evaluation of young people’s health and their attitude towards health

Key objectivesIdentify how young people assess their own health;

Evaluate lifestyle health determinants (nutrition, physical activity). Prevalence of risk behaviours (smoking, alcohol and drug abuse);

Study young people’s attitude to behavioural risk factors;

Key health problems of young people of Izhevsk (identified in Youth Monitoring)

Low physical activity of young people, prefer passive forms of leisure;

High prevalence of smoking, use of alcohol and “light drugs”;

High sexual activity combined with low protection (only 60% of respondents always use condoms);

High level of awareness about HIV and AIDS as an epidemic but limited knowledge about how to protect against the disease.

Internal project audit was conducted by Susanna Kharroubi (Turku, Finland) and Willy de Haes (Rotterdam, Holland).

In the course of the audit visits the experts met project stakeholders and cities authorities where they discussed the outcomes of the first project year and planned goals for the second year.

Focus groups results (attitude of young people)

Relatively high level of awareness about ways of HIV transmission and ways to reduce risky behaviour;

Young people often disregard the rules of safer behaviour;

There is not much behind this disdain but: a hope that “it may happen to anyone else, not to me…”;

City multi sectoral Action Plan for 2010 on raising awareness among young people on HIV/AIDS, and healthy sexual behaviour (“We choose life”) (City Administration order No 377 from Dec 31, 2009)

Long-term city target programme “Healthy City – Health Izhevsk” for 2011 – 2013 on prevention of HIV/AIDS among adolescents and young people” (the programme is currently being developed according to the decision of the City Council of Izhevsk from Oct. 22, 2009, No 553).

Key project outcomes

Improved communication between regional and city authorities, and services involved in HIV/AIDS prevention;

Development and adoption of a City Multi Sectoral Action Plan for 2010 on raising awareness among young people on HIV/AIDS, and healthysexual behaviour (“We Choose Life”) – City Administration order No 377 from Dec 31, 2009. All perquisites for a successful implementation are there.

Inter-city and international cooperation; sharing experience and best practices when creating new city action plans and inter-city projects.

The project allowed to focus attention of young people and city authorities on a very acute topic – HIV/AIDS. This cooperation helped start looking for effective ways to address the problem.
