After jointly opening the first session of intra-Afghan meet- ing, Potzel Markus in a tweet said: “We have taken the initi- ative for this dialogue to pave the way for peace in Afghani- stan.” The envoy maintained that talks were not enough, add- ing that dialogue should turn into a meaningful negotiating process. He made it clear that the peo- ple of Afghanistan could only determine the future of their country. KABUL - The Wolesi Jirga on Sunday elected lawmakers Ka- rimullah Attal as secretary and Erfanullah Erfan as deputy secretary of the lower house of Parliament through a ballot. After months of confrontation and disputes over the speaker position, Mir Rahman Rahma- ni was elected as speaker and head of the Wolesi Jirga for its 17th legislative term. Amir Khan Yar was elected as first deputy speaker with 131 votes while Ahmad Shah Ramazan was elected as sec- ond deputy speaker with 119 votes. Asadullah Shahbaz and Ka- rimullah Attal were candidates for the secretary position and Javid Safi and Erfanul- lah Erfan were candidates for deputy secretary of the lower house. However, none of the candidates were able to win the secret vote. Khalilzad Acknowledges Progress Made During Talks with Taliban KABUL - The top diplomat tweeted: “The last 6 days of talks have been the most productive sessions to date. We made sub- stantive progress on all 4 parts of peace agreement.” The four peace agreements are counter-terrorism assurances, troops’ withdrawal, and partici- pation in intra-Afghan dialogue, negotiations, permanent and comprehensive ceasefire. “We’re pausing talks today to support intra-Afghan dialogue (an intra-Afghan conference for peace), a critical milestone in the #AfghanPeaceProcess. There is still important work left to be done before we have an agree- ment. We will resume on the 9th after the dialogue.” Sohail Shaheen, Taliban po- litical office spokesman, said there would be two-day break in US-Taliban talks because of intra-Afghan talks and it would resume on July 9 after the dia- logue. He said they were satisfied from the progress of the negotiations and hope that the important work left to be done before any agreement. The seventh round of peace talks between the warring sides has been ongoing over the past nine days, but so far no details about any further progress in the talks have been made public.
