LEARN ABOUT CLOUDS
Types of clouds video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yod3wMbFHUY
The three main types of clouds
High-level clouds (5-13 km): cirrocumulus, cirrus, and cirrostratus.
Mid-level clouds (2-7 km): altocumulus, altostratus, and nimbostratus.
Low-level clouds (0-2 km): stratus, cumulus, cumulonimbus, and stratocumulus.
Cumulus, Stratus, and Cirrus
https://web.extension.illinois.edu/treehouse/clouds.cfm?Slide=5
There are three main cloud types.
Cumulus clouds are the puffy clouds that look like puffs of cotton. Cumulus clouds that do not get very tall are indicators
of fair weather. If they do grow tall, they can turn into thunderstorms. The bottom of cumulus clouds are fairly close to
the ground.
Stratus clouds look like flat sheets of clouds. These clouds can mean an overcast day or steady rain. They may stay in
one place for several days.
Cirrus clouds are high feathery clouds. They are up so high they are actually made of ice particles. They are indicators of
fair weather when they are scattered in a clear blue sky.

Have the children use their worker fingers to pull apart cotton balls. You can pull them apart a few times and
stretch the cotton to make clouds. You can talk about what kids of clouds you are making.
How Do Clouds Form?
Clouds form with changing moisture from a gas to l iquid through a process called convection.
According to Live Science, “As solar radiation heats the ground and the air immediately above it , the warm air becomes lighter and the f low of air carries this warm air upward. As the air rises, the temperature decreases and so does the amount of water vapor that the air can hold. This vapor rapidly condenses and soon clouds — composed of countless bil l ions of tiny water droplets or ice crystals — result. These droplets are exceedingly small, averaging about 10 microns in diameter (a micron is one -mill ionth of a meter; ice crystals are much larger but less concentrated). Virtually all types of clouds and precipitation are due to rising air.”
