News and Notes Odds and EndsUp to Speed with Our New Executive Director

The Results Are In!

I wish to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received since arriving here in Plantation. I feel right at home with you and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and settling in for many years as your Executive Director. With my home being here in Plantation this position couldn’t be more ideal for me. I am close to my family and friends and I can come back quickly to the community if any needs should arise.

I would like to invite everyone to join me for Coffee Talk on Tuesday, August 7th, at 10:30 a.m. in the Oasis Lounge so that I can get to know you a little better.

One of my first priorities is to work with the management team to insure we are prepared for this year’s hurricane season. Tree trimming will be taking place beginning August 15th. If you have an automobile here we will be providing notices on when your vehicle may need to be moved. This will allow for access to the trees on the property and to

insure your car is not damaged during this project. Be sure you are prepared for the season with at least one working flashlight or lantern and extra batteries. Please review the updated copy of the Hurricane Preparedness Booklet which was placed in your cubbies.

Our new treadmill will be arriving sometime in August and we will provide updates on when training on the exercise equipment and new treadmill will be taking place.

Finally, did you know that 37% of our family here were direct referrals from YOU. Remember, you can earn a $2,000 rent credit for every friend that you send to us who moves in. Stop by the Sales Office for complete details.

It is the height of summer, so please be careful with regards to the heat and the sun. Be sure to stay hydrated and wear appropriate clothing when venturing outside. It’s hot out there!

Stay cool and enjoy a great month!

Lynn Thaxton, Executive Director

Thank you to all residents who participated in our survey. We had almost 50% participation in the Resident Satisfaction Survey. To those who responded, please know that your voice is definitely being heard. Overall we came in at 3.94/5.0 approval rating. Some of the comments included that the “residents feel safe in the building” and we have “nice and thoughtful staff.”

Dining Services received a lot of great comments and management is hard at work implementing changes. In the kitchen, our Chef has changed the Everyday Menu to include some healthier selections. He is also standardizing the special salad offerings into specific days. Look forward to the Cobb and the Nicoise salads. He will also be reducing the salt content in our soups, sauces and gravies. Residents who are on a heart healthy

diet will appreciate the change with the salt and for those looking for more salt there is always a shaker on the table. In the Dining Room, Manager Robert Canavan has adjusted his schedule to be available on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

The Lifestyle 360 Department continues to receive high marks. The top four suggestions for new activities were meditation, dance lessons, a technology group and a hearing support group. Andi will be setting up focus groups and speaking with residents who expressed interest. Once she understands what the needs are, she will look to make additions.

Again, thank you to everyone who responded and are helping make our community “a better place to live.”

Welcome These New Friends

Thank you for choosing Premier Residences as your new home!

Pool exercise for seniors is recommended by health professionals because it reduces joint pain like arthritis, sore muscles, relieves stress, allows faster recovery from injuries and stimulates circulation, promotes flexibility and allows the brain to release chemicals to make the body feel good. These are simple and easy movements in the water like walking, squatting, stretching, twisting, reaching, waving and punching. We also play games. Come laugh your way to feeling better.

Open Mic Like to sing, dance, play an instrument or tell jokes? We’re looking to hold an “Open Mic Night“ soon. If interested contact resident Jerry Brill at 561-573-7451.

Performance by the Scherzo Trio Sunday, August 19th • 3:00-4:00 p.m. — OL

The Scherzo Trio will be performing live at Premier Residences of Plantation on Sunday, August 19th at 3:00 p.m. The members of the group are: Erin Gittelsohn, Oboe Elizabeth Aron, Cello Sheng-Yuan Kuan, Piano

Trio member Elizabeth Aron’s parents, Jerry and Bernice Haberman, recently joined our Premier Residences family.

The Scherzo Trio is a classical music trio comprised of oboe, cello and piano based in South Florida. This unique ensemble is a twist on the traditional string trio, replacing the violin with the haunting sound of the oboe. As there are only a handful of works written for this combination, the members enjoy the creative challenge of arranging traditional music by substituting the oboe and cello for the original instruments. The result is a lush combination of sound, unexplored by most composers. Selections will include famous melodies by Schumann, Debussy, Grieg, Schostakovich and Tchaikovsky. Book Club with Phyllis

Do you enjoy discussing literature with like-minded individuals? Are you interested in joining a monthly book club discussion group? Contact Phyllis at 954-547-2189 for details.

Pool Exercise

Mondays 11:15 a.m.

Join Professor Phil Leto through the summer of 2018 as he presents topics recounting the lives of fascinating people, considers places of economic and strategic importance to the United States and examines historical and contemporary political issues (patriotism, political participation, trade, immigration, security) which stir intense debate within American society today. The Age of Flight Thursday, August 2nd • 10:45 a.m. — SS-92

From the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk in 1903 to Charles Lindbergh’s solo trans-Atlantic flight in 1927 to their devastating use in modern warfare, air flight and aircraft spanned great distances and captured the imaginations of people around the world. How did the world’s great airlines, designed to carry passengers in luxury with sumptuous meals served by buxom stewardesses, become “buses in the sky” selling soda, peanuts, Wi-Fi and rented pillows? Amelia Earhart Thursday, August 16th • 10:45 a.m. — SS-92

An American aviation pioneer and author, Amelia Earhart, in 1928, became the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-

selling books about her flying experiences and joined the faculty of the Purdue University in 1935. She disappeared during an attempted flight around the world in 1937. Researchers who recently tested bones discovered on Nikumaroro Island in the Pacific concluded “the only documented person to whom they

may belong is Amelia Earhart.” Eldercation Experience Life and Music of Harold Arlen Thursday, August 23rd • 7:30 p.m.. — SS Come enjoy “The Life and Music of Harold Arlen” as presented by Harry Getzov. This great American composer wrote over 500 songs, a number of which have become known worldwide. He composed the songs for The Wizard of Oz and is a highly regarded contributor to

the Great American Songbook.

Nova Lifelong Learning Vietnam: Then and Now Thursday, August 9th • 10:30 a.m. — SS

From bomb-scarred war zone to buzzing cultural scene and major tourist destination, from devastation to a fast growing economy, Vietnam has undergone a striking transformation over the last 30 years. We explore both the history and the complex mixture of the ancient and modern culture that is Vietnam today.

Your guide is Helene Herman, who has over 25 years of experience in global marketing for a variety of American manufacturers in diverse product areas. An Anthropology degree from NYU led to her lifelong interest in cultural diversity and her career tailoring products meet local values. She is an experienced presenter and a welcomed addition to the Nova Southeastern Lifelong Learning Institute program.

Murder Incorporated Thursday, August 23rd • 10:30 a.m. — SS

Murder Incorporated was the name the press gave to organized crime groups in the 1930s and 1940s that acted as the “enforcement arm” of the American Mafia. The trials of the members of this group captivated the public. Join Stephen Singer for a look at the gang.

Stephen Singer was a criminal defense attorney for 44 years before leaving New York. He also worked as a freelance journalist for Newsday, an associate attorney at the Legal Aid Society of New York City and a special agent in the intelligence division of the United States Treasury Department. He teaches history and criminal law topics including: Trying the High Profile Criminal Case; Psychology and Criminal Law; Ethics and Criminal Law and the Role of the Defense Attorney in Criminal Cases and his Trials of the 20th Century series. Health and Wellness: Managing Sleep as We Age Friday, August 3rd • 2:30 p.m. — SS

Many experts believe that normal aging can bring about changes to sleep. Older adults tend to get sleepy earlier in the evening, and tend to sleep less deeply than when they were younger. Join Sweta Tewary, Ph.D., M.S.W., BI, Assistant Professor at Nova Southeastern University’s Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences, for this informative session.

Classes run on eight Thursdays beginning August 29th (and excluding September 19th for Yom Kippur). You must commit to attend all eight weeks in order to enroll. Stop by the Lifestyle 360 Office to sign up.
