While he cared for his wife Sherrill as she faced cancer, he saw firsthand that medical care is far more than treating the disease. As Ward spent countless days with Sherrill at the Cancer Center, he met many patients whose battles with cancer were further complicated by non-medical concerns. Lack of reliable transportation prevented many from always making their treatment appointments. Others could not afford nutritious food or medicine. “We were fortunate not to have that stress on top of a life-threatening diagnosis,” says Ward. He then asked his wife’s physician how he could help those patients. “With her guidance, I worked with the Office of Institutional Advancement to establish a program to provide gas and grocery gift cards for those in need.” The social workers reported what a huge impact his annual support was making. After seeing the success of the program, Ward made the decision to continue his giving through a legacy gift in memory of his beloved Sherrill. “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago” — Warren Buffett Legacy Giving We Would Like to Hear From You Tell us your story.
