What's the Difference Between Weather and Climate?

The difference between weather and climate is a measure of time. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long periods of time.

Give an example of Climate Change.

Ex. Stories from parents and grandparents about how snow was always piled up to their waists as they trudged off to school. Many areas of the country today haven't experienced those kinds of snow-packed winters.

The Role of Heat Transfer in Weather

·Heat always moves from a warmer place to a cooler place.

Question:

If a cup of coffee and a bowl of ice cream are left on the teachers desk in this room what would happen to them? Why? (Assume that know one is going to eat or drink the items)

·Hot objects in a cooler room will cool to room temperature.

·Cold objects in a warmer room will heat up to room temperature.

Conduction is the movement of energy (ex. heat) through a solid.

Convection

Convection is the transfer of heat through a fluid.

What is a fluid?

Convection is the main process for moving heat through an environment.

- Hot air rises and cold air falls/sinks- Thunder storms and rain showers are created due to convection currents.

Radiation

Radiation is the movement of electromagnetic waves through space. Heat is transferred when the waves come into contact with an object.

An object with a dull/dark surface will absorb and emit infra-red radiation at a faster rate than an object with a shiny/light surface.
