4-H Citizenship... will soon launch in California, joining 4-H SET and 4-H Healthy Living as the third of the 4-H National Mission Mandates. For a century 4-H has engaged youth in citizenship

through service learning, decision making, communication, teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. The 4-H Citizenship Initiative will refocus interest and attention to the

important and powerful contributions youth make in their communities everyday!

Over the coming months watch for exciting new opportunities for youth to engage and rally their communities in support of active citizenship. Also check out citizenship activities on the

state 4-H website at http://www.ca4h.org/Projects/Citizenship/ and opportunities to participate in the 4-H CAL-Focus Conference, recently awarded the National 4-H Award

of Distinction.

Goals of the 4-H Citizenship Initiative are to help youth to:

1. CONNECT –Be active partners in a larger community as they recognize, appreciate and respect human diversity and commonality; understand their part in shaping change and work together towards the common good.

2. LEARN- Learn from others, self and environment to develop informed perspectives, empathy, ethics, pro- social values, positive self identity and sense of social responsibility.

3. ENGAGE-- Engage in political education and awareness, social justice, advocacy, negotiation, public problem solving, community service, etc.

4. LEAD-- Develop leadership skills where youth use their voices, work, ideas or behavior for the greater good.

5. IMPACT—Make a difference in community, country and world.

simulations with speakers, tours, fun activities, and new friends from across

California.

Each year, California Focus emphasizes a current topic and weaves that theme into

many of the simulations and hands-on activities. In 2011, the topic will be social

media and learning more about this current communication tool - how to use it effectively and safely, how to best utilize its power in a

democracy.

During this 5-day simulation, delegates will fill essential positions in their own government of Sierra Cascade and visit with elected officials

and appointed staff from the legislative, executive, the judicial branches of

government. Be a part of this legislative conference and see how SET is integral to every aspect of life, even in government!

What is an All Star 4-H Ambassador?Sponsored by each county 4-H office and/or county 4-H leaders' council, all counties

in California have a County 4-H All Star or County 4-H Ambassador program for older

youth. Since both names refer to the same position, the phrase "All Star 4-H

Ambassador" shall be used as the statewide term to refer to both. All Star 4-H

Ambassadors act as liaisons between the county 4-H office, 4-H members and

to other organizations within the community; and attends and participates in the 4-H

State Leadership Conference, 4-H county, sectional, and statewide meetings, and other

activities as outlined by each individual county. All Star 4-H Ambassadors act as

visible 4-H members - role models for their fellow 4-H members, their county, and their community.

A Santa Barbara County 4-H All Star is the highest achievement that only a few 4-H Members will obtain. An All-Star has shown and continues to display the following criteria:
