The University of Dayton’s Rivers Institute has a new addition to its fleet of kayaks and canoes — a 53-foot tractor-trailer. The RiverMobile is a mobile learning studio that travels to schools and communities throughout the Great Miami
River Watershed. Five unique classrooms deliver experiential education geared toward middle school
students. But this is a message — and a medium — that appeals to learners of all ages.

WE’RE DRIVEN TO PRESERVE OUR
NATURAL RESOURCES.
Exploring Our Aquifer and Water
Goal: Students learn about the water reclamation process and discover why our buried valley aquifer is a unique natural resource.
Classroom Features• Four videos show the aquifer’s
impact on our region.• Six steps to understanding the
public water treatment system.
Exploring Our History
Goal: Students gain perspective on the formation of the Great Miami Valley and the impact local leaders had on the development of our flood protection system.
Classroom Features• Timeline spans from glacial to
modern time.• Video describes our flood
protection system.• Map highlights five local dry
dams.• Explains the interaction between
dry dams and parkland.
Exploring Our Global Responsibility
Goal: Students develop a greater understanding of how they impact local and global watersheds; they then pledge personal responsibility for being stewards of our water.
Classroom Features• Tent set up outside RiverMobile. • Geological map of the United
States, America’s rivers, surrounding nations and neighboring oceans to emphasize the water trail from the Great Miami River to the Gulf of Mexico.
Exploring Our Rivers
Goal: Students virtually tour a river ecosystem and identify plant, fish and animal species.
Classroom Features• Fourteen-foot canoe and water
safety equipment.• Imitation examples of native plant,
fish and animal species.• Identification panels to distinguish
native and non-native species.
Exploring Our Watershed
Goal: Students identify their hometowns and understand the concept of a regional watershed.
Classroom Features• Map depicts the rivers and cities in
the Great Miami River Watershed.• Pollutants awareness
demonstration.• Water recreation safety
equipment.
