WE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF UNSOLICITED RESUMES We didn't place more than a handful of these people. The likelihood that someone who sent a resume to us who was a perfect fit for a job we were trying to fill at the time was unlikely. If you’re not a perfect match on skills and experiences, your resume is unlikely to even be read. There is a lot of technology that matches a person’s skills, experiences and job titles to what’s listed in the job posting. These resumes are automatically rank-ordered on a best fit basis. More important: recruiters spend no more than 10-15 seconds looking at a summary of each profile before deciding to read it. So even for those in the top of the stack, if the resume doesn’t stand out in some way, the person is unlikely to be considered. The big point is that you can’t rely on a lottery-like approach to job hunting by applying to as many jobs as possible with the hope you’ll be interviewed. Instead, you need to use a sophisticated marketing effort based on how recruiters find people to fill their open jobs. When it comes to your career, the worst thing you can do is mistake activity for progress and then complain about your lack of progress. - Lou Adler 2014 ================================================================================================================================= Remember you heard it here first as we keep showing you how to beat this system with our much heralded RULE # 4 and ONET Online. 336 EAST BASELINE RD, PHOENIX, AZ 85042 http://www.valleymetro.org/planning_your_trip Find the quickest way to this location. Make sure that you can get there and back. The distance you live away from this location will determine if they consider you. Store Managers say that you if live over 5 miles away from the

store, you should make every effort to go over (at non-busy hours in the AM/PM) to introduce yourself and explain why you selected their store. This is critical (even more so) if there are stores closer to your home. A very successful introduction for those over 10 miles away is: “Thought that I would stop in to introduce myself because I have applied for ___________ (position applied for) and wanted to let you know that I applied here because I have been planning to move into this area but, I have to have a good job to move. So, I was wondering if anyone would have a few moments to talk to me about this job and any upcoming opening.”

THE SWEETEST DEAL IN TOWN IS HERE! This is the sweetest deal in town. The job requires almost no experience but it requires patience and ability to keep on task. You are taking calls from people who have just bought an regridgerator, a washing machine or a related product from a Sears Store. At the front end of the conversation you are evil, a villian or worse a crook

for selling them that no good washer. You work them through a series of questions and if you can’t solve their problem, you schedule a service tech to repair or replace the item. At the end of this conversation they believe you are the nicest, the sweetest person in the world because you are fixing their problem. Over simplied? Not really, that’s what you do! The number reason (I am told by Sears) that a new appliance doesn’t work is that it is not plugged in or there is no power at the plug. Here is the sweet part of the deal, for every time you fix the problem without scheduling a service tech, you make a $5 bonus. If this is the number reason why people are calling, how many bonuses will you make on top of your $12 Base?

It all comes down to how you showcase and frame the subject when it comes up! =============================================================== IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES AT SEARS CUSTOMER CARE NETWORK'S HOME SERVICES INBOUND CALL CENTER You will be part of a team, have a chance to grow your skills and perform every day in a fun and fast paced environment where you will know that what you do will directly impact our success. TIPSTER: DO THE APPLICATION WRONG AND YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT 6-8 WEEKS TO REAPPLY! Here is a classic case where Rule # 4 would be the diference in putting together an application and for it to have a serious impact upon whether or not the company’s computer and recruiters would select you. Otherwise…GOOD LUCK! Hope your killer resume helps you! OH, WAIT! If your application is not selected by the computer, then, no one will see your killer resume. You cut-n-pasted your killer resume into the application. OH WAIT! Did you have all of the key words and phrases in the proper order on your resume? Better luck next time…you’ll have to wait 6-8 weeks to replace what you just uploaded…SORRY!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you do not know what Rule # 4 is then, campers you are in a bit-of-a-pickle aren’t ya? USED JOB SHACK INSIDER…SEARS CALL CENTER CALL CENTER REPRESENTATIVE - I applied online and the process took 3 days Interview Details – I applied online, did the assessment, and within the next two days I was called for a phone screen. Basic questions about past experiences and customer services examples. Set up an interview for the next week. The interview was fairly easy. Same basic questions. They also have you act out a little just to see if you could be sympathetic. Got offered a position the same day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL CENTER REPRESENTATIVE - I applied online and the process took 1+ week Interview Details – Did one phone interview. Also had to take multiple tests on a computer which took 2 hours. Then I interviewed with 2 managers. The questions they ask where very different from any normal interview. They also do role playing in the interview. The manager also said I would be hired at full time 32 but could work more which is only true for 4 weeks during Christmas. I was also told there is room to grow which is true but don’t expect a Pay raise for learning new skills Interview Question – Tell me how you achieved a goal. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL CENTER REPRESENTATIVE - I applied online and the process took a day Interview Details – had to listen to calls for about 30 minutes or so. I think they actually forgot to come get me but after working there it wouldn't surprise me at all. Then I interviewed with two managers and had to do some role playing. Interview was easy for me. No unusual questions and nothing unexpected. INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: GREATEST STRENGTHS - GREATEST WEAKNESS --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Page 16: WE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF UNSOLICITED RESUMES

Top 7 SEARS interview questions • Why do you want to work for Sears? • What do you know about Sears? • What are your career goals? • What are your biggest strengths? • How long would you expect to work for Sears if hired? • Do you know anyone who works for Sears? • Why should Sears hire you?

For one, the interview questions “give us reasons to hire you”, “why should we employ you” or “what can you bring to our company” is something that differentiates the best candidates from the other good candidates. ================================================================

APPLY TO EACH STORE INDIVIDUALLY – THAT ARE WITHIN 5-10 MILES OF WHERE YOU LIVE TO HAVE THE “ADVANTAGE OF LIVING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.”

TIPSTER: Apply to stores that are closest to where you live. This will allow you to take advantage of living within the neighborhood. Use this technique (below) with stores where the manager's name is posted. Normally, we would tell you to NOT call but, go in person as this is the best way to introduce yourself and to show the manager that you are serious about working for them. McDonald's is different. Managers might manage multiple stores and if you just go, they might not be there.

HERE IS THE MCDONALD'S DRILL: A. Apply online to the store. Do the application correctly (ala Rule Number Four) and complete. B. Call over to the store between 2-4 PM ONLY. C. Whoever answers the phone usually gives you their name, right? Start talking to them like you know them and then ask for their boss by his/her first name. SAMPLE: "Hey, Joe...are you guys swamped...man, we are over here...Hey, is Pedro in? Can I talk to him real quick?" There is a complicate psychological explanation as to why this works but, it does. D. You are on the phone with Pedro. Change gears by saying " Mr. Trujillo, I know you are very busy but, I just completed your online application and I was wondering if you could (please) pull my application (and without pausing or taking a breath…this is critical to making this work) when can I come see you about the position? E. Agree to the time that Pedro gives you and be there 10 minutes early. Please don't say, no I can't come now...otherwise...this call was in vain.

FROM THE APPLICATION… . During the past 5 years, have you ever been convicted of, pled guilty to or pled no contest to, a crime, excluding misdemeanors and traffic violations?

Answering yes will not necessarily bar you from employment. Applicants are not required to disclose sealed or expunged conviction records or the existence of such records. These include, for example, youthful offender records or conviction records that have been sealed or expunged by a court order. ===================== IMPORTANT VIDEO: http://www.mcstate.com/careers/videos/ =====================

The interview took about 5 minutes and was easy for being my first job, for a different employer. She asked me the general questions like,

• Where do you see yourself in 5 years? • What could you offer us?

Page 21: WE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF UNSOLICITED RESUMES

Then she asked me to tell a bit about myself, not work related, just in general. I told her I like to read and she asked me what kind of books, being the book worm I am it was difficult telling her which ones I really like so I gave her a broad genre. I believe asking me questions like that made it easier to relax and let the answers flow more naturally. Interview Question –

• What could you offer us? ============================================ Crew Member - I applied in-person and the process took a day Interview Details – I filled out a paper application, talked with the hiring manager, and was hired the same day. The interviewer asked a few questions about my personal situation, and then said I was hired. I reported in two days later to begin computer-based training, and worked

my first shift two days after that. Interview Question –

• Are you sure you want to work here, with all this experience in desk jobs? This is not, sometimes dirty work, standing for the full shift. {KILLER RESUME BIT THIS GUY! I BETCHA, HE WORE A SUIT?} ========================

* OK CAMPERS! Here is the key... They explained to you who they are going to hire. Your mission (if you want to get hired) is to show them that you do have this kind of experience. Employers will tell you to be direct. From a clerk, they do not want to read how good of a clerk you were. They want to know that you dropped off or picked paperwork, pickup up office supplies, ran errands and/or anything else that related to what they are looking for. Nowhere did they ask you how many times per day (per week) that you did it but, that you did (that is less important than you did). Anything else other than this conversation is wasted breath on them. If you know the city and/or can use a GPS System is a big plus that you should work into your job description(s). There you go! From zero experience to maybe over qualified on one paragraph…CAREER WHIPLASH!!! ============================================================================

RULE # FOUR REVISITED We are revisiting this to show new readers how this process works and to help anyone wanting to work for the largest security agency in the world…that is not government based. WITH MANY LARGE COMPANIES…it is important that you know that for the first two levels of review, a real person does not see your application because the company’s computer system scans your application. The computer is a very bright 6 year old…very smart but, not a lick of logic. Getting selected for an interview is very difficult when the company screens your application with the computer and you do not have the cheat sheet (full job description). OK…YEA! We are talking (in general) about positions that require little or no experience…“So why make this so difficult?” “Why should I be worried?” The reason you should be concerned is that you are about to make a mistake that will cost you the chance to get hired eight out of ten times in this new job market. You have just made a bad technical error by assuming that you know better and that since experience is only preferred then “what difference does it make if you read the job description or if you cut-n-paste the job description from your killer resume?”

You are getting ready to make the tragic mistake of confusing experience with skills and abilities. You are correct that the positions may not require experience but they do (many times) require a lot of skills. And if you really want to get hired, you must demonstrate to the employer that you do have the skills! (See the job below): “Previous experience preferred but not required…”

"Integrity, Vigilance, and Helpfulness", represented by the three dots on our logo, are qualities our employees are proud to demonstrate daily.

Page 29: WE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF UNSOLICITED RESUMES

TIPSTER #1: They do train but, they do give first preference to those who already have an AZ DPS SECURITY GUARD CARD and those with previous Law Enforcement or Military work histories are highly sought. “Does this mean that I have to have this to get a job?” No, but, it is the reality that if you already have a current guard card you can go through their internal training and be out on a security post a lot soon. Also, previous law enforcement or military experience takes everything to higher level of pre-training, qualifications and abilities to fill in at high profile security location(s). IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY HAVE A GUARD CARD DO NOT GO OUT AND GET ONE ON YOUR OWN. It really doesn’t work that way, it is expensive and you will still need to have the 8 hours of training ($40-100 cost…$40 is for bare bones training only and everything else is extra and done by you or the $100 is a full turnkey they do everything for you) by whoever hires you. SECURITAS TRAINS FOR FREE AND YOU ONLY PAY $72 FOR PROCESSING YOUR GUARD CARD THROUGH AZDPS. Before you start the process determine if you will qualify through AZDPS to receive a guard card. REMEMBER ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE! Go to http://licensing.azdps.gov/Licensedisqualifiers.asp TIPSTER #2: Let’s face it; Securitas is the largest private security agency in the world and because of that, their standards are higher than Uncle Bob’s Used Security Shack. They are security for some of the biggest companies here in the Phoenix Metro Area and they need people who bring their “A” Game daily. So, truly, they only take the best potential.

BUT, SOMETIMES, THE BEST IS NOT THE MOST EXPERIENCED BUT THE MOST MOTIVATED! If you are a security guard want-to-be with little no actual security experience, walking through the door to this open house and present yourself with less than a driven “I want this job and here is why I would be a GREAT Candidate…” which means being on your best “A” Game, if you are not spruced up and looking sharp and/or are not interested in the company (you didn’t know anything about them or their history) and/or you have the attitude that “I don’t really want the job but, I might take this until something better comes along;” PLEASE STAY HOME

Page 30: WE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF UNSOLICITED RESUMES

because you are not who they are looking for and you would just get your feeling hurt over wasting your time.

TIPSTER # 3: If you are a regular reader of the Used Job Shack then you are (by know) familiar with the new generation JOB SEEKING RULE #4. Then you already know what you need to get the full job descriptions…read it completely, several times…tear it apart…pull out all of the required skills/abilities and then, go through each of your jobs and match up what they need and what you have done… that’s only if you really want this job…Now fill out the application. For the sake of those who are NOT…here is a quick review.

SKILLS ARE HIGHLIGHTED…SEE IF YOU SEE A PATTERN?

--------------------------------------------------

ANALYSIS: This job requires a lot of skill or ability to observe, report, ability to create documentation and to follow instructions. On the surface you may not see the relationship between what you did and what this job requires. Here is where you confuse experience with skill. You are bringing this to the conversation not the employer. Please show me where the job requires ___ years of experience observing, reporting or preserving order. It does not. So, (by you confusing this issue) you would be presenting yourself as unskilled and lacking in any or all of the 18+ skills and abilities that the employer needed because you confused experience with skills.

Page 33: WE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF UNSOLICITED RESUMES

Re-read the job description and tell me if this employer is asking for experience or is looking for 18+ skills. If you are focused upon experience or that you believe that no experience is required “so I qualify automatically!” Or worse, “”that’s too much work and effort for this job…” Unless you explain to the employer that you do have the skills, how would they know? How would the computer know that as (say) a CASHIER, that you used the majority of those 18 skills on a daily basis? Did you or do you know that? Whatever you put on your application or in your resume become the only truth and information the employer will judge you by.

STILL CONFUSED…I SEE? Let’s break this down further so you really understand this as this is the most critical part of the application process and where 8 out of 10 people lose their chance to get interviewed, talk to a live person and get hired. Let’s examine the various duties and see how they were a part of your everyday work life. Let’s start with (say) a CASHIER who has never been a security card but, he has 3-5 years of experience working in a retail store.

HERE IS THE CUT-N-PASTED JOB DESCRIPTION FROM HIS RESUME: 2009 – Present CASHIER, BIG BOX WALLYCO – Phoenix, AZ “Worked as a retail cashier operating a POS Electronic Cash Register, handled money and processed payments. Answered customer questions, did price checks and kept the register clean. Counted and balance cash door at end of shift. Sometimes opened or closed store and helped

with related paperwork.” OK! This is actually better than many of you have as a job description. But, does it show the employer that he has the NEEDED skills to be a security guard? How many of the 18+ skills did he list in her job details? If you were a computer screening for 18+ skills did you find any? So, would he qualify? Thought so!

Page 34: WE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF UNSOLICITED RESUMES

Only if the employer was his cousin and already knew that about his actual cashiering experience and could see how all of the 18+ skills were incorporated into his job because cashiering is a passive form of security.

HERE IS THE SAME RESUME

USING THE “USED JOB SHACK METHOD”:

Same person, same experience and skills but actual written from the understanding that the employer did not/does not understand the actual duties of a cashier. 2009 – Present CASHIER, BIG BOX WALLYCO – Phoenix, AZ “Working at the store’s front register, I was required to observe and report suspicious activities and incidents to my manager and if there was an incident, I was required to write a complete report, submit documentation or fill out required corporate, police or for insurance forms in the case of loss or damage. Provided for the security and safety of client property by checking for irregularities – inspected items, examined items being purchased to ensure that the price codes had not been switched or altered. Was required to preserve order and successfully deal with disruptive, angry or customers who might be impaired by drugs or alcohol and to provide for the security and safety of client (store’s) property while - providing for the security and safety of the store’s personnel. Controlled access to control merchandize that was either expensive or age restricted behind locked cabinets to prevent snatch-n-grab thieves. When not on the register, patrolled assigned site location within the store to inspect merchandise, practiced passive shop lifting prevention methodologies, checked and reported to the manager or the maintenance staff any unsafe conditions from improperly stacked merchandise, mechanical or equipment problems and/or hazards of wet floors to exposed wiring. Responded to incidents of broken, spilled merchandise or customer related emergencies (which required documentation of the event and reports to be written). Stocked, removed merchandise from assigned area (and the front-end of the store if on register) and restocked a wide range of merchandize that (many times) required the lifting and/or moving of merchandise up to 25+ pounds.

Page 35: WE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF UNSOLICITED RESUMES

Operating the store’s cash register (a POS Computer register) required excellent reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling to retrieve dropped merchandise or funds. Always operated the register required that the register be concisely checked, monitored and observed for any mechanical problems. Whenever there was a transaction with checks or credit cards it was vital that a check be made to insure that the purchaser(s) were authorized person(s) to use the credit card or verify that the card was not stolen…” Does it show the employer that she has the NEEDED skills to be a security guard? How many of the 18+ skills did she list in her job details? If you were a computer screening for 18+ skills did you find any? So, would she qualify? Thought so!

INSIDER JOB SHACK…SECURITAS! SECURITY OFFICER INTERVIEW - I APPLIED ONLINE AND THE PROCESS TOOK 2 WEEKS Interview Details – Okay so I applied online and got a call after a couple days later asking me to come in for an interview. I went in signed in at the front desk and the receptionist gave me a packet to fill out paperwork and an indecent report. I turned that in and waited for my interview. They asked simple questions about my history and me. Was told I would get a call if my background check cleared. Got a call to come into a class (not paid) it was two days four hours a day. Basically a class about the company. Went into orientation the next Monday and then was given the site I would be working at. Interview Question –

• WAS THE SITUATION REPORT YOU WRITE WHEN YOU FIRST COME IN. =============================================================

SECURIY OFFICER INTERVIEW - I APPLIED ONLINE Interview Details – They made you take a test over Securitas.com where you answer question like.

• WOULD YOU TAKE A PURSE THAT WAS FOUND OR WOULD YOU TURN IT IN? • WOULD YOU TURN IN YOUR BOSS FOR BEING DRUNK ON THE JOB?

Stuff like that. As long as you are not a felon and can pass a background check and you are willing to work for a low wage you are in. They also give you a drug test which is the kind that they swab the inside of your mouth with cotton. If they can use you they normally will but if they don't have a spot for you, you might wait weeks to start work. ============================================================== SECURITY OFFICER INTERVIEW - I APPLIED ONLINE AND THE PROCESS TOOK 2 WEEKS Interview Details – I applied for Securitas because my dad said that they're the security company that works at Intel and that he'd been talking to one of the guards who said they're hiring like crazy. He told me to go in and gave me the guard's name. They didn't call me back for 2 weeks when I applied online. They finally did call me for an interview and I just had it this morning. When I showed up, the office was filled with people waiting for their interview too. They had CNN playing on the TV in the waiting room. The receptionist made me sign in and I was given my application pack, which included everything I filled out online, and a mock incident report, which during the interview they didn't even tell me if I did right or not because I've never worked security before. There was one guy in the waiting room dressed in business casual, a woman in a long sleeve Quicksilver tee and sweatpants, and a couple, and also a father and son applying on the computer. My interview was supposed to be at 11:30 but since everybody arrived before me, I sat and watched as they pulled everybody back for their interview. Within 2 minutes, they were on their way again. I soon found out why as I was pulled back. I was expecting to get these hard hitting questions, something worth a challenge but it was yet more paperwork. The interviewer just asked all these questions off of a packet, "Do you have a valid license?", "What's your driving record like?", "Would you be able to work overtime and holidays?" That was it. Then I was sent on my way while she said she would have to review my application with the other interviewer and would let me know. Interview Question –

• WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A SECURITY OFFICER? ===============================================================
