Winter 2019

SPARE SOUTH DAKOTANS AN UNTHINKABLE CHOICE

To Heat or Eat?

When winter arrives and overnight temperatures plummet below zero, many of our neighbors sense an added chill in their bones. Families across South Dakota have to face daunting choices: Do I buy the groceries I need, or pay for the utility bill?

No member of our community should ever have to decide between the basic essentials of life. Especially our seniors — grandmothers and grandfathers who carry themselves with pride and dignity befitting their age.

Thankfully, you have the power to help so many of our state’s most vulnerable families and seniors in their time of greatest need. It begins with your next donation to Feeding South Dakota.

With your help, these hardworking families and kindly seniors won’t have to worry about forsaking food to afford heat, medical expenses, or other essentials. Every dollar you donate can help provide three life-sustaining meals to help see them through the harsh winter months.

Thank you for your support. You’re filling stomachs and lifting spirits all across the great state of South Dakota!

WAYS TO HELP THIS WINTERAs a valued friend and partner of Feeding South Dakota, you play a critical role in helping to end hunger across the state. Here are the most effective ways to maximize your support in the new year.

Donate Funds Every dollar you give can provide three meals for hungry people in South Dakota. Right now, one in six children risk going hungry in our community. Your generous contributions make a crucial difference for those hungry children, hardworking parents, and struggling seniors.

Donate Time Volunteers represent the heart and soul of our work. By donating your time to Feeding South Dakota, you

help fill empty cupboards for families, empty tummies for school-age children, and provide hope and

HOW YOU’RE PROMOTING A HEALTHIER SOUTH DAKOTA

DRIVE TO DEFEAT HUNGER

Have you ever heard the expression, “Hunger knows no season”? While it’s true that hunger hurts year-round for our most vulnerable South Dakota neighbors, it does extra damage in the wintertime.

People can live without air conditioning in the summer. They might be sweaty, uncomfortable, or even miserable…but they’ll make it through. Winter is another story. You have to have heat —no ifs, ands, or buts.

When you get right down to it, many families and seniors across our state lack the means to afford groceries and pay skyrocketing winter utility bills. Throw in unforeseen circumstances like a medical emergency or the loss of a job and you’re dealing with a situation that’s entirely unsustainable.

That’s when folks who had been hanging on by a thread begin to lose their grip. Thankfully, kindhearted friends like you are there to provide a safety net. Your ongoing support means our hungry neighbors will have a place to turn when they need help to have enough food to make it until the end of the month.

When a pipe bursts in their home, or a weak car battery finally gives out, you’ll save these families and seniors from the brink of catastrophe. Thank you, as always, for Feeding South Dakota!

Gratefully,

March is National Nutrition Month, and we’re honored that you’ve chosen to do your part by giving to Feeding South Dakota. Thanks to you, we’re making progress on Food to Encourage, Feeding America’s approach to distribute healthier foods.

With your help, we’ll source and distribute more foods that promote good health — fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean proteins.

Our goal is to provide 100,000 hungry South Dakotans with over 9.1 million pounds of healthy food annually by fiscal year 2019. This means that 65% of the food we distribute through our five programs and 334 agency partners would be healthy produce, dairy, and proteins. Your continued support means our goal is well within reach. Thank you for caring so deeply about your fellow South Dakotans’ health and well-being.

Looking for a way to fight hunger along the picturesque highways and byways of our great state? Feeding South Dakota is proud to announce its participation in the Specialty License Emblem Plate fundraising program.

For a donation of $25, a set of Feeding South Dakota decals will be mailed to you to affix to your emblem specialty license plate. Please visit FeedingSouthDakota.org/license-plate to reserve yours today. Or for more information on this program, visit dor.sd.gov/Motor_Vehicles and click on License Plates.

EMPTY BOWLS TO BOOST MOBILE PANTRY IN PIERRE

SAVE THE DATE FOR PRIME TIME GALA

Hunger can hit anyone at any time. I learned that the hard way. Back before my husband passed — before the cancer came and the medical bills piled up — we made a comfortable life together. We raised three daughters and ran a successful business.

Everything changed when I lost my husband. Now I live alone, in our old farmhouse, and it’s a struggle to maintain it. Last winter was tough, with so much snow. My health is pretty good for my age, but I still have setbacks. I had to get hearing aids recently, and my insurance wouldn’t cover them. Then I could barely afford groceries…

shame in needing a little help to get through.

And I have to tell you: The groceries help a lot. I get a senior box once a month that’s filled with essentials like oatmeal, orange juice, and a nice variety of vegetables. Knowing I’ll have something to eat takes such a weight off my mind. It gives me an extra little boost, and lets me stay in my own home.

Many of the seniors I’ve met here go hungry without this help. Thank you for being someone who cares.
