Wautoma SkillsUSA competitors roll on to state In recent district and regional competition action, Wautoma High School SkillsUSA members Anastasia Dillenberg, Jesus Duran and Colton Belfeuil all secured their spots at the upcoming Wisconsin SkillsUSA Championships in April at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Back in December, Duran took first place in the District 2 Welding Contest held in Wausau, while Belfeuil followed close behind in second. Recently, Belfeuil attended the Fox Valley Technical College Regional event in Appleton and earned first place. Both students have already made their abilities known this and last year with previous wins at the AWI Welding Challenge and FVTC Welding Challenge. In keeping up with the high achievements of her teammates, Dillenberg earned her first win in Welding Sculpture at the FVTC Regionals as well. There are two months until the state contest, and Dillenberg is gearing up to display and present her sculpture to judges for a chance to follow in local SkillsUSA alumnus Olivia Arreola’s footsteps and repeat a win in Welding Sculpture for Wautoma. Arreola took second place in the contest in 2016 and won in 2017. She also represented Wisconsin with a fifth place

finish on the national stage in Kentucky. In contrast to the Welding contest, where students make their welds at the competition with a set blueprint, Welding Sculpture requires the student to do all of their work before coming to the competition.

Students come up with an original idea, create it using any kind of metal they choose, and document the whole process in a portfolio with such details as working drawings, a bill of materials and highlights of the construction process to show off welding and fabrication talents.

Colton Belfeuil and Anastasia Dillenberg show off their medals and projects from the Fox Valley Technical College Regional in Appleton. Belfeuil took first place, while Dillenberg secured her first win in Welding Sculpture at the competition. Pictured with Belfeuil and Dillenberg is Jessie Lloyd, SkillsUSA advisor and Fox Valley Technical College welding instructor.

Anastasia Dillenberg recently was photographed putting the finishing welds on her Welding Sculpture project, a dragonfly made mostly from steel rod.

Waushara County Deer Advisory Council to hold first meeting Tuesday, March 13

The Waushara County Deer Advisory Council will meet to review data and form preliminary 2018 antlerless quota, permit and season structure recommendations at 7 p.m. on March 13 at the Waushara County Courthouse.

While this is a working meeting of the council, the public is encouraged to attend and will have a formal opportunity to provide insight during the public comment period of the meeting.

CDACs are part of an effort to provide more public input on deer management issues and give stakeholders

a greater responsibility in managing local deer numbers.

Councils will review and discuss previous year’s hunting season results and long-term harvest trends, accept public comments and develop preliminary antlerless quota, permit and season structure recommendations. Any recommendations will be sent to the National Resources Board for approval in May.

Citizens are encouraged to attend their CDACs March meeting and provide comments to the council. Local Department of Natural Resources staff will be on

hand to present information and answer any questions.

Following the March meetings, an online public comment period will take place from April 2 through April 13, with a final council meeting being held on April 18 to allow the council to review public feedback before making final recommendations on antlerless quota, permit and season structure.

Those unable to attend their county’s meeting can view meeting minutes on the department’s CDAC website at www.dnr.wi.gov.

Picturesque snowfall blankets Waushara CountyA late winter snowfall on March 5 and 6 left 4-7 inches of snow throughout the county. The beauty of the snow puffs on dried flowers was a pretty sight but leaves us longing for Spring tulips.
