From the Desk of: Andy Harris, Trustee

Dear Wayne Township Residents and Businesses;

As I sit down to write this article every month, I try to take into consideration

the Community’s needs. I know my team and I attend monthly meetings and

we talk about our services, but the story I am about to share with you is more

than just services or just our office; it is about long established partnership

and new partnerships and selfless acts of kindness. There is a saying that

reads, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I believe it takes a concerned and

caring Community to help one another, and I believe Wayne Township is that

Community. Back in February the Trustee’s Office received a call from

legal aid who stated he was working with a gentleman who had multiple needs and wanted to know if

we could help. The case worker who received this call took down all the information and went

straight to work. A little back ground on this client, he had no income; no heat; no water; no

insurance and a prosthetic leg, which was broken. As far as we could tell he had very little to eat

over a long period. After our office did a home visit we saw the home was full of trash in every

room. The needs of this gentleman was overwhelming. Our office was able to supply food vouchers;

household and personal needs until he was able to apply and receive food stamps. We were able to

give him bus passes for transportation and a hotel voucher, but this was still not enough to sustain

him long term. We decided to sit down with the Attorney who had originally called us. This

Attorney offered to take our client back and forth to check his mail everyday, which also gave him

companionship, while we placed him in a hotel. Our caseworker on her own time and her son Matt

contacted Neighbor Link. Neighbor Link is an organization who tries to keep elderly homeowners in

their home. Neighbor Link sent 10 volunteers, masks, gloves and even provided donuts and coffee

every morning prior to cleaning. Our caseworker and her son reported they removed 2 12 yard

dumpsters of trash from his home, both of which Matt paid out of his pocket to have the dumpsters

removed. One neighbor ask if everything was ok? After hearing the story of this gentleman’s

struggle, that neighbor rallied other neighbors and they hauled off bags and furniture to their curb so

all the trash could be picked up on the same day. Serve Pro and Attaboy Plumbing, two companies

we have partnered with in the past were willing to go to the home and evaluate the damage.

Unfortunately the damage was too great. One day prior to being removed from his home, this gentle-

man was able to get insurance to get his prosthetic leg fixed and see a doctor for other health issues;

we were able to contact a family member to help care for him and along the way he had people to talk

to, a safe place to stay, food in his stomach and unconditional love from many people. I am so proud

of my employees and the job they do but I think what I am most proud of is my employees building

those relationship and reaching out and knowing it takes an entire community to help one person.

Take a moment, look around, is there anyone near you that maybe you could take time out to help?

Even if it is to connect them to a resource who can help, will you make that connection? This is what

great communities are made of. This is what Wayne Township is made of.

God Bless,

~Trustee Andy Harris

Every year we have been fortunate to spend

time at the Hoosier Burn Camp. The

councilors and children are amazing! It is a

nonprofit organization committed to providing

life-changing experiences for young people

who have suffered the physical and emotional

trauma associated with a severe burn injury.

This camp and monthly events create

experiences for burn survivors where they can

be just one of the kids ™ in a safe and

supportive environment.

Wayne Township Trustee’s Office employees participate in the HOST program. “The

difference between the children when they enter the program to when they leave is like

day and night.” stated Becki Viewegh, a mentor at Maplewood Elementary. Why

mentor? You do make a real difference in the life of a child. Research shows that your

one-to-one mentoring can help a child learn faster, become more self reliant, increase

self-esteem, attend school more regularly and have fewer discipline problems. It is a

way to give back to your community. When students fail, communities suffer.

Research also shows students who can read well by the time they are in third grade are

more likely to graduate and become successful, productive citizens. Do you have an

hour? Help a child read!!! Call 317-988-8675.

Wayne Township Trustee’s Newsletter

Dear Main Street Yoga Friends and Peace Through Yoga Friends, I am both thrilled and proud to introduce myself as the new owner of Peace Through Yoga, a well-established and respected yoga entity in our community. One week ago I left my position as a Senior Vice President of a large non-profit organization. As much as I enjoyed my 13-year career at this institution, I have always held the desire to operate an independent business. In September 2013, while still maintaining my full-time position, I opened Main Street Yoga in Speedway. Since the moment of its inception, this studio has brought me more

joy than I ever could have anticipated. Around the same time that my professional career was taking off, Sally Brown Bassett left a successful corporate career and realized her dream with the opening of Peace through Yoga, a studio nestled among the trees in Eagle Creek Park. In 2012 she opened a second location in the heart of Zionsville. What happens when two yogis get together? This may sound like the opening line of a joke, but for these two women it was the opportunity for each to pursue her life's desires. My purchase of Sally's two studios allows me to dive into the development and integration of three yoga studios. While Sally focuses on her passion, the Peace Through Yoga Foundation, a not-for-profit charity that aids underprivileged children in Costa Rica and India, I am fulfilling my dream of entrepreneurship while at the same time developing a community of people with shared interests. New ownership inherently comes with change. My intent is that your experience will remain comfortable and familiar, and that any additions will enhance and broaden your yoga practice. Rest assured that the teachers and classes you love will not change. Sally built a solid foundation and a bustling business. With the strength of our numbers and multiple locations, we are well-positioned to bring more workshops and specialty programs to our community. I welcome your thoughts on programs or classes that would be of interest to you. I look forward to practicing yoga and getting to know each of you. We share an interest in a practice that has spanned millennia and continents. Already we have something wonderful in common. In closing I would like to share a quote that has motivated me for many years. It is attributed to the 13th century German philosopher Meister Eckhart: "And suddenly you know: It's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings." I have trust in the outstanding staff at Peace through Yoga and Main Street Yoga studios. I have trust in our growing community of yogis. And I have trust in that which led me to this very moment of writing this note to you. Namaste,

~Mindi, Founder of Main Street Yoga, 1032 Main St. in Speedway (next to Yogulatte)
