Final dress rehearsals for the Senior School production of Beauty and The Beast took place this week and I urge anyone who has not yet booked a ticket to do so – the acting, singing, dancing, music, sound and lighting are first class. What a wonderful way it will be to end a positive and productive School term.

FROM THE HEADMASTER

www.girton.vic.edu.au

We have a strong culture of Community Service at Girton Grammar, borne of a long history of understanding that for those whom much has been given, much is expected. As I

remind our students often, it is a privilege to attend this School so I was once again gratified to see so many of our students out in the community recently, supporting the annual Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.

Last year Girton raised more money for this cause than any other in the State and this year, we had more than 250 students, door knocking across Bendigo, Castlemaine and beyond, to help raise money for the Salvation Army and for those in need. More than $7,500 was raised, a phenomenal effort that will make a real difference to many lives.

An information session was held this week for participants of this year’s World Challenge program. Whilst the trip forms part of our Outdoor Education co-curriculum program, it also has a strong Community Service offering. Students taking part in these overseas trips understand that to feel good you need to do good, with a large component of each trip, this year to Thailand and Cambodia, devoted to charitable work in remote local communities. Thirty six students and six staff will depart soon on the trip of a lifetime and I wish them a rewarding and safe journey.

Mid-year examinations have taken place in the Senior School for the last couple of weeks. It is important to recognise that testing is conducted for a number of reasons, not only for the purpose of evaluating students and assigning grades. Active retrieval of information that occurs during tests, for example, is a valuable skill that can be transferred to a number of other situations. A good teacher will quiz students often. Research shows that students tested frequently tend to study more and with more regularity. This questioning approach also allows students and teachers to discover gaps in knowledge and focus study efforts on difficult material.

We were delighted this week to find out that two of our Year 11 students, Maya Mann (Year 11 Jenkin) and Ruby Stone (Year 11 Riley) have been selected to take part in a national residential six day Science conference to take place at Brisbane University in July. This will be an incredible experience for these young scientists and you can read more about it in this edition of eLink. Our Senior School Science department continues to be a shining example of the importance of extending learning beyond the classroom.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

One of the joys of teaching younger students is having a front row seat as they begin their journey as readers. Watching the joy of anticipation as a book is read to them is replaced by excited conversations about what is happening in the books they are reading themselves. For some children factual texts take their interest and sharing facts and figures and interesting historical snippets becomes their passion. Our role as educators, parents and role models is to foster and encourage reading, regardless of the form they are most drawn to. Last Wednesday our students all participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime.

This is an annual event when schools, pre-schools, childcare centres and bookshops around Australia all read the same book at the same time to promote the value of reading and literacy. Each year a book by an Australian children’s author and illustrator is chosen by the Australian Library and Information Association. This year the book was ‘I got this Hat’ by Jol and Kate Temple, illustrated by Jon Foye. Year Four students all took a turn to read about a hat and where they got it from. I encourage parents to spend some time over the weekend reading either with, or alongside their children, and discussing the joys and benefits of reading from a personal perspective.

FOOTY JUNIORS PIONEER THEIR SKILLS

Junior School football enthusiasts from Girton Grammar Junior School have been enjoying weekly football training sessions with players from the U/18 Bendigo Pioneers Football Club.

Students from Years One to Six have been taught some of the finer tips and tricks of the trade from the Pioneers players who have formed a unique partnership with the School.

Mr Matthew Maruff, said that the main aim of the weekly training sessions was fun.

Friday night footy is a great way for students to finish off their week with some of their friends, and teachers as well as some of the Pioneers players.

The idea is to simply get more students involved in physical activity and to provide some of the older children with an opportunity to be role models for the younger participants.

It’s a relaxed and happy atmosphere and the students feel pretty special training alongside players who might one day make it to the big league,” Mr Maruff said.

Talent Manager of the Bendigo Pioneers, Steve Sharp, said that partnering with Girton Grammar School gave the players an opportunity to further develop their leadership skills.

“It is important that our players nurture grass roots sports for primary school boys and girls, providing the inspiration for young people to reach an elite level in sport,” Steve said.

The next Bendigo home game for the Pioneers is at the QEO on Sunday 19th June when they meet traditional rivals and neighbours, the Murray Bushrangers, at 12noon. This game will provide an opportunity for all local football people to come and support the Pioneers.

GIRTON HOSTS PESA REGIONAL FINAL

Emelie Mahony (12 Frew) competed brilliantly in the VCAA Plain English Speaking Award Regional Final. Girton hosted the regional final on Monday 23rd May. VCE students from Moama Anglican Grammar School, Crusoe Secondary College, St Joseph’s College Echuca, Bendigo South East Secondary College, Bendigo Senior Secondary College and McGuire College Shepparton, each delivered a prepared six minute speech, then a two minute impromptu speech about growing through our experiences. Emelie’s speech on the social problems of gambling was delivered superbly. She lost narrowly to a student from Bendigo Senior Secondary College. Thank you to Mr Schofield for assisting with the organisation of the day, and to Heather Dows from the canteen for supplying the morning tea. The two VCAA adjudicators and the staff and student visitors from the other schools were impressed with the facilities at our wonderful school, our hospitality, as well as the high standard of competition.

PRISON EXCURSIONLE

GA

L ST

IES

‘I’m going to prison, mum,’ it does not appear nor sound the best phrase to be saying to your parents, unless playing an innocent game of family Monopoly. For myself and 11 other Unit 1/2 legal studies students, it was not such an innocent conversation.

On the 6th of June, we traveled to the Loddon Prison, where we were shuffled through what can be best described as an airport scanner, told to empty our pockets and taken through the prison precinct into the ‘visitation’ room. It was here we were given an overview of the facilities, prison life and ultimately; introduced to four prisoners.

Each of the four men had different circumstances surrounding how they had entered prison, each with different views on prison life. After a short game of ’three guesses to work out what I did’, we were permitted an in-depth discussion with each of the men, where they explained their actions as best they could.

One was doing time for fraud, in the form of underpaying a large figure for postage services. Another was in for drug trafficking and robbery, another for drug possession and assault, and finally; one for murder.

Of the four men, the most shocking was by far (and to no person’s surprise) the murderer. Although seemingly calm and willing to note how he had stabbed someone multiple times with a knife, he seemed more willing to discuss prison life and his own self-induced psychological pain. He spoke of how violence became a feature of everyday life, how self-harm was prevalent and how he is accountable for his actions. The details of his crime were later revealed by a prison guard.

Each man spoke of how no person in prison ‘expects’ to end up there, yet they still do. They spoke of a ripple affect, which stems from one small poor choice and can lead to even greater mistakes, and how we should not be so foolish to make similar mistakes. If there is one message we all left with, it was that if we do the wrong thing, there is no ‘get out of jail free’ card in real life.

Mathematics Tutorials Mathematics tutorials are an opportunity for students to gain assistance with their Mathematics from a member of the Mathematics staff in a group environment. It is an ideal opportunity for students to seek extra assistance with their work, for students to gain additional practice of the skills learnt in class or to do their homework in a studious environment. The tutorials are not one on one tutoring.

Every session there is a different Maths teacher rostered and the tutorials are conducted on the first floor of the Naughton Family Building

HEADINGSTAGE TRANSFORMS STUDENTS

Actors from this year’s Senior School production of Beauty and The Beast at Girton Grammar School will be virtually unrecognisable on stage as their costumes, make up and characters come to life in a gritty reimagining of the much-loved Disney classic.

Five months of intense rehearsals are coming to an end with the curtain rising at the Ulumbarra Theatre next week on the School’s biggest and best production ever.

Mr Matthew Maruff, said that he can hear rehearsals from his office.

“The end result of a rigorous production schedule is shining through in phenomenal performances by our musicians and actors.

“This year’s production will feature over 100 cast members, a full symphony orchestra with more than 30 musicians, 7 spectacular choreographed musical numbers and over 100 sensational costumes.

“For the first time, we will be staging a Senior School musical drama in the Ulumbarra Theatre.

Our goal is to provide students with a professional theatre experience that rivals the best in this country,” he said.

The show itself will be a completely reimagined version to the original Beauty and the Beast Disney classic, with a broody and mysterious take on this timeless tale of love and deception, trust and treachery. The audience will be challenged to question what true beauty means and whether people can really change.

Within an artistically inspired atmosphere, Girton students quickly develop a sense of confidence and an avenue for creative expression that weaves its way through all parts of school and home life.

“From a production program that looks as good as any you would find at a major Melbourne show to costumes, props and stage effects that are staggering, our Drama and Music Departments have stopped at nothing to make this a show that our students and our School community will be proud of for a very long time,” Mr Maruff said.

HEADINGFIRST TIME STAGE PERFORMER LANDS LEAD

Year 12 student, Ethan Lees, had a bit-part in the compulsory Year 8 Production at Girton in 2012 and until auditioning for this year’s musical drama production of Beauty and The Beast, had not been on stage since.

Ethan likes singing and thought it might be fun to be in a production but it was his friends who convinced him to get involved.

“I had a few friends wanting me to do a production with them and thought that seeing this was my last opportunity, I might as well have a go.”

“In the audition, we had to sing a few lines and do a short monologue from the play. We were given two options for each.

“I didn’t really have any expectations of getting a role, just hopes.

“By the time the lists were out, I had already been called back for some more singing, so the only real surprise left was to find out which character I had been given.

“I was definitely not expecting The Beast,” he said.

Ethan describes his portrayal of The Beast as darker and more sinister than the character from the original Disney classic and loves being able to… “let go and yell a little, have a growl.”

“I would definitely audition again, it’s been really fun and I’ll remember this forever.

“I am super nervous, but I know it’s going to be great,” he said.

When it comes to giving advice to other students who are thinking about being in a Girton Grammar production, Ethan says to just go for it.

“You have nothing to lose. It’s not all about experience, as is obvious when looking at my case. Try your best, and see where it will take you,” he said.

HEADINGWHEN ACADEMICS AND ACTING COLLIDE

As a Year 11 winner of a VCE Premier’s Award for Systems Engineering, pitted against Year 12 students, it comes as little surprise that Lucas Phelps invented the candelabras that act as “Lumiere’s” hands in this year’s Senior School production of Beauty and The Beast.

Lucas says that Systems Engineering and Acting might not be at odds to the degree that people might imagine.

“The main assessment for Systems Engineering involves designing, planning, and building an electromechanical system. This process of working in fine detail on a single project is shared between both acting and Systems.

”Engineering comes more naturally to me than being on the stage but this doesn’t diminish my love for acting,” he said.

Lucas played a lead role in the 2015 production of The 39 Steps, which was his first time in a production so auditioning to be in this year’s production was a no-brainer for him.

”I had an amazing time performing in the production of The 39 Steps last year, and have always loved musicals.

“The dramatic community at Girton is so incredibly supportive allowing me to become much more confident and outgoing.

“I am slightly nervous about the forthcoming production but I would have to say that I am more excited than nervous because I love being on stage and performing,” Lucas said.

Lucas plans on having both Engineering and Acting in his life beyond school. He plans on studying either Science or Engineering but also wants to be involved in acting and drama at University. He says his only regret when it comes to Acting is having not become involved in productions at Girton much earlier.

“I encourage anyone to go out there and try acting. Everyone involved in a Girton production will tell you how much they get out of it and just how much fun it is,” he said.

SCHOOL SCIENCE STUDENTS GET UNIVERSITY GIG

Year 11 Girton Grammar School students, Maya Mann and Ruby Stone are two of 48 Science students selected to take part in a national residential 6 day Science conference to take place at Brisbane University in July.

Maya and Ruby were selected from applicants all over Australia, making them eligible to take part in the 2016 Youth ANZAAS (Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science) event.

Headmaster at Girton Grammar School, Mr Matthew Maruff, said that there is a decline in the number of students taking up science and seeing it through as a profession in this country.

“Australia needs to invest in scientific research and it should be a major exporter for this country so it is up to schools to nurture the next generation of technical experts.

Opportunities outside the classroom, like the Youth ANZAAS event, are really important in fuelling passion for Science,” he said.

The 2106 Youth ANZAAS event will provide students with the opportunity to visit world-class research facilities, meet leading scientists, and undertake experiences usually unavailable to

the general public. The conference also allows students to meet likeminded peers and other young adults who share their passion for science.

Maya and Ruby currently study Biology and Chemistry and both are likely to join the ranks of graduates from this School who go on to study Science at the Tertiary level.

“As Australia’s dependency on natural resources lessens, the need to embrace new technologies is increasing.

At the core of the changes that must be made if we are to remain globally competitive is the need to focus on STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

“We are immensely proud of Maya and Ruby who follow in the footsteps of previous Girton students to be selected for ANZAAS and other national and international science forums, including Liam Murphy who last year won a Silver medal at the 2015 International Science Olympiads (Biology) in Denmark,” Mr Maruff said.

During examination week students from Year 8 had the opportunity to undertake two sessions selected from a range of ICT programs. The programs on offer wer 3D Printing, Robotics, Photography, Video Making and Textiles. This allowed students to complete projects and challenges that developed their skill levels in a particular field of Technology.

Students in Year 7 also had the opportunity to be trained in the safe use of ICT as well as hear from members of the Victoria Police force about how to behave appropriately whilst online.

During exam week it was great to have a break from pen and papers and to work on computers for a while. When I chose this as an activity I didn’t even know that Girton had a 3D and a 2D printer. I learnt a lot by the last session and was really excited to print my design off.

In the 2016 mid year exams week the year 8 students got to do an ICT activity. This I found was a fun break from the exams. There were many different ICT groups with a few of them being 3D printing, robotics and photography. I was part of the robotics group, and to be honest when I first found this out I was a little disappointed because I was hoping to get into 3D printing. By the end I was glad I was in robotics. Our first lesson was period 1 Monday and every one was itching to start building their bots. The robotics group was an all boy group but I believe girls would have enjoyed it just as much. We had to work in pairs and my partner was Julian. We had many options of what robot we wanted to make and like two other groups we chose the ‘Battle Tami’. We started building and I was very surprised at how fun building was. We were of course looking forward to the end. We made plans to battle against the other tami’s and got most of it built in the first session.

In the second lesson we finished building our bot. It was looking good and we were ready to fight! But we had to program it first. Julian and I took turns doing parts of the programming. To my relief we used a simple programming programme that anyone can use. When we had done the first bit of programming we decided to

test the bot to see if it did the right thing. It was meant to go forwards, backward, left and then right automatically, but it went BACKWARDS first. We were completely confused and decided to try spinning some of the cords around. After that it went right instead of left. We were too confused to work this one out so we got Mr Phillips to help. He told us to switch two of the cords and it fixed the problem. I was getting excited, the bot was almost done. We completed programming it and we were all ready!

Before the bot fights we customised our bot to look really cool and more efficient in battle. The bot fights began! I was on the controls and was really excited. It was a bit hectic as you would expect with a bunch of year 8 boys. In the end there was no real winner and all that mattered was the truck loads of fun we had. I would recommend this to anybody so if you’re thinking of what to do for your ICT activity choose robotics!

During exam week, for our ICT lessons we had the opportunity to not only learn about the cultural significance of something but also make it. Mexican sugar skulls are made and sold on November 2nd on ‘The Day Of The Dead’ which is a cultural festival held in southern Mexico to honour children that have passed on, they believe that the gates of heaven open up giving families the opportunity to reunite with their loved ones. It was not only wonderful to learn about this cultural event but also having the opportunity to be creative and have some fun during exam week.

Photography is a big part in the world we know today. We capture the moments we love, or maybe the moments of grief.

During Exam week we had the chance to capture friendship moments at school, through the ICT class Photography. We were all provided with cameras, one each, First lesson we were out taking photos with our class, the aim was to capture friendship. The first lesson was all about the moments we could get on the camera.

On Friday was our last lesson, we all were provided with computers all with access to Lightroom. Lightroom is an app that allows us to edit our photos. Whether it be to make more contrast, add more colour or crop the photo, we all had a lot of fun with Lightroom. We all had a go on the app, then it was time to take some more photos.

The second aim was to take photos of a singular object, something that gave Girton character. We were out taking photos for about 20 minutes and we had our last go at Lightroom.

At the end of the class, we were asked to email through any photos we were proud of or any photos we really loved.

Overall photography was a great class to be a part of. I was really proud of some of the photos I took and all my friends took with me, I would definitely do this again.

During exam week 19 year eight students took part in the video making activity.

With the help of Mr Phillips we were able to produce a video on the theme of diversity, which would later then be entered into a draw to win $1000.

With the majority of the group never having touched a camera Mr Phillips was able to teach us some new skills, to help us learn what film making can be about.

Although it was challenging the group was quite pleased with the result.

This activity released our inner film maker and for some, perhaps a career.

For all students out there, I highly recommend to give film making a go.

OUTDOOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

During the first week of this term, my Unit One Outdoor Education class travelled to Wilsons Promontory for our coastal camp. We spent three days hiking and one day surfing. During the hike, the groups saw many different types of wildlife - including gummy sharks, penguins, emus, wombats, and many different types of snakes. Hiking for three days through the beautiful terrain and weather was a really enjoyable experience. We surfed on quite a cold morning, where the fog was so thick we couldn’t even see the ocean. However, this cleared quite quickly and we were able to surf in great conditions.

Overall, we all had a great time and would recommend this camp to everyone. Towards the end of the hike, Mr Gibbons arrived and filmed some amazing footage. We have included some of this footage as a short movie.

COMMUNITY CHOIR GOES WILDE

Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, today dropped in on the Forever Young Rock Choir, who were in full rehearsal for their annual concert at the Ulumbarra Theatre, which will feature a special guest appearance by Wilbur Wilde.

Wilbur Wilde is one of Australia’s most prominent saxophonists as well as being a television personality, radio presenter and singer, rising to prominence with the bands Ol’ 55 and Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons.

Ms Chesters said that the choir was sounding better than ever.

“I love this choir. It is such a great community initiative and I know from talking to the Forever Young members that for many, the weekly rehearsals are the highlight of their week.

“It’s wonderful to see the mutual respect and friendships that form between the choir members and the incredibly talented Girton Grammar Senior String Orchestra and Rock Band, who support the choir. This is Bendigo at its best,” Ms Chesters said.

The theme for the annual Forever Young concert this year is “Born to be Wilde”, with the energy and attitude of choir members reflected in the song repertoire. Wilbur Wilde will sing and play the saxophone with the choir in what promises to be an amazing concert.

“The Girton Grammar Music Department has done phenomenally well to get this choir up and running and now, in its 6th year, the concert is quickly becoming a much loved fixture on Bendigo’s calendar of events,” Ms Chesters said.

“To have such a positive reason to get together each week is wonderful for these active senior citizens.

“The benefits of singing itself are well proven but the social aspect of getting together with like-minded people each week to share morning tea, a chat and some singing is wonderful.

Touring the Junior School was a step back in time, especially for the boarders who told endless tales of slipping out windows, white bread and sugar for lunch and the ghost that ensured everyone went straight to bed after brushing their teeth.

The event continued at the GPO Bar and Restaurant where more than 20 friends reacquainted, some for the first time in 30 years. The group have vowed to keep in touch with one another and to meet again for a 35 year reunion.

EDUCATIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES 2016

Our School’s Pastoral Care system includes my specialised services which include consultancy, counselling and educational assessments for students of all ages in both Junior and Senior School.

The consultancy services involve regular meetings with the Pastoral Care team throughout the School. Staff present student issues for discussion and support plans are made collaboratively.

Counselling Services may be initiated by parents or staff. This generally involves matters which are complex, and possibly requiring Mental Health Care Plans from General Practitioners. Such issues may include stress management, separation, anxiety, depression and grief.

Educational Psychology assessment work may also be initiated by parents, but may also occur following teacher concerns being expressed to their Head of House, LRC staff or following consultation with myself. Early identification of Specific Learning Difficulties can do much to address student skill levels and to assist them achieving their potential.

Should you require further information or support for any aspect of your child’s social or emotional development, learning or behavioural difficulties, please email me directly on [email protected] or on 0419108460.

Interviews can be made by contacting Mrs. Lorraine Ellis (Monday, Thursday, Friday) on 4408 5937., Ms. Michelle Gilkes (Tuesday) on 4408 5909 or Mrs. Rebecca Doherty (Wednesday) on 4408 5951 .

ESLaura-Jane Leach stars as Morticia and is taught by our own Mrs Jennifer Schatzle. Conor Cunningham (Uncle Fester) is one of the team of architects (e+ Acrhitecture) responsible for the design of our much loved Naunton Family Building.

The Addams Family is a thoroughly entertaining, funny show that everyone will enjoy. It incorporates innovative state-of the art digital projection, elaborate sets and costumes.

For more information and some exciting behind-the-scenes rehearsal images go to their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BendigoTheatreCompany/ or www.bendigotheatrecompany.org.

Bendigo’s premiere production of The Addams Family will be playing at Ulumbarra Theatre from Thursday June 30 until Sunday, July 3, with matinee and evening performances.

Tickets are selling fast, so book early to avoid disappointment.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY The Broadway Musical

Bendigo Theatre Company is delighted to present the premier production of the new Broadway musical, The Addams Family at Ulumbarra Theatre during these school holidays.

Bring your whole family!

Many adults will remember the iconic TV show from the 1960s, ‘They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky, The Addams Family’. The next generations will also know The Addams Family from the Hollywood movies.

Familiar characters include, Morticia and Gomez Addams, their children, Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandma, the long-haired Cousin Itt and Lurch, the butler.

The Addams Family is co-directed by Mrs Mandy Ellison, Drama Teacher at Girton Grammar Junior School and involves a number of Girtonians in the cast, orchestra and production crew. Max Beever (9 Frew) is playing the role of Pugsley.

If you were one of the lucky people who saw Bendigo Theatre Company’s 2015 sell out season of Mary Poppins, you may recognise a few of the cast, including of Jason McMurray (Gomez) and Amy McMillan (Wednesday).

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO IN THE HOLIDAYS?

Tickets can be booked through http://www.thecapital.com.au/whats_on/the_addams_family or telephone book via the Capital Theatre Booking office on 5434 6100.

It’s not too late, if you would like to be in the upcoming edition, click this link to complete the online booking form.

Over the next 12 months, via the eLink, we will feature the advertisements periodically, to add value to your commitment to the directory and the School.

Here are two businesses that you will find in the current and new Business Directories.
