READING & LANGUAGE ARTS

Reading, Writing, and Grammar will be integrated.

Students will be taught to read closely in an effort to build comprehension and to promote evidential writing. We want them to read like a detective, and write like a reporter

Students will be assessed with STAR Reading, Accelerated Reader, Benchmark tests, teacher made tests.

Students should strive to master grade level writing and speaking

CLOSE READING LITERACY THROUGH CLOSE READING WILL BE PERVASIVE

Close reading describes, in literary criticism, the careful, sustained interpretation of a brief passage of text. Such a reading places great emphasis on the single particular over the general, paying close attention to individual words, syntax, and the order in which sentences and ideas unfold as they are read.

Text complexity: difficulty level and quality

Evidentiary responses: meaning comes from the text; written responses, work independently
