The COVID-19 pan-demic changed the way people live. One readily felt effect was spending more time at home. Ve-hicles sat idle in drive-ways and even some automotive insurance providers reduced rates because people were driving much less.Even with stay-at-

home measures in place, people still need to leave their homes to stock up on essentials, such as food or medicine. In other cases, people may have been essen-tial workers who drive for a living, including delivery drivers or health care personnel who were incapable of working from home.Any time a person goes

out in public, he or she runs the risk of contract-ing viruses. Bacteria and germs may reside

on various surfaces, including those inside vehicles.People want to protect

themselves and now are more aware of the importance of frequently cleaning and sanitizing their cars. Keeping a vehicle safe to drive without affecting its upholstery or electronic components is para-mount.The Centers for Dis-

ease Control and Pre-vention makes a distinc-tion between cleaning and disinfecting. Clean-ing refers to the removal of germs, dirt and impu-rities from surfaces. It does not kill germs, but can lower their num-bers. Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. The following are some ways to deeply clean and sanitize a car.

· Wash hands. First and

foremost, it is crucial to wash your hands before and after using the car. This can reduce the likelihood of growing ill because of transferred viruses or bacteria.Use rubbing alcohol.

Solutions that contain 70 percent alcohol are effective against many viruses and bacteria, including coronaviruses, says the CDC. Further-more, Jeff Stout, Exec-utive Director of Global Innovation at Yanfeng Automotive Interiors, says that, for the most part, nearly every inte-rior surface of a vehicle can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Plas-tic to painted chrome to imitation leather have been tested to ensure they don’t degrade when exposed to pure isopro-pyl alcohol.Avoid bleach or hy-

drogen peroxide. While bleach and peroxide are

very effective cleaners and sanitizers, they are likely to damage a car’s upholstery, according to Consumer Reports.Use soap and water:

Experts say that vig-orous washing with a soap-and-water solution can be effective against many contaminants because it breaks down the protective envelope that surrounds corona-viruses and other germs to disarm them. Friction also can help to break down germ cells during cleaning.“You want to do the

Technology has trans-formed nearly all facets of life, including edu-cation. While desks and blackboards can still be found in the classroom, technology has become more and more influential in regard to how students learn.Many teachers now

employ tablets and other devices to help students better understand their coursework. Devices can make for useful learning tools, but when does screen time cross over from useful learning tool to something that’s potentially harmful to students’ overall health? The American Acad-emy of Pediatrics has produced age-specific guidelines that can help parents determine if their school-aged children are spending too much time staring at screens.Children between

two and five years of ageParents should limit

screen time for this age group to one hour per day of high-quality programs. The AAP advises parents to co-view with children in this age group so they can help kids understand what they’re watching and how it applies to the world around them.Children ages six

and olderThe AAP does not

provide specific infor-mation regarding how many hours children ages six and older should use screen media. However, the AAP advises parents to make sure such media does not take the place of adequate sleep, physical activity and other behav-iors essential to health.In addition to follow-

ing AAP recommenda-tions about screen time as closely as possible, parents can take steps to ensure their children are not spending too much time using their devices.• Promote extracurric-

ular activities. Urging children to participate in extracurricular activ-ities that do not employ screen media, such as sports, music lessons and academic clubs, can be a great way to get kids to put down their devices and engage in in-person interactions with their peers.• Establish no-device

hours at home. The AAP recommends that parents designate certain times of the day as media-free times for the whole fam-ily, and not just children. ture as summer vacation winds down. The chance to unwind in a struc-ture-free setting can bene-fit students at the onset of summer vacation. Many parents grapple with the notion that their children’s lives are overscheduled, and the Cleveland Clinic notes that limiting orga-nized activities clears up down time for kids to play and relax and spend time with their families. So it’s important that parents afford their children this down time during summer vacation, only gradually introducing more structure as the school year draws closer. In the weeks before the school year is slated to begin, start waking kids up a little earlier and reintroducing bedtimes for younger children who may have been staying up

later over the last couple of months. This can be an effective way to begin slowly preparing youngsters for the structure of the school year.· Encourage

children to read throughout the summer. A report from the education publishing company Scholastic found that 47 percent of parents are unaware of the “sum-mer slide,” which refers to the loss of academic skills that occurs when school is not in session. Scholas-tic notes that the slide is largely attributed to a lack of reading when school is not in session. By encour-
