PROLOGUE

FADE IN:

EXT. GOTHAM CITY - NIGHT

Rats rummage through garbage in a dark alley.

From around the corner two ROBBERS dressed in black and

wearing skull masks burst onto the scene running, each

carrying a handgun.

The two robbers stop and take off their skull mask to catch a

breath.

ROBBER 1

What the hell was that?

ROBBER 2

I dont know, someone must have

leaked some information.

A noise is heard above on a fire escape.

Robber 1 and Robber 2 look up and fire shots toward the fire

escape.

A cat scurries along the fire escape.

ROBBER 1

Damn it.

ROBBER 2

Come on lets go.

Several small metal capsules are thrown from above and land

around the two robbers, they burst into thick smoke and

numerous green lasers from the capsules lock onto the bodies

of the two robbers.

ROBBER 1

Move, move!

From above a man wearing a BATMAN like costume with a huge

black cape descends upon the unknowing two robbers.

The two robbers randomly start shooting everywhere.

All of a sudden the gun shots stop and the sound of two

bodies hitting the ground is heard.

A grappling hook shoots out from the smoke and the Batman

flies up onto a rooftop.

The smoke clears and the two robbers are laying unconscious

on the ground, police sirens are heard coming in from the

distance.

The Batman is on a rooftop holding his side, blood is on his

hand and he drops to one knee in pain.

EXT. WAYNE MANOR - NIGHT

A sleek black armored sports car races toward Wayne Manor

which can be seen in the distance.

INT. BAT CAVE - NIGHT

Without seeing his face, DAVID WAYNE holds his side as hes

bleeding.

David throws what looks to be a Batman mask onto a lab table

and starts typing on a holographic computer keyboard.

David gets up on an operating table and three robotic arms

are activated and start to tend to his wound.

INT. BAT CAVE - LATER

With one side of his ribs bandaged, David walks to the

elevator and presses the up button.

INT. WAYNE MANOR - NIGHT

The elevator light on the outside of the elevator door lights

up 1.

The elevator door opens and we see young Davids handsome yet

boyish face and short black messy hair.

INT. WAYNE MANOR/LIBRARY - NIGHT

We see the back of an elderly BRUCE WAYNE and his white hair

as he looks through some bookshelves.

David passes by the doorway of the library.

BRUCE (O.S.)

David?

David stops in his tracks and turns around, slowly goes into

the library with a look of disappointment.

DAVID

Yeah?

BRUCE (O.S.)

Rough night?

DAVID

I dont think this new composite

fiber worked well on the suit.

BRUCE (O.S.)

Im sure youll get it right soon.

DAVIDStriking fear into the hearts of

criminals wont work if I keep

getting injured, it always seems to

be something.

Let me ask you a question, what do

you think is the opposite of fear?

DAVIDI guess it would be courage.

Bruces hand picks up a picture frame.

The frame is very worn with many scratches, a crack is in the

corner of the glass, the picture is of a young Bruce Wayne

with his parents.

BRUCE (O.S.)

I beg to differ about that.

FADE IN:

EXT. CEMETERY - DAY

TITLE ON SCREEN: PRESENT DAY

On an overcast day, teenage BRUCE WAYNE visits his parents

grave while a middle aged ALFRED PENNYWORTH waits in the

distance next to a black limousine.

Bruce gets down on one knee, places a bouquet of flowers on

each of his parents graves.

BRUCE

Hi Mom, hi Dad, Ill be eighteen in

a few days, what do you know, Ill

finally get to be an adult.

(smiles)

I hope youre proud of me, I know I

didnt accomplish much yet but I

will, I wont fail you, I promise.

(beat)

I miss you, I miss you a lot.

EXT. WAYNE CHEMICAL PLANT - DAY

Workers walk to work toward the Wayne Chemical Plant, located

in the industrial section of Gotham city.

JACK NAPIER, a skinny man in his early thirties walks toward

the plant entrance.

INT. WAYNE CHEMICAL PLANT/LOBBY - CONTINUOUS

Jacks cell phone rings in his pocket, he picks up.

(on phone)

Hello?

EXT. APARTMENT/DRUG LAB - CONTINUOUS

DEE, a large intimidating male in his twenties, wears a dark

colored velour jumpsuit and gold jewelry.

In the background are several people sitting at a table

working in a make shift drug lab.

DEE

Yo Jack! Its me Dee.

INTERCUT - TELEPHONE CONVERSATION

JACK

(surprised)

Dee?

(beat)

Hey.

DEE

You dont sound too happy to hear

from me.

JACK

No, no its not that, its still

early and I didnt have my coffee

yet.

DEE

Yeah, I heard youre a big shot

chemical engineer now.

JACK

Yeah, it pays the bills.

Listen, I went into business for

myself and Im looking for you to

do some consulting on some new

products.

JACK

I dont think thats for me

anymore.

DEE

Come on man, you were great in the

lab, making some quality product.

Me and you could rule this fucking

town.

JACK

Im sorry Dee, I just have to

concentrate on what Im doing over

here.

DEE

Oh yeah? Alright but listen when

you do get that itch give me a

call.

JACK

Take care Dee.

Jack ends the call, continues walking toward the plant

entrance.

EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING - DAY

JIM GORDON, young, clean cut with a medium build loads a U-Haul moving truck with BARBARA KEAN, a young attractive

redhead.

JIM

Well, I think that does it.

Finally, so were ready to go?

Jim looks up at the apartment.

JIM

Yeah, Im going miss this place.

BARBARA

Me too.

JIM

Alright, lets hit the road.

Jim and Barbara get into the U-Haul truck.

EXT. HIGHWAY - DAY

U-Haul truck shoots goes down the highway as it leaves the

Chicago skyline in the background.

EXT. LACROSSE FIELD - DAY

Bruce practices with the boys varsity LACROSSE TEAM, wears a

blue jersey with the name Trinity on the front

EVAN VAN COHEN, a lacrosse player walks up to Bruce.

EVAN

Yo Bruce.

BRUCE

Hey whats up.

EVAN

Ready for the game? Man I cant

wait to lift that trophy up next

week against Horace Mann.

You know its fifteen years since

Trinitys won the state.

EVANAnd were going to be part of it.

COACH GERHART, the tough as nails middle aged lacrosse coach,

notices Bruce and Evan talking.

COACH GERHART

Ladies! Sorry to disturb your

little chat but can we get our

asses in gear!

BRUCE

Sorry coach, Evan was asking me for

some tips.

EVAN

Whatever.

COACH GERHART

Ground ball drill right now, Bruce

you attack, Evan defends, lets go!

Bruce and Evan get in position with the ball on the ground

between them.

EVAN

You cant get past me.

COACH GERHART

Ground ball!

Bruce makes a quick move to scoop up the ball with his stick.

Evan gives a hard stick check across Bruces chest.

Bruce steps back, gives a hard stiff arm to Evans face mask.

Bruce pivots the other way and blows past Evan, shoots the

ball and scores against the goalie.

Lucky.

BRUCE

Yeah, I guess I get lucky all thetime then.

INT. WAYNE CHEMICAL PLANT/LAB - CONTINUOUS

Jack enters into a large laboratory with long tables and

various chemical testing machines spread through out the

room.

STEVE WYATT, man in his fifties, wearing a lab coat sits at

one of the tables on a computer typing away.

JACK

Hey Steve, sorry Im late.

Jack changes into his lab coat.

STEVE

Hey! Morning Jack. Did you watch

that video conference with Lucious

Fox this morning?

JACK

No, what happened?

STEVE

Another wave of layoffs.

JACK

What? I thought we just went

through one a few months ago?

STEVE

Yep, but looks like Wayne

Chemicals not done yet.

Man, thats scary, this economy is

no joke. Even the drug dealers are

filing for unemployment, then you

know its really getting bad.

STEVE

Heh! Im telling you, you should be

a stand up comedian.

JACK

Really, you like my jokes?

STEVE

Im just kidding youre jokes are

terrible, stick to your day job.

JACK

Yeah, thanks.

Steve notices whats playing on the TV hanging in the corner

of the room, grabs the remote.

STEVE

Look, the video conference is on TV

again.

LUCIOUS FOX, an African American man in his fifties, dressed

in a business suit appears on TV.

LUCIOUS FOX

...it is my sad duty today to

announce that Wayne Chemical

Corporation a subsidiary of Wayne

Industries will be further reducing

its head count this year due tothe rough economic climate. We have

exhausted our other cost-cutting

measures and have just lost a major

contract to our main competitor Lex

Corp.

BACK TO SCENE

JACK

Thats just great, if I get cut

that means Ill get a whopping two

weeks pay, maybe not even.

STEVE

(to TV)

Other cost-cutting measures? How

about you take a pay cut Mr. Fox?

Unbelievable!

A phone on the desk rings.

JACK

I got it.

Jack picks up the phone.

JACK (CONTD)

Hello?

(beat)

Yes, this is him.

(beat)

I see.

(beat)

OK, Ill be up there in a few

minutes.

Jack looks like he just saw a ghost, stares at the phone as

he hangs up.

STEVE

Who was that?

What?

Steve takes a deep breath, puts his hand on his forehead,

eyes closed, bows head.

STEVE (CONTD)

Damn.

EXT. POLICE PRECINCT PARKING LOT - DAY

A police car pulls into parking lot, on the door it reads

GCPD Gotham City Police Department.

The car door opens and FRANK MCMANUS, a tall male police

officer with a heavy build steps out.

Jim comes out of the Police Precinct, puts on his jacket.

FRANK

(at Jim)

Hey, you Jim Gordon?

Jim notices Frank and walks over.

JIM

Yeah, you Frank?

FRANK

Yeah.

Frank extends his hand and gives Jim a really strong handshake.

JIM

(holds his hand)

How long have you been with Gotham?

Seven years and counting, youre

coming over from Chicago right?

JIMYeah.

FRANK

How long?

JIM

Almost a year.

FRANK

Oh yeah, so youre pretty much a

rookie then huh?

JIM

Yeah I guess so.

FRANK

Well welcome to Gotham and youre

going find out soon that Chicago is

definitely no Gotham, hop in.

INT. LOCKER ROOM - DAY

Bruce, wrapped around in a towel, rubs his blood shot eyes in

front of his locker mirror.

Evan notices Bruce next to him.

EVAN

You alright man? Getting enough

sleep?

BRUCE

Yeah, I wish, my schedules been

crazy. I think I spend more time

doing stuff outside of the

classroom then in it.

(smiles)

Is that a bad thing?

BRUCEI just need to get past this week

and the game, then Ill sleep.

Evan takes out a pill bottle and shows it to Bruce.

BRUCE (CONTD)

Seriously? Drugs? What is this?

Some kind of after school special?

EVAN

Laugh if you want, but it helps you

focus and be alert when you need it

most.

BRUCE

So what, its like a fancy caffeine

pill?

EVAN

It was custom designed for me in a

lab, keeps you up for at least

thirty-six hours and your

concentration stays sharp the whole

time.

BRUCE

No thanks.

EVAN

Alright but Rhodes Scholars dont

grow on trees you know.

INT. BROADWAY THEATRE - NIGHT

Alfred and LESLIE THOMPKINS, a middle aged woman with blond

hair watch The Phantom of the Opera.

CHRISTINE.

THE PHANTOM

EXT. BROADWAY THEATRE - NIGHT

People exit the theatre, Alfred and Leslie soon come out and

walk along the city streets.

LESLIE

God, Ive always loved that show.

ALFRED

It is certainly one of the greats,

now the original production in the

west end was definitely memorable.

LESLIE

With Brightman and Crawford?

ALFRED

(smiles)

Yes.

LESLIE

I would have died to see thatproduction, call me strange but

theres something about a moving

tragedy that just stays with you,

you know?

Alfred and Leslie walk past an alley way behind the theatre,

Leslie stops in her tracks and looks down with a somber

expression.

ALFREDLeslie, are you OK?

Leslie looks back at the alley way, Alfred looks there also

and then looks around at the surrounding area.

ALFRED (CONTD)

This place.

(beat)

That night, with the Wayne

family...

LESLIE

We should go.

ALFRED

Im so sorry, we shouldve not come

this way.

All of sudden a HOODLUM runs from around the corner carrying

a womens handbag,

The Hoodlum runs through the middle of Alfred and Leslie,

Leslie falls to the ground.

ALFRED (CONTD)

Leslie!

Alfred tends to Leslie on the ground.

ALFRED (CONTD)

(to Hoodlum)Stop!

Alfred gets up and chases the Hoodlum as he runs into the

alley.

EXT. ALLEY WAY - NIGHT

The Hoodlum notices someone is following him, turns around

takes out his gun and fires a shot.

The shot misses Alfred, he quickly gets low to the ground.

The Hoodlum turns around and keeps running.

EXT. CITY STREET - CONTINUOUS

Leslie hears the gun shot.

LESLIE

Alfred!

Leslie gets up and runs toward the alley way.

Alfred comes back out from the alley way.

ALFRED

(breathes heavily)

Im OK.

LESLIE

Thank God!

ALFRED

I have to call the police.

Alfred gets out his cell phone and starts dialing.

EXT./INT. POLICE CAR - NIGHT

Frank and Jim are driving around the theatre district when

they get a call from the DISPATCHER on the police radio.

DISPATCHER (V.O.)

Twenty four, a two eleven.

Frank picks up the radio handset.

Twenty four, go ahead.

DISPATCHER (V.O.)One ninety eight at Forty-forth,

code one.

FRANK

(to radio handset)

Twenty four copy.

(to Jim)

Here we go.

Frank turns on the police sirens, does a quick U-turn on the

street and speeds the other way.

EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT

Jack walks towards an apartment building in a less desirable

section of Gotham city.

INT. JACKS APARTMENT - NIGHT

JEANNIE, a young attractive, innocent looking girl is

preparing dinner in the small kitchen.

The door unlocks and Jack walks into the Apartment.

JEANNIE (O.S.)

Jack? Is that you?

JACK

(depressed)Hey honey.

Jeannie comes out of the kitchen to meet Jack.

JEANNIE

Hey, whats wrong?

Oh, nothing, bad day at the office.

JEANNIE

Oh, sorry to hear that, but hey Ihave some great news for you! Sit

down.

Jack takes a seat in the beaten up old sofa in the corner.

JACK

OK, actually I have some news for

you too.

JEANNIE

Do you want to go first?

JACK

No you go ahead.

JEANNIE

(touches belly)

Well, you know how...

JACK

Youre pregnant!

JEANNIE

Yes, I just tested positive today!

Jack just sits there in shock and cracks a small

uncomfortable smile.

Jeannie reaches out her arms for a hug and Jack gets up and

hugs her.

JEANNIE (CONTD)

OK, so now whats your news?

JACK

Uh... well you know how Ive always

wanted to try stand up comedy?

Yeah of course, so youre finally

going to give it a shot?

JACKYeah, and this may sound very

impulsive but I just quit my job

today to go into this full time.

JEANNIE

What? But...

JACK

I know, I know, just trust me on

this.

JEANNIE

But can we survive just on my job

at the diner? I dont know Jack.

JACK

Im sure we can, thats how

confident I am that Im going to

make it.

Jeannie looks worried, touches her belly again.

Jack moves closer to Jeannie to hold her hands.

JACK (CONTD)

Listen, everythings going to be

OK. I just need you to believe in

me.

JEANNIE

I do believe in you, but...

JACK

But what?

JEANNIE

Never mind, I know you can do it, I

know.

Jack hugs Jeannie, Jack gives a look of anxiety.

EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT

Jack walks out of his apartment complex and places a call on

his cell phone.

JACK

(into phone)

Hello?


Dee hangs out with his friends and works the street corner.

DEE

(into phone)

Well look who it is!


JACK

Hey Dee, listen do you still need

my help?

DEE

How about this, come by tonight and

Ill lay it all out, how about

that?

JACK

OK, sounds good.

DEEYou made a good decision Jack, now

lets do this.

Jack ends the call, walks toward the subway station.

EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT

A police car bursts onto the scene, breaks hard and stops in

front of Leslie and Alfred.

LESLIE

(points to alley way)

He went over there!

Frank jumps out of the police car to chase on foot.

FRANK

(to Jim)

Take the wheel, cut him off at the

other end!

Frank runs into the alley way in pursuit and Jim takes the

wheel of the car and speeds away.

LESLIE

(to Alfred)

You sure your OK?

ALFRED

Im fine, I just hope they catch

him.

EXT. ALLEY WAY - NIGHT

The Hoodlum empties out the womans handbag, grabs the cash

and puts it in his pocket.

Frank spots the Hoodlum in the alley way.

FRANKHey!

The Hoodlum starts running, comes up to a metal fence, jumps

up and climbs over.

Frank jumps up and climbs over the metal fence.

The Hoodlum turns around and shoots at Frank, Frank dodges

bullet.

Frank pulls out his gun, stops and shoots at the Hoodlums

leg.

The Hoodlum gets hit in the thigh and falls down.

Jim pulls up in the police car on the other side of alley and

jumps out with his gun drawn.

FRANK (CONTD)

Dont move! Put the gun on the

ground, now!

Frank and Jim move slowly toward the Hoodlum from opposite

sides.

FRANK (CONTD)

No sudden movements or Ill shoot.

The Hoodlum is bleeding on the ground, holds up both his

hands, one hand is still holding the gun.

FRANK (CONTD)

Put your gun on the ground now!

The Hoodlum slowly puts down the gun on the ground.

FRANK (CONTD)

Now, slide it toward me.

The Hoodlum reaches for the gun to slide it to Frank.

Frank fires multiple shots at the Hoodlum, killing him

instantly.

JIM

Frank! What the hell was that!

FRANK

He reached for the gun.

But he was going to slide it to

you!

FRANKYoure not hearing me Jim, he was

reaching for his gun, understand?

JIM

What?

Frank points his gun at Jim.

Jim is in shock.

FRANK

Were in a fucking war, either

youre on our side or their side,

you make the decision.

JIM

I cant believe this.

FRANK

All you have to believe is that he

was reaching for the gun and I shot

in self defense and theres one

less piece of shit in Gotham.

Jim places his gun back in his holster and puts his hands up.

JIM

Hey, whatever you say Frank.

INT. APARTMENT/DRUG LAB - LATE NIGHT

Jack, wearing goggles and a face make works on a chemical

compound. Test tubes, beakers, hot plates and various other

lab instruments are scattered through out the table.

Dee walks up to Jack.

Whats going on?

JACK

I think I got it, these should bebetter.

Jack shows Dee several small green pills in his hand.

DEE

You made them green huh?

JACK

Yeah, I thought that would be a

nice touch, you can think of the

name.

DEE

Let me see.

(beat)

Well call these bad boys the Green

Mile.

JACK

Whys that?

DEE

I had one of my boys try your first

batch and he was doing some

supernatural shit, laughing,

foaming at the mouth, trying to run

through a wall...

JACK

What?! Did he get hurt?

DEE

Alls I know is if you get this

under control like I think you did,

its going to be the hottest shit

on the street.

INT. BRUCES BEDROOM - LATE NIGHT

Bruce burns the midnight oil, several books, notes and coffee

mugs are scattered through out his desk.

Bruce rubs his blood shot eyes and stares at his books and

then at his cell phone.

Bruce takes a deep breath and dials his cell phone.

INT. EVANS BEDROOM - NIGHT

Evan is wide awake and feverishly studies at his desk.

His cell phone rings on his desk.

EVAN

Bruce, whats going on man.

BRUCE (V.O.)

(over phone, filtered)

Hey, I must be going crazy cause

Im about to ask you about those

pills.

EVAN

You know what, Im glad you called,

Im running low and I gotta head

out to pick some up.

BRUCE (V.O.)

(over phone, filtered)

What, pick some up now?

EVANYeah, Ill swing by to get you.

Evan ends the call, grabs his car keys and heads out the

door.

Bruce stares at this cell phone as he hangs up, gets up from

his desk and goes out the door.

INT./EXT. CAR - NIGHT

Evan drives his black Mercedes with Bruce in the passenger

seat, they enter into a ghetto neighborhood.

BRUCE

So I assume were not headed to a

pharmacy?

EVAN

Relax, I know these guys, they make

some quality stuff.


Evans car pulls up to a side street.

A few young men dressed in loose T-shirts, NFL jerseys, and

athletic jumpsuits occupy the street corner in front of a

bodega.

Dee notices Evan and walks up to his car.

DEE

My man Evan, I was just thinking

about you.

EVAN

Hey whats up Dee.

DEE

Before you ask me for anything, doI make some good shit or what?

EVAN

Youre right, those uppers hit the

spot.

Thats what Im talking about, so

EVANLet me get two.

Dee takes out two pill bottles wrapped up in aluminum foil

from his pocket and hands them to Evan.

DEE

Let me ask you guys a question, you

like to laugh and have a good time?

EVAN

Yeah who doesnt?

Dee takes out a small clear zip lock bag with a small green

pill inside.

DEE

Its called the green mile. This is

some military grade shit right

here. Hottest thing on the street

right now.

EVAN

Im not sure about those.

DEE

Hey you know I stand behind my

product, this ones on me and if

you like it come back and Ill hook

you up alright?

Dee takes out another small clear zip lock bag with a greenpill.

DEE (CONTD)

Ill hook up your friend too.

Evan looks at Bruce, who is uncomfortable, Evan looks back at

Dee reluctantly.

INT. JIMS APARTMENT - LATE NIGHT

Jim walks into his small apartment, filled with unpacked

boxes.

Barbara sits on a futon, watches the NEWS ANCHOR report the

nightly news on the TV.

NEWS ANCHOR

(on TV)

...luckly both police officers were

unharmed, one of the officers was

able to shoot and kill the suspect

as he was reaching for his gun...

BACK TO SCENE

Barbara turns to Jim with a very somber expression.

BARBARA

I assume you know about this.

JIM

Yeah.

(beat)

I was one of the officers there.

Barbara is upset, places hands over her face.

Jim walks over and to Barbara on the futon and gets down on

one knee to comfort her.

BARBARA

(tearful)

Why did we have to come here?

JIM

You have to be strong for me OK?

Jim hugs Barbara.

Frank gives an interview at the crime scene on TV.

...I wasnt looking to be a hero

tonight, I was just doing my job...

INT. LOCKER ROOM - DAY

The Lacrosse Players are all dressed and sitting on a bench,

coach Gerhart walks in the middle to give a speech.

COACH GERHART

OK gentlemen, remember this day,

remember this game. All the hard

work youve put into this season

comes down to today. If any player

in here does not have one hundred

percent confidence that we will win

today, then get the hell out of

this locker room.

Bruce wipes his nose and notices some blood coming out, he

quickly wipes his hand to conceal it and presses a small

towel to his nose.

COACH GERHART (CONTD)

Failure is not an option today,

especially for you seniors, this

will be your legacy. If you leave

it all on the field I will

personally guarantee victory. I

expect nothing less. OK, lets

bring it in!

The Lacrosse Players team gather around in a circle with

hands together.

COACH GERHART (CONTD)

The Trinity High School CHEERLEADERS are leading the hundreds

in attendance at the State Championships.

Bruce reaches for a pass from Evan and takes a crushing hit

from a player on the opposing team.

Bruce rolls around the ground in pain.

REFEREE blows whistle.

Coach Gerhart rushes over to see how Bruce is.


Bruce is sitting on the bench with a bloody towel on his nose

and ice wrapped around his knee.

Bruce throws the towel, gets up and walks over to Coach

Gerhart.

Dee reluctantly takes out a what looks like a sandwich

Im just trying to control my

Frank looks at the foil package and looks back at Dee.

Dee raises both hands.

Scoreboard shows the score tied with seven points each and

ten seconds left and counting.

Bruce streaks across the field with the ball, performs a nice

juke move on DEFENDER 1, stiff arms DEFENDER 2 and passes the

ball to Evan.

as he makes a nice cut to get away from DEFENDER 3. He shoots

Bruce is lying face down on his bed passed out with his large

gym bag and lacrosse stick next to him.

Bruce slowly wakes up and struggles to get his cell phone out

of his pocket.

The Trinity high school lacrosse team along with other

STUDENTS and COACHES are celebrating their championship, the

Bruce holds Madisons bloody body while a crowd of onlookers

grow in the streets.

Several PEOPLE dressed in formal black make their way into

the church.

INT. SAINT BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH - CONTINUOUS

Bruce, dressed in a black suit, attends the wake for Madison

Parker, and sits next to Alfred and Evan.

MINISTER CLARK is in the middle of giving the eulogy.

MINISTER CLARK

...during this time of grieving we

must all remember to not be

fearful. Do not let fear hold you

captive, for the absence of faith

is fear so therefore the opposite

of fear... is faith. It is with

this faith that we know Madison is

Bruce looks over at MADISONS PARENTS in the front row as

they are quietly weeping.

Bruce starts to look very ill, gets up from his seat and

Alfred looks on with concern.

Bruce bursts into the Mens Restroom and into a stall.

Bruce gets down, hugs the toilet and throws up.

Jack sits on the sofa, watches a stand up comedy show on the

The Audience is quiet and then slowly starts to boo.

The Club Manager is by the side of the stage shaking his

Bruce races through a traffic light just as it turns red.

Jim and Frank get out of the police car, they walk over to

Bruces car which is pulled over.

Bruce gets all the requested documents and hands it to Jim.

FRANK

Ill run it.

Jim hands the documents to Frank, Frank goes back to police

car to run Bruces information.

Evan is in the car and recognizes the pill bottle.

Frank throws the pill bottle to Jim.

Jim looks at the pill bottle, opens and smells it.

JIM

We should get these to the lab.

FRANK

Youre coming with us.

Frank handcuffs Bruce.

people who accidently ran a red

The door opens to a large office, filled with wood accents,

stacked bookshelves and a large desk, Alfred walks in.

JOHN GOLD, 50s, heavy set with mostly white hair stands up

to greet Alfred.

JOHN

(smiles)

Alfred, good to see you again.

ALFRED

(smiles)

John how are you.

JOHNIm good, please take a seat.

John takes a seat at his desk, Alfred sits opposite.

JOHN (CONTD)

Exactly, theres going to be a

series of meetings with Mr. Fox and

John takes out a small lock box from his drawer, unlocks it

and takes out an envelope.

JOHN

Here it is.

John hands the envelope to Alfred, he examines it.

ALFRED

JOHN

Yes it is, when Thomas Wayne was

still alive he took some of my

advice with the estate planning,

but he took it a step further and

wrote a letter for Bruce to open up

on his eighteenth birthday just in

case anything happened to him, Godrest his soul.

ALFRED

I see, do you have any idea what

might be in it?

Bruce is dead asleep, passed out on his bed, the shades are

all turned down with small amounts of light coming through.

A light knock is heard on Bruces door.

Alfred walks in with a tray of coffee, bread and fruit.

ALFRED

Master Bruce its nearly noon, I

think you should be getting up now.

Alfred raises all the shades in the room, sunlight fills the

room.

Bruce slowly gets up from his bed and reaches for the

coffee.

BRUCE

Ahh... my head.

ALFRED

I suggest you get some exercise andthen take a nice long shower.

BRUCE

Right.

Alfred leaves the room.

As Bruce is sipping on his coffee he stares at some family

photo frames on his desk of when he was young with his

parents.

BRUCE (CONTD)Why?

Bruce gets up from his bed and grabs one of the photo

frames.

BRUCE (CONTD)

Why!

Out of anger Bruce throws the frame to the wall, smashing it,

then takes the black plastic lining out of his small garbage

bin and throws all of his family photo frames in it and

storms out of the room.

INT. WAYNE MANOR/KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

Alfred hears noises from Bruces room, concerned he decides

to go see what is going on.

EXT. WAYNE MANOR/GARDEN - LATER

Bruce, carrying a sledge hammer and a black plastic bag walks

to the edge of the huge finely kept botanical garden behind

Wayne Manor.

INT. BRUCES BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Alfred walks into Bruces bedroom to discover hes not there,

he takes a look outside his window and notices Bruce walkingin the garden carrying a sledgehammer and plastic bag.

Alfred quickly walks out of he room to pursue Bruce.

EXT. WAYNE MANOR/GARDEN - CONTINUOUS

Behind some tall hedges Bruce spots a boarded up sinkhole,

throws down the plastic bag and starts smashing the wooden

boards with the sledge hammer and exposes the deep sinkhole.

ALFRED (O.S.)

(from distance)

Master Bruce!

Bruce turns around when he hears Alfreds voice, he turns

back around and trips on the edge of the sink hole and falls

in but manages to grab the edge.

Sounds of bats below in the sinkhole can be heard as Bruce

continues to hold on.

Alfred runs toward the back of the garden.

Bruce struggles to hold on, slowly starts to lose his grip.

Alfred shows up to discover Bruce.

ALFRED (CONTD)

Take my hand!

Alfred grabs Bruces hand and pulls up Bruce and saves him

from falling into the sinkhole.

Alfred and Bruce sit on the dirt, catching their breath.

ALFRED (CONTD)

Forgive me if Im being too direct,

but what the bloody hell were you

doing!

BRUCE

Trying to get rid of some memories.

ALFRED

What?

Bruce looks at the black plastic bag.

picture frames.

ALFRED (CONTD)

BRUCE

I dont know what to do Alfred, you

Why does death always seem to

follow me, why?

ALFRED

Id be lying to you if said I knew

why certain things happen to

certain people... but death follows

all of us Master Bruce, we would be

fools to think we can control our

lives.

(beat)

If we could then faith would not

(tearful)

After all this time, its still

hard to except that theyre never

Alfred puts his hand on Bruces shoulder.

The lock quietly turns and Jim sneaks into the apartment with

a bouquet of roses.

Barbara is in the kitchen doing the dishes.

Jim walks behind Barbara, gets close and pops his hand in

front of her to show her the roses.

BARBARA

(startled)Oh my God!

Barbara breaks the cup she is washing and quickly turns

around.

JIM

Hi!

Barbara tears up, fights her simultaneous emotions of joy and

fear.

JIM (CONTD)

Barbara its me, you OK?

Barbara tears off a paper towel to wipe her tears and goes to

the futon to sit down.

Jim follows her.

JIM (CONTD)

Sorry if I scared you, here

these are for you.

BARBARA

(cracks a smile)

Thank you.

JIM

Whats wrong.

BARBARAWhat if it wasnt you Jim?

JIM

What do you mean?

What if you didnt come home one

night and what if a person broke in

here?

Jim pauses, takes a deep breath.

JIM

Im so sorry you have to go through

this. You deserve better but

please, dont let this fear rule

over your life.

BARBARA

How can I not?

JIM

You just have to have faith, faith

that Im going to come home every

night.

BARBARA

But what if...

JIM

I do come home.

Jim quickly raises the bouquet of flowers close to her face,

only Barbaras eyes can be seen.

JIM (CONTD)

Come on, have some faith.

Barbara cracks a small smile, they both embrace.

INT. JACKS APARTMENT - NIGHT

Door unlocks, Jack enters apartment.

Jeannie is asleep on the sofa covered in a blanket, TV is on.

Jeannie?

Jeannie does not hear Jack.

Jack walks closer to Jeannie.

JACK (CONTD)

Jeannie?

Jeannie slowly wakes up, sees Jack, gets up from sofa.

JEANNIE

So how did you do tonight?

Jack takes out the thick white envelope and shows it to

Jeannie.

JACK

(smiles)

I killed them.

Jeannie takes the envelope, opens it and starts counting the

money.

JEANNIE

Oh my God, Jack.

JACK

Seems like they loved me and want

me back.

Jeannie hugs Jack.

JEANNIE

I always had faith in you, I knewyou could do it.

Jacks smile disappears and is replaced by a somber

expression as he embraces Jeannie.

EXT. WAYNE MANOR/PATIO - NIGHT

Bruce is staring out into the sky while sitting on a chair on

a beautiful stone patio overlooking the gardens behind Wayne

Manor.

Alfred walks up to Bruce and hands him a sealed envelope.

BRUCE

Whats this?

Bruce stands up and holds the envelope.

ALFRED

Happy Birthday Master Bruce.

The envelope reads to our son, Bruce.

Bruce is in shock, he quickly opens the envelope and reads

the letter.

Bruces eyes water up, he cracks a smile, Bruce carefully

folds the letter and looks up at the sky.

BRUCE

Thank you.

Bruce folds the letter and places it on the patio table next

to a frame with a picture of when he was young with his

parents, the frame has a crack on the corner of the glass.

Bruce walks back into Wayne Manor.

FADE OUT.
