Weekly Newsleer - Friday, 22nd May 2020 Well, it seems that we have reached another half term. A big thank you to all of you at home who have been supporng your daughter through Guided Home Learning - you will have seen how we are going to tweak our Guided Home Learning provision for aſter half term in an email I sent home earlier this week - this informaon has also been sent to all pupils and is available on the website. I will also be going through it during our online assembly on Monday, 1st June. Please urge your daughter to contact their Form Tutor by email in the first instance if they are unsure of how to access their work. We are also planning for the provision of “some face to face contact” for our Year 10s and 12s later in June. There is a lot of work to be done around risk assessment and these plans may well be diverted by any government announcements that come in the next few weeks, however I felt it was important that you were aware that we are looking at various opons - more details aſter half term. What ever happens, Guided Home Learning will connue and I know that the provision and support that is coming your daughter’s way aſter half term will be excellent. A big thank you to our staff for all the work that they have been doing to make Guided Home Learning as good as it can be. This week we also announced our new Head Girls’ Team, please see visual below. The process to select the new Head Girl and the two Deputy Head Girls was rigorous and most enjoyable. Well done to all nine candidates who were short listed - an achievement in itself! The candidates had to present a speech (remotely) and also parcipate in an interview process which focused on their presentaon of a whole academy project. Yesterday I met with them and the senior prefects over Google Meet to talk to them about what they can do aſter half term involving the whole academy - online of course! Huge congratulaons to them and to the Senior Prefects and the Prefects; I am really looking forward to working with you all. Finally, well done to our Music Department and the pupils who took part in our entry for the GDST Eurovision Song Contest - again - all done in a virtual environment - what a wonderful representaon of academy life! Enjoy half term and stay well, Julie Taylor Principal We are delighted to announce our new Head Girls Team for 2020/21! Reports

We are delighted to be able to issue Year 11 and Year 13 pupils with their reports today. They have been posted home and also have been uploaded onto SIMS for you to view if you have the Parent App.

Under the current circumstances, many schools have cancelled report writing, so we are even more grateful to our staff for carrying on with this process and hope that you, as families, enjoy reading the report.

We do hope that this goes a little way in providing some sort of closure to Year 11 and Year 13 pupils in terms of finishing the year off on a positive note.

For Years 7-10 and Year 12 families, you will be pleased to learn that our staff are busy preparing end of year reports for pupils in these year groups also. These reports will be issued at the end of term.

Maths Challenge

Have you managed to figure out both parts of the Maths Challenge we have set over the last couple of weeks?

Digit FrequencyPart 1. What digit is the most frequent between the numbers 1 and 1,000 (inclusive)?Part 2. What digit is the least frequent between the numbers 1 and 1,000?

The most common digit is ‘1.’ 0 is the least common digit even though 1,000 has three zero’s!Explanations for both riddles:The digits 0 through 9 all follow the same pattern there is exactly 1 occurrence of each digit for every ten numbers e.g digit 2 appears once between 10 and 19, at 12. And 2 appears once between, 30 and 39 at 32. However, each of the digits 1 through 9 also appear in other numbers in the tens and hundreds place.Again, let’s look at 2 which appears in 20, 21, 22, 23, etc.. as well as 200, 201, 202, 203.So to figure out how to answer the first riddle you had to see what distinguishes the number 1? Only that we are including 1,000 which would be the first ‘1’ in a new series of ten! In other words, the digit 1 only has a single extra occurrence (301 occurrences) compared to 2 or 3 or 9 which each have exactly 300 occurrences. The reason that zero has the least (BY FAR at only 192 occurrences) is because zero does not have any equivalents to 22, 33, 44, 222, 3333 etc.

Here’s another MIND BOGGLING challenge for you to work out....

Foreign Country RiddleIn a certain country ½ of 5 = 3. If the same proportion holds, what is the value

of 1/3 of 10?

Positive Pod

This week tune in to the positive pod where Mrs Cox and Millie D from Y11 discuss mental health awareness week and what kindness means to them. This week they are joined by a few familiar Belvedere voices:

We hope you enjoyed Module 2 of Managing Your Mind.

Managing Your Mind is a digital programme provided by GDST partners, Positive, to help you navigate some of the psychological challenges associated with coronavirus.

In Module 3, we will be looking at how we can manage worries and intrusive thoughts.

When we’re worried about something it can be difficult to focus our attention. However, being able to manage our minds and deal with distractions (both around us and inside our own heads) is key to protecting our wellbeing and being able to respond effectively to challenges.
