RMD Loses A Great Leader In Jimmy Wheeler

By Mike Deputy, District President It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of our dear friend and fellow barber-shopper, Jimmy Wheeler. Jimmy succumbed Wednesday, Nov. 22nd after fighting a gallant battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Lou Gehrigs Disease. Jim was the kind of person that influences and affects those around him in a most positive way. On the day we met him, he made us all feel as if we had known him for years and as if we were a long treasured friend. Then as the years passed, it turned out exactly like that… we were his long treasured friends. Of course we treasured his friendship too.

He was a wonderful teacher and mentor. Over the years he was a championship quartetter and chorus member. He directed choruses and served in many chapter and district offices. He is a past Rocky Mountain District president and has represented RMD barbershoppers at the Society level in committee and ad-ministrative assignments. Jimmy was always willing to step for-ward when helping hands were needed. He was a generous man; a Founder and member of the Presidents’ Council of the Harmony Foundation. And, he was generous with his time and his talents in helping others.

I know many of you have long and close friendships and will be able to add to these brief and inadequate comments I have made here. I hope you will pay tribute to Jimmy by sharing your memories with us.

There was a viewing and pay respects to the family on Sun-day evening, November, 26, 2006, from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Wasatch Lawn Funeral Home, 3401 So. Highland Dr., Salt Lake City. The funeral was Monday November 27, 2006 with a 9:00 am viewing, followed by the 10:00 am funeral service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 6301 So. 2300 East, Salt Lake City.

Jimmy’s family requested that Senior Class Reunion, his last quartet, sing and that his barbershopper friends form a grand chorus for the funeral service. The Beehive Statesmen and Sal-taires combined to sing “I Believe” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Sincere condolences to the Wheeler family and a salute to the inimitable spirit of Jimmy Wheeler.

HE WILL BE MISSED!

Denver 2007 International Convention Volunteers Needed

2007 is here and in a few months thousands of barbershoppers will be in the RMD heading to Denver for the International Convention July 1-8. The Convention Steering Committee is in full stride planning the BEST CONVENTION EVER, and for that to happen MANY VOLUNTEERS will be needed in many areas of op-eration.

We have the MOST EFFICIENT system of volunteering...it only takes MINUTES to register on-line, and by indicating your preferred areas of service, preferred days and times, and even friends you want to work with, those who register first are most likely to get their requests fulfilled.

The logistics of assigning hundreds of volunteers to dozens of operations for a one week Convention is something we want to do with a BIG HEADSTART. By volunteering NOW, you (as a volunteer) get your requests fulfilled, and you give us (strategic planners) the flexibility to get the “workforce” estab-lished with time to spare.

Grab your mouse, go to www.RMDsing.org and click on “On-line Volunteer Form” at the bottom of the home page. Type in your personal data, click your preferences, your shirt size, and submit. It’s THAT EASY.

One additional incentive to register early...we’ll be SURE to have one of our snazzy Volunteer shirts IN YOUR SIZE ready for you to wear (and keep). Other-

wise, we’ll be guessing what sizes to order, and not only will you get the “leftover jobs” but you’ll also get to choose a shirt “from whatever sizes are left.” We want our Convention atten-dees to have the time of their lives...and we want the same for our highly-valued volunteers. Please, register now. Thanks. If you can’t volunteer on-line, call Tony at 303-233-6234 to vol-unteer by postal mail.

Director’s College is Coming!

The Society has changed its policy on scholarships for Director’s College. There will be 100 of them just as in years past but – they will go to those who have not at-tended Director’s College at any time. There will not be any for those of us who have attended before. I’m still

working budget issues to determine if we will have any district scholarships and if so, how many. I will let all the directors know as soon as I find out. Here’s what to do for a Society scholarship. Go to

http://www.barbershop.org/web/groups/public/documents/pages/pub_id_060750.hcsp#P-7_0

or open the Society web site, click on the Direct button on the navigation bar across the top of the screen.

The Scholarship information is the third bullet down the left hand side. Click that and follow the instructions. If you are planning on applying for a Society scholarship, get your application in NOW!

On another note, there are a few chapters that did not iden-tify their director on the Society officer listing. If your chapter does not have a director, please let me know so we can try to help the situation.

Good Things Happening In RMD

Happy New Year and welcome to 2007. Good things are coming to the RMD this year.

• 2007 is the Barbershop Harmony Society’s year of The Music Man, in celebration of the 50 year anniver-sary of that glorious musical play.

• Your fellow Rocky Moun-tain District barbershoppers in Albuquerque, New Mex-ico are in final preparation to host the Barbershop Har-mony Society’s Mid-Winter Convention Janu-ary 25-27. There’s an old time quartet competition, seniors competition, solid gold Saturday show, beauti-ful New Mexico scenery.

• One week later is Rocky Mountain Harmony College, Feb. 2-3, at Estes Park, Colorado. Once again this will be a great opportunity to join barbershop friends, ring a few chords, and bring some harmony to the world.

• The RMD Spring convention, April 27-28, will be in Ogden, Utah, at the Peerys Egyptian Theater. Plan on a great program there and the important quartet pre-liminary competition for entrance to the Denver con-vention in July.

• BHS International Convention — it's right here in our district in Denver, Colorado from July 1-7. I encour-age every RMD member to join the volunteer corps. Many hands make light work and just a few hours of your time during the week will give you great satisfac-tion and will mean so much to our guests. Sign up now. You’ll be amazed how much fun you have and how many new barbershopper friends you will make.

• RMD Fall convention in Albuquerque (Sept 28-29)

This will be a great year to invite someone to join. I prom-ise you they’ll thank you for it. I look forward to seeing you at one of these great events. Let’s sing a tag together!

Page 5: We shall meet but we shall miss him, there will be “One ...rmdsing.org/VocalExpressions/VocalExpressions_2007JanFeb.pdf10882 W. Indore Dr. Littleton, CO 720 981-1246 sgrig@aol.com

Sadly we note Jimmy Wheeler’s membership “In Memo-rium,” one of the great “givers” to Barbershop of all time. Jimmy was my “mentor” when I suddenly became District Presi-dent and Jimmy served as the RMD Harmony Foundation repre-sentative as Financial Development VP for one year before me (first year) while he was Immediate Past President (an office he held for numerous terms). Jimmy obviously loved Harmony Foundation, loved SPEBSQSA and BHS, and loved Youth Out-reach. He leaves the world a FAR better place than he found it, and he leaves it now “in our hands.”

Thanks to Harmony Foundation and the donors who make everything possible, we have thousands of young people experi-encing barbershop harmony at camps and festivals; we have a thriving Collegiate Quartet program (with top quartets touring colleges to ignite new programs); we have 100 chorus directors receiving scholarships to Director’s College, and we have a documentary in the making to advance public knowledge of our craft and our mission.

Harmony Foundation seeks the involvement of everyone, at whatever level of giving is possible for each individual. Every barbershopper should become an “Ambassador of Song,” which can simply be a $5.00 per month (18 cents per day) monthly bank draft or credit card charge. This minimum dona-tion sends a kid to Harmony Explosion Camp.

Harmony Foundation Makes Unparalleled Progress in 2006 Written by Dr. Tony Pranaitis, Financial Development VP

303-233-6234 — [email protected]

When you get your bank statement or your credit card state-ment, look at that $5.00 (or $10.00, or $50.00, or $84.00 if you’d like to join the President’s Council) as your investment in the future prosperity of Barbershop, and as your ownership of the programs making this possible. When you are a DONOR, you are an OWNER.

Make 2007 the year you become an OWNER of the pro-grams that will be your legacy, like Jimmy Wheeler. I chal-lenge each quartet in the RMD to set a goal for 2007 to raise the funds to become Ambassadors of Song (or, if you can raise the kind of money to become an “Ensemble of Excellence”…as is Saturday Evening Post…all members of the President’s Coun-cil). Wear your “Ambassador of Song” button proudly. Urge your fellow chapter members to join with you in preserving bar-bershop harmony. Parents of one of the students who attended Summer Harmony Camp 2006 in Estes Park are proud members of “Ambassadors of Song” because they believe in what we are providing, not only for their student, but for ALL of the students who attend our Camp and other Camps.

The Founder’s Club (of which Jimmy Wheeler was also a member) allows planned end-of-life giving (as they say, “you can’t take it with you”) which extends your legacy far beyond your lifetime, making it possible for future generations to reap the blessings of barbershop that have enriched your life. Clarke Caldwell can help YOU to establish financial vehicles that will reduce your estate tax burden and instead divert assets to those beneficiaries that YOU would seek to prosper.

I’m proud to state that I served on a sub-committee who’s task was to design “Donor Choice,” which allows you to direct up to 30% of your donation to Harmony Foundation specifically to a chapter or a district. Clarke Caldwell has called Harmony Foundation “the tide that lifts ALL of the boats.” We are excited by the volume of that “tide” and the number of “boats” that are being lifted…and we are excited by the future prospect of get-ting more (maybe everyone?) involved in the volume of that tide. Harmony Foundation has a vision, a dream, of 100 Har-mony Explosion Camps per year. It CAN happen, and WILL happen if each one of us takes ownership of this vision. Become a donor.

At the close of 2006, the President’s Council (minimum annual donation $1,000) was closing in on 400 mem-bers (over 380 in late December) and those donors had pledged OVER ½ MILLION DOLLARS ($530,000). Thanks to these men and women of vision and generosity, and thanks to the incredible hard work and leadership of Clarke Caldwell (CEO Harmony Foundation) and Ev Nau (Director of Harmony Foundation Major Gifts), the Foundation is gaining momentum toward a $1 million dollar annual budget (and WILL succeed through “The Power of Everyone”).

Below are the current President’s Council members in the Rocky Mountain District. Considering that we (the RMD) are about 1/27th of the entire Society membership, we are about 10% above the average for President’s Council members. Let’s keep setting the pace! If you agree that Harmony Foundation is a worthy institution to include in your charitable giving portfolio (as these men and women below do) please contact myself, or any member of the President’s Council about joining us in support of the FUTURE of barbershop harmony.

American mezzo-soprano Kathleen Clawson will present "Broadway Broads: A light-hearted look at the women of American musical theater" during the Ladies’ Breakfast Friday, Jan. 26, 8 a.m., in the Hyatt Regency Hotel Albuquerque.

In keeping with the 2007 celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Music Man, Clawson will sing and share anecdotes about musical theatre’s “broads” and “babes.” The breakfast event is part of the Society’s Midwinter Conven-tion in Albuquerque, N.M., Jan. 23-28.

Clawson has performed throughout the United States in opera, on the concert stage and recital platform in a wide range of reper-toire from Bach and Janacek to Verdi and Wag-ner. Shawn Mondragon Is PR putting in a bigger ad?

In lieu of a regular column, I would like to push the upcoming events in our District through the visual medium, that’s right, ads! Contrary to public opinion, this is NOT just for the benefit of our baritones. From time to time, I will have a how-to piece (thanks to PROBEmoter editor and RMD editor Steve Jackson) on PR and Marketing for the benefit of our chapter Marketing and PR officers.

Dr. Tony Pranaitis

Membership Starts With Me!

Most likely, your chapter recently honored one of your members as “Barbershopper of the Year” — a fine way to recognize someone who has given “above and beyond” to advance barbershop in your chapter and/or community. While the recipient is typically quite humbled by the recognition of his peers, you know who ought to be PROUD? The guy who brought him into barbershop. Just as your parents were the proudest people in the room at your gradua-tion, or your wedding, or other milestone, when those we nurture reach their potential, we celebrate.

It’s always more blessed to give than receive, and when you give of yourself to the benefit of others, the rewards from within are even greater than from those around you. But when it comes to decisions about what brings the most enjoyment in barbershop, who should you consider first? I believe the correct answer is “me.”

If I’m not enjoying barbershop, I have nothing to tell others about the great fun and fulfillment and friendship that barbershop offers. If I’m not enjoying barbershop, there is nothing “contagious” that others will see in my life without my saying a word. So, membership starts with “me.”

If you’re not having fun, then “fix it.” Chances are, there are others around you with the same problem. Make sure YOU are a happy member first. Then make sure that all the members around you are happy mem-bers. You know how the emergency instructions on an aircraft say “in the event the cabin loses air pressure, put YOUR mask on FIRST, then help those around you with their mask?” Same idea.

Membership STARTS with retention. If we want to keep the members that we already have, we need to keep them happy. Give everyone a task, make them an important contributor to your chapter family. Recog-nize the things that they do. Sing tags with everyone you can, even if they’re a “fifth wheel.” Shake their hand, give ‘em a smile, and say their name — “great to see ya, Joe” — which is the BEST reason for name badges.

When the family is functional and happy, then recruit-ment is natural. Assign every visitor a “buddy” who can be aware of his needs at all times. Call him to get feed-back on his “fun quotient” and invite him back. Practice thorough ORIENTATION so that a visitor can “see the big picture” and how his unique “piece” will fit into the “puzzle.” To all chapter Membership Chairmen/VP’s, your job is to MAKE SURE that all of this happens — do some of it, delegate some of it — and to make sure that everyone in the chapter is working with you toward a common goal. What are your chapter membership goals? Set them, communicate them, and measure your progress.

We hope to roll out an Email publication called “Members Monthly” — it will be sent to all RMD mem-bers, so make sure your E-mail address is correct on the Society website. It will contain some news summaries, and some membership motivation and ideas. Look for it soon.

Another Singing Winter in Estes Park?

Written by Dan Clark, Music and Performance VP

Harmony College, Rocky Mountain style, is only a month away! The beautiful YMCA of the Rockies, just outside Estes Park, as always, awaits your presence with a great weekend of barbershopping fun. Guest quartets who will be involved in coaching and other faculty functions are International Champs, Gotcha, and one of our most popular Seniors Champs, Antique Gold.

Quartets from all over the Dis-trict (and elsewhere) are invited to come join us for coaching sessions with these talented and experienced champion singers. Classes in vocal production, stage presence, music theory, arranging, and other aspects of our hobby are on tap, along with the fun of tag singing, Polecat Uni-versity sessions and a general good time.

A special new offering this year will be a coaching session for your entire chorus. This is to be awarded as a grand prize to the chorus which registers and brings the high-est percentage of its chapter mem-bers to the RMD Harmony College weekend. No extra coaching charges will be made, and your chorus will be coached by two of our International judges in music and presentation. It's a great oppor-tunity for your entire chorus to get a shot in the arm. Plan on lots of singing, lots of fun and fellowship, and fabulous scenery February 2nd-3rd. Register now!

The Cascading Benefit

For the roughly one third of RMD Chapters who participate in the voluntary CARA (Chapter Activities Recognition Award) program, there are a number of benefits. By using the CARA form to di-agnose their chapter’s success, relative to music, outreach and administrative activi-ties, the chapter board has a great tool for seeing what’s on track and for making course alignments as needed, on a monthly basis. The idea is not to “max out” the possible CARA points, but to step up for the legitimate accolades for things well done.

An additional benefit accrues to some of those chapters: winning the Plateau trophy. Competing with chapters of like-size, your organization has the potential to garner the plaque and peer recognition (presented at the spring House of Dele-gates meeting) as being the most healthy and vigorous chapter in your Plateau. Part of the presentation (the part I like the most) is the award of two COTS scholar-ships for each of the Plateau winners. Seven of the eight COTS scholarships were redeemed in 2006.

If a significant portion (defined as four or more) of your Chapter leadership team attends COTS, another benefit is awarded: the Tony. Named for Past RMD President Tony Pranaitis, the Tony is a scholarship to Rocky Mountain Harmony College, in Estes Park, Colorado. Nine Chapters quali-fied for Tonys in 2006: Bernalillo County, Billings, Denver Mile High, Grand County, Grand Junction (two), Denver Mountainaires, Rapid City, Salt Lake City (2) and Longmont.

I think the pattern is obvious, that ac-tivity begets activity, and it's a building phenomenon. So if your chapter isn't in the CARA program, urge your chapter Presi-dent to sign up. Contact me for a year’s supply of forms and guidance for their completion. I think you’ll enjoy the Cas-cading Benefit.

Here’s a blast from the past. While looking through some on-line bulletins, I ran across this in the Greater Phoenix Dec. 5 UPBEAT, weekly bulletin, edited by Phil Smith and David Melville. The Knudsen Brothers were origi-nally from Provo, Utah and competed In sev-eral RMD contests in the early ’80’s before they moved to Phoenix.

Events VP

Len Siler We’ve Got A Busy Year In Store for RMD

Happy New Year! This will be an exciting year with the world's focus on Denver and the Rocky Mountain District for the 2007 Denver Internationals. We have to put our best game face on and show the world what a wonderful city and district we live in. If you haven't attended an International, there should be no reason for you not to be in Denver the week of July fourth. Our district will be represented by our district champion, Sound of the Rockies, and by at least three quartets. They will be per-forming in our own back yard and we are all expecting a fantastic performance from all. The venue will be the Pepsi Center in Denver, an excellent venue for our convention. So don't wait any longer - go online at www.barbershop.org and get your registra-tion and make your reservations.

I am your new Events VP and my goal is to serve as good as

my predecessor, Kevin Pape. 2007 will bring a lot of activity within the RMD and we have to prepare ourselves for the best year yet. First we have the Rocky Mountain Harmony College being held at YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado on February 2 - 4. Two quartets are on staff this year, GOTCHA! and Antique Gold. Our VP of Music & Performance, Dr. Dan Clark, has a terrific weekend scheduled, one that you don't want to miss.

Registration forms for individuals, quartets and choruses are on the RMD web site, www.RMDsing.org. Early registration deadline is January 26, 2007. The 2007 Spring Convention and Quartet Prelims will be held in Ogden, Utah on April 27 - 29 at the Peery Egyptian Theatre. Also, it is possible for a quartet or chorus to enter the contest and only be judged for evaluation. This will result in no score being posted on the contest summary but the quartet or chorus will still be able to participate in the evaluation rotation. This is an excellent opportunity to get top-ranked evaluation and improve the quality of your performances.

The 2007 Fall Convention will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 28 - 30. The package of information with the letter requesting their chapter's intent to compete in the Cho-rus Contest will be given to all chapter presidents and directors shortly after the first of the year. The information requested in the letter is important and will assist in proper assignment of chorus rehearsal space. All rehearsal space will be matched to the size of each chorus and assigned accordingly. The response deadline for the 2007 Fall Convention is April 27, 2007. Although this is an early deadline, I'm confident that all choruses will know their in-tentions and are up to the challenge of successfully planning their competition goals for this year.

To give you enough information for future planning, I have

listed future convention dates and sites (both confirmed and an-ticipated).

One often asked question, and one that affects the budget for each event is:

Q. Do I have to stay within the hotel block?

A. No. You are free to stay where you wish. However, there are considerations you must be aware of.

1) If you want to take advantage of any tax savings, you must stay with your chorus;

2) All hotel rooms have been negotiated down to the lowest possible price. These prices often include the use of all re-hearsal and meeting rooms free of charge. If you stay in another hotel outside the room block, even if you think you are saving money on a per-room basis, this will decrease the number of blocked rooms used. If the number of blocked rooms decreases substantially, the hotel will charge the district for the use of the rehearsal rooms. This translates into a budget shortfall which could result in higher district dues to make up the shortage. The bottom line is try at all possible to stay within the room block. It will result in a financially stable budget for the district.

As you can see, this will be a very full and exciting year. Remember, these conventions are not limited to society and chapter members. Talk to your friends and family and have them join us for the very best in barbershop harmony. I'll see you all in Ogden this Spring.

Youth Outreach Activities

Barbershop Harmony Society Vision "...to be an ever-growing frater-nity of barbershop-style singers, leading the cause of encouraging vocal mu-sic in our schools and communities..."

We are committed to expose and train the younger generation in our truly American art form. To realize this vision, the DCC sponsors an annual Youth Harmony Camp. High school students from across the state participate in this fun-filled 4-day camp of a cappella harmony.

As musicians, we are involved in various community out-reach programs that benefit the music education of youth. Since 2004, the DCC has hosted ShowFest, an an-nual festival that highlights Albuquerque metro-area high school show choirs. In January 2005, in conjunction with the New Mexico Music Educators Association 61st All-State Music Festival and In-Service Conference and in co-operation with the other barbershop choruses in the Albu-querque area, the DCC sponsored a workshop in barber-shop harmony for choral teachers and the first All-State Barbershop Chorus for youth.

Editorial

Are You Missing The Boat? By Steven Jackson

Thirteen of our RMD chapters chose not to honor a Barbershopper of the Year for 2005. As a former Membership Vice President, I strongly believe that retention is just as important and critical as recruitment in a chapter’s membership growth. We need to keep the members we’ve got! A large part of retention is member rec-ognition. A pat on the back, a hearty handshake, and a broad smile works wonders for the morale of your chapter workers. Everyone should be appreciated and recognized for what they do, whether they are active now or not as much as they used to be.

Ask your missing members why they are inactive. It’s not always their health, their schedule or other interests that are the issue. Maybe they’re just not interested in contributing anymore because their efforts went largely unnoticed and/or ignored. It’s demoralizing to be unappreciated! Yup, there goes Fred out the door, muttering something about a bowling league. Sometimes, a mention in the bulletin or website can work wonders. Maybe your chapter president could acknowledge your contribution at the chapter meeting when he’s conducting the business meeting, “Hey guys, didn’t Bob do a super job getting the risers there and back for our Christmas concert? Whatta guy! And how about big Al helping to load and unload them? Thanks, Jim and Al!” Look at those guys beaming!

Then there are your super motivated members that are always busy doing something — that one guy that you secretly think should be cloned about ten times so that he can solve ALL your chapter concerns! Even if you have a smaller and less active chapter, there are still “the workers that go above and beyond the call of duty” to make your barbershopping experience the best it can be. Why not honor those men when appropriate?

It could be an officer, a committee chairman, the director, the coffee maker, the contact guy, the editor or webmaster, a avid quartet man, the guy who sets up and tears down the chairs every week, the guy that always bring your risers to your performances, etc. Getting the idea? Four little letters — BOTY — on a hand-some plaque or an attractive certificate of recognition have been known to bring grown men to their knees with tears in their eyes. It’s true, I’ve seen it happen.

If you don’t have an active committee (or a designated member) identified to han-dle the selection process, why not go to your chapter President and volunteer? Don’t know how to get started? How about asking a RMD leader (officer or VP) to point you in the right direction? Call me, I’ll be glad to help (I like telling people what to do — ask my fellow quartet mem-bers). Do you know who your chapter counselor is? Who is your chapter Barber-shopper of the Year for 2006 going to be?

Now for another pet peeve of mine. I sure hope that everyone is enjoying the new look of the VE. I know that I’m enjoying making it look more like a magazine and less like a chapter pub-lication. But — I’m concerned that our online issues of the VE

will not be printed off and distributed to those RMD members not on line. I don’t know what percentage of our membership is on-line but I suspect it might be at least 50-60 percent. That means 40 percent of our members are not reading this maga-zine. How can we correct this problem? Yeah, I said “WE!”

Who’s going to take the initiative to download and print off copies for his fellow chapter members? I know color printing can get costly. I can grayscale each issue before presenting to Woody to post on the website. That way, you could have your choice of issues. Sure, the color issues are pretty, but I’d rather do it in black and white if more members will read it. Well?

Jeff Kready debuts in New York

Jeff Kready is a grandson of Tumbleweed chorus director Don and Jo Kready of Colby.

Theater-goers who watched Jeff Kready grow up on Topeka’s stages will have to travel to New York to see the tal-ented actor, singer and dancer. Kready made his Broadway debut Thursday night (November 9, 2006) in a revival of “Les Miser-ables,” the third-longest running show behind “The Phantom Of The Opera” and “Cats.”

Broadway’s Broadhurst Theater is a long way from Topeka Civic Theatre’s old Warehouse on the Levee Theater in North Topeka where as an eight-year-old, Kready made his stage debut in the title role of the musical “Oliver!” Over the years, audi-ences saw and heard the 2000 Washburn Rural High School graduate and 2004 graduate of Washburn University develop as a performer in roles at TCT, Helen Hocker Theater and at Washburn. Kready also sang in the Washburn Singers and Choir, Topeka Festival Singers and the Capitol City (Barbershop) Cho-rus.

After finishing Washburn with a 4.0 grade-point average, Kready was plying his trade as an actor in regional theater, ap-pearing last spring in Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater in Lancaster, Penn. Since that is only a few hours from New York, Kready auditioned for a Broadway show on his day off, he said Friday by phone from his New York apartment. “I went to the audition because 1 had never been to a New York audition before, and, frankly, it intimi-dated me,” he said. “I just wanted to audition to have the experi-ence under my belt.”

He showed up at 6:30 a.m. to sign up for the 10 a.m. audi-tions for “Les Miserables,” but the first slots went to the mem-bers of the Actors’ Equity Association, the labor union for actors and stage managers.

Non-Equity actors auditioned hours later, but could sing only eight bars of their song. “I went in, and sang my eight bars,” said Kready, who selected “Flight,” a song by Craig Carnelia. The music director asked Kready to finish his song, “and that was kind of a victory in itself.” When he was called back for a second audition, they asked him to sing “Run, Freedom, Run!” from “Urinetown.” Then he performed “Soliloquy,” which is sung by Jean Valjean, “Les Miserables” main character. Kready was coached by John Napier, the Tony Award-winning produc-tion director of “Les Miz.” “He was in my face, coaching me through it. He was yelling at me, 'Give me more here! Give me more'" Kready said.

Kready didn’t realize he was being considered as an under-study for the lead role. “I’m so young,” the 24-year-old said. “I thought they were just trying to see what my range was.” Before he left New York, Kready sang for Cameron Mackintosh, the producer of “Les Miserables.” “It was an intense experience,” said Kready, who later received notice that he was cast as Babet and would understudy Jean Valjean for actor Alexander Gemignani. “To get to a Broadway show from an open call is said to be impossible,” Kready said. “It was like I won the lot-tery.” Previews of “Les Miserables” began October 2nd. Jeff’s mother and step-father were in the audience Thursday for open-ing night. His father, Rick Kready, and grandfather, Don Kready went to New York to see the show the following week-end, November 11-12, 2006.
