We are grateful. Because of your investment of time, food, and financial support, the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank served 152,000 men, women, and children across the Greater Peninsula during this past fiscal year. Your thoughtful gifts have had a positive influence on our ability to distribute more food to more individuals than ever before. We provided almost 11 million pounds of groceries last year – the equivalent of over 9.1 million meals – to our neighbors in need.

Who are these neighbors that needed our assistance? According to the Hunger in America 2014 research study, 25% of those we serve are children. These children are helped by our over 200 partner agencies as well as by our direct service programs such as our BackPack Program, our Kids Cafe program, and our Mobile Pantry program. The work of the Foodbank to help feed children is critical to our mission and to the future of our community.

Another 11% of those we serve are seniors over the age of 65, many of whom report being responsible for the care of their grandchildren. Over 18% of those we helped are either active duty military or retired veterans. Hunger in America 2014 also found that over 74% of households turning to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s pantry network report choosing between paying for food and paying for medical care in the past year. A large percentage reported having to choose between paying for food or for utilities, housing, and/or transportation every month during the year. The majority of those receiving food assistance had unpaid medical bills. You enabled all of these individuals to have food on their tables when they would not otherwise.

So you see, your gifts have an amazing ripple effect through our community…touching thousands of lives of people you may or may not know but pass every day on the streets of your city.

This past fiscal year, we had over 7,000 people give us over 31,000 hours of volunteer service. Volunteers work distribution sites, sort food, stock warehouse shelves, pack food bags for various programs, do clerical work, and work special events. Our volunteers come from all over – the military, corporate groups, local faith-based organizations, and schools – and we welcome them all because we cannot do what we do every day without their help.

Here’s what we’ve been doing this summer…New England Patriots Linebacker Jerod Mayo partnered with Food Lion Feeds to give back to the Hampton community he calls home by donating enough food to feed 100 families for an entire week. “I am very excited to be involved in giving back to the community I grew up in,” said Mayo, a Kecoughtan High School graduate. “Since food is one of our most basic needs, I felt that this program was the best way for me to provide necessary help to families in Hampton.”

The Flat-Out Events Chick-fil-A 10K/5K has helped provide over 87,000 meals to our neighbors in need. Walkers and runners of all ages come together on this Memorial Day weekend tradition by going the extra mile to bring hope for families facing hunger.

In support of Day to Serve, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made a donation of over 30,000 pounds of food to us, and to help celebrate, the First Lady of Virginia, Mrs. Dorothy McAuliffe, made a visit to our Foodbank.

The Legal Food Frenzy is a competition among the state’s legal community to see who can collect the most donations for two weeks in April. For the first time in the competition’s history, William & Mary Law School took home the Attorney General’s Cup in the Law School Category by collecting almost 5,000 pounds of food. Representatives from the VBA Student Council at William & Mary Law School attended a reception in July at the Executive Mansion in Richmond where Governor Terry McAuliffe and Attorney General Mark Herring presented them with the Attorney General’s Cup.

Thank you to Langley Speedway, Matt Waltz of Waltz Racing, LLC and the amazing race fans! Your support of Drive Out Hunger on Saturday, September 20th, helped provide 3,200 meals during Hunger Action Month.

On September 4th, we were honored to have 23 local elected officials volunteer at our Foodbank in honor of Turn Orange and Elected Officials Day in support of Hunger Action Month. Included were Congressman Bobby Scott, Senator Mamie Locke, Delegate David Yancey, Delegate Mayme BaCote, Delegate Brenda L. Pogge, the Mayors and Vice Mayors of both Hampton and Newport News, the Sheriff of Newport News and various City Council and School Board members. We thank them for their time and talents!
