The company was founded in 1835 by James Steuart, a British sea captain who sailed the Southern Seas and discovered Ceylon and its great commercial potential. James together with his brothers Joseph and George established themselves initially as merchant bankers.

Transforming into an agency house, over time the company become a large scale exporter of coffee, until the coffee blight hit Ceylon in the 1870s. Supporting the national export drive by converting its export interests to tea, the company continued its growth momentum.

In 1954, George Steuart & Co was incorporated. The new high-rise “Steuart House” located at the heart of the business capital became the company’s headquarters.

The 1975 nationalization programme, adversely affected the company, which at this point in time was managing the largest acreage of tea plantations in the country.

Undeterred by this setback and gaining a renewed energy to succeed, the company recouped and set in motion a new drive to diversify and expand its activities. Fulfilling the needs and aspirations of the people, was always at the forefront of the company’s progress.

Today, 178 years later George Steuart & Co Ltd is proud to be one of the most dynamic groups of companies, with business involvement in exports, health, leisure & travel, real estate, engineering, FMCG, telecommunications, shipping, insurance, recruitment and higher education.

Commencing business in the year 1986 as a division of George Steuart & Company (Pvt) Ltd, the company began its operations as a manpower recruitment service. Originally a department of George Steuart Travel International Ltd, the company was incorporated in March 1993 to take over all manpower recruitment related activities.

The company recruits workers for overseas principals and enjoys a sound reputation for hiring high calibre personnel for foreign employers. The company also has a wide range of foreign principals spread throughout Kuwait, U.A.E, Doha Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and the United Kingdom. The Company has completed 30 years in manpower recruitment.

The company despatched semi- skilled and unskilled workers to South Korea through the Korean Federation of Small and Medium Business (KFSMB), during the period of 1997 to 2007. The number of recruits despatched under this agreement was 4,387 out of which 663 were female. We were the only private recruitment agency appointed as the recruitment agent to the KFSMB. All recruits despatched were

provided with residential training comprising of Korean language, culture, lifestyle and so on, by the company, as stipulated in the agreement. Welfare and attending to any problems they faced whilst in employment were handled by our branch office in South Korea.
