Chapter 10By: Paula Tatum

Page 2: Weathering and soil formation!

Weathering Weathering is the breakdown of rock into

smaller and smaller pieces.

Page 3: Weathering and soil formation!

Mechanical Weathering Mechanical Weathering is simply the

breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by physical means.

Page 4: Weathering and soil formation!

Chemical Weathering Chemaical weathering is the chemaical

breakdown of rocks and minerals into new substances.

Page 5: Weathering and soil formation!

Abrasion Abrasion is the action of rock and

sediment grinding against each other and wearing away exposed surfaces

Page 6: Weathering and soil formation!

Acid Precipitation Acid Precipitation is precipitation the

contains acid to air pollution.

Page 7: Weathering and soil formation!

Oxidation Oxidation is a chemaical reaction in

which an element such as iron, combines with oxygen to form an oxide.

Page 8: Weathering and soil formation!

Differential Weathering Differential Weathering is a process by

which softer, less weather-resistant rocks wear away, leaving harder, more weather-resistant rock behind.

Page 9: Weathering and soil formation!

Soil Soil is a loose mixture of small mineral

fragments and organic material.

Page 10: Weathering and soil formation!

Bedrock Bedrock is the layer of rock beneath soil.

Page 11: Weathering and soil formation!

Parent rock Parent rock is the rock that is the source

of soil.

Page 12: Weathering and soil formation!

Humus Humus is soils that contain very small

particles of decayed plant and animal material.

Page 13: Weathering and soil formation!

Topsoil Topsoil is the top layer of soil.

Page 14: Weathering and soil formation!

Leaching Leaching is the process by which

rainwater dissolves and carries away the minerals and nutrients in topsoil.

Page 15: Weathering and soil formation!

Soil conservation Soil conservation consists of the various

methods by which humans take care of the soil.

Page 16: Weathering and soil formation!

Erosion Erosion is the process by which wind and

water transport soil and sediment from one location to another.

Summary Weathering tells the erosion, soil

conservation, leaching, soil, abrasion, Acid precipitation, oxidation, topsoil, bedrock, parent rock, humus, then it is chemical weathering, mechanical weathering, and differential weathering. Weathering makes a different in our climate, and the world we live in today.
