This is a statement that seems pretty obvious!! What we need to remember is that we are indeed the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association. What we have become and what we have accomplished is due to you, the membership, playing a vital role in making the MSHSCA an effective Association responsive to Minnesota coaches concerns and efforts to improve the profession of coaching in Minnesota. Minnesota is a leader in the nation in improving the coaching profession in our state by working collaboratively with the Minnesota State High School League and the Minnesota Legislature. The result of this has given you a voice with the League in pursuing change for your sport and the concerns you have regarding employment issues are heard by our Legislators. We all need to remember this and continue to work hard to continue our efforts to improve the coaching profession in Minnesota. The challenge to each of us is quite simple. What are you going to do to make the MSHSCA a better Association and better at serving the membership? Nothing ever stays the same. We either get better or we get worse. We only need to look around to know that change is inevitable. I believe that there are a number of things you should have on your to do list in this pursuit of improvement and dealing with change. Whether you are a head coach or an assistant coach you need to get your entire staff enrolled as members of The MSHSCA as well as the sport associations for the sport/s you coach. There is strength in numbers and I believe this fact was evident last year with our Legislative friends. I would like to see each of you become active within your sport associations. Start by attending the clinics each sport association sponsors. We all know school districts have been forced to cut back on financial support for clinic attendance but we also believe that professional growth should be a goal of every coach and priority in our profession. You may be able to receive help for some of this from your booster clubs or in some cases staff development funds. Many of our sport associations struggle to find coaches willing to step into the leadership roles. Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year and sportsseasons. This time of the year is very exciting. Every teamis undefeated. The hopes and dreams of every coach, player, teacher, and student are high as all begin this year’s journey. The most important thing to remember, no matter who youare, enjoy the journey!

One of the points discussed this summer at the annualboard of directors summer meeting is how does theMSHSCA remain a strong organization? One of the bestways is for ALL coaches grades 7-12 to be members of theMinnesota State High School Coaches Association. Thenumber of varsity assistant, JV, and Jr High coaches that donot belong to the MSHSCA still surprises me. Benefits ofbeing a member include: $1,000,000 insurance coveragewhich covers you while coaching and in the classroom, team academic awards, Scholarships to student athletes,Coach of the year, Up-to-date website, sports associationrepresentation, newsletter, delegate assembly represents allsports and sections, representation on the MSHSL Board ofDirectors, and a full time Executive Director to handle

questions & concerns. Other benefits include hoteldiscounts and Minnesota Zoo discounts. I strongly urgeALL HEAD Coaches to remind and urge coaches in theirprograms to join the MSHSCA. Explain the benefits andget your coaches at all levels to join and get involved!

Along the same thought of getting involved, theMSHSCA has a number of Delegate Assembly openingsthat need to be filled. The Delegate Assembly providesrepresentation for coaches in all sections in every sport. Thedelegate sections are based on the MSHSL administrativesections. One boys sports delegate and one girls sportsdelegate from each class A and AA section with an at largedelegate for each A and AA section. Sections in need ofrepresentation at the Delegate Assembly: Girls sports-1AA,3AA, 5AA, 6AA, 8AA. Boys sports- 3AA. At LargeDelegates- 7A, 8A, 3AA, 7AA. Check with your AD if youare unsure which section administers your programs. Noexperience necessary, just the willingness to get involved!

Whether you sport is fall, winter or spring, good luck toall coaches!

MINNESOTA PREP COACH6

Welcome to a new yearand new opportunities towork with the young menand women who make upthe rosters of our sportsteams. Coaching is indeeda wonderful calling and isreserved for those men andwomen who have dedicatedtheir lives and passions into

providing opportunities for our student athletes to learn andgrow through the sports they participate in. Thank you foryour commitment and your dedication. I hope that each ofyou are able to look back at the end of the year andappreciate the great opportunity you have been given tomake a difference in the lives of so many.

The MSHSCA has just finished one of the mostmemorable years in their history. This past fall a committeewas convened to draft a Coaches Bill of Rights. Thefinished draft, as passed by the Spring Delegate Assembly, appears in this Prep Coach. I would like to remind you thatalong with the Bill of Rights we have also asked ourcoaches to adhere to our adopted Code of Ethics which alsoappears in this issue. The second major change for ourcoaching profession is the passage of the addition to the“Coaches Bill” stating that “The existence of parentcomplaints must not be the sole reason for a board to norenew a coaching contract”. It is my belief that this requiresall of our coaches to be even more vigilant incommunicating to all parents of the athletes involved inyour programs the expectations of your program for allparties involved, athletes, parents and coaching staff.Coaches live in glass houses whether they like it or not andbeing up front and honest with parents and athletes issomething that must be taken very seriously each and everyday.

As we gear up for our new year the Executive Board hasalready met to set the agenda for this coming year. Lastyear was an effort to improve the work environment for thecoaching profession. This year our effort will be directed atattempting get all of our coaches in the state on board asmembers of the MSHSCA. We are asking all head coachesto make a very concerted effort to get all of their assistantsenrolled. I am always sad when a coach is selected as anassistant coach of the year but is ineligible to receive theaward due to the fact that they are not members of theMSHSCA.

We are also asking our membership to be vigilant in

making sure that MSHSCA benefits be granted to coachesonly. Unfortunately we have had a number of non schoolcoaches applying for membership on line for the solepurpose of getting a membership card to be used foradmission into games. If you go to the home page you willnow see a warning that any person who tries to get amembership card that is not qualified for membership willbe denied and the money will not be refunded. TheMSHSCA has no affiliation with any club, traveling, JO, orAAU coaches. It is indeed unfortunate that a few choose tojeopardize the ability of school coaches to use theirmembership card for admission into games for the purposeof scouting by unjustifiably asking for a membership card.Thank you for your assistance in this effort.

The MSHSCA joined with the MSHSL and MN I AAAassociations to put on the first WHY conference. I had thehonor of attending the first of three sessions and it wasgreat. Dr. Jeff Duke and the Top 20 group provided a greatmessage and real thought provoking questions into why Icoach the way I do. I would like to extend a huge thank youto Jody Redman and the MSHSL for all their hard work andorganization in making this happen. I hope all who attendedenjoyed the experience and found this conference a goodway to take care of your recertification. We hope this canturn into an annual event for coaches as we all strive tobecome the best and most effective coaches we can be.

I would like to ask that each of your who are awardwinners from the past year, Championship Coaches, Coachof the Year, Assistant Coach of the year and 25 year coachesto attend the Annual Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet tobe held on Saturday October 12 at the Crowne Plaza RiverFront in St. Paul. The MSHSCA is very proud of the awardsprogram and see this as a way to reach out to the MSHSCAmembership with a very special evening. We are inductingsix outstanding individuals into our Hall of Fame and westrongly encourage coaches who competed against theseinductees to attend the banquet and share the night and thememories.

I want to wish you all the best as you move into yournew school and athletic years. I hope each of you enjoysuccess and a fulfillment through the year that can onlycome from working with the great young people we arefortunate to work with. You are very important to each andevery athlete you work with and the leadership you givethem can never been underestimated. You are a powerfulinfluence on your athletes and play a very significant rolein their futures.

This report indicates that there are active life membersthat are forgetting to renew their sport association dues andinsurance coverage.

The large decrease is a clean-up process. We receivedmany contacts this year from spouses of deceased coaches. Some out of state addresses are no longer correct and wereeliminated by Forum Printing as “not valid”. This happens inSeptember of every year.

within your sport associations. Consider accepting a positionas a section rep. Consider serving as one to the associationsofficers. Consider volunteering to help with clinics. Look atthese options as opportunities. I would also invite you toconsider serving as a delegate to the MSHSCA DelegateAssembly. It meets twice a year and is the legislative arm ofour Association where concerns and requests are broughtforward to be discussed and acted on by the DelegateAssembly.

I also believe that it is important for every member of theMSHSCA to take the time to reflect on the profession ofcoaching. Look back on how it was and look at today andthe challenges we are all facing. As I mentioned earlier inthis article nothing ever stays the same. One of the concernsI have is the growth of Club Teams, AAU teams, SportsAcademies and certainly the Junior Hockey Leagues. Thereare almost no sports that are not impacted or will soon beimpacted by the drain of our most talented athletes to teamsoutside the high school arena. We all need to take the time tounderstand how this is going to impact our high schoolathletes in the future. High School athletics is an experiencethat has been a very important experience in the lives ofthousands and thousands of high school students. We all needto stand up for the importance of high school sportsopportunities and ensure that the great opportunities we haveall enjoyed and current high school athletes are enjoying willalways be there for those who follow. It’s been a hot, steamy start for the fall sports andbeginning of a new school year. Growing up in Iowa, I usedto love this kind of weather. Now, I long for the 40-degreespring days on the softball field. It is surely going to cool offand I look forward to watching all the student/athletesperform in their fall and winter activities.

Congratulations to the 2013 MNHSSCA Hall of Famecandidates who were inducted June 9 at the Senior All-Starbanquet. The careers and accomplishments of coach BobHorner, St. Paul Johnson; Coach Mary Beth Holmberg,Morris Area were celebrated along with players BrianaHassett, Eastview; Heidi Carls, Minnewaska Area; Kim Ibs,Buffalo; and Laura Medved, Totino Grace.

The Senior All-Star Series was again a very fun andexciting event as we honored the best 72 senior softballplayers from around the state. The event was held SundayJune 9 at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

Congratulations to the Elk River Elks head coach StaceySheetz, staff and players for winning the Class AAA statetitle. Congratulations to New Ulm Eagles head coach KristiAndersen-Loose, staff and players for winning the Class AAstate title. Congratulations to the Blooming Prairie AwesomeBlossoms head coach Alison Mach, staff and players forwinning the Class A state title.

It was another enjoyable tournament for players and fansalike as 33 games were played over two days. With as manyas six ball games going on at any given time you really hadto have your head on a swivel to take it all in. I know I spentover 20 hours at beautiful Caswell Park in North Mankatowatching the games. While there were some strong pitchingperformances, overall I thought the batters had the upper handas the clutch hitting, well-placed bunts and power hitting tookover several games. There was one defensive performance, however, that those in attendance will be talking about as longas the game of softball is played in the state of Minnesota.Elk River Freshman outfielder Jayme Langbehn captured thenational spotlight after she stole two game-winning PriorLake home runs in the Class AAA championship game. Shewould also score her team’s game-winning run in the top ofthe eighth inning. Langbehn’s first game-saving catch camein the bottom of the sixth inning, with the game tied 3-3. Witheach team going scoreless in the seventh inning, the game

went to extra innings. In the top of the eighth inningLangbehn beat a laser throw to the plate to score the Elks go-ahead run. As if that wasn’t enough, Langbehn snagged asecond would-be home run driven deep to center fieldpreserving the win and championship for the Elks over PriorLake. AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING! Later thatFriday night, the young centerfielder’s accomplishments wereselected for ESPN’s Top Ten Plays of the Day. Yahoo Sportslater picked up the story and Jayme was highlighted in thePrep Spotlight in Sports Illustrated. Congratulations, Jayme! You really rose to the occasion when needed the most.

The proposal for a four-class system in softball has beengiven to the MSHSL and will be discussed at their Octobermeeting. Be on the lookout for more information on that in anupcoming issue of Prep Coach.

Remember to make a positive difference in a child’s lifethis school year. Sometimes, unfortunately, we’re the onlyones they that will.

Hello Members-

Hope this finds your school year off to a great start. TheBoard just completed our August Retreat and have manygoals to focus on for the year. They are as follows:1) footballscheduling; 2) placement of schools based on a “successfactor;” 3) home school student eligibility; 4) Bylaw 208-Nonschool Competition and Training review; 5) educationalinitiatives for administrators, coaches and officials; 6) classesfor activities and placement; 7) licensure of coaches; and 8)development of a policy for transgender athletes.

At the Board meeting Board Member Bob Grey ofMontivedo offered a Reflection that included a poem he hashad for a while that reads:

“Just a Little Boy” and reads(I too have heard it as“Just a little girl”)He stands at the plate with his heart pounding fast. The bases are loaded. The die has been cast.Mom and Dad cannot help him. He stands all alone.A hit at this moment would send his team home. The ball nears the plate. He swings and misses.

We are working on the best method for passing a proposalthat will increase the medals given out at the State Meet.

We are examining the possibility of changing to a threeclass system. Initially we need to address how to maintainthe level of participating schools to meet the three classrequirement; then we will address State Meet Qualifiers.

With all of these items, your input will be invaluable. Please make sure you are receiving e-mail communicationsfrom the Association; if not send me a short e-mail and wewill get you on our distribution list.

Finally, please encourage your assistant coaches to jointhe organization. In addition to the protection they receive,we want to be able to recognize them for their hard work andinfluence on the lives of our athletes. We have too fewcandidates for Section and State Assistant Coach of the Yearawards; in fact many of our sections to not give out theaward. We need to improve our appreciation and recognitionof our assistants- thank you for your help!

Good luck with your season, stay cool and keep hydrated!

There’s a groan from the crowd with some boos andhisses.A thoughtless voice cries, “Strike out the bum.”Tears fill his eyes. The game’s no longer fun.Remember, he’s just a little boy who stands all alone. So, open your heart and give him a break. For it’s moments like this a man you can make.Keep this in mind when you hear someone forget. He’s just a little boy and not a man yet.

Often in our society of competition with youth athleticswe forget that they are Just little boys and girls..not quite anadult yet!

I also had the privilege of attending the “Why we coachconference” held at Bethel University on August 1st. What anamazing experience. Our staff at the MSHSL are right ontarget with the message they are sending with the newcoaches education piece. I thought the message that keyspeaker Dr. Jeff Duke from the University of Central Floridawas great. He spoke about How do we define success? Anda goal of our coaching may be to help athletes gain masteryover their emotions so they can help rather then hurt theircompetitive performance…powerful message!

Other speakers included Willow Sweeny and Tom Codywith the Top 20 Trainings. Again some more greatinformation! We also took time in breakout sessions toreview the new coaches education curriculum. All in all agreat day of learning!!

Looking forward to serving you another year!

Delegates,

The National Federation of State High SchoolAssociations recently report that for the 24th consecutive yearhigh school athletics participation increased in the UnitedStates. With your help, a lot of great things have happenedin the past year to increase the support provided to coaches.Billy Graham once said that a coach could impact more livesin a year than most can in a lifetime. He then asked theimportant question, “Who is coaching the coach?”

This summer the Minnesota State High School CoachesAssociation partnered with the Minnesota InterscholasticAthletic Administrators Association and the Minnesota StateHigh School League to host the WHY WE PLAY coaches’conference at Bethel University and Grand Rapids HighSchool. It was great to see over seven hundred coaches fromacross the state talk about the purpose of educational athleticsand further our skills as high school coaches. Although theconference was only a one-day event for participants, it beganwhat should be a career-long process for all of us:understanding our purpose as transformational coaches andbeing intentional in our efforts to build strong relationshipsand make a positive difference in young people’s lives. Thisunique journey for each of us starts with identifying ourpurpose.

As a result of our association’s efforts, one simple, yetpowerful, sentence was added to state law this past year toprotect coaches. As of July 1st, 2013 “The existence of parentcomplaints must not be the sole reason for a board to notrenew a coaching contract.” The vast majority of parents areour allies who lend us their most prized position each day sowe can coach and kids can play. However, we have also seenthe unfortunate side of parental pressures and expectationson coaches. While the greatest power of the new billprotecting coaches may be symbolic, it sends a powerfulmessage that we must be able to coach our student-athleteswithout the fear of losing our jobs due to a parent being upsetabout game strategy, positions played, or playing time.

As delegates of the Minnesota State High School CoachesAssociation, it is our job to support coaches andcommunication is a key part of this effort. Please let thecoaches in your sport and school know the many benefits ofmembership and the good things our association is doing forcoaches. With your help, we will continue to work hard tocreate a culture promoting the value of participation in highschool athletics and promote high school coaches in

Minnesota.

Finally, congratulations are in order to Tink Larson ofWaseca who will receive this year’s Steve Kerzie Award atour fall Hall of Fame banquet. The Steve Kerzie Award isgiven to recognize and acknowledge delegate service to ourassociation; Tink is a great choice as this year’s recipient.Tink has been a delegate so long, he cannot even rememberhow long it has been! Congratulations, Tink.

Have a great fall season!

The Advisory Board has been working on a coupledifferent initiatives based on the feedback from themembership. The first initiative being pursued is increasingour official roster size from 18 to 20. What we faced in 2013with our condensed schedules, it is a good time to talk to yourathletic director to let them know your feelings about this.We hope for a decision on this in October and hopefully ourrosters will be expanded to 20 in 2014. Additionally, issuesdealing with arm safety and the DH/pitching rule. Let yourvoice and opinion be heard. The Advisory Board will alsobe working on a four class proposal. More information willbe provided at the fall clinic about this process. Pleasecontact one of the advisory board members with feedback, questions, or other suggestions.

Finally, you are encouraged to look at the Minnesota StateHigh School Baseball records that have been compiled byTink Larson under the records tab on www.mshsbca.org.. The importance of a close working relationship between college and university coaches and high school coaches in Minnesota remains obvious as institutions ofhigher learning have opted to continue with the Associate Membership Package offered by the MSHSCA during the 2012-2013 school year.

As part of the arrangement, college coaches can use the MSHSCA membership card to obtain admission to high school events and in turn the high school coach canuse the card to attend college most college games. Restrictions apply for college and high school playoff and post season tournament games.

Dear Coaches;

Welcome back to school! Where did thesummer go? It seems as fewer children live at my

house, and those left are working and playing on their ownthat there should be more time! It just never seems to workout that way. Hopefully all of you are excited for theupcoming season and ready to inspire a new group of youngathletes.

The clinic committee met in July and is finalizing plansfor the fall clinic. The clinic will be held on Oct. 3 and 4 atPark High School in Cottage Grove. There have been manyrequests to repeat a format where our own coaches share theirknowledge, skills and drills. So...that is the plan. Throughvolunteers and nominations, we have assembled a number ofour own members to lead sessions at the clinic. There will beintroductory and advance sessions for floor and bars as wellas separate vault sessions for flipping and twisting. A generalsession with meet organization as well as an all level beamsession are on the agenda. Thursday night, we will kick offthe gathering with a presentation from Top 20. Please planon registering early as that helps us plan for t- shirts, foodand binders.

Remember to check your coaches clip board for upcomingtrainings and requirements. All members of coaching staffsneed to have a clipboard and current concussion training. Allhigh school (10-12) coaches must complete the online rulemeeting segment. It is not a bad thing for other members ofyour staff to complete the rules meeting. It is free and helpscoaches see their coaching through the eyes of a judge.

When you are at the MN State High School CoachesAssociation site, take time to fill out the Liberty Mutualsurvey. Our coaches association earns a small stipend foreach member that fills out the questionnaire. There is noobligation to buy anything and our checkbook could use thefunds.

Have a great September, hope to see everyone at Park inOctober.

DEAN URDAHL TO RECEIVEHAUN AWARDGeorge Haun was the founding

father of the MSHSCA and wasknown for his leadership skills. It isonly appropriate the this year’srecipient displays the same adeptnessfor leadership.

During the October 12th Hall ofFame Banquet, the MSHSCA willrecognize Dean Urdahl as the 2013 Haun Award recipient.Urdahl has displayed skills as both a coach and a Minnesotalegisilator. He was one of the driving forces that helped passthe MSHSCA Bill of Rights last spring.

Urdahl is a graduate of Litchfield High School and StCloud State University. He taught History for 35 years at NewLondon - Spicer High School.

Dean coached Boys and Girls Cross Country for 29 yearsat New London - Spicer and started the girls program at thatschool. During his tenure, he coached 72 West Central AllConference runners. 14 All State runners, 16 conferencechampionship teams, 17 sub-section titles, eightsection champions and 18 team state meet appearances.

At the state meet, his team’s best finishes were threeconsecutive girls state titles in 2000,2001 and 2002. The girlsalso placed third in 1985 and second in 1997. His highestboys finish was fourth at the state meet. The hallmark of theNL-S teams was consistency and balance.

Urdahl was honored as a Section 6A Girls Cross CountryCoach of the Year and has spoken several times at coachingclinics. He retired from coaching in 2005.

Dean was elected to the Minnesota House ofRepresentatives in 2002. During his years of service he hasmaintained his interest in the coaching profession inMinnesota. This led to two laws passed under Urdahl’sauthorship that impact coaches. The first established aprocess for dismissal by which coaches were given the rightof a hearing and to know the reasons for dismissal. Thesecond law passed in 2013, stipulates that parental complaintsmust not be the sole reason for a Board of Education to notrenew a coaching contract.

He has been chair of the House Legacy Funding Divisionand was instrumental in the passage of the State CapitalPreservation legislation. He is also the author of sevenpublished books dealing with history and biographies.

Dean and his wife, Karen, live in Acton Township nearLitchfield. They have three grown sons, one of whom is asuccessful high school coach and Activities Director.

MINNESOTA PREP COACH36

WHY DO WE PLAY? For many in our sports culturethere is only one answer to this question—we play to WIN. Iam going to suggest that there is some value in this answer.

Do we play so a high school student can develop physicalskills, score 1000 points, and get a college scholarship—YES.

Do we play so a team can win a conference title—YES.

Do we play so high school students can have theexperience of getting to and winning a state championship—YES.

But these reasons are not enough. The studentsparticipating in our programs need and deserve more. Asimportant as our culture makes winning, scholarships andawards, these types of achievements don’t sustain a student’slife and they don’t develop their human potential.

WHY DO WE PLAY—we play to give students MORE.

When we are intentional, the MORE leads to thedevelopment of important life skills like:

being responsible;

striving for excellence;

learning from mistakes and failure;

helping others succeed;

overcoming adversity; and

being a contributing member of a team.

MORE—how do we intentionally provide students withmore than physical development and become intentionalabout their growth as human beings? In the book InSideOutCoaching, Joe Ehrmann poses four questions that provide uswith a pathway to become an intentional coach.

Why do I coach?

As a coach, our role in education-based athletics is toestablish a clear coaching purpose. The purpose of the highschool sports experience—WHY WE PLAY, is often onlydefined by the outcome. Many of us sit with our team at thebeginning of the season to set goals. Most often these goalsare only skill and performance based with absolutely nodiscussion or time spent on the students’ growth as humanbeings. They include reaching certain physical benchmarkswithin an aspect of a sport; winning a conference title; orgetting to and ultimately winning a state championship.Goals are important because they give us direction—theygive us a destination. They also can get in the way of ourpurpose.

When we don’t clearly define and understand our purpose, our highest goal—winning— becomes our purpose and we

will do anything to achieve it. It is our responsibility tounderstand the difference between a GOAL and a PURPOSE.In education-based athletics the coach’s purpose is the humangrowth and development of every student on their team.

Why do I coach the way I do?

To understand why we coach the way we do, we have tolook at our coaching philosophy. Are we transactional ortransformational? Joe Ehrmann defines a transactionalcoach as one who uses players as a tool to meet personalneeds for validation, status, and identity. He defines atransformational coach as a person who is other-centered,who uses their power and platform to nurture and transformplayers.

Our coaching philosophy was born from our personalexperiences with those who coached us and from those whomwe have coached with. Good or bad, transformational ortransactional, it is what we know. To understand why wecoach the way we do, we must journey inside of ourselvesand examine who we are emulating and why. We must askthe question are we damaging our students or promoting theirhuman growth and development. We must look at our ownnarrative and then clearly define our coaching purpose.

How does it feel to be coached by me?

Our role as coaches in education-based athletics is tounderstand how it feels to be coached by us. Do we providea safe place for students to really show up as themselves—aplace of belonging? Do our actions promote growth or limitit? One of the most important things a coach can do for theirstudents is to create a safe place where connection andbelonging occurs and mistakes and failure are welcomed andexpected.

Failure is a significant part of what we want students toexperience in our program. We want students to fail as thatis the only way they will experience something new. Whena student fails or makes a mistake and the coach screams, yells and belittles the student, they will respond by stayingtucked safely inside their comfort zone and do only what theyknow, they will not take risks, and will not put themselves ina place where growth can occur. If we want students tostretch themselves, we must create a safe and trust-filledenvironment.

How do I define success?

Our role as coaches in education-based athletics is todefine success by more than the outcome on the scoreboard. We plan, we prepare, and we play to win but it is not ourpurpose. We provide students with the opportunity to bechallenged, to develop and to grow through their participationon a team. This involvement is the place where the potentialfor growth lives, but only if we are aware of our purpose and

Becoming Intentional

We have to define ourpurpose. We have to focus onmore than surface leveloutcomes. We have to shinethe light brightly on the realreasons WHY WE PLAY—togrow the students whoparticipate. We have tobecome coaches who areintentionally developing thestudent’s potential andproviding them with skills thatwill sustain them for alifetime.

FALL CLINIC ATTENDEES URGED TO USEELECTRONIC MEMBERSHIP

Coaches who plan to attend clinics this Fall are urged to obtain theirmembership in advance using the electronic membership opportunity.

Due to location of many of the clinics, the MSHSCA may not be able tohook up to provide membership cards using their computer. As a result, it willsimplify things if membership is obtained prior to clinics to eliminate a lotof potential confusion regarding the reception of membership cards at thesite of the clinic.

The weather has finally broken and weare seeing some relief from the heat ofAugust. Like most of us odd Nordiccoaches, when the weather starts to becomeunbearable we begin to think of the wintermonths. The section 8 coaches have beenbusy working out our schedules for theupcoming season in a way to escape the heatof the past weeks. As we look forward to thecoming season we have a few items we needto keep in the back of our minds.

First off our proposal that we submittedto the MSHSL to change our state meetqualification from its current format oftaking the top team of seven and the nexteightindividuals to the top two teams and thenext five individuals failed by one vote at theJune MSHSL Board of Directorsmeeting. We must take a look at our optionsand see if we would like to propose otherchanges to our state meet or sport ingeneral. New proposals from ourmembership must be submitted in writing atleast two weeks prior to our fall meeting to

be considered and voted upon to recommendchanges to the MSHSL Board of Directors.

Our Fall meeting will take placeon October 26th at the Vasaloppet TrainingCenter in Mora. We will plan on holding avendor expo again this year prior to andduring our meeting to build betterrelationships within the ski community. Atour meeting I have a few agenda items thatI would like to make sure people arethinking about as we move into the 2013-2014 season. I would like to visit the bylawchanges dealing with voting procedures forproposals being submitted to the MSHSL. Iwould like to discuss and act upon how toproperly handle “excess” money in our bankaccount. I would like to come up with a wayto provide a meaningful and cost effectivestate meet banquet and allows for morerecognition and better value for ourathletes.

Please note that I have changed my emailaddress as I am pursuing a differentcareer. My new email addressis [email protected]. Feel free tocontact me we any suggestions or newproposals for consideration at the fallmeeting.

We are all off and running with the fall girls tennis season. We want to continue to make sure that all of us are aware ofthe items that pertain to the current season and topics that arein the discussion with the Executive Board.

MEMBERSHIP: join herehttp://www.mshsca.org/membapp.htm

Tennis coaches don’t forget to renew your membershipbefore your season begins. We thank those who joined lastyear and were a part of the association. We encourage you tojoin again and we would love to have those who were non-members last year become part of the coaches association. We want our association to grow. This will give us a strongervoice.

Lifetime members: You still need to join the sportsassociation to be included in coach of the year and academichonors for your team. An area we really want to grow isgetting assistant coaches to join and become involved withinour association. Please encourage your assistant coaches tobecome members.

To join the coaches association, please go tohttp://www.mshsca.org/membapp.htm; to check out thebenefits of being a member go to http://www.mshsca.org andclick on Membership Benefits, on the left column.

RANKINGS: Please send any ranking information toRick Engelstad.

If you would like to nominate an outstandingindividual/team for the tennis poll. Rick Engelstad:[email protected] or [email protected]

Rankings will be released weekly on Mondays. Allinformation needs to be submitted by 6:00 pm on Sundays.

IMPORTANT FALL DATES: Please mark theseimportant dates on your calendar

10/1/13 Deadline for becoming MSHSCA Member(girls tennis)

10/4/13 Deadline for submitting Girls Academic Team& Individual Award Applications

TBA Girls State Coach of the Year On-line Voting(Head Coach Members only)

ACADEMIC AWARDS

The deadline for academic awards, team and individual,is Friday, October 4th. Forms will be posted soon and youwill be alerted about them. Submission of team/playerinformation for academic awards will be done on- line thisfall.

SEEDING: This is something that our members wanted tosee at the state tournament. Yet, in our first year our coacheswho had the opportunity to participate in the process did not. There was about a 50% involvement. In order for this to bea true seeding process all coaches who have a team (AA) orindividual (A & AA) who qualify need to participate. Moreinformation will be provided as the season moves towardSection Tournament play.

LINE-UPS: The process is going to be the same this year. One major point to realize is that line-up one is your four bestsingles players and then the other two line-ups are built fromthat line-up.

In the works for next year, we are hoping to tweak thisprocess a little. We want to add a 4th column. Coaches wouldrank their top seven singles players. All three line-ups wouldthen be built off of this. This would give coaches a little moreflexibility.

ONLINE RULES TEST: (future) We would keep it verysimple. Most likely it will deal with line-ups, seeding, andother major rules that coaches need to know.

NAME CHANGES : You may have noticed a new name,we will be gradually changing our association’s name to theMinnesota Tennis Coaches Association (MTCA) from theMinnesota State High School Tennis Coaches Association(MSHSCTCA). Our membership is open to any individualwho coaches tennis in grades 7 through 12, or any individualwho is interested in high school tennis. Our parentorganization is the Minnesota State High School CoachesAssociation. Founded in the early 1970’s, the purpose of thetennis coaches association and our parent organization is topromote athletic activities for girls’ and boys’ in the state ofMinnesota.

Good Luck to the Girls’ Tennis coaches as you movetowards your post season play!

As another summer winds down, our adapted coaches andathletes find themselves preparing for another exciting andfun filled adapted soccer season. Few of our schools startsoccer preparations in August, as most other fall sports do,rather they start after the beginning of the new school yearand have their first contests near the end of September. Theadapted soccer state tournament for both the PI and CIdivision will once again be held at Stillwater High School, onNovember 15 & 16.

Since the last issue of Minnesota Prep Coach in May, newstate champions were crowned in adapted softball. Theadapted softball state tournament was held on May 31 & June1 at Coon Rapids High School, and we had a great turnout. Inthe PI division, Robbinsdale-Hopkins-Mound Westonkaclaimed their fifth consecutive adapted softball title, with a10-5 win over Dakota United. In the CI Division, Burnsville-Farmington-Lakeville claimed their fist adapted softball statechampionship with a 12-5 win over North Suburban.Congratulations to both of these programs for fantastic

seasons!

One of my most important goals for this upcoming year isto continue to increase our number of member coaches fromadapted athletics. With the number of coaches currentlyworking in adapted athletics, there certainly is room toimprove our membership numbers and I will continue toencourage all of our coaches to join and support ourorganization. We are still looking for more coaches in getinvolved in leadership roles within our association, as wehave been without a president for the last year, and have beenwithout a vice president for more than two years. These areimportant positions to fill, so we can continue to maintain ahigh quality professional organization. Please contact me assoon as possible, if you would like to help our coaches’association and volunteer for one of these positions.

Good luck to everyone this fall, and I hope everyone isable to enjoy a safe, fun filled soccer season!

ADAPTED UPDATES

* Coaches, by personality andprofession, often use inspirationalmessages, themes, slogans, quotatations, and personal experienceto teach and motivate players to aspireand suceed to greater heights. The greatVince Lombardi authored many that wesee in locker rooms across our greatstate. Some that come to mind, “ Thespirit, the will to win and the will toexcell.... these are things that willendure and these are the qualities thatare so much more important than anyof the events themselves”, and “Winning is not a sometime thing, it isan all the time thing. You don’t dothings right once in a while.... you do

them right all the time.” Whether youuse those of the great, or some of yourvery own, the message sent can bepowerful and meaningful. One I hopewe will never need to use is “ I wish Ihad done more”.

As we coach and teach our players;our teams, let us strive to never givethem less than all we have. Not all ofour players are blessed with great skills. Not all of them are ‘ recruits’. Not all ofthem come from stable environments orprivileged homes. Not all of them havethe advantage of equal benefits orcircumstances. But they are our players. They come with hope and dream... theycome to small town and large: theycome to learn and play football. Ourresponsibility is to them all. We have aspecial and unique opportunity to teachthe the game and so much more.Football remains a great metaphor ofand for life. Let us not lose sight ofwhat we can and should model andteach. When this Fall is done; when allof our Falls are done, let’s never say

with regret,... “I wish I had done more”.Congratulations to the many who

teach the ‘game within the game’. ToMark Froehling, the MFCA 2013Power of Influence recipient, to JodyRedman and the MSHSL for theoutstanding “Why We Coach; effortand conference, to Beau LaBore for hiscontinuous efforts on behalf ofcommunity service for all our schools,to Jeff Weiland for organizing andhosting the ‘Everything But x’s and o’sclinic, and to the legions of you who, daily, make the effort to help kids be allthey can be, now and in the life ahead.

Football coaches; we share a greatfraternity, a great calling. A great game.Let us be proud of our calling andcontinue to model all that is goodabout sport. To our players, our school, our community.

MINNESOTA PREP COACH 43

It has been quite a year for the MnIAAA. In early 2013 agroup of A.D.s from across the state met to evaluate ourStrategic Plan. Over the course of two days, the group setforth a revised plan of action. It is called the MnIAAAStrategic Plan, 2nd Edition.

As rewarding as it was, the critical time is what takes placethis next year. Past experience tells us that if theimplementation plan is not set and action takes place directlyrelated to the new initiatives within the first year, this productwill become like so many other strategic plans - a dustcollector, and on a good day, a paperweight.

The main focus of the plan is to cement and sustainalready successful programs andinitiatives – our mentorship program is agood example. We have added newcommittees which will help gain greatermembership participation, which as weknow, is the strength to anyorganization. New committees comingdirectly from the plan are:Professional Development, FinanceSteering, Web site, and SummerInstitute Liaison. These will help bolsterthe current committees: Hall of Fame,LTI, Region Representatives, MSHSLAdvisory, Award of Merit.

Each committee will be looking atdeveloping and communicating theirone, three and five year plans. Thesewill be reported to the regionrepresentatives at the fall meeting inOctober. I am confident that our currentleaders within the organization willreport back with many professionallysound initiatives in their plans. I lookforward to hearing about their work asall of us strive to keep Minnesota as oneof the top professional A.D. associationsin the country. We are well respectedaround the country and otherassociations often look to us for thelatest ideas in high school leadership. Afew great examples of that are the WhyWe play Coaching Conferencecollaboration with the MSHSCA, theMSHSL and the MnIAAA, the 1st ever

Minnetonka Summer Institute of Professional Developmentfor A.D.s, principals and superintendents, and the fabulousstate convention we sponsor every year in St. Cloud.

Speaking for my A.D. brothers and sisters, thank youcoaches for your time, energy, skill and most of all, passionyou bring to our Minnesota kids on a daily basis. My hope isthat each and every coach is in tune with their purpose ofcoaching. As A.D.s, we want all coaches to remember thatwinning is a goal and not a purpose; and if you have nopurpose, winning will become your goal. When winning isyour purpose, you will eventually do whatever it takes to win.On the surface, that may not seem so bad; but in thedevelopment of people, it is harmful. I wish all coaches goodluck as we head into another year – Let’s always keep thegame fun.

Greetings and welcome to another school year. By the timeyou read this, we will be a week or two into the year.

Last month, at Bethel University, the MSHSCA and theMSHSL co-sponsored the conference Why We Play. I went, tobe honest, to represent the coaches association and to getsome CEUs. Generally I am skeptical about in-services orconferences such as this, but I was pleasantly surprised andfound it a great way to get my mind prepared for crosscountry and the school year. If this conference is held againnext year, I strongly encourage you to consider attending.

There were four basic questions that the speakers at theconference asked coaches to consider. Why do I coach? Whydo I coach the way I do? What does it feel like to be coachedby you? How do you define success? The third question mademe think and reflect the most, both as it relates to coachingand teaching. Don’t get me wrong as I posit these fourquestions; if we are expecting win a meet and don’t, I’m nothappy. If we are projected finish third and don’t, I’m notpleased (unless, of course, we finish first or second). However, in both cases, if the kids did the best they could, Iam pleased.

Again, if this conference is offered next year, considertaking advantage of it.

Last May saw another great weekend of true team trackand field at Stillwater High School. Congratulations to thefollowing schools for winning state true team titles: WinonaCotter boys, Esko girls, Sartell girls, Totino-Grace boys,Lakeville South girls, and Wayzata boys. The 2014 meet willbe at Stillwater.

Keep in mind the Coaches Association track and fieldclinic is scheduled for January 31 and February 1, 2014.Increasingly there are activities going on during the eveningof the Thursday before, so keep that in mind while planning. The true team meeting, as well as the coaches social, isscheduled for Thursday night, January 30. As always, thanksto Buzz, Craig, and Dave for their work.

Finally, if you have suggestions for the MSHSL state meet, there is a form on the association website to fill out and sendto me. If you have true team suggestions, please email mewith your suggestion along with your rationale.

See you at the clinic or before.

The 2013-14 school year brings another excitingswimming and diving season! Minnesota has many amazingfemale swimmers and divers competing for their local highschool teams, including a few returning athletes who setMinnesota all-time records at last year’s state meet. Therehave been a few rule changes for us. Please be sure to reviewthese to ensure a successful season. This year’s season willcome to completion November 18-20 at the University ofMinnesota Aquatic Center. It’s been a long time since wehave had a Monday-Wednesday state meet.

It is hard to believe, but this will be the 10th year that thecoaches association will be hosting the True Team sectionand state meets. This has been an extremely positiveexperience for participating teams. Swimming and diving ismostly an individual sport with team scoring, but the TrueTeam meet brings us to as close of a team concept aspossible. Information about this year’s meet can be foundat http://www.pantherboosters.org/true. The True Teamsection meets will be held Saturday, October 12th, and the Aand AA True Team state meet will be on October 19th at theUniversity of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

As high school coaches, we are so much more than justa person on a pool deck doling out practice sets. Studentathletes have so many things going on in their lives todaywith many pressures to sway them down the wrong path. Itis always exciting to get the season’s roster to have theopportunity to work positively with athletes who havecommitted to our programs. In a very short timeframe, wetry to do a lot. Even little things can make a big impact onstudent athlete’s lives.

I quickly came to realize in my early days of coachingthat my job is to teach hard work, dedication, andcommitment. When an athlete says to me, “Coach, I’mhappy I came out for the team,” my goal is complete. Mypersonal favorite is when a former athlete comes back manyyears later and says, “You taught me this, and I haveremembered it since.” I am privileged to have had so manygreat athletes and to have worked with so many great coachesover the years.

The 2013-14 season has a lot to live up to after such anexciting 2012-13 season. We all play a role in theoutstanding atmosphere of Minnesota swimming anddiving! Thank you to all high school coaches for everythingyou do. Good luck this season, and I look forward to seeingall of you on deck!

My name is Andrew Lecker and I have been the headGirls Lacrosse coach at Cretin Derham Hall for the past eightseasons. As a coach I can’t believe how the game has grownin Minnesota let alone the country at the youth, high schooland college level. There are so many opportunities for youngladies to play the game they love.

This past year, the Girls and Boys Coaches Associationalong with STB Banquets was able to host the first annualMSHSL State Tournament Banquet, at Crowne Plaza in StPaul recognizing the 16 state qualifiers from around ourstate, our All- State participants and Player of the year in bothboys and girls. This event was a fun end of the yearcelebration of MN Lacrosse.

In addition to the banquet, the girl’s Coaches Associationalso held their first annual All State game. This eventshowcased the top 44 players our state had to offer. If youhappened to attend you could not argue that our state isstarting to turn out some talented players. It was a fantasticevent and our girls’ Coaches Association plans to bring itback in 2014!

In closing, Lacrosse is a growing sport in our community

and these events make it fun for our players and coaches tobe apart off. If you want to get involved please contact medirectly. Andrew Lecker at [email protected]. We are alwayslooking to make these types of events bigger and better withyour support.

It sure seems like the summer was really short, but soccerseason has arrived and we are excited about playing again. Our 23rd Annual Clinic was held for the first time atBenilde-St. Margaret’s and was a huge success. We want tothank the office staff, custodial staff and the school forallowing us to hold our clinic in their facility. Greg Juba(Park of Cottage Grove), the Clinic Coordinator, put togethera superb list clinicians. Ian Barker the NSCAA Director ofEducation and Stefanie Golan and Deana Waintraub(University of Minnesota Gopher Women’s Soccer Coachingstaff) were two of the main presenters. In addition we werehonored to have Manny Lagos from MN United FC, JohnLowery (University of St. Thomas), Cam Stilts (DakotaCounty Tech. College), Craig Lane (Skillful Coach), TonyPeszneker (Wayzata Girls Coach), Chad Moore (MN SoccerCoaching Academy), Simon Whitehead (Edina HS andCoerver Coaching MN) Hans Skulstad (MN Center forSports and the Mind) and Dave Hieb (Northwestern College)also were clinic presenters. One of the biggest perks for your athletes is to playin the Senior Classic in the Metrodome that will be held thisyear on Wednesday November 6th. This will be our finalyear to play this event at the Dome. It is always an excitingtime and we need more coaches and players to attend.

It seems every year that people are not aware of some veryimportant deadlines. One of the most important is theAcademic Award that the MSHSSCA gives to teams. GoldMetal plaques will be awarded to girls and boys teams ineach class whose GPA exceeds the 3.75 on the 4.0 scale.Silver Metal plaques are given to boys and girls teams witha 3.50 to 3.74 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Just bring your membership card forID. Enjoy the state tournament with your coaching friends.

As you probably know, I stay away most of the time fromwriting a lot of non MSHSSCA items. But for this issue, Ifelt that this part needed writing. On September 22, 2013there was an article written in the St. Paul Pioneer Pressentitled “Coaches’ next chapter might be in Mexico.” It waswritten by Tim Leighton about Bill Ebertz one of the twohead coaches of the Woodbury girls team. It pointed out, what we all know about soccer coaches; we love to care aboutkids. If you read the article, you know that Bill married alady, Paola Jimenez, from Mexico. He will be making adecision about what he is going to do. His legacy is alreadyin place and the quotes from his athletes are certainly atestimony to his character, love of the game and attention tohis athletes. The great part about the article was Bill telling

Summer is winding down and school year is underwayand with that being said Girls hoops are right around thecorner.

I am excited to serve as the President of the MGBCA for2013-14. I want to thank Jeff Buffetta for his commitment, time and leadership as our President this past year and lookforward to his continued support and dedication to MinnesotaGirls Basketball. Jeff did an outstanding job and I hope tobuild on the strides he made this past year. We are veryfortunate to have an outstanding group of leaders in ourassociation. Jenny Johnson from Edina is our ExecutiveDirector. Our President-Elect is Carl Pierson from Waconia.Pat Barrett is our MSHSL Liaison and Miss BasketballChairperson. Rick Uttech from Granada-Huntley and PatBarrett head our Hall of Fame Committee and Banquet.Stephanie Balvin will be the new chair of the All StarCommittee. Thank you to our section reps and those of youthat also commit your time in assisting on the variouscommittees.

We will be hosting our 35th Annual Fall Coaches’ Clinicthis year on October 25th which is a change from years pastas the clinic will be a one day clinic. Scott Bergmann(Sauk-Centre) and Bill Gottenberg (Hawley) have beenworking hard planning this event. Friday October 25th theclinic will be held at the University of St. Thomas. We arestill finalizing our speakers but I can tell you that we have:Aaron Johnston South Dakota State University, Ruth SinnUniversity of St. Thomas, Dave Smart Ada-Borup, ForrestLarson Take it to the Rim, BlairO’Donnovan www.strongerteam.com. More speakers to beadded. We will have 8 - 10 sessions and are excited for ourclinic!

They are set to cover both offensive and defensive topicsand we are looking forward to another great clinic. You mayregister online at mshsca.org/girlsbasketball. You can alsocheck our website for full details.

Challenge to all girls basketball coaches! For us toimprove the state of girls’ basketball it starts with thecoaches. We as coaches need to support our organization andit starts with all of your coaches becoming members of thecoaches association. Secondly, we need to get as many

coaches as we can to the clinic. We have heard too often inthe past that many girls’ coaches attend the boy’s clinic(which I am sure is an excellent clinic) but if we, as coaches, aren’t supporting our clinic, what message does that send?Next get involved! We are always looking for coaches to helpas section reps, help with all-star games, all tournamentteams, and much more. Fill the gyms again we all hear ofgirl’s coaches attending the boy’s state tournament and notthe girl’s state tournament. Again what message are wesending? I really encourage all coaches who do not make thetournament to get their kids involved to go to the statetournament; it might inspire them to work harder to get there. We have some of the most talented kids in the country righthere in Minnesota lets get out and support them. Ourcoaching network is good but it can even be better if we allcome together and support the great sport of girl’s basketball. The bottom line: I really feel we all could do a better job ofsupporting Minnesota girl’s basketball.

Take a look at our website:www.mshsca.org/girlsbasketball. The website is a veryhelpful tool. It provides all the information for theAssociation leadership including your SectionRepresentative. You will also find all the forms and deadlinesfor Ms. Basketball, All-Star and All-State, Academic All-State, Section Academic Championships and Hall of Fame.At our website you will also find further information on theclinic and registration.

The Association membership form is also accessible fromthe website. I would encourage you and your coaching staffsto become members of the organization. There are manybenefits to membership, both individually and for yourprograms. In order for your players to be eligible for any ofthe awards that the association sponsors, the head coach mustbe a member of the girls’ basketball association. You canregister online and it is easy and quick to complete by eitherusing our link or going to www.mshsca.org and find the linkfor 2013-14.

Our association continues to work productively with theMinnesota State High School League through our MSHSLliaison, Pat Barrett.

I am looking forward to working with all of you this year.I hope to see you and all of your coaching staff at the FallClinic! Remember to contact your section rep first if youhave any questions, ideas, and input. If you need furtherhelp, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or763-458-9070.

MINNESOTA PREP COACH50

Welcome coaches to the 2013-14school year and upcoming sportsseasons. My name is Jair Toedter and I have the privilege torepresent the MWCA this year, but as is true with all of uswrestling is a part of who we are but not all of it. In Februaryit is harder to remember that,so September is a great time toget organized and plan for the approaching busyness ofanother season.

One of the goals I wish to accomplish this year is torecognize those who have helped me learn and enjoy the sportof wrestling. Another is to encourage more wrestling coachesto get involved in their organizations, and to that end I amgoing to approach the MWCA and ask them to considermaking some changes to their section representative system.

Here are some things that as the school year begins as headcoaches we can begin work in September.

Communication: Formulate a plan to contact knownwrestlers and to encourage possible new recruits.

Develop a system that you can use to keep parents wellinformed of schedule and program information.

Planning:Take some time to lay out the technique youwish to cover in your room this season. Get this informationto your coaching staff as soon as possible so that they canprepare themselves to help bring this plan to fruition. Meetwith your youth coaches and booster clubs and understandwhat your wrestling community wants to do to help build andmaintain the local wrestling program.

Memberships: Take the time to update your membershipsin professional organizations that can benefit your sport andyour athletes. The MWCA and the MSHCA are organizationsthat can benefit professionally and being a current memberallows your athletes to be nominated for and win awards andscholarships.

Family: Take time this fall to spend time with family andfriends. Let them know how much you love and appreciatethem. When mid-season rolls around you won’t have the timeyou would like to spend with them and they make manysacrifices so that you can be an effective leader of yourprogram. Build up time in your attention bank and let themknow that there is more to come when the season reaches anend.

Now, back to one of my goals this year. Back in the 1980’sI had the chance to be introduced to the sport of wrestling bya unique and multifaceted staff in Perham, MN. Thanks toKurt Pesch, Tom Tomporowski, Craig Nelson, Mike Peterson,John McEachran, and Larry Mollins for giving of your time, passion, and talents to help develop boys into young menthrough the sport of wrestling. The lessons I learned therehave never been forgotten and have helped me throughhundreds of life’s situations.

Good luck this season coaches. Remember, no matter howtalented our teams are or what level of success they achieveon the mat our real mission is helping prepare the nextgeneration of productive citizens and community leaders. Thanks to that crew in Perham that understood the bottomline, and thank you coaches for giving of yourselves to do thesame in your communities!

MINNESOTA PREP COACH60

By: Terry EiterDetroit Lakes

The Minnesota State High School Coaches Association has always been aware of the valueof officials as an integral part of the high school athletic programs could function without the

dedication that is currently being provided to prep sports by the manyofficials in Minnesota.A few years ago, the MSHSCA, in an effort to restore sportsman-

ship, as it should be, to the stands of high school sporting events, creat-ed an Officials Distinguished Service Award.Coaches who are aware of the outstanding officials in your area that

qualify for the award should either nominate the officials directly or contactthe area officials associations and urge them to submit the deserving candi-dates for the award. This award is presented to five deserving officials at the MSHSCA’a

Annual Awards Banquet that is held each year in November. The MSHSCA has maintained a collective file of nominations but is currently looking for

more nominations of the many deserving officials that need to be recognized for their long timeservice to minnesota high school sports.Nominations to receive the Officials DSA can be submitted by using the fol-

lowing criteria.1. Should still be an active official.2. Have been a high school official of varsity competition for at least

25 years. If you know of a deserving official in your area that satisfies theestablished criteria, complete the accompanying nomination form and send to:

It is no secret that coaches do so muchwork behind the scenes. Ranging fromcounseling a student-athlete to breakingdown game film the hours arecountless. The old saying of “keepingup with the Jones’” certainlyapplies. There is a constant amount ofwork and dedication that goes unnoticedby the general public. The use oftechnology has made it somewhat moreconvenient in some activities with web-based sites that allow coaches andathletes to have access to their almostimmediately. The days of having to travelto other destinations to scout has beenreduced with electronic “ filmexchanges” now.

Much can be said that this isapplicable in the world of officiating aswell. Associations, crews and orindividual officials are now requestinggame film to review previous games aswell as prepare for upcoming games. Inresearching some of these possibilitiesfor officials it will take the cooperationof schools and coaches to make ithappen. A certain amount ofprofessional respect will be needed onbehalf of the coaches and the officialsthat agree to share information. It iscertainly my hope that if officials arerequesting game film or access to yourweb sites, Hudl - for example, that bothentities can work together in a professionand trusting manner.

Often times in the course of a activitythe relationship between a coach andofficial come into play - it isinevitable. The interactions come inmany forms - cordial to stressful. Whentimes get stressful both coaches andofficials need to react in a professional, not personal, manner. Being able to dothis takes considerable practice at beingable to take in, process and react in a

MINNESOTA PREP COACH 61positive manner. Even though you may be at the brink of anexplosion inside its’ what you do outwardly that matters.Throughout the course of an activity there will be numeroussituation that come into play where both the coach and officialare challenged. There are many unknowns that come up thatare not expected and we need to react in a short period of time.

It reminds me a bit of text messaging. When you receive atext you are not sure what it is going to say. It could besomething important, something meaningless, something thatmakes you take notice - or something you choose toignore. During the course of your day it is up to you to managethese messages. Some days you may accumulate enoughtroublesome messages to where it creates stress in your dayand that affects your decision making abilities. This analogyexists in any contest with coaches and officials involved. The“messages” sent to officials by coaches come in many forms -how a official receives the message and how he reacts to it willhopefully end with both parties having a better understandingof each other via proper communication. A professional coachand official will learn to manage these situations and stillmaintain their composure. This is where we all get better.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Some maychoose to focus on “how” something is said, rather thanfocusing on “what” was said. While a coach may lose controlfor a moment the official still needs to listen to what issaid. Yes, there is the fine line to cross when a coach maybecome disrespectful - and then there is just cause for sometype of penalty. It is unlikely that a coach is going to send amessage to an official right out of the gate that will rise to thelevel of disrespect. This often comes later in contests where thesituation was allowed to fester and the communication lineshave broken down. Even in situations that have the potential tobecome volatile it still needs to be handled in a calm, professional manner. Remember that no one makes youbehave or react in any certain way. That decision is totally upto yourself. In the course of competition it is inevitable thatdisagreements are going to occur - how you handle them are upto you.

One officiating term that has blossomed the last few yearsis “preventive officiating.” Believe it or not there have beenbooks written on the topic. This is where officials make apreventive comment or gesture to hopefully avoid fouls, penalties or disruption in the contest and keep the flow of acontest moving. It tries to keep problems from happeningbefore they happen. While this concept may seem golden onthe outside, in reality it can become a real problempossible. Donald Collins, an expert in the area of amateursports and officiating, writes, “ Rule makers have becomesensitive to the “two-edged sword” of warnings by officials andthe nebulous term “preventive officiating” in some areas. Awell-timed, discrete warning to a player who may havecommitted a rules infraction is a viable mechanic under mostcodes. But the same “warning” uttered by an official who hasobserved illegal contact or obvious unsporting conduct has noplace in officiating. From a risk management perspective, itcan be legal suicide to warn and not penalize when an

infraction of a safety rule has been committed. It’s bad enoughto witness an infraction and ignore it. Witnessing the infractionand advertising the fact — by means of a warning instead of apenalty — is just plain foolish.” That is a pretty strong messagethat if a foul or violation occurs in many situations, namely thesafety of the participants, it should be recognized and calledby the officials.

All my best to all coaches and officials during the 2013-14school year!

Remember it’s just a game – try and keep it fun.
