Lesson 01

10 Alpha 2

Simile and Metaphor

People love to compare things. In creative writing, this habit is more noticeable. It is in black

and white, that is, it’s in print. Comparisons are a useful writing tool. It can help make your work

more interesting. A comparison causes the writer to look at the item being compared in more

detail. In turn, the reader then gets more information. Comparisons make a story more vivid. It

brings a story to life!

There are two main types of comparisons a writer can use:

(1) A simile is a figure of speech that uses “as” or “like” to make a comparison.

(2) A metaphor is a figure of speech that indirectly compares two things without the use of the

words “as” and “like”.

He is as brave as a lion. Simile

He is a lion at heart! Metaphor
