We develop, maintain and
facilitate an overall communications
strategy for all aspects of the
Grace congregation.
The Rev. Victor Kim was inducted into Grace Presbyterian Church as the Assistant Minister in January 1994 and as the Senior Minister in December 2000. He concluded 22 years
of service at Grace in December 2015.
Victor had a strong interest in mission and with his
leadership Grace reached beyond itself with new initiatives
and partnerships, including the Mustard Seed, Inn From the Cold,
Mexico Mission and lively support of Presbyterian World Service and Development. Victor’s commitment to the church being connected to the larger community led to Conversations of unCommon Grace, engaging in issues at the forefront of discussion and debate in our society.
Victor had a deep love for the people of Grace Church and his pastoral heart stretched
beyond this congregation. His faithful preaching and teaching, and his wonderful sense of humour and
friendship, will have a lasting effect on the many lives he touched. We wish him well.
A Farewell to the Rev. Victor Kim

REPORT OF THE SESSIONThe Session is comprised of 43 “ruling elders” and our ministers, “teaching elders”. We met 10 times in 2015 and were very ably moderated by the Rev. Victor Kim as he encouraged the free exchange of ideas while keeping deliberations focused on agendas.
Session was guided by deliberations of the Vision Committee as it worked to adopt a new strategic plan. Session committees reflect the diverse activities and programs at Grace.
The congregation accepted the recommendation of the Board and Session that Grace continue to secure property adjacent to the church to meet future parking, ministry and community needs.
At the end of the year, we prepared for another transition. After 22 years of journeying with us, the Rev. Victor Kim accepted a call to Richmond Presbyterian Church. The Kim family touched our lives in a profound and lasting way. Rev. Kim’s outstanding leadership has enriched our church, and we will miss his generous and gracious spirit.
Both the Session and the congregation express our deep appreciation to the Rev. Dr. Jean Morris and the Rev. Leslie Walker. We are especially appreciative of the gifts of our ministers and their commitment and faithfulness.
As we plan for 2016 we want to prayerfully keep pressing on to the future with God-centered optimism, while assessing our needs and being open to the vision of what God can do through us as a congregation.
Thank you to the many volunteers and the contribution you made to the life and work of this congregation. It is your work that enables Grace to be the hands and feet for Christ in this world.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015Historic Calgary Week: Grace hosted 85 historians who showed great interest in our 100 photo panel Hall of History, our unique display of wood working hand tools from the 1850s and the mystery painting The Shadow of the Cross by French Canadian artist Henri Ault in 1896.
The Session Committees and teams of Grace Church
illustrate the diversity of programs and people in our
congregation. This year, we are focusing on the people
transformed by the work of the committees.

Grace congregation.
Communications Shirley Philips, Convener
HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015c Communication Audit: A Communications
Consultant was contracted to audit our internal and external communications activities. Multiple recommendations were made to more effectively support the needs of the congregation and other committees, including conducting a workshop to uncover the brand characteristics of the church (to create consistency and relevance) and to hire a communications co-ordinator to undertake the communications work.
c Branding Workshop: A diverse group representing many areas of the congregation met to build consensus around the question: what does Grace Church stand for in the eyes of internal and external audiences? Through the workshop process, the group agreed on the following brand characteristics that describe the personality of Grace:
c thinking & learning c traditional c relevant c gracious c surprisingly open-minded c inspiring c abundance of resources & talent c engaging c dynamic compassion
These characteristics were crafted into two positioning statements, which provide consistent language to help the community understand who we are, what we do and who we serve. The positioning statements will be presented for Session’s approval in 2016, after which they will be added to the website and print materials, distributed and explained to each convener, and used as an external representation of our brand.

Transformational ImpactAdvent-ure was an intergenerational and intercultural learning experience. The homebound people who received the cookies from Advent-ure were delighted to know that these were assembled, decorated and delivered by families from the congregation.
Kathryn Smith and her children participated in Advent-ure, helping to decorate 200 cookies for distribution. “It surprised me that not one cookie was decorated the same as another one; there was lots of love and creativity put into it,” she said.
Kathryn said the children added “a wee tag” to each cookie bag, extending good cheer to each recipient. “It was a lovely bit of joy that went out to people at Christmas time.”

We hold conversations on subjects
that affect all of us to give a broader
understanding of these topics, both
inside and outside the church.
Conversations of unCommon GraceJim Campbell, Convener
HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015c An Inter-Faith Panel Discussion on Life,
Death and Life after Death: 150 people gathered to hear the Rev. Victor Kim; Rabbi Shaul Osadchey of Beth Tzedec Congregation; Dr. Wendi Adamek, the Numata Chair in Buddhist Studies at the University of Calgary and the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Simmins of Wild Rose United Church. Our minds were opened to how other faiths approach this subject and the problems and questions we now see for each of us.
c Medical, Ethical and Spiritual Reflections around Physician Assisted Death: 160 people gathered to hear Dr. Eric Wasylenko, a noted palliative care physician and medical ethicist, in conversation with the Rev. Victor Kim around the realities of palliative care and ethical questions around end of life issues.
PLANS FOR 2016c A conversation on Faith and Civic Virtue.
Transformational ImpactFrom observing deep conversations after each presentation, the committee believes that these conversations helped many people better understand “the end of life” and the different options. We also learned that palliative care is beautiful, quiet, and free of pain and fear.
![Page 13: We develop, maintain and - Grace Presbyterian Church...2015 GRACE CHURCH SNAPSHOT TOTAL MEMbERSHIP December 31, 2014: 503 New MeMbers – by profession of faith 4 – by certificate](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050404/5f81b11ec9414b506029c6e7/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015c Adult education workshops: Excellent
speakers attracted great attendance at workshops on Biblical Interpretation and Christian Spirituality.
c New nursery supervisor: A roster of volunteers and a new supervisor provided loving care of toddlers.
c Library additions: A complete set of the Interpretation Bible Commentary series was added to support independent home study and group Bible studies. Other additions included fiction and non-fiction titles covering current issues for children, youth and adults, plus Oxford, Harper Collins and the Reformation Study Bible.
PLANS FOR 2016c Grow our Youth
Ministry through implementation of a vision that includes classroom and experiential components, additional leadership, and relevant library resources.
c Offer a variety of opportunities to gain spiritual and Biblical knowledge, and to apply that knowledge in our real-life experiences, at times convenient for working adults and parents.
c Recruit and equip leaders to continue to provide an age-appropriate and exciting Sunday School.
Transformational Impact More than 50 adults attended the fall workshops on Christian Spiritual Formation on the topic of being both spiritual and religious. Christian Spiritual Formation is the activity of the Holy Spirit, moulding our lives into the likeness of Jesus Christ, through the growth of the mind, body, heart and will.
Ray Kellough participated in the workshops and said it was valuable for participants to be able to ask questions and seek guidance on things they wanted answered. “Workshops like that are important to keep people involved and to extend their knowledge,” Ray said. “It was thought provoking and enjoyable to see other points of view.”

Transformational Impact“I joke that I am saving the world, one blood pressure check at a time.”
So says RN Robin Tomlinson, a newly commissioned parish nurse. Robin is one of the team of volunteer nurses who consult with the congregation after Sunday worship. Recently, Robin met with a fellow who had sustained injuries from a recent fall. The pain medication prescribed by the emergency staff was wreaking havoc on his gastro-intestinal tract.
“I gave him the names and doses of over-the-counter medicines,” Robin said. “The following Sunday, he said to me, ‘you are a life-saver!’ What I suggested worked within a day; he was very appreciative.”
Robin said she appreciates Grace taking a “whole-body view” of wellness, spiritually and physically, and she enjoys applying her career skills by giving back to the community. “I love to teach people; it is very fulfilling and rewarding,” she said.

We learned a village in Malawi was in need of medical supplies so we provided $1,000 worth of supplies plus suitcases and transportation expenses. Samuel Banda brought back pictures of smiling faces in the clinic in Malawi.

GRACE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 111TH ANNUAL REPORT 2015
21
It was a time of transition for the
Board of Managers in 2015.
Due to fewer members, some
managers took on extra duties.
We take our responsibilities
seriously, and consider it a
privilege to serve the congregation
of Grace Church.
Board of ManagersHIGHLIGHTS OF 2015c Transition and turnover: Several position
changes: Chair, Treasurer and Secretary.
c Financial leadership: Involving all Board members and Session committee conveners in budget development. Now easier to follow financial reporting and review of accounts.
c Technology inventory: Compiling a complete inventory of the business technologies currently used to support the goals of the church.
c Maintenance work: Work to meet building code completed, solution for the parking lot ice from downspouts implemented, chandeliers secured, upgrades identified for Grace House.
c Parking: Consolidation of parking passes and ongoing search for additional parking spaces.
PLANS FOR 2016c Recruit 3 to 4 new members and organize
a Board retreat with a view to plan and prioritize for this year.
c Restructuring the Church accounts, improving financial processes and further enhancing financial reporting.
c Quarterly meetings with staff, Board and service providers to ensure future information technology infrastructure and applied information technology requisitions use IT governance to deliver sustainable value to Grace.
c Repair the church steps and get a new lawn sign, among other projects.
Transformational ImpactWe want to thank the congregation for their generosity in 2015.
In faith we look forward to the year 2016, and trust that our faithful God will also provide us with the means to fulfill the mission of Grace Church.

I am about to do a new thing; now it
springs forth, do you not perceive it?
Isaiah 43:19
A Look AheadWe took many steps in 2015 to prepare for the leadership transition, as the Ministry Resource Committee and the Transition Committee took active roles to update Ministers’ position descriptions, redistribute workloads and welcome the Presbytery representative who will help see us through the transition. We also welcomed a Co-ordinator of Volunteers who has supported the work of the Session.
In 2016, the transitional phase continues, as we actively seek a specially-trained Interim Minister who will help us assess our needs and goals for the future and the type of ministry model that will best support the congregation. We will undertake a complete human resources review, to ensure consistency and best practices.
It is a time of optimism, a time of opportunity, a time of transformation. With God’s guidance, we will be an inspiring and gracious urban congregation, using our abundant resources and dynamic compassion to transform lives.
