THEY DO LIKE THE OLD SONGS Does the radio audience actually want such a heavy preponderance

of current popular songs as the usual loudspeaker fare provides? The Dupont Company not only raises that heretical question, but comes forward with an arresting answer.

In its Today and Yesterday feature (CBS over WKRC, Friday at 7:30 P. M.) this sponsor has been asking listeners to vote for the songs they like best. Thus far more than 6000 have done so. And to the aston- ishment of many program executives, the tabulated results show a smashing victory for the old favorites over current hits.

Though the vote is scattered among a total of 614 numbers, an over- whelming majority of the ballots go to but seven songs. And of these, only one rates as a current tune. Here are the winning seven, in the order of their preference: "Silver Threads Among the Gold," "When You and I Were Young, Maggie," "Paradise," "Old Man River," "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "My Wild Irish Rose," and "The End of a Perfect Day."

Emphasizing the trend here established, among 24 other numbers which finish in the runner-up group, only three are contemporary tunes. Moreover, to dispose of any suspicion on that score, the Dupont statisti- cians state that balloting was not confined merely to middle-aged or elderly people. On the contrary; they report that many of the votes for old favorites come from young people.

Certainly all this is keenly interesting to say the least. True, such polls are not infallible, and 6000 votes are scarcely enough

to be conclusive. However, even when so discounted, the Dupont find- ings are still sufficiently striking to give program -builders considerable to ponder over.

To those of us who view radio from the loudspeaker end it has been evident for some time that the overwhelming listener preference -for current popular songs is largely an easy-going studio fallacy. With an audience known to represent innumerable shades of taste, it is simply. inconceivable that one type of music should have such a preponderant following as programs purport to indicate.

If the Dupont poll does no more than drive this home to station managers, it will have served a useful purpose. And if it rouses program - builders to forsake the studios long enough to learn what people dial out, something highly beneficial will come of it.

Ns Rubs of

Broadcasting

By John L. Clark General Mange, Stations WLW, WSRAL, WSAI

Not only in America is broadcast- ing an outstanding achievement, but in the world. Yet, America leads the world in the number of broad- casting stations. At present, accord- ing to data furnished by the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Com- merce, there are 1,423 broadcasting stations in the entire world. Of this number, 617 are in the United States. That is close to one-half. The remaining 806 stations are di- vided among 70 countries. In num- ber of stations Canada follows the United States. There are 85 sta- tions in the Dominion; Russia is next, with 78; Cuba has 53; Mexico 47; Argentina 38; Sweden 33, and France 31.

* * *

From this summary it is easily seen that American Broadcasting, as an industry, tops the world. It all came about from a small beginning, a comparatively short time ago, with the end of development not yet in sight. In fact, the authorities agree that the business is just about get- ting started.

* *

Radio's progress in the world of attainment fluctuated between the continents -E u r op e and North America-back and forth, with the Maxwells, the Marconis on one side, and the Edisons and Bells on the other, ferreting and finding facts of infinite value.

Edison, in 1875, was experiment- ing with an electro -magnet. Sparks flew in his laboratory. Out of that demonstration was discovered the power of ether waves. The wizard of electricity called it "Etheric Force." It was put to work in an- other form, one step nearer the ac- complishment that is today an ac- tual fact, Broadcasting.

* . * *

EIectricity, in the Eighties, held the attention of all the world, just as broadcasting, a distinct phase of its force, does today. It was in that period, before the Gay Nineties, that the incandescent lamp was put on the market, the kerosene lamp and the old-fashioned candle light fading into obscurity. Perhaps that is why they were called the Gay Nine- ties, those years that watched the softer lights dimmed by the bril- liancy of the electric bulb. They

were gay, but not so gay as these later years when all the world is en- tertained by broadcasting, when the touching of a dial brings into the humblest home a flood of music.

Even the great inventor, Edison, had no idea where his experiments were leading, nor had Bell when he perfected the telephone. Marconi had visions of what might happen if all the world were brought to- gether by easy communication. When he assembled his apparatus for the great trial wireless, the sci- entists all over the world watched.

The vast majority of people know nothing about the first flash of wire- less that reached out from a sea- port in England and touched an an- tenna on a shin several hundred miles at sea. Nor was their con- sciousness weakened when the first message was flashed across the At- lantic, from the New World to the Old. No organized publicity at- tended that event. Yet it was epoch- making.

* * *

Broadcasting now finds itself the welcomed guest in millions of homes but even with its great popularity, its common oc- currence, its magician -like perform- ance, the benefits of broadcasting are sometimes forgotten. Few re- alize the many forces needed to make broadcasting possible, from the transmitter to the receiver.

* *

The story of radio is fascinating as any book of adventure. It has in it the elements of drama. It is rapidly gaining headway as one of the country's leading industries, fig- ures from the Department of Com- merce proving that it must be reck- oned as a world force, with Amer- ican broadcasting at the head of the parade.

That Gay Vienna feature (NBC over WSAI, Tuesday at 8 p. m.) is built to order for the many who prefer concert music with charm and melody. Erno Rapee's good or- chestra and ,red Hu-ismith's able tenor provide the refreshing pro- gram.

Ad radio simile: as unusual as a broadcasting humorist who is not

So another Cincinnati program gets into the NB 7 schedule; Theo- dore Hahn, Jr.'s Southern Sympho- rues, produced in the W 'CKY stu- dios and going out Over the Blue network (Friday at 11:15 p. m.). It's a well -carnet] compliment. The program is worthy of the Queen City's musical reputation.

If you go in for tall tales, you'll like the Chandu the L agician serial (daily except Thursday and Sunday, over WLW at 7:15 p. m., and WSAI at 5:45 p. m.). It's built around the ancient superstition that oriental magic is beyond the comprehension c mere occidentals. Houdini, Thurston, et al., exploded that long since. But it still gets a play.

Those Crisco programs by the Mills Brothers and Vic Young's or- chestra (CBS over WKRC, Tues- day at 6:15 p. m. and Thursday at 8:15 p. m.) 11 rate among the slickest popular shows on the air. If there's any musical trick the Mills lads can't do, it just hasn't been thought of.

That Columbia series of labor programs (Sunday at 12 noon) is worth dialing for. It gives labor the national mouthpiece it has been deserving and promises to be mighty interesting.

Nat Shilkret conducting a costly record for a famous tenor and get, ting along fine until he discovered the temperamental artist had changed.,important lyrics to "I don't like this lousy song."

Those programs of Henry Fill- more's band (WLW, Tuesday at 9

Another feather in Cincinnati's cap. Mabel Jackson is the pleasing soprano in the Today and Yesterday progr :m (CBS over WKRC. Friday at 7:30 p. m.).

And comes word that Mary Rob- erts Rinehart's "Tish" stories are to go on the air over NBC, beginning June 6. Let's hope one of the locals will take them. They're sure to draw plenty of expectant ears.

Yes, times are mighty tough with broadcasting folks. The State of Maine has sent Phillips Lord (Seth Parker) 50,000 trout for the lake on

his Long Island Estate. So the place must be just a rustic retreat where Seth can meditate on the simple life.

Even though the Robert Burns program has folded, it's to be hoped that Burns and Allen won't leave the air. They've been good for too many laughs to pass without being missed.

Every spring for the past several years a fan has taken Billy Jones and Ernie Hare for a ride in his speed boat. But every day we hear mutterings about taking other broadcasters "for a ride."

Ruth Reeves showed up the other day with a brand new Plymouth (Advt). She confided to us that by combining her luscious smile with a small amount of baby talk she was able to get twice as much for her Lizzie than it was worth-at 25 cents a throw Ruth is now paying her gasoline, etc., by giving the studio force a ride around the block in her new bus.

That Philansue Trio, a new local feature, heard daily in the early afternoon, is rapidly gaining popu- larity. The members feature blue numbers "what am blue numbers"- play their own accompaniment- have only been on the air a little over three months. Their real names are Sue Martin, Annabelle Martin, and Felice Carr -17, 19 and 19 respec- tively. Their picture will appear shortly in these columns.

Race horse fans are really in for a treat this summer. Columbia Broadcasting System is putting on nearly 50 of the big races, a majority of which WKRC will carry.

Most any afternoon or evening you can catch a glimpse of Miller Ever- son, Howard Hafford, Duane Snod- grass or Early Boyle cavorting around the dartball courts of the Eastern Hills "Y." They put in such a strenuous afternoon the other day that it took Howard Hafford two days to recover. He manages to struggle around with a limp.

TAUNT We are no longer children-we must come

To some sharp, sane decision soon, my dear; For, when the blood runs cool and senses numb,

We will regret each trifling, wasted year. There's been enough of infantile dispute,

Enough to give and take along the way, I will not stand and watch the moments loot

The bloom from youth that has too short a sway.

Measure my faults and add my virtues up -- Test me and weigh me on the scales of chance;

Either discard or drink the flowing cup, Where is there room for weakness in romance? ... .....

(Spring is in town with flowers in her hair- Must she be told you cannot take a dare?) .

DEPRESSION, AGAIN? Con Conrad tells us about the two Wall Street bankers who emerged

from The Crash with nothing but scant $90 -a -month incomes. Their first thought was suicide, but they changed their minds when they learned of the Isle of Majorca off the coast of Spain, where for $90 a month a man could live in a luxurious house, employ 10 servants and drink the rarest wines.

So, off went the duo Majorca -bound. After six months of soft living, they began to realize what an even better place it would be if they could induce some of their market -stricken pals to eschew the States and come to laze with them in the Spanish Eden. But the plan was futile. When they arrived back in New York, they couldn't find one with a $90 -a -month income.

NOT EVEN A LEAF! First-nighters were commenting on "There You Are," the Hyman

Adler musical, in the George M. Cohan lobby during intermission, Mon- day night. "The music isn't bad," ventured an afternoon reviewer, "but the book is very weak."

"Weak?" spouted Jack Osterman, "Why that's no book, it's just a pamphlet."

SUE ME! The protesters have the floor. Last week this shaft reported the

story about Al Boasberg's grandmother. The screamie wit, en route to N. Y., bad wired her to meet bins when the Twentieth Century stopped in Syracuse, and when she saw him, she ran to his arms and cried, "I'm so happy to see you, Al. I even )Hissed a funeral this morning, so. I could come to the train."

On the face of it, a harmless Iittle yarn! But the mail and telegraph systems have been taxed with the burden of pointing out to me 1,001 errors of my typewriting ways. From H. T. Howard of Chicago comes the electric reprimand: `Dope! Stop! See what time the East -bound 20th Century passes Syracuse and then explain why these up -Staters have their funerals during the wee small hours."

Justice Samuel J. Ilarris of the N. Y. Supreme Court Chambers in Buffalo takes us to task with a note, in effect, "The story about Al Boasberg furnished a laugh to those of us who are acquainted with his family. The reason for the laugh is that not only has Al no grandmother in Syracuse, but his two grandmothers, both of whom lived in Buffalo, have been gone from this life for many years."

Perhaps I should never have brought the whole matter up. * * *

George Tells 'Em

"Who won the World Series in 1919?" "In what year did the Reds win all the games of the season?" These and other "be- lieve it or not" questions are answered and discussed by George Case, staff announcer and sports authority of WCKY, in his Wednesday 10 p. m. "Sportlights." An interesting feature is a sports question -box during which George draws listeners' questions to be an- swered and discussed.

TO READ FROST

The poems of Robert Frost will be featured in this week's Golden Gates of Melody program, broadcast each Sunday at 9:30 p. m. from WCKY. Alice Rowlette will read two of Frost's works, "Birches," and "Mend- ing Wall." Golden Gates features the music of the Plantation Players with. the tenor solos of Homer Bernhardt.

MIRRORS MIDNIGHT

"Midnight Mirrors," is the image - provoking title of the new organ pro- gram broadcast by WCKY every Sunday from 11:30 to midnight and featuring Tommy Ott, staff organist with Grady Hodges, tenor. The pro- gram is impressionistic, depending on the tranquil flow of music and se- lected bits of poetry. At midnight, after a half hour of delightful wan- derings through the jade palace of night, the room of the Midnight Mir- rors is reached, and in it deep re- flected are one's own images in the tranquil waters of sleep. Jack Snow, WCKY's continuity Editor, is au- thor.

Turning to the midwest, Variety adds: -

The powerful and ultra WLW station in Cincinnati has three smash local favorites in Ford Rush (Old Man Sunshine) who is the juvenile radio deity; the Crosley Theatre of the air which the Powell Crosley, Jr., station maintains as an institu- tional ballyhoo, and the Maxwell Cotton Queen program with Hink and Dink, colored comics a la A&A. Bob Newhall's sports talks from WLW and the Doodlesockers, also from WLW, with Bob French on WCAH, are other- midwest fays emanating from two Ohio stations."

be represented in an unusual pro- gram Wednesday (June 1) at 2:45 p. m. over WLW when the two-Iine poem, "A Song," is sung, Abe Crad- dock Edmunds, p r o m is i n g young poet, of Lynchburg, W. Va., wrote the poem, Lloyd Schaefer, assistant conductor at WLW, wrote the music, and Samuel T. Wilson of WLW will sing it. .- - - --

"Shall International Trade Be Stifled?" will be the subject Thurs- day (June 2) at 5:30 p. m. of James G. McDonald over WS'AI .(NBC - WE A.F),

Letter Box M. R., Hyde Park: We are ad-

vised Leo O'Rourke resigned front the Cavaliers Quartet November 23, 1931, to do solo work. He is not on the air now but may be reached through the -NBC Artists Service.

Editor Radio Dial: Surely you must know, as thousands of others know, that the most incomprehen- sible and reprehensible thing in the repertoire of music is jazz and crooning! Right at once let it be gladly and truthfully asserted that the writer has never yet heard either of these monstrosities of sound- murdered and murderous music if one pleases-that the producers of the same were not instinctively and distinctively sensed to be capable of far better effects with very much less effort so miserably wasted! It's all like damming up the natural life-giving soul -refreshing springs of nature with mud and clay and seeing the pure waters come through as slime! It's like turning an orchestra or band into a till pan factory at the mercy of a cyclone, everything crashing against what- ever is "next to" making noise far from the name, sound and meaning of music! Music has been known to charm reptiles and soothe the savage breast but it takes the poison and even shamelessness of jazz and crooning to make cannibals and "nuts" of the mont civilized and sane of humanity! Can 'any good come out of Nazareth? Study the one time and present reputed con- ditions of that place and know that the affirmative is more possible there than for jazz and crooning- wretches of the fine art of music both vocal and instrumental! If all the contempt and indienation heard expressed against these blights upon

the wide -spreading and luxurious tree of radio-written or phoned into stations tolerating them-could' be heard, the nuisance would be speedily and permanently eradi- cated, dumped as so much so-called musical (?) refuse. When we a_ = older and no longer able to cajole a typewriter into maintaining an upright carriage, we shall be tempted to found a society for the prevention of cruelty to radio listeners. Publicatio-1 of the foregoing letter, we feel, is a step for it has given relief to one Radio Addict' However, we must remind Radio Addict of a quaint old slogan, grown old now in the service but still running briskly, as follows:

A dill erewe of opinion makes horse-rrccs-(and, may we add, ra- dio programs). The very diversity of radio programs is a key to their broad appeal. Whether or not crooning is good for Americans is a different matter, touching peri- lously on legislating morality (?). and hence a little wider than this five -column page.

Georgie Price, brilliant comedian, singer and impersonator, headlines the new Chase & Sanborn tea pro- gram to be given Tuesdays and Thursdays at ti :45 p. m. over Co- lumbia beginning Thursday (June 2).
