ow about a group hug

and then we all get

back to work. Well,

something like that.

Now that Toni Braxton

has settled her differences

with LaFace Records, she

is in the studio working on

her next project. Oddly enough, it will be released

on LaFace Records. In

1997 Braxton filed suit

against the record label

claiming her contract was

invalid. LaFace counter-

sued Braxton for breach

of contract, prompting the platinum -selling singer to file bankruptcy. It's a mad-

cap business.

0

efore Peter White became known as one

of the premier guitarists in Smooth

Jazz, he was among the many talented musicians

whose names appeared in

the liner notes of albums,

but not on the cover. As

a side player, he appeared

on all of Basia's recordings

and he played Spanish gui-

tar on some notable Al

Stewart albums. If you

look through the credits

on Stewart's "Year of the

Cat" album, you'll find

Peter credited for guitar.

There's also a keyboardist

called Don Lobster listed.

That too, is Peter White. Peter's publishing credits,

to this day, are ascribed to Lobster Music. Peter

began working with Al

Stewart in I 975.The nick-

name "Don Lobster" came

about during some

punchy down -time when the boys in the band were

amusing themselves by

coming up with goofy

band names. Since Peter

was the youngest, the group thought it appro- priate to give him the most Lawrence Welk and

his Orchestra -like name.

Whelk (with an h) is a

crustacean, so from that grew "Don Lobster and

His Music." Peter does

actually have one other thing in common with Lawrence Welk: He can

play a mean accordian.

he Berklee College of Music in Boston has

long been considered one of the top music

schools in the world. (It was named after its

founder, Lee Berk). Among the alumni are Quincy Jones, Donald Fagen,

Branford Marsalis, Jeff

Golub and Pat Metheny.

Saxophonist Walter Beasley was not only a

student there, he returned

to serve as professor. As

of last semester, Professor

Beasley is teaching a newly

added course to the Berklee curriculum: Smooth Ja77,

0

efore he attended Berklee, Quincy Jones

grew -up in Seattle

where he hung

around with another kid

that made it big in the music business -Ray Charles. Quincy has more than two dozen Grammy

Awards and has produced

everything from Frank

Sinatra's classic "Sinatra at

the Sands" to the biggest -

selling album of all time, "Thriller" by Michael

Jackson. His first love

though, was trumpet.

111

fizzy Gillespie once

gave Chuck Mangione

one of his trademark bent -up trumpets.

After it was stolen, Dizzy

replaced it with a trumpet pendant and told him to be more careful. Chuck still has the pendant. We expect to hear the first new Chuck Mangione

album since 1989 soon.

Ilihile we're talkin' trumpets, trumpeter and flugelhornist Rick

Braun is back in the

studio.This time, for a

collaboration album

with saxophonist Boney James.

Congratulations are in order for Boney. His SweetThing CD has just been certified gold, which means that 500,000 copies have

been sold.

ne last note on the trumpet: Kenny G

was once booked as the opening

act for trumpet legend

Miles Davis, but Miles

insisted that Kenny

close the show.

svvzxZGz_ Compared to he silk seems itchy.

TalayaTrigueros has been the mid-

day host here at The Wave for the

past decade. Every weekday, we

Southern Californians have the

opportunity to tune in to 94.7FM

and hear Talaya on the air. You've

seen the ads that claim people

move here for the cheese. We

think they're moving here so they

can listen to Talaya on the radio.

Thanks to the magic of syndication,

those people can just stay -put now,

she is coming to their town.

The Wave debuted a new

radio program called Smooth

Weekend on February 13th. (a day

before The Wave's 12th anniver-

sary). It is a national, two -hour

weekly radio show that focuses on

Smooth Jazz. Our own Talaya is the

host. She not only spotlights the

music, she talks to the artists who

make it. She gives us all a chance to

really get to know the people

behind the music.You'll hear about

their lives outside of the recording

studio and off the stage. The show

is also about fun. With a name like

Smooth Weekend, the nine -to -five

grind is simply not part of the pro -

gram.Talaya talks with celebrities to

find out what they do with their

free time. She visits with world -

famous chefs, makes stops at luxu-

rious resorts and takes us away for

two perfect hours of indulgence. In

addition, Smooth Weekend treats

us to a live performance each

week. It may be an exclusive

recording of Sade captured live, or

it may be an artist playing an

acoustic set in the studio. Either

way, you have a front row seat.

We invite you to tune in to

94.7 The Wave this Saturday night

at 9:00. It is a great chance to get

to know the people who make

Wave music. It's also a lot of fun to

hang out with Talaya on a Saturday

night. Have a Smooth Weekend!

THE WAVE.
