Editor’s Column

Well, It’s Winter again, even thoughthe calendar says Fall. I had the occa-sion to visit Santa Fe, NM with theLexington Group. The Lexington Groupis an organization of railroad and trans-portation executives as well as writers, historians and researchers. The high-light of the convention was a daysexcursion on the Cumbres & Toltec nar-row gauge. We also took a ride on theregional Rail Runner from Santa Fe toBelén and back. Photos are below andon page 11.

The Friday before my trip I “officially”retired, although I said I would go backin April if we had not sold the house andmoved to Florida by then.

Although I get laid off at the end ofevery October, it seems different thistime. So what do I do since I am “offi-cially” retired? The same as always, research for books, write and build kits. Ihave started my book on the ChicagoMilk Shed, which is where Chicago gotits milk. I am still looking for photos ofMilk sheds, processing plants and milkcars in and around Chicago.I was told that 110 people are sub-

scribed to the Waybill from otherregions. Thank you for your support.

You may have noticed that thisissue has more than the usual amountof pages. That is because it is theannual election issue. This year we arevoting on four directors-at-large. Theirbiographies are on pages 5, 6 and 10and the ballot is on page 8. Please takethe time to vote.

The Regional Meet will be in Peoriathis spring. I hope to see all of youthere. Meet details are on page 4 andthere is a registration form on page 7.

I attended the Board of Directorsmeeting at Trainfest, and have a fewthings to report:They are investigating the use of

remote clinics, using Skype or anotherform of communication over the inter-net.The 2021 convention will be in

Rockford, Illinois and the 2022 conven-tion will be with two other divisions, theNorth Central and Mid-central. Thehotel will be the Marriott on the eastside of Indianapolis on 21st Street. Thedate is May 18-21. This will be a Superconvention, spread out over four days, with tours, clinics, operating sessionsand lots of other things to do, like amini-National. Stay tuned for moredetails.Speaking of Trainfest, both

Kalmbach and Model Railroad Hobbyistwere streaming live on Saturday. Thereis footage on youtube and MRH.com.

Mid West Region NMRA –Winter 2019

Presidentʼs ReportSteve Studley President, MWR

Itʼs Modeling TimeFor most of us in the Midwest Region, fall has

nearly ended. Here in south-central Indiana, theleaves are mostly down and weʼve seen a few flakesof snow. Farther north in the Region, there havebeen appreciable snows that let us know winter isfast approaching or has already made its presenceknown. Therefore, for most all of us, it is now “mod-eling time”. Whether you are spending your modelingtime building or expanding a new, or existing layout,or working on the details that help to “complete”(whatever that means) your railroad model, there isno time like the present to head to the layout and/orworkbench to accomplish those tasks.

At the time this article is being written, I amworking on a contest entry for an upcoming CentralIndiana Division meet. I have eight days to finish thedisplay and four of those days will be spent travelingto and attending Trainfest and the MWR Board ofDirectors meeting. I will be sure to pack a small toolbox with all(?) the supplies I will need to continuework on the display even while I am an umpty-bunchof miles from my usual workbench. This idea workedto perfection during a trip north to attend the MichianaDivisionʼs “Training Day” activity. By going up a dayearly, I not only saved a very early morning drive, butwas able to use the evening in my hotel room toadvantage. That spare time allowed me to cut thenecessary styrene pieces to length for the display. The job required minimal tools, so it was easy to packonly those tools needed for the task. I try not to packeverything from my workbench on these occasions, but do customize the tool box contents for the one ortwo projects I might work on while away from home.

Included in the tool box are: a chopper for cut-ting wood and styrene to length, a small cutting mat,

a padded box containing machinistsʼ squares and a6” scale, 12” HO scale rule, glues appropriate for theproject, and cutting tools. When working with glues, Ido so on glass. On my workbench I have a decentsized piece of 1/4” thick glass. This is too large tohaul around so I visited a “dollar store” and bought a4X6” picture frame with glass. The glass that comeswith these frames is quite thin, < 0.060”. At the samestore, I also purchased a strip of non-skid shelf liningto keep items from sliding around on the hotel desk. The glass sits on this when in use and is kept in theframe with cardboard on each side while in transit. The idea is to only pack those items you believeyouʼll need, and, if possible, to utilize smalleramounts and sizes to keep the tool box small. So farthis has worked well for me.

Hopefully, you, too, will be able to spend timeworking on railroad model projects in the comingmonths. Remember, though, you donʼt need to headto the train room and hibernate there till spring. Getout once in a while and visit with friends at model rail-road meets and activities or find some operating ses-sions you would like to attend.

Speaking of model railroading activities, thefollowing comes at a time when you should be com-ing out of hibernation: The MWR will hold ourRegional Convention, Peoria Rocket 2020, this yearin – you guessed it – Peoria, IL. The convention willbe hosted by the Illinois Valley and Illinois TerminalDivisions. Dates are May 14–17, 2020 and furtherinformation may be found on the conventionʼs web-site: www.peoriarocket2020.org

Be sure to check back often as additionalinformation will continue to be added to the site.In the meantime – back to the layout!Steve

Clinics, Education and Information Sharingfor Members

Traditional clinic presentations now usuallyinclude projected information and sometimes supple-mented with live demonstrations. We need clinicsthat can be reused in additional venues as well asdevelop methods to provide educational material innew ways using newer tools.

Some of the tools to explore include develop-ing a simple searchable list of past clinics availablefor repeat presentation. An improved ways is neededfor individuals and groups to request educationalinformation on specific topics. We also will testremote presentation of clinics including Power Pointtype slides with question and answer opportunities.Comments, suggestions and ideas are welcome andyou can contact Eric Peterson at 317-947-4829 [email protected].

2018 Election Biographies forDirectors-at-LargeYes, it is once again election time. Up for election arefour seats for Director-at Large. Please vote to showyour support for the region. The ballot is on page 7.

Midwest Region Director-at-Large.Jim Allen, Fox Valley Division

I have been involved inmodel railroading on and off formore than 50 years.

It started with a batteryoperated tinplate set, pro-gressed to American Flyer andsettled with HO with a dabblingin On3 and G.

My career path as anIndustrial Designer has allowedme to not only work in corporate and consultingoffices but to also run my own freelance business. Ihave been involved in the designs of everything fromsmall consumer products to heavy earth movingequipment. As a freelance designer I have been ableto combine my passions for design and model rail-roading. Alco Models, McKeen Models, Overland,Walthers, Circuitron, Magnuson Models and GCLaserare just a few of the companies in the Model RailroadIndustry that I have done design, drafting, patternwork, model building and diorama design and con-struction.

As a NMRA member I have participated inand placed in a number of National and RegionalConvention model contests. I have achieved an APCertificate for Model Railroad Author, Master Builder-Motive Power, Chief Dispatcher. AssociationVolunteer and Association Official.

What is important to me as a Director is topromote the NMRA and build membership. In anattempt to accomplish this goal the Fox Valley Div., incooperation with the Du Page Div., have been man-ning a NMRA membership table at the monthly DuPage train Show. With our Timesaver switching layoutand our commercial display we have been able todraw enough attention to generate new interest in theNMRA, especially among younger modelers. I willcontinue this effort especially with the 20 thru 40 yearold age group who will be the future of the NMRA.

Midwest Region Director-at-Large.Gary Children, WISE Division

I am a candidate forDirector at Large of theMidwest Region of theNMRA. I would like to runanother term as Director atLarge. In the past I havebeen regional president, Vicepresident, and model andPhoto Chair for the region.

There are severalthings between the region and division that need tobe worked out. National also has come up with cer-tain things such as the 501c3 tax exemption thatneed to be addressed. We, as a region, can workthese things out with the help of all regional people.

I am a life member of NMRA and I model theWisconsin Central, Southern and Santa Fe in Sgauge. I have been railroading since age 5 with aLionel train set given to me for Christmas. At age 15 Ichanged to HO gauge and at age 55 I changed to Sgauge. I also enjoyed helping restore car #26 at theEast Troy Trolley Museum.Thank for your support.Gary E. Children

Midwest Region Director-at-Large.Eric Peterson, Central Indiana Division

My interest in modelrailroading and railroads is dueto building models and attend-ing NMRA activities with myFather in the North CentralRegion. I am a life memberand support the NMRAbecause it is the organizationfor our hobby, not only provid-ing standards, recommended practices, publications, contests, and achievement awards but more impor-tantly the social and educational activities we enjoy.

We recently moved from Jacksonville, FL toCarmel, IN to be near family. I was active in theSunshine Region including serving as the NorthernDivision Superintendent and SSR Board. TheNorthern Division organized quarterly division meet-ings in the Jacksonville area including clinics, showand tell, and local club updates for area modelers.

We have also had layout open houses, club visits, prototype field trips and some operating sessions.

My modeling started in HO and I have beenmodeling in O scale two rail since 1971. My sectionallayout is now in the 6th different home due to workrelocations.

I have also been active in the NMRAAchievement Program completing Author, Sceneryand Electrical Certificates. I look forward to beinginvolved on the Midwest Region.

Midwest Region Director-at-Large.Walt Herrick, Fox Valley Division

I have had an interest in trains since I was atoddler growing up in CrystalLake, Illinois. My first train setwas a basic American Flyer 4-4-2 steamer set I received atChristmas when I was 6. I con-tinued with Flyer until I was ateenager. At that time, Iswitched over to HO. I droppedout of the hobby in high schooland college, but returned rightafter college after moving to Cincinnati in 1973 tostart my first full time job. Iʼve been active in thehobby since then joining the NMRA in 1995. Ibecame active in the Fox Valley Division in 2011when I became editor of its Semaphore newsletterand a board member, positions I still hold today. Ibecame the MWRʼs Photographer in 2016 and PhotoContest Chair in 2017. I am running for Director atLarge to further serve the NMRA and its mission topromote and serve our great hobby.

Midwest Region Director-at-Large.Michael David Roderick, Central IndianaDivision

I am running for theDirector at Large for the MidwestRegion. I am fifty (50) years oldand have enjoyed trains most ofmy life. My father & grandfa-therʼs collected n-scale and HOtrains when I was a child and Ihave some of their trains today. Icurrently model in HO scaletrains.

My Second Favorite Day of the Year(excerpted from a November 2013 FVD Semaphorearticle)by Walt Herrick

From the time I was ten to about fourteenyears old in the early 1960's, the Sunday beforeThanksgiving was a special day of the year for me. Itwas on that day my dad would take me to the annualValley Model Railroad Club's Open House in SouthElgin, Illinois. For four years, the trip to the ValleyModel Railroad Clubʼs HO layout was a highly antici-pated event, second only to Christmas in my mind.

I'd go to work on my dad early in November.“Can we go to the Elgin Model Train Open Houseagain this year, dad? It's coming up in a couple ofweeks, you know.” I'd ask at dinner in front of thewhole family hoping he'd say “yes” right away and I'dhave witnesses. His reply was always the standardparental response, “We'll see.” But, inevitably dadwould give his consent.

The ride over to the club was filled with highanticipation. We always went on Sunday in the lateafternoon when the sun was low in the sky. SouthElgin was only about a 35 minute drive from Crystal

Midwest Region NMRAWaybill Winter 2019 page 10

Page 11: Waybill - mwr-nmra.org · Midwest Region NMRA Waybill Winter2019 page 2 The WAYBILL Editor DavidJ.LeiderMMR 601N.ElmhurstRd. ProspectHts.IL60070 847-253-7484 sooauthor@netzero.net

Lake, but for a kid, the ride seemed to take forever. The club was located in the old Chicago

Aurora & Elgin electric line's Clintonville station out inthe country in South Elgin. I thought it was the perfectplace to have a model railroad club. The club'sentrance was in the back of the station.

In the early 1960's upon entering the club, youwere greeted by the inside of a huge nine foot tallmountain. All you could see was the back of themountain with its chicken wire, burlap and white plas-ter scenery base.

The layout room was typically packed and theaisles narrow so getting out from behind the moun-tain could take several minutes. As soon as you cameout, the club's full array of trains, scenery, buildings, signals and track came into view. Track. I neverdreamed there could be so much track on a modelrailroad! My little 5 x 9 foot American Flyer layoutshad a small fraction of the track the Valley Club had. There must have been a half dozen different longroutes with electric switches (turnouts) and lighted, operating signals. Then there were the freight yards, industrial sidings, narrow gauge line, bridges, andtrestles. And on all of this were running amazingtrains of every shape and size. Steam, diesel, freight, passenger, and trolleys—they all were there. Theback drop for all the railroading action was westernscenery with the huge “Doorway Mountain” as the

focal point. Locomotive servicing facilities, townscenes and industries added to the layoutʼs magic.

One year I got to go up into the second floorcontrol tower of the Valley layout. It just about blewmy little twelve year old mind. Guys running trainswith head sets, 6 or 7 throttles and big control panelswith hundreds of lights, it seemed. Now this wasmodel railroading!

My time spent at the Valley Model RailroadClub's Open House always ended too soon. But Icame home with a lot of inspiration to get me throughthe long winter months of kid model railroading.Today the Valley Model Railroad Club is still goingstrong in the old Clintonville station.

The layout has been changed over the yearsand “Doorway Mountain” is now gone. Their annualOpen House is coming up in a few weeks. I just mightgo for old times sake.
