Safety is the condition of being safe, protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury. This is a worthy goal and one that makes sense from a business perspective. Compassion Fatigue...Symptoms and Prevention

Compassion is a long-held human characteristic or virtue, where one shows active regard for another’s situation, specifically in times of misfortune and or suffering. It is essential for good or ethical care. Compassion fatigue is becoming a common phenomenon experienced by many working in the helping professions. Conversely, compassion fatigue is a term often used to describe the diminished capacity to be compassionate when providing care. It has been known to have direct negative consequences to patient/client care, and to the care-provider’s psychological, emotional, and physical well-being. Dr. McInnis-Perry’s presentation will present us with a theoretical and practical understanding of compassion fatigue; its implications in caring for self and others; what factors contribute to it; and how we can address these factors.

It Could Happen to You: Candace Carnahan uses her personal account of triumph following a devastating workplace incident at the age of 21 - an episode that could have taken her life. In telling her story, Carnahan recalls the impact that the incident had on her family, her colleagues and her surrounding community. She also addresses the many contributing factors that led to the calamity, including poor leadership, lack of training, and an unsafe work environment. While she is quick to accept her role and responsibility in the event, she does so while encouraging people to have the ‘courage to care’ and to look out for each other - both on and off the job. Candace’s call to action explores how we can live by and encourage a purposeful and positive safety attitude at our workplace. Her infectious enthusiasm helps her audience realize their power to reduce, and even eradicate workplace injuries.
