  • A Journey Through The Wesley CommunitiesMuffin is the newest addition to our Wesley family. He is a domestic

shorthair and has lived throughout The Wesley Communities. He first lived with his former owner at Wesley Ridge while her Wesley Woods apartment was being completed. He then moved to his new home at

Wesley Woods. When his owner passed suddenly, he was taken in by a warmhearted Wesley Glen resident, Elizabeth Richard. Muffin is adjusting

well to his new life at Wesley Glen, and has enjoyed his journey to his forever home. We are a welcoming community of kindness and grace where

residents and staff (and pets!) thrive.

Rudy!Rudy was rescued by Meghan Routt, Wesley Glen’s Nurse

Practitioner. He loves to socialize, and dresses up for every occasion. He looks very handsome in his OSU garb. He visits the Clinic office on a regular basis, and residents look forward to seeing him. Rudy is especially loved by the residents residing

in Wesley Glen’s Memory Care apartments. He is also GiGi’s “boyfriend,” and he attended the birthday celebration in her honor!

On the Cover Happy 2nd Birthday to our four-legged Wesley Ambassadors – brother

and sister - GiGi and Gideon! The residents at Wesley Glen hosted a 2nd birthday bash for the dynamic duo in early February. We enjoyed

pupcakes, punch and many dog kisses.

GiGi and Gideon are fan favorites at Wesley Glen and Wesley Ridge. They were rescued by Mary LeMaster, Development Director of The

Wesley Communities. They have been regular visitors since they were six weeks old, and they consider Wesley Glen and Wesley Ridge their second

homes. Their unconditional love brings great joy to everyone they meet, and kisses are given freely! Pets play a large part in enhancing the lives of our

Wesley family. We hope they make your day a little brighter too.

  • We are a welcoming community of kindness and grace where residents and staff thrive.

    Joan WilsonJoan Wilson joined the

Board of Trustees in 2012. Her

    professional career has been

in health care, in varied settings and

    positions. Her exposure

to contract work in the field

    of gerontology was enlightening, and

heightened her awareness of the needs, as well as the gifts, of the residents living in the Wesley Glen community. Advocacy became and continues to be important to her. She states: “Today there is evidence of the research, education and knowledge which has been gained in the field of gerontology. There is more flexibility in recognizing the needs and desires of residents. Opportunities are plentiful for residents to continue to live an abundant life, whether it’s taking a class, enjoying a hobby, pursuing an interest in technology or enjoying the arts. Life continues to be meaningful, respected and enjoyed.

“This year is my 6th on the Board. Our new name, The Wesley Communities, reflects who we are. With our connection to John Wesley and the traditions of Methodism, we identify our heritage and who we represent: Wesley Glen, Wesley Ridge and our newest community, Wesley Woods at New Albany.” Thank you, Joan, for being a friend and advocate of The Wesley Communities.

Bob BradleyBob Bradley has served on the Board of Trustees of The Wesley Communities since 1994. His motivation to serve comes from seeing too many retirement centers that are dastardly and unkempt. He states: “The Wesley Communities is top notch, and through observing operations as a Board member I have been able to share my knowledge and make viable suggestions for church facilities in Washington, DC and Dayton, Ohio.

“I never dreamed there would be such communities that are run by such efficient staff. Occasionally I encounter patients in my practice who have known a resident of Wesley Glen and they speak very highly of the facility.”

He believes that The Wesley Communities’ new mission statement speaks to the point: We are a welcoming community of kindness and grace where residents and staff thrive. Residents do thrive and they are happy.

Bob continues to work part-time in the practice of anesthesia. His wish is to allow more time to interact with the Board and to serve on its Operations Committee. “I am thrilled to hear of the progress fostered by the excellent staff. They don’t miss a beat.”

Bob continues, “I hope these few words give you an idea why I am motivated to be a part of the Board. I really consider it a privilege.” Thank you, Bob, for your service. We especially enjoy Bob’s beautiful voice and his heartfelt rendition of The Lord’s Prayer at our quarterly Board meetings. It is OUR privilege to have Bob’s continued service, support and love for our Wesley family.

  • Coming Soon... Adult Day Services at Wesley Glen Retirement CommunityWe are proud to announce that we will soon be offering Adult Day Services at Wesley Glen where seniors and adults with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia receive individualized plans of daytime care with therapeutic activities and socialization in a well-supervised environment.

Participants benefit from socialization in a close-knit community. Appropriate activities and community programs help them feel productive and less dependent.

Walking areas with seating alcoves allow participants to move about freely in a protected environment. They can enjoy the outdoors safely in a secure walking garden and an additional enclosed patio.

Our new Adult Day program also offers:• Nutritious meals and snacks• High caregiver-to-client ratio• Medication administration and assistance with

special medical needs• Stimulating activities, trips and educational programs

tailored to each client’s needs• Memory Care program designed to meet unique needs of

those with dementia, with a behavioral neurologist available

Alzheimer’s Education and SupportCommunity members, family members of Wesley Glen residents, and especially those who are caregivers to a relative or friend are invited to join our Memory Care Support Group that meets at Wesley Glen in the conference room on the second Saturday of each month from 10:30am to 11:30am.

We offer group discussions on topics of interest; we also have a variety of speakers who join us with presentations, including staff from Wesley Hospice, Elder Care Law attorneys, and representatives from the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging. To RSVP for the support group, please call Lauren Croman at (614) 396-4900.

Successful Music & Memory Drive at Wesley Glen Retirement CommunityMelissa Fillhart-Cao, Wesley Glen’s Customer Liaison, has a personal goal to scale up our Music & Memory program. Since Autumn 2017 she has undertaken a drive for iPods and iTunes gift cards/cash. She started with 12 Apple devices and currently has 21; and she has received a little over $300.00 in iTunes gifts cards or cash. This will help pay for iPods and equipment, replace iPod batteries, and allow her to purchase songs for our residents’ personalized playlists.

Melissa is working with two community groups who are hosting fundraisers for our program -- North Broadway United Methodist Church and Brownie Troop #2575 from Clinton Elementary School. We thank them for their support.Melissa is currently working with residents and their families to customize playlists.

We hope to expand this program to other areas in the Wesley Glen community, and we hope to have the program up and running in our Health Center very soon. Thank you, Melissa, for your dedication to this program to help our residents thrive!

  • Wesley Glen Retirement Community2017 was a great year for Wesley Glen, our 48th year of service. We were honored to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (Bronze).

We began offering the Zinnia’s Café menu on the outside Vecozols Patio when weather permitted. Residents, employees and guests enjoyed lunch in the great outdoors thanks to Dining Services.

In the Wellness Center, we expanded our hours and increased memberships by over 90 members. We began an Arthritis Study with The Ohio State University. Silver Sneakers continued to grow, and we added a Mall Walkers program at The Shops at Worthington Place. We also added a new instructor and new classes, including Dance Fit.

The Better Breathers Club is a new offering that partners with our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.

The Wesley Glen Library implemented an online card catalog, and we installed a new audio/visual system in the auditorium thanks to the generosity of Paul G.* and Alyce C. Andrus. In addition, Wesley Glen has a new chapel, and we have renovated the 5th and 6th floors.

We are proud to offer a full spectrum of care to our residents. More than 30 independent living residents returned to their apartments after successful rehabilitation in our Health Center.

Wesley HospiceWesley Hospice provided care for 130 families in 2017. Also in 2017, we changed our name from Hospice Services at Methodist ElderCare to Wesley Hospice, and we relocated our offices to the Wesley Woods at New Albany campus.

We continue to offer a range of services to our patients and their families, including medical equipment, supplies, and comfort medications; 24/7 access to our Wesley Hospice team; home visits by a Hospice nurse; Hospice aide visits to assist with personal care; social services provided by social worker; counseling and spiritual support for patient and caregivers; and much more. We provide four levels of care: Routine Home Care, Crisis Care, General In-Patient Care, and Respite Care.

At Wesley Hospice we strive to make the most of each day for our patients and their loved ones by providing compassion and support, wherever they call home. Our Hearts for Hospice program aims to grant our clients’ end-of-life wishes. To learn more or make a gift to benefit Hearts for Hospice, please call (614) 396-4943.

Wesley Woods at New AlbanyWesley Woods at New Albany opened our independent living Villas in January 2017; they are nearly 100% occupied. The main building opened in August 2017, offering 70 independent living apartments. We continue to welcome new residents.

Construction is wrapping up on our Assisted Living (15 apartments), Memory Care (20 secure apartments), and Skilled Care (16 beds) units, with a projected opening of Spring 2018. We are eager to open our doors and hearts to more residents and clients.

After she sprained her knee in her garden, Wesley Ridge resident Jennie Thomas struggled for months with pain and limited mobility. As a part-time librarian and frequent babysitter for her grandson, she needed to work on healing; the injury was keeping her from doing what she loved.

Jennie decided to attend an Arthritis Foundation aquatics class at The Harcum Fitness & Aquatic Center to learn about exercises that could help her knee. Now she visits The Harcum Center 6 days a week! She alternates between structured exercises and walking while talking with other members who are using the pool. She has made new friends among community members, and her knee is stronger than ever.

Jennie is thankful to have The Harcum Fitness & Aquatic Center right on campus, and she considers the Harcums and other donors who made it possible her fitness heroes.

The SS Wesley GlenDick Spires loves the wellness programs at Wesley Glen. He

enjoys water aerobics classes five to six days a week and afternoon strength and balance classes. He is a sprightly 94

years old, and attributes his longevity to being active. He has been active in swimming and exercising for more than

thirty years. When asked what he likes best about our Wellness Center, he says, “I like all of it, really.”He feels like he is on a luxury cruise ship every

day, the SS Wesley Glen, he calls it. He enjoys the food and entertainment, and especially enjoys the

camaraderie he experiences with fellow residents.Dick, a resident since 2010, also serves as a mentor for

new residents, and volunteers in the Wesley Glen resident workshop making repairs to household items.

  • We Get By with a Little Help from our FriendsOne of the many blessings of working and living within The Wesley Communities is the caring relationships developed between staff and residents. Staff members care about our residents thriving, and residents care about our staff thriving. We are family, and families take care of each other.

The Development Office is proud to introduce an exciting NEW program to be offered to our employees in 2018 -- an Employee Emergency Fund. This fund will provide financial relief for employees who are experiencing a personal emergency or hardship. A committee comprising employees and residents will review applications and manage the program through a review process. It will be funded by employee donations during our employee campaign beginning in early May. Our goal is to raise $20,000 through cash donations and pledges for the start-up of this program. One-hundred percent of donations to the fund will benefit the employees of The Wesley Communities. This program offers an opportunity for our employees to support each other. Residents and families are welcome to contribute to this fund. To paraphrase the Beatles, “We get by with a little help from our friends.”

Building a LegacyThe June and Dave Harcum Employee Scholarship took root in 2014,

and has continued to branch out and blossom into a beautiful tribute to the generosity and philanthropic blessings of June and Dave

Harcum. Their love of the Wesley Ridge staff is a blessing to so many.

The Scholarship has provided education funds to 35 employees of the Wesley Ridge family, and there are many more opportunities to provide even more education dollars to our staff.

Additional gifts from our caring and generous residents of the Wesley Ridge community will ensure that this beloved program

will continue to blossom and grow for future generations. Although Dave is no longer with us, we know that he is giving us a

thumbs-up as we continue to nurture this program that was so dear to his heart, and to June’s as well.
