Cover: Illustration of a building being realized in France as part of a European construction project. Ten property companies are seeking to introduce a common Passive House standard in five European countries, allowing for differences in climate, legislation and traditional forms of construction. BASF and teams from our housing com-pany LUWOGE are responsible for knowledge transfer and helping the companies prepare for the EU’s 2020 CO2 reduction targets. To assure the quality of the architecture, Nicholas Michelin and his team from ANMA, Paris, are involved.www.anma.fr BASF: Supporting sustainable construction

Today, there are already more people living in cities than in the country. By 2050 it is estimated that the pop ulation will grow to about nine billion, and 75 percent of them will be urban dwellers. This is a challenge that demands new concepts for housing and construction.

As a leading provider of raw materials, systems and solutions to the construction industry, BASF helps you as architects, planners and urban developers to increase buildings’ energy efficiency and lifespan. In addition, we develop solutions that reduce the amount of resources needed for construction and contribute to greater living comfort.

Our insulation materials, concrete admixtures and many other products help to significantly reduce carbon emissions generated by buildings over the course of their lifecycles. According to the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, by 2030 around 6.5 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions could be saved globally in the area of housing and construc-tion as a result of investment in efficient technologies.

As a reliable partner to the construction industry, it is our goal to help increase this contribution to climate protection.

We understand sustainable construction as the pro-cess of developing built environments that balance economic viability with preserving resources, reducing environmental impacts and taking social aspects into account. As a result, BASF construction experts are actively engaged in Green Building Councils and work closely with architects, planners and urban developers to create housing for all types of climates and diverse architectural traditions.

We have published Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for the majority of our products. And our exper-tise in products, systems and solutions across the entire construction value chain – combined with your specific knowledge and the skills of our housing company LUWOGE and its subsidiary LUWOGE consult – result in reference buildings that have proven the value of our chemistry for construction throughout the world.

For BASF, active engagement means membership of key institutions around the world – including the US Green Building Council, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), and the Institute for Construction and the Environment (IBU).

Elastopor® H and Elastopir® can be used in metal-faced sandwich panels for industrial roofs – seen here on the football stadium in the British city of Derby – combining static and insulating functions in one product. Another application is Elastospray®, BASF’s airtight polyurethane spray foam insulation, which is applied directly at the building site on roofs, walls and floors, and guarantees optimal insulation without joints and thermal bridges.

Increasing theenergy efficiency of buildings

The historic warehouse district in Hamburg, Germany: Optimal thermal roof insula-tion with Elastopor® H and Elastopir® made of polyurethane.

Housing and construction accounts for around 40 percent of global energy consumption. Not surprisingly, you are seeking solutions that protect the climate and reduce energy costs. BASF offers a wide range of thermal insulation materials made of polystyrene and polyurethane foams, as well as finish systems.

According to a study by the Darmstadt-based Ger-man Passive House Institute on insulation products made by BASF or containing BASF raw materials, a building’s energy consumption can be reduced by about 70 percent with just a few centimeters of insu-lation. Innovative solutions for temperature manage-ment can even maximize this effect.

Increasing theenergy efficiency of buildings

BASF’s own housing company, LUWOGE, is head-quartered in this building in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Since 1872, BASF has constructed and provided convenient apartments for its employees next to the factory premises. Today, LUWOGE manages around 8,000 dwellings from all decades of the 20th century. Thanks to stringent German legislation, LUWOGE is experienced at fulfilling high standards of energy efficiency and sustainability in both renovation and construction. In 2006, LUWOGE founded a subsidiary, LUWOGE consult, an energy consultancy that capi-talizes on the company’s comprehensive knowledge and skills. In conjunction with local BASF teams, LUWOGE consult offers support to BASF customers worldwide.

www.luwoge.de www.luwoge-consult.de

Between 1998 and 2006, BASF’s housing com-pany, LUWOGE, completely modernized the Brunck Quarter, in Ludwigshafen, Germany, a typical residential area built in the 1950s. Taking economic, energy-efficiency and social aspects into account, the Brunck Quarter was given a radical makeover. The existing properties were converted into low-energy buildings, known as 3-, 5- and 7-liter houses because of their minimal heating oil consumption. New 1-liter houses were built alongside, insulated with panels made of Neopor®, the grey expandable polystyrene beads made by BASF. Based on this experience, LUWOGE consult has developed a methodology that can be adapted abroad.

The sustainable restoration of historic buildings and monuments is a creative and technical challenge. LUWOGE consult and BASF are part of a con-sortium comprising partners with complementary knowledge and skills. For the European research study BeemUp, the group is developing concepts that demonstrate the technical, social and economic feasibility of dramatically reducing energy consump-tion in existing multi-family buildings on a large scale. This building in the heart of Warsaw, Poland – partly destroyed during World War II – was rebuilt in 1948 and renovated in 2011. BASF’s MultiTherm® was used for insulation.

Approximately 24,000 square meters of BASF’s Senergy® Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) were used on the Pullman Hotel, a four-star resort and business hotel at the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. The Senergy® EIFS comprises expanded insulation board, adhesive reinforcing mesh, a base and finish coat. It provides better insulation for exterior walls in new and renovated commercial, residential and institutional buildings. Its long-term energy savings make it ideal for the hot Gulf climate.

La Clairière in Reims, France: the first passive building in French social housing. La Clairière uses less than 15 kilowatt-hours of heating energy a year per square meter. This is largely due to a thermal insulation system based on Neopor ® expandable polystyrene, while the building’s roof and floor insulation use Elastopor® made of polyurethane.

BASF’s Basotect® melamine resin foam is used for solar thermal applications. The construction sector benefits from its excellent thermal insulating properties and high temperature resistance. For i nstance, Viessmann, a Germany-based international heating systems manufacturer, uses Basotect® to insulate its solar collectors. Photo: Viessmann/BASF

Latent heat storage with Micronal® PCM was used on over 4,500 square meters of ceiling tiles and dry walls in this high school in Diekirch, Luxembourg. The phase change material (PCM) consists of microscopically small plastic capsules filled with a highly purified wax core. On melting, they absorb large amounts of heat from the environment, preventing the room temperature from rising further. At night, when the outside temperatures fall again, the heat is released again and the heat storage is ready for a new summer’s day.

This house is part of the British University of Notting-ham’s Creative Energy Homes project. BASF built an eco-efficient house to demonstrate how the right thermal insulation materials can provide afford-able and low-carbon solutions for buildings. The reflective roof means that the house absorbs less solar energy in summer, helping to minimize any local heat island effect. The system uses BASF’s coil coating PLASTICERAM®.

BASF’s specialist concrete repair solutions have been developed with a focus on long-term durability and performance – delivering maximum quality for years to come. BASF’s EMACO® Nanocrete range is the first time the concept of applied nanotechnology has been used in a formulated repair mortar. It can be applied quickly while improving density and reducing cracking tendency, as proven at this water tower in Chrudim, Czech Republic.

BASF offers a multitude of products to improve the performance of construction materials – enabling them to fulfill the exacting demands of major civil engineering projects, where stability and durability are critical. One example: the 57-kilometer long Gotthard tunnel through the Alps incorporates superplasticizers from the Glenium® range, hydration control agents such as Delvocrete stabilizer, and accelerators from the Meyco SA range, which all contribute towards high-quality concrete production.

Highly durable, robust and resistant: this is what sustainable construction should be. You as an owner want to keep maintenance costs low and prevent costly repairs. A longer life expectancy also means an improved lifecycle analysis and lowers the environmental impact of maintenance. That’s why BASF offers a variety of materials that ensure a building stays intact, even after decades.

Exposure to the elements and aging take their toll on buildings. With BASF’s vast range of refurbishment solutions, for example EMACO® Nanocrete, damages such as crumbling corners and balcony edges – and many other parts of the building – can be fixed.

The Masterflow® 9000 series is a specially designed grouting mortar for the construction of wind turbines. Its proven fatigue resistance ensures long-term durability. In addition, BASF provides epoxy corrosion protection powder for external and internal use for the steel and aluminum components of wind turbines. And last but not least, the rotor blades can be coated with BASF’s paint systems RELEST® Wind.

Concrete admixtures from BASF’s Glenium® family increase the durability and eco-efficiency of concrete. Achieving higher strength classes also enables more delicate designs – as shown at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

BASF has a long history of providing repair and protection solutions for water infrastructure projects. Our MASTERSEAL® waterproofing membranes have been specially developed to withstand chemical and mechanical impacts, protecting the concrete surface and prolonging the building’s life expectancy and service time. Sealants from BASF’s MASTERSEAL® product range have been used to waterproof the primary sedimentation tank in this waste water treatment plant, EDAR El Carambolo, in Seville, Spain.

The less time and the fewer human and material resources a construction project needs, the smaller its environmental impact and the lower the costs for those in charge. Chemistry can accelerate construc-tion processes, helping you as owners and contractors achieve greater productivity and a faster return on investment. For tenants, that means housing be-comes more affordable, which is key to ensuring a decent standard of living.

Conserving resources in construction.

Compared to conventional chipboard, wood-based material produced with Kaurit-Light® technology weighs only 450 kilograms per cubic meter. This low-ers transport and handling costs, and requires less packaging material.

Using BASF’s Glenium® concrete admixtures, up to 50 percent of the cement clinker can be replaced with recycled materials – including fly ash, a by-product of coal-fuelled electric power plants, and blast furnace slag obtained during steel production. That enables BASF’s concrete admixtures to save up to 60 percent of the carbon emissions generated by concrete production. In 2008, BASF’s concrete admixtures had already notched up savings of 22 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. Glenium ad-mixtures can be combined with the RheoMATRIX™ Viscosity Modifying Agent to form the Smart Dynamic Concrete concept, enabling highly fluid concrete with self-compacting properties. This saves time and energy when working with concrete.

Composite cements and/or supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash, blast furnace slag or silica fume, offer huge potential for clinker reduction in concrete. To exploit this, BASF has successfully launched X-SEED®, an engineered suspension of crystal seeds based on calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) nanoparticles.

X-SEED® boosts the hydration of fresh concrete in the early stages of the process, and accelerates concrete hardening at low, ambient and heat-curing temperatures. According to the Nano-Sustainability Check developed by the German Öko-Institut, this opens up remarkable opportunities in terms of energy reduction, material optimization, process efficiency, flexibility, and quality. As a result, X-SEED® significantly minimizes a structure’s ecological footprint. BASF’s new Life Cycle Analyzer helps improve

concrete characteristics. This special software offers solutions in major concrete improvement areas like process efficiency, energy reduction, and material optimization. It also provides enhanced quality specifications for manufacturers and users of concrete. The tool allows quick calculation of the environmental and cost impact of different concrete mix designs, allowing direct comparison of various scenarios.

BASF’s solvent-free MASTERTOP® floor coating provides a tough, scratch-resistant and seamless floor finish suitable for use in the healthcare sector. The seamless floor – without cracks or joints that could harbor germs – is easy to clean and therefore extremely hygienic. The coating can even be contin-ued up the walls to avoid hard-to-clean corners and crevices – good for hospitals like this one in Paris.

A growing population means an increased need for food processing. These facilities feature high temperatures, chemical cleaning and stringent hygiene regimes – creating an environment that is highly aggressive towards building structures. That’s where BASF’s industrial resin floor UCRETE® comes in, helping to protect factories. The Danish dairy company Arla, for instance, has been relying on Ucrete for decades. The first floor laid for the Arla group was at their Taulov facility in Denmark in 1989 – and it is still in use. The floors shown here are at Arla’s site in Leeds, in the United Kingdom.

Feeling comfortable at home, at work and during leisure time is vital to a healthy and balanced lifestyle. However, increasing numbers of people are suffering from side effects of our urbanized and industrialized society. One of these problems is noise. BASF has developed an intelligent solution for sound absorption that can be easily applied and decoratively designed. These sound absorbers create a pleasant acoustic environment and are becoming increasingly popular.

Fulfilling rigorous hygiene standards and minimizing maintenance costs are among the major challenges for construction projects in the health and food and beverage sectors. This makes a floor coating that contains antibacterial substances, inhibiting bacterial growth and/or killing bacteria highly useful. Complete with a non-porous, easy-to-clean and long-lasting surface, this solution cuts maintenance costs noticeably.

BASF’s foil coatings create attractive surface finishes on shelves, tables and cupboards. Foil coatings are clear coats that are applied to special paper, creating finish foils. These are used to coat the surfaces of furniture or doors. BASF’s FOILWalk® TU is a foil topcoat for floors. The coating not only beautifies floors, it also provides essential protection.

BASF’s Permaskin® brand offers compounds used to manufacture surface finishing films for three- dimensional construction elements. Leveraging an innovative process technology, parts such as doors or window shutters – which can be made of various substrates including wood, metal, plastics or composite materials – are coated with the Permaskin film. The wood grain is protected for the long-term, but the door looks as though it has been varnished – and it feels that way too.
