Prolog

We didn’t start the fire, it was always burning since the world’s been turning. We didn’t start the fire, no we didn’t light it, but we tried to fight it.

Chapter 1

During this time, the

world was changing

into what we know it

today. Punk rock was

born! Originally called

“garage-rock” it

started a trend that

would form a whole

new subculture.

Chapter 1 (continued.)

The term "punk" was first used in relation to rock music by some American critics in the early 1970s, to describe garage bands and their devotees. It was also a subculture that scornfully rejected the political idealism and Californian flower-power silliness of hippie myth. Patti Smith in contrast, suggests in the documentary 25 Years of Punk that the hippies and the punk rockers were linked by a common anti-establishment mentality.

A new subculture was born. Later “Punk” was changed into other subcultures such as “emo” “scene” “indie” etc.

Beatlemania was born!

It was the fandom sweeping the world!

There were 52,000 calls from people requesting seats in the audience of The Ed Sullivan Show, but only 728 were available.

The first time a Beatles record was played in America was December 17, 1963. James Carroll, a Washington, D.C. disc jockey played a record his girlfriend had brought back from Britain called “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Due to listener demand, it played daily, every hour.

Heavy metal. Without

it, we wouldn’t have

Hydrowolf, Metallica,

Iron Maiden, Kiss, etc.

This music scene has

stuck around! Thanks to

the UK we bang our

heads in pride.

Woodstock is the world record holding concert. People came from all over God’s green Earth just to see this magical event.

The late change in venue did not give the festival organizers enough time to prepare. At a meeting three days before the event, organizers felt they had two choices. One option was to improve the fencing and security which might have resulted in violence; the other involved putting all their resources into completing the stage, which would cause Woodstock Ventures to take a financial hit. The crowd, which was arriving in greater numbers and earlier than anticipated, made the decision for them. The fence was cut the night before the concert.

The event was originally held in White lake New York.

Elvis was drafted into military service in 1958, Presley relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. He staged few concerts however, and guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. In 1968, after seven years away from the stage, he returned to live performance in a celebrated comeback television special that led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of profitable tours. In 1973 Presley staged the first concert broadcast globally via satellite, Aloha from Hawaii. Prescription drug abuse severely deteriorated his health, and he died suddenly in 1977 at the age of 42.

Chapter 9

Billy Joel, the writer and singer of We Didn’t Start The Fire was part of a group called the Echoes. In late 1965 the Echoes changed their name to the Emeralds and then to the Lost Souls before Joel left the band in 1967 to join the Hassles, a Long Island group that had signed with United Artists Records.

Joel got the idea for the song as he was talking with someone half his age, who averred that the world was an unfixable mess. Joel replied to him, "I thought the same things when I was your age". The person replied, "Yeah, but you grew up in the fifties and everybody knows that nothing happened in the fifties". Joel retorted, "Wait a minute, didn't you hear of Korea, the Hungarian freedom fighters or the Suez Crisis?" Joel later said those headlines formed the basic framework for the song.
