Shortly after WBGO made its debutin 1979, the Institute of JazzStudies at Rutgers University was

visited by Al Pryor, the station’s first pro-gram director (now Executive V.P. ofArtist & Repertoire at Mack AvenueRecords). Since the newborn station hadno record library, he suggested that theInstitute might lend it some albums fromits huge collection. Though this wasagainst our non-circulating rules, weagreed. Each week, Rhonda Hamilton, who has had presence on WBGO for itsentire 35 years, would borrow an armloadof LPs, and then exchange it for another.A few months later, Pryor invited us to doa weekly show, dubbed Jazz from theArchives. Initially, it was a three-hourprogram, free-form rather than focusedon a single topic, aired on Sundays andwas re-broadcast on Mondays. The origi-

Jazz from the ArchivesA 35 Year PartnershipBetween Two NewarkInstitutions

nal trio of hosts, Ed Berger, DanMorgenstern and Vincent Pelote, is stillon board 35 years later, augmented by achanging cast of other Institute staffersand associates.

In those early days, technical condi-tions were somewhat primitive. Studioand bathroom being on the same floor, the latter contained prominent warningsnot to flush when the red light was on,but hardly a taping went by without atleast one intrusion during a mic breakfrom the never caught “Mad Flusher.” Asthe station matured, our share of weeklyprogramming went from six to two hours, and the shows became more sophisticat-ed; only Morgenstern had previous radioexperience. Many aspects of jazz history, always approached as a continuum ratherthan limited to the past, were illuminat-ed, with shows often enhanced by guests.

ourstory

Benny Carter, with whom Beger had aspecial relationship, as biographer, roadmanager and record producer, was a frequent visitor. Others from a long list, too many alas no longer with us, haveincluded Ray Bryant, Doc Cheatham,Milt Hinton, Frank Wess, Phil Woods,Jimmy Heath, Joe Wilder, Dizzy Reece,Remo Palmier, George Duvivier, GilFuller, Kenny Davern, Howard Alden,Benny Waters, Daryl Sherman, GrachanMoncur III, Ahmed Abdul-Malik andMundell Lowe.

Loren Schoenberg, now ArtisticDirector of the National Jazz Museumin Harlem, did a fascinating multi-partinterview with Jean Bach, creator of the Great Day in Harlem documentary. Many authors of books on jazz haveguested; among them Todd BryantWeeks, biographer of the great trum-peter-singer Hot Lips Page, whobrought with him Page’s son (a retiredjudge) and grandson (a young lawyer), tothe delight of Morgenstern, who hadknown and idolized Page. Annual trib-utes to Louis Armstrong, on both hisbirthdays, July 4 (when he celebrated)and August 4 (historically researchedbirthdate), have long been a regular fea-ture. And musician-educator BillKirchner has lent special insight to thework of modern masters, while youngJoe Peterson brings a bassist’s perspec-tive to that instrument’s legacy.

Ongoing treatments of the works ofindividual musicians have includedPelote’s Adventures in Hendersonia andMorgenstern’s Adventures in Ellingtonia, while the late John Clement lent hisinimitable British accent and specialdelivery to his idol Johnny Hodges, guitarist Tiny Grimes, and his AnnualHonking, Shouting, and ScreamingRock and Roll and Rhythm ‘n’ BluesShow, (with a pass from host of WBGO’sPortraits in Blue, Bob Porter).

Humor has also been an ingredient inthe program’s annual Christmas Special, currently in the hands of Pelote, whowas long partnered by late host, AnnieKuebler. When the program was still in its two-hour frame, the holiday showwas a team effort, to which the station management memorably con-tributed a special enhancement, spikedeggnog, though we would wrap withLionel Hampton’s “Gin for Christmas.”Ah, memories!

Thus the relationship between twoNewark jazz landmarks, what wouldbecome the greatest of jazz radio stationsand what is the largest library andarchive of jazz materials anywhere, goesback a very long way. The aim of Jazzfrom the Archives has always been topresent the rich recorded history of themusic in a manner that lets it speak foritself, at times with welcome help fromits makers. We hope our listeners haveenjoyed the ride. We certainly have!

WBGO and 2 Gateway Center in Newark invite

those who live, work and visit Newark to celebrate

the 35th Anniversary of WBGO 88.3 FM at our joint

concert series. The series, which began in 2013, has expanded to the first Wednesday of

each month. These free lunchtime concerts highlight some of the contemporary talent

featured on WBGO.

The Claire Daly Quartet will perform on Wednesday, June 4. Daly is a baritone saxo-

phonist and composer. Six time winner of the DownBeat Critics’ Poll “Talent Deserving

Wider Recognition” and winner of the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Baritone

Saxophonist of the Year” category in 2005. Her latest recording is a collection of

Thelonious Monk compositions, Baritone Monk.

On Wednesday, August 6 at 12pm, come tap your feet to the sounds of Lakecia

Benjamin. A streetwise New York City native born and raised in Washington Heights,

Benjamin has become one of the most highly sought-after players in soul and funk music.

She first picked up the saxophone at Fiorello LaGuardia High School for the Performing

Arts, after which she joined the renowned jazz program at New York’s New School

University. With her deep jazz roots, she was soon in demand as an arranger and horn sec-

tion leader, landing stints with such acclaimed artists as Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Macy

Gray, the Roots, and Anita Baker.
