WE PUBLISH LOCAL AND WORLD’S LATEST HAPPENINGS VOL. XXXIII LEADING JAPANESE DAILY ON ISLAND OF HAW A n HILO, HAWAII, T. H., SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1941 NO. 8890 Bells Toll. In Thailand In Celebration LEGISLATIVE SIDELIGHTS Senator Chas. H. Silva is one of those lawmakers who sticks pretty close to the line when it comes to “shooting in” measures he promised that he would intro- duce before the legislative ses- sion. «ust before he took the boat for Honolulu, he promised those that talked to him that he intended to legislate against dual position holders. Now he comes forward wi£h SB-147 which should go a long way. . . if not absolute- ly all the way. . . in clarifying the status of county employees who have been in the habit of serving the territory during legislature time, come back and enjoy sitting on their jobs in the county, then again run for some kind of public office. This merry-go-round is go - ing £0 be stopped hi toto if the Silva measure becomes law. I t ’ll be interesting to watch just how this piece of legislation is going to suit a few of the house members attending the 21st session. * * * Funny isn’t it when you see the so-called giant of the newspaper world in this here parts advocate local patronage, more local gov- ernment, etc., etc. . . everything local if you please. . . and on the question of police commission a- lone champion the ,idea of letting a portion of the forty-five (for the commission won’t have unanimous approval by a long shot) members of the legislature mandate the creation of a commission to run the police and of law enforcement on the Big Island No wonder, Se- nator “Honest” Abe barks back at these papers who are panning him, “Where’s their consistency?” Let- ting a mere forty members fight over the commission measure and heeding the voice of some 15-16,000 citizens looks like two horses of different color. Let’s at least try and'do what we preach. We can’t be sincere and honest with others unless we begin by being honest and sincere with ourselves, you (Continued on Page Four) LEGISLATURE TO ENACT NEW SECURITY LAS THREE QUARTER MILLION WILL BE SAVED IN EM- PLOYEES’ TAXES Local Boy Stows awa} On Wednesday's Boas Arrested in Honolulu for stow- ing away on Wedneday’s Huala- lai was Joseph De La Cruz, 18, of Hilo. After the arrest De La Cruz ad- mitted that he had borrowed his friend’s ticket when boarding the steamer and had returned it there- after. He will be turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. TERRORISTS IN PASSING B U S' BELIEVED ANTI - JAPANESE GROUP IN PAY OF CHUNGKING In an attempt t° make the unemployment insurance legisla- tion in the territory conform with that of the federal govern- ment, a bill was introduced last Thursday in the House under the joint sponsorship of eight mem- bers, Reps. George M. Eguchi, W alter J. Macfarlane, James O’- Dowda, Henry C. Akina, J. How- ard Worrall, Kam Tai Lee, W aiter H. Dillingham, all of Oahu, and A. Q. Marcallino of aKuai. Longest Bill If enacted into law, the measure, one of the longest bills to be intro- duced in the current legislature, is expected to save the tax-paying employers some $750,000 per an- num. The same bill is now being draft- ed for introduction in the Senate by Sen. Francis K. Sylva, chair- man of the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Proponents of the measure point out that the passage of this bill by the legisla- ture would avoid the present con- fusion and conflicts resulting from attempts now being made to make the territory’s present law com- ply with amendments recently made by Congress. E D I T O R IA L SELF SUSTENANCE FOR HAWAII The University of Hawaii Extension Division in a very recent bulletin advises that as the result of repeated requests issued by the division to farmers of the territory, the local producion of food supply is being stepped up to meet the in- creasing demands mainly for the city of Honolulu. With peo- ple congregating in Honolulu from both the mainland United States and from all parts of the territory due to dispropor- tionate increases in the construction of national defense pro- jects, resulting in the increase of purchasing power from high wages being paid the workers followed by increased de- mands for fresh vegetables and other food products, with little regard for small differences in price, farmers of the territory are in an unusually good position to reap profits from their endeavors. According to the bulletin issued by the Extension Serv- ice, more than 1,100,000 pounds of head cabbage will be pro- duced for this month; green corn will be shipped mainly from the Island of Molokai from some 490 acres, an increase of more than 500% over the previous month; 180 acres of wat- ermellons are being planted this month, another increase of some 54% over February; 388 acres of winter potatoes will be produced within the next two months, and the output of tomatoes will be increased approximately 29% over this time last year. During the last several years in particular, the Univer- sity of Hawaii Extension Service has constantly advocated home production of vegetables in line with their program of making this territory self-sustaining to a large extent, and if the present rate of increase keeps up for the next few years, the Territory of Hawaii will be well on itsway toward this enviable goal. It is an accepted fact that behind the actual firing lines of warfare, the farmers of the nation make up its first line of home defense. The farmers of the territory, with the sys- tematic and scientific assistance and direction of the Univer- sity of Hawaii Extension Service are in a very fine position to do their part in national defense work by increasing the local supply of food products, mainly fresh vegetables, and simul- taneously reap their just profits while engaged in an indis- pensable industry at a time when every group is expected to keep this country from being dependent on other nations a- long all fronts. Diversified, small but systematic and scientific farming seems to have at last come to the fore, and with future pros- pects brighter than ever before, both the U. H. Extension Service and the independent farmers of the Hawaiian Islands are at last on their way toward their ultimate goal making Hawaii self-supporting to a large extent. Simultaneously, Na- kano announced the revival of “To- ho-kai” (Eastern Society) as a po - litical association devoted to the “enhancement of pure Japanese spirit.” Nakano who has been an active nationalist in a manifesto de- nounced the striping of “political character” from the National Ser- vice Association. “Although political parties have been dissolved, remnants are still engaged in activities retaining their past character, while some of their “members are engaged in deep and mysterious plots,” Naka- no declared. “Some even dare to run counter to immutable policies which have been decided upon by the issue of Imperial rescript,” the manifesto stated, announcing Nakano’s intention to serve the na- tion by “developing political lead- ership which will march ahead of the government.” MILITARY PACT " BETWEEN 0 1 MEXICO SEEN MEXICAN MINISTER IN U. SOFIA, Mar. 7 Nazi troops, which were reported to bemassed along the Greek-Turkey frontiers, may launch an a ttack from Bulgaria on eastern Macedonia and Thrace within two days, neutral military observers predicted, while diplomatic circles are watching the attitude of Yugoslavia and Turkey.

It was reported tha t Britain was rushing all spare equipment to Turkey while Greek diplomatic circles said they believed th a t Turkey would launch a drive into the Rhodope Mountains in case of any Nasi offensive. Well-informed circles said th a t the Greek army was prepared to fight any Nazi invasion and th a t General Alexander Papagos intended to make a stand along the Strum a River. These quarters claimed tha t it appeared likely th a t Papagos was expected to abandon Thrace as it is undefensible.

Camel Mourns For Bell Till Copy Is Made

■ spected Jap an ese sh rines, tem ples,

COLORADO SPRINGS, Col— Ethel, 42-year-old camel, contentedly chewed her cud today and listened to the tinkle of the bell around her neck for she believed it was a genuine Tibetan bell.

For 20 years Ethel who resides in a zoo wore a bell which camels had carried for centuries, over the Khyber pass between Tibet and India. The blessings of Tibetan lamas were scrolled upon it.

The bell, which was given Ethel when it arrived in this country, never left her neck except when a strap was changed.

Early last fall E thel’s consort, 14-year-old Fritz, grabbed the bell between his teeth and broke it.

Ethel refused to eat. She would not sleep. She didn’t go near Fritz.

A bell-maker tried to duplicate the bell.I t didn’t sound ju s t right to Ethel and she would have

nothing to do with it. A second attem pt also was unsuccessful.

Finally, afte r hours of patient labor, the bell-maker produced a bell with the exact tone of the Tibetan instrument. All it lacked was the engraved blessings of the lamas—but Ethel couldn’t tell the difference.

Ethel today ate, slept, and frolicked with Fritz as the bell jingled about the zoo grounds.
