A GATSBY GALAAlthough it is consistently ranked among the great works of American literature, The Great Gatsby portrays lives of decadence, excess, lust, materialism (not to mention lack of Christian faith) during the Roaring Twenties. Why make it the focus of a fundraising event for a school the caliber of The Academy?
Indeed Gatsby is such a book, but it is also one critical of its subject matter; in fact, The Academy would consider it an evil book if it were not critical. The reader is able to walk away with a palpable sense of the vanity of Gatsby (in particular) without having to experience it firsthand, though the lesson of misplaced longing still speaks to us today.
As to why we chose the book as a theme, we wanted to have a themed banquet and auction that came from something we study. Few books have parties of any description, but Gatsby came to mind and we decided to have a “gala” with a good purpose – to redeem the dead-end parties that Gatsby could only ever conceive toward a new end: the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Our mission at The Academy of Classical Christian Studies is to assist parents in shaping students’ affections for Truth, Goodness, and Beauty for the benefit of Man and the glory of Jesus Christ. While we can’t change Gatsby’s sad narrative, by God’s grace and through your financial gifts, we are shaping the affections of 416 Oklahoma City students, teaching and training them to love the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. It’s a story worth telling…and celebrating…and supporting.
Thanks for being here tonight to do all three.
