Impresario Society

Welcome to a new year in the fine and performing arts at North Central College. I hope you will find some entertaining reading in the following pages. By that I mean reading about some of the finest entertainers in the business who will be coming to Naperville and North Central College for the 2017-2018 season.

This is truly a group effort beyond the skilled team that actually designs this wonderful brochure every year. It is the combined efforts of my arts advisory board who suggest artists they would like to see, the urging of the agents who want to get their artists into our wonderful facilities, and the availability of the artists who would be THE best for you—our loyal fine and performing arts-loving audiences.

You may notice some familiar faces in this year’s lineup. When I brought The Tenors here two years ago, they performed one of the best holiday shows that has been on this campus. We will be bringing back our annual performance by Jim Peterik and World Stage. As always, we know Jim will be here, but we won’t know who will be with him until mid-December. I tell patrons that you get the most for your ticket-buying dollar with this show. The concert begins at 8:15 p.m. and usually goes well past midnight! That’s four hours of some of the best in the business in the Wentz!

We, of course, have some new faces this year as well. I always get extra excited about at least one novel artist each year. This year it is two artists. We scout out talent at the national convention in New York in early January. (That is a letter all of its own!) This year, we had an agent insist we come early to hear two of his acts. He was sure we would love them. He was right! We are presenting both of his acts: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Velvet Caravan.

Velvet Caravan first. If you have not been to one of our cabaret performances, you are missing a wonderful Sunday evening. Velvet Caravan will be our March cabaret. If you are going to take a chance on something new, make it this performance. “Gypsy Jazz is the root of our sound and style, but we are far from being a traditional band in that genre,” explains the group’s cofounder, classically trained, Venezuelan-born violinist Ricardo Ochoa. The artists are wildly entertaining. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Now for Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Picture the clean, powerful sound of Chicago. Add to that the precise movement of The Temptations and, to cap it off, a very unique smattering of hip hop. That is Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. You will want to see this group now; they are destined to be huge and you can say you were there before their meteoric climb.

How about if we extend summer just a bit with Summer of Love, a tribute to the music of 1967? The show opens our season in September. Or, how about a bit of reggae with The Wailers in January? To add to the fun, we will have an Impresario Lounge with this concert. What could be better than that?

Have fun selecting your shows for this season. Remember, buy any 3 shows and get 10% off, 4 shows for 15%, and 5 shows or more for 20% off. And be sure to check out our Home for the Holidays in Naperville special inside! See you soon, and now, on with the show!

Sunday, January 14, 3 p.m. Pfeiffer Hall, $60, $48, $10With words penned in 1960 by Langston Hughes that still resonate as if written by a lyricist today and amplified by larger-than-life forces, this tribute concert includes orchestra, opera, jazz vocals, spoken word, archival audio samples and video. “Ask Your Mama” is the single epic, multimedia jazz/symphonic composition that will mark this 30th anniversary MLK Tribute concert. This exhilarating journey bursts the boundaries of time, place and verbal expression to trace the currents and tributaries of cultural diasporas. Experience a vivid sonic tapestry of hot jazz, German lieder, cha-cha, patriotic songs, post bop, Middle Eastern music and Afro-Caribbean drumming.

Sunday, May 20, 6 p.m. Madden Theatre, $35, $30Every so often, a truly special Broadway season comes along. Vocalist Tommy Hensel and pianist Carolyn Brady Riley, joined by a cast of talented young musical theater artists, celebrate “Broadway 1967” with highlights from “Cabaret”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Funny Girl”, “Hello, Dolly!”, “Mame”, “Man of La Mancha” and more!

Sunday, January 21, 6 p.m. Madden Theatre, $35, $30She still remains a music icon: Miss Peggy Lee. Singer, songwriter, actress, star of film and television and as cocreator and vocal star of Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp”, she had a potent combination of independence, appetite for work and natural talent that fueled her career for some 50 years. Spider Saloff pays homage to the smoldering, understated style of Peggy Lee.

Sunday, April 29, 6 p.m. Madden Theatre, $35, $30“The Hands of Liberace” is a celebration of Liberace performed by Philip Fortenberry, one of America's premiere pianists of stage and screen. The evening is full of beautiful and intriguing stories mixed with some of the most famous music played by Liberace himself.

Sunday, March 25, 6 p.m. Madden Theatre, $35, $30If one was to name one Savannah-based musical act that most exemplifies this time-honored, eclectic and adventurous city, they’d be hard pressed to find a more appropriate ambassador than Velvet Caravan. This acoustic-based quintet of guitar, violin, standup bass, percussion and keyboards weaves a thick thread of Latin and Gypsy music into acoustic swing jazz.

Sunday, February 25, 6 p.m. Madden Theatre, $35, $30Nat King Cole was unmatched in his time for the sophistication, taste and sheer musicality he brought to the standards he made his own. Come hear how Tammy McCann, one of today’s premier jazz stylists, brings her one-of-a-kind voice to these classic love songs and makes them her own.

Sally KoJuly 14 - August 27Ko’s work is an exploration of physical forms, colors, textures and spatial relationships. The paintings and sculptural installations are the result of manipulated motions that involve an intuitive and calculated process of applying pigments and mediums into the surface. Ko begins with a fragmented idea. Through the process of experimentation, each work begins to react to the creative moment and emotional state of mind. Ko’s challenge in each of her works is transforming inner-conflicting chaos and emotions into a coherent beautiful work. The end result, abstract in nature, allures viewers to reflect on their own experiences.

Renee McGinnis September 1 - October 3Many structures Renee McGinnis paints are surrounded by topiary gardens of a misdirected beauty, suggesting man’s infallible desire to control nature. The once luxurious ocean liners and the glory of man’s energies have great steel panels missing from their broken hulls,

where they sit cracked and beached in a deceptively beautiful marshland or stricken on a violent sea. These ships become a tender metaphor for the earth and her fragility.

Carol BrookesOctober 6 - November 22Brookes sees the world as layers of structure and surface which have resulted in PULSE and SLANT. These two related series of works are made of frame-like boxes constructed of wood and canvas and filled with sculptural structures and mixed media materials. They are in essence wall sculptures that create a strong architectural presence.

"Winter Wonderland" Juried Show ENTRY DEADLINE OCTOBER 20December 1 - January 14"Winter Wonderland" is Schoenherr Gallery’s first juried show and is open to all artist levels.

North Central College Art DepartmentJanuary 19 - February 25The exhibit features works from the North Central College Art Department Faculty. The exhibitor name(s) will be announced at a later date.

LeRoy Neiman Golf CollectionMarch 9 - April 8The Leroy Neiman Golf Series is part of North Central College's Art Collection and was donated by David and Donna Tierney.

Known for his colored and detailed images of sporting events, LeRoy Neiman was probably the most popular artist in the U.S before he died in June 2012. Many of Neiman’s paintings are about sports ranging from basketball, boxing, billiards, and hockey to gymnastics, shot put, swimming, and cycling. His work characteristically uses Pop Art with dramatic brushwork and vibrant color.

ARTIST RECEPTIONSMeet the artists, hear their stories and learn more about

their work at artist receptions. Light appetizers are served, and the events are free and open to the public.

Jen Dodson “ROUSE” A FASHION + ART INSTALLATIONApril 13 - May 27In this exhibition, Dodson creates an art visualization of the interplay between fashion and music, giving life to her work as a stylist and producer of fashion shows. Through the use of photography and styled looks, Dodson showcases the impact fashion has on the music industry. Using imagery from the styled shoots of local musicians, she documents a multitude of genres and styles and encourages viewers to see the resulting relationships.

Morgan CraigJune 1 - July 8The architectural structures acting as both repositories and as vehicles for memory profoundly influenced culture and identity by providing a tangible framework through which facets of a society can be expressed. Craig is inspired to build his body of work dealing with how identity is influenced by this type of architectural edifice present in a given landscape.

Sherri Denault, Margie Glass Sula & Alicia Forestall-BoehmSeptember 11 - October 25This exhibit features the work of three Chicagoland artists, Sherri Denault, Alicia Forestall-Boehm and Margie Glass Sula. Together they will showcase mixed media, drawings, paintings and sculptures that play off each other and spark new dialogue surrounding their shared inspirations.

Ramon NayarOctober 29 - January 3Storytelling—the very premise behind Ramon Nayar’s work in creative writing, photography and film—is anchored on words and images. He believes words and images, especially when assembled to complement each other and support an idea and/or unlock new ideas, is what powerful storytelling offers to move the heart and mind.

Joe B. Milosevich and Colin Sherrell January 7 - February 21Despite the obvious polarities in their visuals, artists Joe Milosevich and Colin Sherrell have designed “Differentiating Similarities” to focus on the common ties shared by their artwork. Milosevich amasses rich arrays of collected vintage objects in his elaborate assemblages; whereas, Sherrell creates meticulous hand fabricated minimal and conceptual sculptures with a wide variety of everyday objects. They may be opposites, but imaginably not.
