From the President

Presidents News 2014 March

Welcome to the first issue for this year. As the new President for the Wellington branch, I would like to briefly chat about the current branch items and projects and introduce myself.

Most people know me as Tiff Logan (Tiff), ex New Zealand Defence Force, now a business owner and Practitioner in Kilbirnie. I have a team of four female Dentists and our staff.

The branch has a committee representing you and what you want. I had great feedback last year about venues , timings and amount of meetings. Most that emailed me requested “ status quo”. So Wellesley it is and once a month. Two meetings may be held out of the CBD, one in Porirua and one in the Hutt Valley.

Projects for this year involve a continuation of the close liason with Downtown Community Ministry to re-open “the Peoples Centre”. Low cost dentistry for the very vulnerable, homeless and refugees. Some of you have already indicated that you are eager to help so as soon as DCM are ready to move forward we will inform you immediately.

Two of our committee members run the Graduate Professional Development Programme (GPDP), Drs Oliver Ferry and Dave Excell are the “ go to” people for this scheme.

If you are aware of any new Dentist in the Wellington area, please invite them to a branch meeting. As they are entitled to a complimentary meal and meeting attendance before joining our branch.

We are looking at a Wellington webpage, for our Branch, similar to

Dr Tiff Logan President Wellington NZDA

Dear Colleague,

Thank you for your support over the last two years, it has been much

appreciated. A new year is a time of change and in keeping with this, I

have made the decision to move on from Wellington, for family

reasons, to head over to Australia. My last day will be February

14th 2014. I have enjoyed my time here in Wellington, discovering the

restaurant and nightlife scene. While the weather has occasionally put

a damper on outdoor activities, you really can’t beat Wellington on a

good day.

I would like to thank you for supporting me and the practice. It has

been a pleasure being a part of your patient’s dental care.

Kind regards,

Rohan Rodricks

Dr Ferry asked if anyone had the time to assist him with the programme especially the tele-conferencing component. Dr Barnes offered to assist when required. Moved: Dr Fisher Seconded: Dr Welch

CORRESPONDENCE As tabled: Moved: Dr Hitchings Seconded: Dr Excell

FINANCIAL AS TABLED:

Moved: Dr Hitchings Seconded: Dr Symes GENERAL BUSINESS: Dr Corcoran informed Dr Logan that Dr John Boyens President of NZDA had contacted him offering to attend a Branch meeting giving members an opportunity to learn more about NZDA. Following discussion it was agreed that Dr Logan will invite Dr Boyens to a meeting in 2014.

Dr Hitchings updated the Committee on the progress of the contract relating to the Administration Role. Dr Symes offered to have an employment lawyer comment on it prior to it going to the Admin Assistant. There was full agreement on this process.

ACTION: Dr Symes to contact Employment Lawyer.

Dr Symes updated the Committee on the latest developments regarding the Downtown Community Ministry as emailed by Stephanie McIntyre. Stephanie was delighted to report that the building has been purchased by a buyer keen to promote DCM & the Dental programme and Stephanie is anxious to hear if the Wellington Branch are still supportive of the initiative. Following discussion Dr Logan asked Dr Symes to confirm with Stephanie that the Branch is still committed to this project.

ACTION: Dr Symes to contact DCM Director Stephanie McIntyre

Dr Logan spoke about an initiative that she is involved with within NZDA and that is proof reading and reviewing specific Codes of Practice being Informed Consent, Competency and CPD. Dr Symes offered some background on the challenges that are occurring between Dental Council and NZDA as both have Codes of Practice because the Dental Council believe that 1 group should not have sole input to any Code. A Committee was set up comprising of members from various relevant groups however they were unable to reach agreement on development of new codes or the review of existing codes. So in the meantime NZDA are continuing reviewing and developing Codes of Practice as they have done in the past. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact Dr Symes.

Dr Logan reported that she was delighted with the feedback she had received from members regarding the suggestions she had emailed to the Branch regarding Branch meetings. The consensus was:

The majority wish to retain a monthly Branch meeting

They supported having a meeting in the Hutt Valley and Porirua.

They supported the idea of engaging with different speakers and some

suggestions where Dr Darryl Tong, Anna Ferguson and Tania Stewart.

Dr Logan will liaise with those and other speakers to ensuring another year of quality speakers. Dr Logan has already secured Ivoclar to sponsor the March Branch meeting and Dr Excell was asked to contact Mr Scott Turner to see if he is available to present at the March meeting. Dr Excell also reminded Dr Logan that Lumino would like the opportunity to sponsor a Branch meeting.

ACTION: Dr Excell to contact Mr Scott Turner

Dr Williams offered to co-ordinate a Branch meeting format of having small groups where they look a various case studies report back to the meeting then giving others the opportunity to examine the different aspects of treatment planning that have been suggested by the different groups.

Dr Logan also asked the Committee for feedback on both the New Graduates Presentations and the Great Debate and if they would like to see them continue in 2014. Following discussion the consensus was the New Graduates Presentation was a way of encouraging the Graduates to attend the Branch meetings however the Great Debate could be substituted for something new in 2014 if Dr Logan wished.

Following discussion it was agreed that the Admin Assistant would contact the Dowse in Lower Hutt to see availability for the March meeting and she is to try and secure The Wellesley Hotel for the majority of the meetings and if it is not ready she is to contact CQ Conference and Function Centre. Dr Logan will look for a suitable venue in the Porirua area.
