April 22 is the Earth Day. People all over the world think about our planet. They think about air, water, plants and animals. They say our planet is in danger. Many people don’t know how to keep the waters clean and the air fresh. But they are ready to do it.

Animals in danger Many animals and birds on the Earth are disappearing nowadays. Many of them are in danger. Indian tigers and African elephants are among them. People have hunted and killed many tigers in India and a lot of elephants in Africa. Now you can find their names in the Red Book. People must take special care of them.

The huge forests help to control the world’s weather, and to produce much of the oxygen in the air.

There are many illnesses that we still can’t cure. There are old ones like cancer and new ones like AIDS. It may be that the medicines we need will be discovered in wild plants in savannas, deserts or rainforests. If we destroy these places, we will never find the cure.

The fragile planet The word environment means simply what is around

us. Some people live in a town environment; for others, their environment is the countryside. But air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk, the water we drink are all part of the environment.

Nowadays people understand how important it is to solve the environmental problems that endanger people’s lives. The most serious environmental problems are:

pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear pollution);

noise from cars, buses, planes, etc. destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty; shortage of natural resources (metals, different

kinds of fuel); the growth of population.

Ecology of man

It may sound funny to you, but man needs protection and care as much as animals. People’s habitats-their homes, towns and cities-must be kept ecologically clean. In the places where people drink poisoned water, eat bad food and breathe polluted air they suffer from serious diseases and die early; their children are born weak. No medicines prescribed by the doctors can help them. This problem becomes more and more serious with every passing day.

The modern way of life when people have little physical activity, use cars instead of walking, watch television for many hours and work on computers is turning them into legless creatures.

Many rivers and lakes are poisoned too. Fish and reptiles can’t live in them. There is not enough oxygen in the water. In such places all the birds leave their habitats and many plants die. It happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers. So they poison the water. After the water is used it becomes poison which goes back into rivers, lakes and seas.

Greenpeace Greenpeace is an international environmental

organization. It was founded in 1969 by a group of Canadian environmentalists. Members of Greenpeace appear in places where the environment is endangered. They always act fast and bravely. The whole world knows about the Greenpeace actions to stop hunting whales or killing baby seals. They block the way to ships that try to dump waste, and work hard to create a nuclear-free world. The activity of Greenpeace often annoys governments, companies and people who don’t care about the future of the world.

Page 21: We must take care of nature
Page 22: We must take care of nature

Sometimes Greenpeace activity can be quite

dangerous. For example, on July 10,1985,the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior , that was on its way to French Polynesia to protest against nuclear tests, was destroyed by French agents. It created a serious international accident.

Greenpeace has offices in man countries of the world including Russia. People, who can’t take part in Greenpeace actions directly support this organization with money.

Greenpeace members are often referred to as ”greens”. The “greens” are groups of people

whose aim is protection of natural things, e.g. plants and animals.

Being ‘green’ at school

1.You can start with the classroom. You could look at other classrooms as well as your own. List all the materials you can find: paper, pencils, glue, sticky tape and so on. How much do you use each term? You should keep a list. How could you use less?

2.You should help plants and animals to live and grow in your school grounds. Does your school use chemicals on the grass, trees or shrubs? Some of these may be bad for wildlife. Does your school grow any fruit or vegetables? Some schools have their own gardens.

3.Every day the school throws away a lot of rubbish. You should try to cut down waste. Can you find ways to count down the amount? Is litter a problem in your school? You could make a poster about litter.

Page 34: We must take care of nature

Transport, how people travel, is important for the environment. How does everyone get to school? By car, bus, trolley-bus, tram, bike, on foot? Walking and cycling is best, of course. You could share a car journey with other people.

It is really important to save energy in the school. There are many things to think about. You should always close doors in the winter. And you need to remember to turn lights out. It is extremely important to save water too. You should watch out for dripping taps.
