KANONSWIVEL JOINTS

Absolute leak-free designSwivel joints have been used in the processing industryfor a long time. The use of swivel joints in metal loading arms becamecritical because of the extraordinarily high bending andaxial load combination, due to the reach of the loadingarm and wind forces.KANON swivel joints are developed to withstand allthese loads without leaking. In fact, leakage and regularmaintenance is something which is unknown withKANON swivel joints.

KANONLOADING ARM

MODELS

The MLA260 series is the most efficient range of marineloading arms on the market, due to the slim design andthe availability of a number of design options to ensurethat specific site requirements are met in the best possibleway.

The MLA260 can be used with virtually all liquids andgases that are capable of being transferred throughpipes. The use of a unique double inboard arm hasresulted in the smallest design footprint possible whilstensuring that the loads encountered at the MLA260 baseplate are the lowest when compared with any other typeof arm.

MARINE LOADING ARMS

The MLA260 model can be configuredwith more than one fully separated, self-supporting product lines, which aredesigned to absorb all possible forcesassociated with structural mass, fluidweight, pressure load and wind load.

The MLA272 series is specifically used forcryogenic or highly corrosive or toxicchemical service. This type of loading arm has a separatesupporting structure with floating productand/or vapour pipe.

Both types of loading arms MLA260 andMLA272 consist of a symmetric construc-tion. Full balance of these loading arms isprovided by means of a rigid pantographlink, which connects the outboard arm tothe rotating counterweight. Special carehas been given to the rotating pivots of thepantograph bar both in design and in mate-rial selection thus assuring smooth opera-tion with minimum maintenance.

EVERYTHINGABOUT OUR

EXPERIENCE

Operation:KANON Marine Loading Arms can be operated eithermanually or hydraulically, depending on product pipesize, physical dimensions and fitted accessories.

Hydraulic operation requires 2 drives for inboard andoutboard arm movement and 1 drive for slewing(rotation) movement.

Operation of the hydraulic loading arm can be effectedby means of:• Levers directly mounted to the valve block adjacent tothe loading arm stand post – (manual hydraulicoperation)• By pushbuttons on either the operators console or onthe remote control pendant box/wireless set – (electrichydraulic operation).

All KANON hydraulic and electrical control systems areinherently safe. The hydraulic circuit includes over-pressure relief valves adjusted to 190 bar maximum(system pressure maximum 210 bar). Specific details ofhydraulic controls are provided in separate bulletins.

MAKINGTHE RIGHT

CHOICE

When deciding upon a conceptual design for road andrail tanker loading stations some basic principles need tobe considered. Top and Bottom loading each have theirown advantages, which can benefit the installation whencorrectly applied.

Features and benefits of both Top and Bottom loadingarms are provided in later sections detailing theseproducts more fully.

In general terms, however, the basic design data neededfor a loading station includes the following, all of whichmay not be applicable in every case.

Design data may include:• Type of fluid; temperature, pressure• Viscosity in normal/abnormal condition• Capacity in m3 or tonnes/hour• Multi-product loading• Number of different fluid media at one loading station• Number of loading arms filling simultaneously at onetanker• Required level of operator safety• Environmental requirements; i.e. vapour return orrecovery overspill protection• Integration with metering or weighbridge facilities.

Page 13: WE CARE ABOUT LOADING SYSTEMS - Hugo Tillquist® · of loading and unloading systems for marine, road and rail tankers. ... requirements of OCIMF and major oil companies. ... This

13

The following is applicable irrespective ofwhether top or bottom loading, or even acombination of both is specified.

A common requirements for all fluidtransfer systems is that contact with manand environment should be avoided. Thisdemands no leakages, non-spill connect/disconnect, self draining systems, lockablestored position, etc.

Hundreds of user friendly and easy to operateKANON loading systems are in use todayin highly demanding applications.

This brochure provides the tools to enablethe correct solution to be selected.

BALANCING

Loading arms should be balanced such thatminimum weight is borne by the operatorirrespective of the position of the arm.Balancing starts with the loading armdesign; forces working on one end ofthe arm are to be compensated forby traditional counterweight, or moreadvanced spring balancing, at the other.

The maintenance free balance cylinder isdesigned for applications which demandless space and can be combined withhydraulic or pneumatic operation.

KANON spring cylinders with multiplecompression spring packages, can beadjusted to meet changes in operatingconditions. Compared with conventionaldesigns, KANON adjustable spring cylindersexcel in terms of safety and long life.

TOPLOADING

ARMS

KANON top loading arms are specially designed to suitboth open filling of a wide range of products across allindustry sectors or closed filling of the type of highlyaggressive liquids associated with the chemical andpetrochemical industries.

Loading arms can be manufactured for every application, and following years of experience, KANON have developed, and continue to develop, widely accepted solutions for fillingtankers.

The three basic top loading styles are:1) Single Top Loading Arm2) Single Top Loading Arm with vapour return orpressure line

3) Single Top Loading Arm for vapour return.

Top loading arms can be providedwith various usefull accessories(as shown later in this brochure)including:• Top level detection: (bubble pipe sensing or electronic)• Pressdown cylinder to prevent the arm lifting• Drop pipe deflector• Telescopic drop pipe (preventing foaming or electrostat-ic build up).

Page 15: WE CARE ABOUT LOADING SYSTEMS - Hugo Tillquist® · of loading and unloading systems for marine, road and rail tankers. ... requirements of OCIMF and major oil companies. ... This

15

Where required, top loading arms can beprovided with heat-tracing, jacketing andinsulation.

1) Single Top Loading ArmUsually equipped with four swivel joints, and with or without a cone, the standardloading arm offers great flexibility and coversthe complete range of manhole sizes asfound on most tankers. For closed fillingapplications additional swivel joints can beincluded in the drop pipe to ensure stressfree connections.

2) Single Top Loading Armwith vapour return line, cone, press unit andtoplevel controlSemi-closed loading incorporating a conein combination with a vapour line, eitherhard piped to form a double top loadingarm, or flexible and piggy-back mountedon a single product arm is the more typicaldesign. This solution offers effectivevapour return whilst maintaining flexibilityfor the tanker fleet.

Alternatively, fully closed loading usingsecure flanges, or specific couplings, provides a true ‘closed loop’. However, mating connections are required on boththe loading arm and tanker top dictatingthe need for a dedicated tanker fleet.

Closed loop system also offers thepossibility of unloading by pressure, through the drop pipe of the product armwhilst pressurizing the tank via the ‘vapourline’ of the loading arm.

BOTTOMLOADING

ARMS

The advantage of Bottom Loading Arms is that these canbe operated at ground level without need for loadingplatforms.

When using a single bottom loading arm, the vapour isusually vented through an opening at the top of the tank.Preferably, this should be capable of being opened fromground level thereby preventing the need for the operatorto access the top of the truck. This loading procedure, using a single bottom loading arm, is widely used and isreferred to as an ‘open loop’ product transfer.

Increasingly, however, a combination of two bottomloading arms are used simultaneously to provide ‘closedloop’ product transfer. In this configuration, the productis filled through one Bottom loading arm whilst thevapour is recovered through a second usually having asmaller diameter than the product arm. This technique isnecessary for low density liquids (such as butane andpropane) and fluids with toxic or explosive vapours. Theclosed loop operation prevents product escaping into theatmosphere and offers the best possible operator safetywhilst minimising environmental pollution.

Page 17: WE CARE ABOUT LOADING SYSTEMS - Hugo Tillquist® · of loading and unloading systems for marine, road and rail tankers. ... requirements of OCIMF and major oil companies. ... This

17

BOTTOM LOADING ARMS

Bottom unloading with a single loading armcan be achieved using a tanker surgepump or even more simply by gravity. Thelatter method may require a low-heightbottom loading station with special compact-design swivels designed to prevent ‘airpockets’ in the product line.

As with top loading arms, double bottomloading arms with suitable couplings canbe used for pressurized unloading usingthe vapour arm to pressurize the tanker.

With all bottom unloading methods practicallyall product is evacuated from the tanker.

Bottom loading arms are also particularlysuitable for use with electro static sensitivefluids.

As with the Top loading arms, the use ofKANON balance cylinders ensures thatBottom loading arms can be manoeuvredthrough all positions with minimal effort.

HorizontalBalancing SystemIn addition to the overall balancing of heBottom loading arms, KANON’s optionalhorizontal balancing system keeps theoutboard pipe horizontal in every connectingposition.

Compared with systems incorporatingconventional gas struts, this uniqueparallelogram design provides true balancingof all forces, especially when the arm is fittedwith heavy valves or couplings.

KANON’s ergonomic design eliminateshard physical work for the operator, reducingthe connection to a light duty, one manoperation.
