Ujjain: At Mahasammelan of Farmers Producer
Organisations held during Krishi Mahotsav at Ujjain, Chief
Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the state govern-
ment is considering implementing a scheme under which farmers
will have to repay only 90 percent of loans for purchase of seeds
and fertilisers. He announced to provide facilities on par with
public sector undertakings to Farmers Producer Company. He
said that food processing units will be given 40 percent subsidy
and assistance for construction of cold storage and cold chain.
Shri Chouhan said that Madhya Pradesh is ahead of all in con-
stituting farmers organisations. He said that the state govern-
ment will provide interest subsidy on loans given by banks to
farmers producer organisations at high interest rate. Farmer
Producer Companies should also come forward in food processing
sector. With this, agriculture will become profitable and faces of
farmers will brighten with happiness. The Chief Minister said
that rate of seed transplantation in the state has risen to 30 per-
cent. This has become possible due to formation of farmers pro-
ducer company. He said that when major companies sell produce
of the state on high rates then why not farmers producer compa-
nies do the same? He said that farmers will become rich only
when companies undertake grading, packing and selling at fields.
The Chief Minister said that people of our country go to Israel to
study methods of farming. In times to come, we would develop so
much farming facilities that people will come to Madhya Pradesh
for this. He informed that Rs. 2300 crore Narmada-Khsipra Link
Project is being readied. Efforts are also on to link Parwati and
Kali Sindh rivers.

C’garh govt begins probe into
boy's death due to "sunstroke"
RAIPUR
Experts have suggested to strictly avoid exposure to sun
from 11 am to 3 pm while Chhattisgarh is in grip of heat wave
as harmful Ultra Violet (UV) rays index over Raipur and
Bhilai was recorded at 11 which is seven times above normal.
Concentration of UV radiations goes much higher with high
temperature, they said Shamsh Parvez, environmentalist at
Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University said that high content of
organic carbons released in atmosphere due to industrial belts
using coal with high ash content in them, is a major cause of
increasing heat in the state. He added that UV index over
Raipur and Bhilai was recently recorded at 11 which should be
below than 5 and the phenomenon carries high risk of dermal
problems for people in exposure to sun. Dr Asras Shastri, cli-
matologist expert at Indira Gandhi Agriculture university,
said UV scale calculates from 0-10 index, wherein 0 has the
lowest risk of UV exposure which goes to extreme when reach-
es 10. But radiations are considered as at peak and highly
harmful when it crosses 10. If Raipur records UV index of 11
which was also the phenomenon last year, it indicates that
there is significant damage to the ozone layer in this area." UV
index goes higher due to clear sky and it's at its peak from 11
am to 3 pm, hence, people should avoid exposure to sun or they
carry risk to skin diseases. "It's suggested to cover face, hands,
keep towel or cap on head, use sunglasses and wear lose
clothes."

The Chhattisgarh Government
has initiated an inquiry into the
death of a five-year-old boy due to
"dehydration and sunstroke" in the
forests of Surguja district with CM
Raman Singh today terming the inci-
dent as "horrific". Opposition
Congress has alleged that the boy
died of starvation.
On the direction of CM Raman
Singh, Surguja district collector Ritu
Sen has appointed sub-divisional
magistrate (SDM), Sitapur, MS
Bhagat to probe the incident. The offi-
cial will investigate the circum-
stances which led to the death of Shiv
Kumar Manjhi. Manjhi died while his
brother fell ill after they got separat-
ed from their father in the forests
when they were going to their rela-
tive's place in Sitapur police station
area. Sen had confirmed that Manjhi
died of dehydration and heat-
stroke.However, the Congress
claimed the death was due to starva-
tion. Sen said the postmortem report
of the child has confirmed Manjhi
died due to exposure to sun and
dehydration and ruled out death due
to starvation. However, Congress
has constituted a probe committee
alleging Manjhi died of starvation.
Cong blames govtCongress alleged that family's
ration card was cancelled after their
mother died due to illness and
administration did not issue it in the
name of male member.
Leader of opposition TS
Singhdeo said that the fact that
deceased's mother had died a couple of
months ago, following which the family's
ration card was cancelled, indicates insensi-
tivity on part of the administration. "There
is no rule that says that if there is no women
above 18 years in the family, ration card will
not me made in the name of a male of the
house.
Since the woman in this case had died
and there was no other woman in the fami-
ly, the administration should have taken
steps to transfer the ration card in the name
of the man of the house," he added. Sarguja
district collector Ritu Sen admitted that the
family's ration card was cancelled after the
woman member of the family died due to ill-
ness. "However, we conduct regular drive for
adding names, but none from the family con-
cerned came forward with the request to
issue ration card in the name of male mem-
ber," she claimed.

called next day of mov-
ing application. She said
that 99 lakh 6 thousand
passports have been
issued in the country
during one year denoting
to 17 percent increase.
Citing its reason, she
said that it is due to the
fact that India's rela-
tions with other countries and country's prestige in
the world is increasing. At foundation laying ceremo-
ny of Passport Bhavan here, Swaraj informed that a
passport centre will be opened at Indore. She
informed that youths will be given 6-month intern-

Govt wants to rename MPPEB after scam dentBhopal
Under fire over the MP
Professional Examination
Board (MPPEB) being rat-tled by scams, the state gov-
ernment wants to rename it.
The proposal to rename
MPPEB, possibly to MP
Recruitment and
Examination Board, will be
tabled in the state
Assembly's monsoon session
to be convened in July, a state minister has said. The mat-
ter was discussed during the last state Cabinet meeting, he
said. The state government, under fire from the opposition
- Congress and students' bodies - over the alleged wrong-
doings in MPPEB, wants to rename it in a bid to put to rest
the ghost of scams haunting it. "We have also got a sniff of
the government's move to get the name of the MPPEB
changed. By doing so, the government cannot get rid of the
infamy of the MPPEB that has dented its image nation-
wide," MP Congress unit's
chief spokesman K K Mishra
said. "Our party won't sit
quiet till the high and mightywho are being shielded in the
scam are not prosecuted," he
said. The MPPEB scam's fire
even reached the Raj Bhawan
as Governor Ram Naresh
Yadav was booked in a forest
guard recruitment scam of
the board. However, he
recently got reprieve when MP High Court quashed an FIR
against him saying that he enjoys constitutional immunity
against criminal proceedings while being in gubernatorial
post. Yadav's son Shailesh, an accused in teachers recruit-
ment scam of MPPEB, had earlier died under mysterious
conditions in Lucknow. The Governor's Officer on Special
Duty, O P Yadav, is in judicial custody for more than a year
for his involvement in a recruitment scam of MPPEB.
Besides, former state minister Laxmikant Sharma is also
in jail in connection with teachers recruitment scam.
MPPEB's image has been battered by scams in PMT from
2008 to 2013, pre-PG medical course 2012, contractual
teachers' eligibility test 2011, subedar and platoon com-
mander test 2012, police constable test 2012, forest guard
recruitment test 2013, data entry operator test 2012 and
traffic constable recruitment test 2012.

The results of economic policies
adopted by Narendra Modi govern-
ment will be reflected on the ground in
three years and the country will get
"complete economic freedom" in 5-7years, Home Minister Rajnath Singh
said here. Addressing a function after
inaugurating the headquarters of the
Chhattisgarh Police, Singh said India
had attained the political freedom
years ago but the economic freedom is
yet to be achieved. "Prime Minister
Narendra Modi has laid the founda-
tion stone for economic freedom one
year ago. We will get the complete eco-
nomic freedom 5-7 years. But people
will get the feeling of economic change
in three years," he said. The Home
Minister said several international
financial rating agencies have termedIndia's economy as the fastest growing
in the world. "First thing we did after
assuming power was to facilitate the
poorest of the poor to open a bank
account under the Prime Minister's
Jan Dhan Yojana. Now, 99.7 per cent
family is connected with banking sys-
tem," he said. Singh said the Jan
Dhan Yojana has been included in the
Guniess Book of World Record. He
said among various decisions of the
NDA government, one was that what-
ever amount is to be paid to a foreign
military arms vendor, half of the
amount that vendor has to invest in
India. "This will lead to setting up of
more industries and creation of new
jobs," he added. The Home Minister
also lauded the contribution of the
Chhattisgarh Police to fighting
Maoists saying the first condition of
development is security and the state
police force has been doing commend-
able job. Singh also termed Naya
Raipur as the first well-organized city
in the country.
Chief Minister Raman Singh said
that with the completion of one year in
office of Modi government, "a big
change" has been witnessed in the
country. He said the state has been
given additional funds and new devel-
opment projects are coming up. The
Home Minister was briefed variousaspects of the anti-Naxal operations
currently going on in Chhattisgarh.
He also visited some of the Naxal-
affected areas including Summa,
Dantewada and Jagdalpur, and
reviewed security situation there. The
minister interacted with security per-
sonnel deployed in anti-Naxal opera-
tions.

In a bid to promote organic farming in the state, the
Chhattisgarh government plans to prepare a roadmap by
the end of this year. "We will prepare a roadmap for the pro-
motion of organic farming, which will include a time-bound
strategy to expand this kind of farming across the state. The
road map will be prepared within six months," state
Agriculture Minister Brijmohan Agrawal said. Keeping in
view that the state has a huge potential for organic farming,
the state government has already launched 'Organic
Farming Mission', he said. Under the mission, technical and
economic assistance is being extended to farmers to take up
the practice of organic farming based on geographical condi-
tion, climate and soil quality in each district. He further said
the aim of the agriculture scientists will not be fulfilled until
they take their researches and innovation to the fields.
Scientists have to reach out to farmers to explain the bene-
fits of organic farming. The Minister also informed that the
government target is to develop the Naxal-affected
Dantewada district as an organic farming district.

Parrikar rules out Army deployment
in anti-Naxal operations in C'garh
RaipurRuling out the possibility of deploying Army in anti-
Naxal operations, Defence Minister Manohar Parrkar has
said if demanded, armed forces would extend "logistical
support" and "provide training" to police in tackling the
menace. "Foreigners are not involved in it (naxal move-
ment). We use army where outside forces are involved. We
use army against terrorists in Kashmir," Parrikar told
reporters in response to a query on whether army would
be roped against growing naxalism in Chhattisgarh.
The minister, however, added, "We can provide training
and logistical support to the paramilitary and local
police if demanded." Parrikar was in the state capital to
inaugurate Jankalyan Mela, an exhibition-cum-fair
showcasing the achievements of Narendra Modi-led
NDA government in the past one year. Meanwhile,
responding to Congress' criticism that the Centre was
not taking a stand on 'One Rank-One Pension' policy,
Parrikar said his government has made a concrete
framework over it and it would be rolled out soon.
"Earlier during the UPA rule only assurances were
given in this direction. For the first time it's us, who have
made a concrete framework over OPOR scheme. Congress
claimed that they had made provision of fund of Rs 500
crore. Then how did it lapse?" he said. The Defence
Ministry has forwarded a proposal in this direction which
is more or less acceptable to everyone and very soon it
would be declared, he added. Reacting to Congress' 'suit-
boot ki sarkar' jibe against the Modi government, Parrikar
took a dig at Rahul Gandhi over his 56-days sabbatical. "A
government should not be judged by its clothing, but itshould be judged by its activities. He (Rahul) should tell
what he was doing for 56 days in Thailand and what
clothes he was wearing over there," he said. Replying to a
question on Rafale fighter jets deal with France, the min-
ister said, "I would not like to comment on it unless every-
thing is finalised."

MP releasing water from Ban Sagar to UPdespite non-compliance of agreement
Bhopal
MP is releasing drinking and
nistar water from Ban Sagar to
UP despite non-compliance of
agreement by the latter. Water is
being released from Ban Sagar to
maintain minimum flow of water
in Son river from time to time.
Quantity of water is not 60 cumec
as per demand, since such quanti-
ty of water is required for irriga-
tion. Such flow of water is not nec-
essary for drinking and nistar. At
present, about 5 cubic meter per
second water is being released in
Son river due to which there is no
crisis of drinking and nistar water
in low-lying areas of the command
area. UP has demanded release of
water in Son river for the first
time. Earlier in 2013, it had
demanded water for testing of
canal, which was released. But,
this demand ended automatically
with breaking up of the canal. It is
noteworthy that Ban Sagar is a
joint project of MP, UP and Bihar.
MP has constructed a large dam
on Son river near village Devlond
in Shahdol district. Its utility
water storage capacity is 543
cubic metres. Share of these states
in the dam is 2 : 1 : 1, of which
MP’s share is : 2. A sum of Rs.
1697 crore has been spent on con-
struction of the project. So far, UP
has paid Rs. 467 crore of its share
while Rs. 64 crore is outstanding.
In Ban Sagar agreement dated
September 16, 1973, all partner
states had agreed to share cost of
the dam.
UP has refused to share
amount in maintenance head. Ban
Sagar Control Council and
Central Water Commission was
informed about it. For removing
this impasse, the Engineer-in-
Chief convened a meeting at
Jabalpur on January 13, 2015 at
with UP’s Chief Engineer reiterat-
ed that UP will give no amount for
maintenance of Ban Sagar dam.
Maintenance of Ban Sagar dam is
costing Rs. 50 crore per annum. In
this regard, Engineer-in-Chief of
MP had informed vide letters in
December 2014 and January 2015
that MP will not store water share
of UP in amount against mainte-
nance is not received. It is note-
worthy that a meeting on this
issue was held in May 2013 which
was attended by officers of MP, UP
and Bihar. It was decided at that
meeting that the three states will
share cost of operation and main-
tenance of the dam. Only after
that, water share for concerning
state will be stored in the dam for
supply to it later. Bihar govern-
ment is sharing expenditure on
operation and maintenance of the
dam. It is being provided water in
that proportion. But despite
agreement, UP government nei-
ther partnered in operation and
maintenance of the dam nor had
any dialogue in this regard with
MP government. Due to it water of
UP’s share is not being stored for
last one year. MP government had
told UP 6 months ago to pay
amount of its share so that water
can be stored for it in the dam.
But UP government did not show
any interest in payment of
amount.

Outlining the various steps and
policy decisions taken by the
Narendra Modi-led NDA gov-
ernment in its first year in office,
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
said “we are liberalizing and
reforming. This government is
pro-growth, pro-development.
The government's policy would
be one of mainta ining arms-
length distance from business
houses.” Jaitley said that, “When
passage of reforms is obstructed,
we must remember it is the jour-
ney to 10 per cent growth rate
that falls prey”. Saying that India
is an un-pensioned society, the
minister said the recently
launched insurance schemes by
the government had reached 7.5
crore people in a few weeks and
the insurance schemes will bring
the benefits of insurance to the
common man. The new
MUDRA Bank will bring
finance to 5.7 crore small entre-
preneurs, the FM added. He said
that the banking sector was
under a lot of pressure due to
global slowdown but reduction
in non-performing assets is a
good sign. While speaking on
inflation, Jaitley said, “Impact of
falling oil prices is dual - on
imports as well as exports.
Inflation control has been a posi-
tive achievement of the govern-
ment.” The FM said that the
respect for India and PM
Narendra Modi had increased
not only in India, but in the ent ire
world. Responding to a question
on the Goods and Services Tax
(GST), Jaitley said, Government
will make every effort to ensure
that GST is implemented on the
announced deadline.” For infra-
structure, Jaitley said, the gov-
ernment has found ways to spend
higher through public spending.
There was a general environment
of gloom one year back, on the
economic front in this country.
Now there is an environment of
enthusiasm in this country,
Jaitley said.

"Modi government is playing with the national wel-
fare and national security. This government neither
has policy nor priorities to strengthen the county,"
Joshi said in a press conference Joshi said Modi has
put in all his efforts in last one year only for "pol-
ishing his international image" instead of securing
borders and strengthening internal security. "The
Centre's unsuccessful policies, programmes and
strategic predicament are the evidence of the fact
that India has lost its strategic vision in the area of
defence," the former Union minister said. Joshi said
Modi government's "lack of concern" towards the
country's security is evident from a number of
issues. "...Reducing defence expenditure, frequent
ceasefire violations, rising tension on border,
Pakistan and China Infiltration into Indian territory,
no decision over one-rank one-pension scheme; all
these issues show Modi government's unconcern
towards the country's security," he alleged. Recalling
the initiatives undertaken by the erstwhile UPA gov-
ernment for securing the country's borders with
China, Joshi said the Congress-led regime had made a
provision of whopping Rs 85,478 crore for various
strategic projects including constituting the mountain
strike corps, but surprisingly the new Modi govern-
ment has deducted expenditure under these projects
to its half. "Shockingly three weeks ahead of Modi's

Supporters of BJP legislator Shivratan Sharma, who repre-
sents Bhatapara constituen-
cy, revolted against the
party brass recently. They
organized a protest in the
capital raising slogans
against non-inclusion of
Sharma in the cabinet. His
supporters threatened to
block a national highway.
Sharma, however, clarified
he tried to pacify his sup-
porters saying that party's
decision was final and binding on workers. BJP workers in
Jashpurnagar also hit the streets for denying kin of late Dilip
Singh Judeo a berth in the Cabinet. The workers and sup-
porters of the Jashpur royal family forced shut down and
burnt effigies of CM Raman Singh and raised slogans.
Protesters blocked roads and forced shopkeepers to down
shutters. Judeo's son Yudhvir Singh represents Chandrapur
constituency in Janjgir-Champa district. He is a second-
time legislator. He was hoping to make it to the Raman
Singh ministry during recent cabinet expansion. Ever since
BJP leader and spearhead of 'ghar vapsi' programme Dilip
Singh Judeo's death, his sons and family were feeling side-
lined by the Raman Singh government. They attribute their
alienation to their uncle, Ranvijay Singh Judeo's elevation
to Rajya Sabha. Dilip Singh Judeo, former Union minister,
had launched a 'ghar vapsi' campaign for re-conversion of
Christiansinto Hindu fold in undivided MP and later in
Chhattisgarh. Judeo royals hold considerable clout in tribal-
dominated Jashpur region. Meanwhile, BJP sources said the
ruling party was yet to reach a consensus on its choice for
the post of deputy speaker as some senior legislators, who
were hoping to make it to the cabinet, have refused to
accept the post. They said senior legislator Devji Bhai Patel,
who represents Dharsivan assembly segment, has been
offered the post, but he was not inclined to accept it.

New Delhi
The union cabinet has given its
approval to the re-promulgation of
the land acquisition ordinance but
the move was strongly criticised by
the Congress and the Janata Dal-
United. The cabinet meeting,
chaired by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, gave its approval
to amend the Right to Fair
Compensation and Transparency
in Land Acquisition,
Rehabilitation and Resettlement
(Amendment) Ordinance, 2015.
The land acquisition ordinance
will be promulgated for the third
time. The ordinance was first
promulgated in December last
year to amend the Act passed dur-
ing the United Progressive
Alliance (UPA) government in
2013. A government spokesman
said that changes in the 2013 Act
will facilitate farmers to get better
compensation and rehabilitation
and resettlement benefits" in lieu
of land compulsorily acquired by
the concerned government. PM
Modi said that no decision taken
by his government concerning the
land bill was "anti-farmer". He
said chief ministers insisted on a
change in the 2013 Act and he
thought of addressing their anxi-
eties. Asked if he was confident of
the bill's passage, Modi said it was
not a question of life and death for
him and it was not on the agenda
of his party and the government.
The bill was passed in the Lok
Sabha with official amendments in
March but was not taken up in the
Rajya Sabha where the govern-
ment lacks a majority. The land
ordinance was again promulgated
in April. With the Congress and
several other opposition parties
firmly opposed to the bill brought
by the National Democratic
Alliance (NDA) government, it has
been referred to the joint commit-
tee of parliament. The recommen-
dation of the cabinet for re-promul-
gation of the ordinance will be sent
to President Pranab Mukherjee.
Meanwhile, Congress leader
Randeep Singh Surjewala said the
government decision for re-
promulgating the ordi-
nance was an "insult" to
parliament and the govern-
ment should seek forgive-
ness from people on the
"insensitive decision".
Accusing Modi of "double-
faced anti-farmer attitude",
Surjewala said the prime
minister had said he was
open to suggestions on the land bill
but his government again put its
stamp on the ordinance. "On the
one hand, the BJP-led government
forms a joint committee to have a
re-look at the bill, on the other
hand it plays a cruel trick (to
approve re-promulgation of ordi-
nance)," he said, adding the deci-
sion should be immediately taken
back. In Bihar, which will face
assembly elections in a few
months, JD-U leader and Chief
Minister Nitish Kumar said the
Modi government was "trying to
impose" the land bill on farmers
and it will prove costly. "Modi's
government is desperate to pass
the land acquisition bill in the
Rajya Sabha to impose it on mil-
lions of farmers who are protesting
against it across the country,"
Nitish Kumar said in Patna.

Discrimination, violenceagainst any community won't be tolerated: PM Modi
New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it clear that any discrimi-
nation or violence against any community in the nation would not be tol-
erated. "I have said this before and I say it again: any discrimination or
violence against any community will not be tolerated. My position on this
is very clear: 'Sab ka saath, sab ka vikas.' We stand for each of the 1.25
billion Indians regardless of caste or creed and we will work for the
progress of each of them. Every faith in our country has equal rights; it
is equal not only before the law but also before society," said Modi. He
added that the constitution of the country guarantees religious freedom
to every citizen and that is non- negotiable. "Our Constitution guaran-
tees religious freedom to every citizen and that is not negotiable. The tra-
dition of welcoming, respecting and honouring all faiths is as old as India
itself. As Swami Vivekananda said: 'We believe not only in universal tol-
eration, but we accept all religions as true.' This principle of equal
respect and treatment for all faiths has been a part of India's ethos for
thousands of years. And that is how it became integral to the
Constitution of India," said Modi. "Our Constitution did not evolve in a
vacuum. It has roots in the ancient cultural traditions of India. I expect
that everyone will understand and respect this," he added
New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said
that his government has taken several
reform measures in order to tackle the
agrarian crisis. On being asked how his gov-
ernment plans to stem the tide of farmer
suicides and the agrarian distress prevalent
in the country, the Prime Minister said, the
root causes of the problem find mention in
your question itself. This is a very important
issue and the Government is concerned
about it. We have responded to the recent
agrarian crisis with alacrity. We have
undertaken several reforms.
He said the Union Government has
enhanced the relief norms for compensation
against crop loss by 50 percent. The limit of
minimum crop damage, for grant of com-
pensation, has been reduced from 50percent
to 33 percent. Norms have been relaxed to
allow procurement of damaged food grains
at MSP rates. The target of agricultural
credit has been enhanced in our two consec-
utive budgets. Modi, while admitting that
the agrarian crisis was endemic and is the
result of decades of mismanagement, also
listed some of the projects undertaken by
the Centre to address these concerns. The
PM said the problem in agriculture is
endemic. Nothing much was done for six
long decades. But we have started long-term
steps for the farm sector. To address the
issue of access to irrigation for every farm,
and efficient utilization of water, the
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana
(PMKSY) has been started. Blue Revolution
which aims to improve production and pro-
ductivity in the fisheries sector is also an
action point. We have launched the soil
health card scheme, Modi said. The price
stabilization fund with a corpus of Rs. 500
crores has also been set up for perishable
commodities. Rashtriya Gokul Mission has
been commenced with the objective of con-
serving and developing indigenous cattle
breeds. We have made honest and sincere
efforts for rural development. I have recent-
ly launched the Kisan Channel for
giving timely information to farmers on
inputs and markets. In the coming days, I
would like to see more focused action on
increasing Farm Productivity; Rural
Industrialization; Skill Development in
rural areas and rural trades, and faster
Investments in Rural Infrastructure includ-
ing cold chain, he added.

Government wants to promote India’s
traditional perfume, ‘Itr’, business in
the state for which he is very close to
signing a twin city agreement with
Grasse, world’s perfume capital.
According to an official statement by
the UP Government, Yadav, who made
his political debut in Kannauj in 2000,
said, “UP Government wants to pro-
mote the ‘Itr’business as one of the pri-
mary businessesin the state. “Francecan play a major role in this regard,” he
said adding that the bilateral relation
between India and France would be
strengthened further through this busi-
ness. Yadav said that Kannauj is India’s
perfume capital just like Grasse is
world’s perfume capital. The Kannauj-
Grasse pact will facilitate technology
exchange, ingredient sourcing and
partnership among perfume manufac-
turers of the two cities. The pact is
expected to revive and modernise the
struggling indigenous perfume industry
and help it tap international markets.
The UP CM said that the new
technologies will help boosting the
small perfume industry and will also
give a boost to floriculture and farmers
in the state. The pact will also bring up
employment opportunities in the state.
He was confident that UP will emerge
as one of the major hubs globally for
the perfume industry. He said that mak-ing ‘Gulkand’ tax free would be anoth-
er step towards boosting floriculture in
the state. Besides a commercial tie-up,
the Kannauj-Grasse pact would also
entail a branding exercise both for per-
fumes worn by people on their body
and those used in food material.
Agreement for sourcing of ingredients,
plant extracts, and perfume s from
Kannauj would be signed with Grasse.

lunch served by a fisherman's family at
a hamlet near here and said he would
visit the beach again to taste Kerala's
delicious tapioca and spicy fish curry. "I
am going to come back here again
because I was given a very, very tasty
fish lunch," Rahul said addressing a
fishermen's 'Sangamam' (conclave) here
during his Kerala visit. Meanwhile,
slamming the Narendra Modi govern-
ment over its decision to extend ban on
trawling, Rahul also said, "the fish
brought by the fishermen is better than
the fish brought by trawlers." Rahul vis-
ited almost all 51 houses in the fisher-
men colony at Blangad beach here and
at the end of his visit he was served
lunch at the small house of Kizhakkoot
Karunakaran. The lunch was prepared
by Karunakaran's three-member family
including his wife Thankamani and
daughter Neetu, local MLA and
Congress leader TN Prathapan said. The
Congress Vice President was served
curry and a variety of fish fry items. CM
Oommen Chandy and Home Minister
Ramesh Chennithala joined Gandhi for
the lunch at the fisherman's house.
Later, Rahul interacted with the family
members of fishermen in the colony and
heard their grievances. Addressing them
in English which was simultaneously
translated into Malayalam by
Chennithala, Gandhi said land is becom-
ing more and more valuable and the
central government was trying to take it
away from farmers.
"So we are fighting them and trying
to make sure that they do not take land
away from the farmers. In the same way
that they are taking land away from
farmers, they are also trying to sea away
from fishermen." "For people living
near the sea, the sea is like a mother.
They are taking your mother and giving
the mother away to somebody else. Just
because they are more powerful and
richer than you. I think this is very, very
unfortunate," he said and assured them
that he would stand with them in their
fight to protect their sea. He said, "The
Prime Minister has got a new slogan
called Make in India. He is under the
impression that poor people do not
make this country. And in fact it is the
poor people who make this country."
"Wherever the government tries to take
away the rights of poor people...they
will be confronted by the Congress
party," Gandhi said.

New Delhi
MUDRA has been set up with a corpus of Rs 20,000
crores to help the small businessmen, who despite being the
country's biggest job creators have historically been starved
of credit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said in an open
letter to the citizens. On the occasion of the first anniversary
of the NDA government, Modi wrote a letter to the citizens
on the different economic issues. “One year ago, you had
entrusted me with the task of building a new India and put-
ting a derailed economy back on track. We have achieved a
lot,” the letter said. “Economic growth has been revived,
and is amongst the fastest in the world. Inflation is substan-
tially down. Fiscal prudence has been restored. Confidence
is up. Foreign investments have increased. This positive out-
look is endorsed by major rating agencies and international
institutions across the world,” Modi said in the letter. “Bold
reforms pending for decades have been implemented. Diesel
prices have been decontrolled. The Goods and Services Tax
(GST) is slated to be introduced next year,” PM said adding
that, “By facilitating companies to Make in India through a
focus on Ease of Doing Business, new jobs are being creat-
ed.” Cooking gas subsidies are being paid directly to bene-
ficiary bank accounts under PAHAL – ensuring the right
amount of subsidy, reaches the right people, at the right
time. FDI limits in insurance, railways and defence produc-
tion have been raised. Moreover, we have embraced the
states as equal partners in national development, working as
Team India in the spirit of cooperative and competitive fed-
eralism, said the letter. Stating that the political interference
in public sector banking Bdecisions is a thing of the past,
Modi said, “Transparent coal auctions and allotments have
mobilized potential revenues of Rs 3.35 lakh crores to coal-
bearing states over the lifespan of mines.” To combat black
money, a Special Investigation Team has been appointed and
a new stringent law passed. Nearly Rs 1 lakh crores of pub-
lic investment have been allocated in this year’s budget to
improve physical as well as digital connectivity. A compre-
hensive transformation of the railways into a locomotive of
growth has begun. Stalled highway projects are being
restructured and revived. Power generation is at an all-time
high. A new National Infrastructure Investment Fund has
been set up with an annual government funding of Rs
20,000 crores, the letter stated. “Economic growth benefits
all Indians,” said Modi adding, “Growth however, has
meaning only if it empowers the poor, farmers, women, as
well as middle and neo-middle classes of all communities.”

a contingent from the National Cricket
Centre (NCC) travels to India for spe-
cialist preparation at the MRF Pace
Foundation in Chennai. McGrath is a
coaching director at the academy
which will welcome a group from the
National Performance Squad as well
as other targeted players.
Australia’s spin coach John Davison
will take a group of batsmen and spin
bowlers to India on Sunday for the first
phase of the camp before they are joined
by four promising pacers and NCC head
coach Troy Cooley for the second half. It
will be the 19th year of the exchange
between Cricket Australia (CA) and MRF
with a reciprocal arrangement in place to
enable two promising Indian fast bowlers
and a coach to attend the NCC later next
month. Cooley said the trip would provide
some players with their first experience of cricket in India while for others it would
enable further refinement of their tech-
nique in differing conditions to Australia.
“Being successful away from home is a
key ambition for us when it comes to
developing our young players, so being
exposed to the conditions in India provides
them with an incredibly valuable experi-
ence,” he said. “Having Glenn McGrath
along will be a wonderful learning oppor-
tunity for the young pacemen we are tak-
ing along, and also more broadly for the
rest of the group. It will be the first time
we have taken the spinners along at the
same time and they’re looking forward tochallenging themselves in the conditions,”
a press release said.
Among the players taking part in the
exchange include Australia A batsman
Cameron Bancroft and paceman Andrew
Fekete who will both tour India in July
with the A squad. Young spinners Jonte
Pattison, Riley Ayre, Mitch Swepson and
all-rounder Ashton Turner will travel in

Batting legends Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav
Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman were named to the
newly-formed advisory cricket committee of the Boardof Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday.
“The president of the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya, has
nominated Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and
V.V.S. Laxman as esteemed members of the Cricket
advisory committee of the BCCI, with immediate
effect,” the BCCI said in a statement. The trio’s “areas
of immediate focus will be to provide guidance to our
national team as we set out to enhance our perform-
ance on overseas engagements, provide direction to
improve our talent pathway and take steps to
strengthen domestic cricket to better prepare our
players to handle the rigours of international cricket”,
it said. Many feel the inclusion of former captains
Ganguly, Tendulkar and ex-vice captain Laxman —
who have a combined experience of 447 Tests among
them — is a big move as India head into a critical
phase where their Test team will be led by young
batsman Virat Kohli, while in the shorter formats
Mahendra Singh Dhoni will continue to lead the side.
In the last couple of years, India’s Test performance
has been marked by overseas series losses in England,
Australia, South Africa and New Zealand that result-
ed in India dropping to the fourth spot in the Testrankings. They were the No.1 team from December
2009, till August 2011.
“I am happy to note that our eminent cricketers
have come forward to lend their experience and
insights as we work towards a common goal of taking
Indian cricket to greater heights,” Dalmiya said on
Monday. “The coming generations are bound to bene-
fit from the guidance that will be provided by these
luminaries and will go a long way in strengthening
our existing system.”

which spanned over 16
years from making his

to playing his last One-

in November, 1987. On the sidelines of the launch of former India opener
Madhav Apte’s autobiography ‘As Luck Would Have It’ on late Friday,
Gavaskar went down memory lane to put forward a couple of incidents
that happened in his debut Test series when India toured the West Indies
in 1971. “I am here today only because of luck. Couple of incidents which
happened against the West Indies in 1971 tour earlier on in my career proves it. “In one of the Tests against them, I was batting on six when I hit
a square cut and the ball was really travelling. Gary Sobers was fielding
in the background and the ball hit him in the chest and fell in the ground
and I survived. I went on to score a half-century,” the former Indian cap-
tain recalled. Gavaskar, who scored 10,122 runs in 125 Tests, put forward
another instance where luck played a big part while batting. “On my way
to my first Test century, I was on 94 when I played forward to a off-spin-
ner and Gary used to stand just at the back of my back pocket and he was
that close. But in anticipation that because I moved forward, Gary moved
to his left towards forward short leg.

A young Muslim woman was refused a
flat for rent here by a builder alleged-
ly on grounds of her religion just days
after a male MBA graduate was
denied a job by a diamond export firm
for similar reasons. Taking serious
note of the incident, Maharashtra
Minority Affairs Minister Eknath
Khadse has promised strict action
against the guilty.
"We are seeking details of this
incident and will deal with the guilty
sternly," Khadse told reporters here.
An activist has also taken up the mat-
ter with the National Commission for
Minorities seeking a probe into the
builder's "discriminatory policy."
25-year-old Misbah Quadri, who
works with a Public Relations agency,
had been living in an apartment at
Kandivali in the western suburbs of
Mumbai since she came to the city
from Gujarat a year ago. Recently, she
planned to move to a flat in Wadala
area but met with a shocking response
from the builder of the apartments.
"After a lot of searching, I finally
found a house at Wadala and paid a
deposit of Rs 24,000 through a broker.
A night before I was to move in, I got
a call from the broker, warning me not
to shift there as it is the builder's pol-
icy not to have Muslim tenants. I tried
to reason with him but he did not
oblige," Quadri said. She claimed that
the broker then asked her to sign a
"no-objection certificate" declaring
that if she faced any harassment from
her neighbours because of her reli-
gion, the builder, the owner and the
broker "would not be legally responsi-
ble." Khadse said those trying to vio-
late the fundamental rights of citizens
will be taken to task.
"Citizens, irrespective of their
faith, are free to purchase and sell
property and seek employment oppor-
tunities anywhere in the country as
well as the state. Those working
against the fundamental right of the
citizens will be dealt with firmly in
accordance with the law," he said. "No
one will be allowed to violate the
Constitutional rights of citizens," he
said.
Narrating her experience, Quadri
said, "I had to move into the flat
though I did not agree with the terms
because the notice period with my pre-
vious flat had expired and there was
nowhere I could go. After a week, the
broker called me again and asked me
to leave. I had no option then but to
leave the flat. Presently I am staying
at a paying guest accommodation in
Bandra." Zeeshan Ali Khan, the MBA
graduate who had applied for an open-
ing in the diamond exports firm on
May 19, had claimed he received a
response within 15 minutes which
said they hired only non-Muslim can-
didates. "I would only like to tell peo-
ple that please don't discriminate peo-
ple on the basis of religion. "I would
like to tell her that don't be demoral-
ized and demotivated. Go ahead and
file a legal action against the residen-
tial society," Khan said reacting to the
ordeal faced by Quadri in her search
for a home.
