of the person studied, in addition to writing a 3 paragraph report. On Biography Ball Day, students come to school dressed in a likeness of the person they studied and present their project to classmates. In the evening, students return to school in costume and make a brief presentation on stage about the historic figure. The evening ended with the students joined in song, celebrating the historic figures’ contributions to society.
