“Over the River and Through the Woods”

Over the river, and through the woods,To Grandmother’s house we go;

The horse knows the way,To carry the sleigh,

Through the white and drifted snow.Over the river, and through the woods,

Oh, how the wind does blow!It stings the toes,And bites the nose,

As over the ground we go.

This story was inspired by this song:

Author Lydia Maria Child wrote a poem called “The New-England Boy’s Song about Thanksgiving Day.” It was published in 1844. Eventually, the poem became a song, though some of the words were changed. The poem told about visiting Grandfather’s house!
