5*A X is a testing environment that isolates untested code changes and/of software development including Web development and revision control.

The Google X Effect is a theory used to explain why newly-registered domains or domains with frequent ownership changes rank poorly in Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). In other words new websites are put into a “ X ” or a holding area and have their search ratings on hold until they can prove worthy of ranking.

You might have encountered it on Wikipedia where every user is given his/her X for testing purposes.

6In 1968, scientist Spencer Silver at 3M company created a very weak adhesive that would peel off when removed from any surface. The funny thing was that he was in fact trying to create a super strong adhesive. No one thought there was any use for such a product until another scientist, Art Fry, realized that the little pieces of paper made great book marks for his church songs without leaving residue on the page. Which famous invention am I talking about?

7*X was a shock site which presented uncensored news coverage and multimedia material based for the most part on war, accidents and executions.

Much of the material depicted was graphic, uncensored, gory videos and images. The content was depicted as a means to challenge the viewer, with its catch line being "can you handle life?", but later changed to "uncover reality" after the site received a major design overhaul with aims of becoming more open to the general public and become a respected "alternative news service".

Since the beginning of November 2006, X redirects to Y which was registered in October 2006, featuring mostly user submitted videos and allowing the embedding of media on other sites.

14The material used to make X is an alloy of 2 rare Earth elements. The estimated cost of the most advanced version of X is a few hundred million dollars.

Some of the many “unbelievable” features of X are the User Interface and the computer providing offline support to the person using X, and the manner in which the energy from the power source is converted to a stabilized electricity supply to allow the various components of X to function in the less than ideal situation in which an X may be used. 15In 2007, pharmacies across New Zealand began dispensing a new formulation of Eltroxin - a thyroid hormone replacement. Initial reports of side effects of the drug, included eye pain, itching, and nausea. In the 18 months following the release of the new tablet, the rate of adverse event reporting rose nearly 2,000-fold.

The strange thing was, the active ingredient in the drug was exactly the same. Laboratory testing proved that the new formulation was equivalent to the old one. The only change was that the drug-maker had altered the tablets’ size, color, and markings. What is the scientific phenomenon associated with the reason for why people were getting sick?

Page 20: We Quiz - Tech Quiz

16The reason for this is attributed to the perfectionist characteristic of Jobs. When Steve Jobs orchestrated the launch event of iPhone during Macworld 2007, it was a presentation on stage carried out by Jobs for more than an hour. During such keynote he starts with some introductory slides, company sales- report and in the middle of keynote, generally launches a new product with ads on the big screen on stage.

He wanted all the things to be in sync as per his calculations thus he asked his design team to tweak every minute detail in order to match his plan, this led to a common practice which can even be seen in latest product release. What practice ?

19*X was first created in 1976 by Phil Foglio. Developer Mike O'Brien, who was working as a bonded locksmith at the time, opened a wall safe in Foglio's Chicago apartment after a roommate had "split town" without leaving the combination.

In return, Foglio agreed to create it for O'Brien, who gave him some Polaroid snaps of a PDP-11 system running UNIX along with some notions about visual puns having to do with pipes, demons/daemons, forks, a "bit bucket" named /dev/null and so on. Foglio's creation showed four happy little red daemon characters carrying tridents and climbing about on (or falling off of) water pipes in front of a caricature of a PDP-11 and was used for the first national UNIX meeting in the US (which was held in Urbana, Illinois)

1This product announced on April 1 did not sound plausible as at that time its competitors offered less than 1/250th as much. That led many reasonably savvy folks to assume it was a hoax, especially since the announcement had an odd, jokey feel to it, and the service was allegedly rolling out to a “a handful” of people.

It however was real and the roll out to select people only was a result of the inadequate resources the company had and were forced to use 300 old Pentium computers that nobody wanted in the company.

4The company was founded by Nick Woodman in 2002.

Woodman started the company following a 2002 surf trip to Australia in which he was hoping to capture quality action photos of his surfing, but could not because amateur photographers could not get close enough, or obtain quality equipment at reasonable prices.

His desire for a camera system that could capture the professional angles inspired its name.

1The name "X" is derived from a French rendering of the Native American word shikaakwa, translated by some sources as "wild leek" or "wild onion" or "wild garlic", from the Miami-Illinois language. Henri Joutel, in his journal of 1688, noted that the wild garlic, called "Xua", grew abundantly in the area. Other sources say place of the skunk.

During the mid-18th century, the area was inhabited by a Native American tribe known as the Potawatomi, who had taken the place of the Miami and Sauk and Fox peoples.
