Jim Piontek of Jim Piontek Trucking, Green Bay, has par-ticipated in the Waupun Truck-N-Show for seven years.
His company and its 28 employees work with 30 trucks, including owner-operated rigs. They haul general com-modities and “a little bit of everything” to all corners of the United States since Jim Piontek Trucking began in 1979.
Over the years, the Waupun Truck-N-Show has honored many trucking companies and individuals .
Jim’s sons, Nick and Roger, will also be at the show. “We kind of make it a family affair,” Jim said.
During his 33 years in the business, Jim reports that the biggest changes he has seen are rising fuel costs and the always-escalating price of health care.
The following is a list of the parade marshals through the history of the show:
2011 — Bill Shoenike, Shawano, Wis.;2010 — John Drake, Sussex, Wis.; 2009 — The founders of the show included: John Wil-
liamson, Alton Asmus, Steve Wendt, Ron VandeZande and Don Schultz;
2008 — Jason Arneson, Janesville; 2007 — Harvey and Karen Zander, St., Louis Park, Minn.; 2006 — Bill and Carl Brakebush, Westfield; 2005 — Tod Job, Jefferson City, Mo.; 2004 — Wisconsin Motor Carrier Association, Madison; 2003 — Randy and Kathy Smedema and Family, Ran-
dolph; 2002 — Andy Anderson, Forreston, Ill.; 2001 — Jerry and Carol Weiland, Wautoma; 2000 — Jerry Rens and family, Waupun; 1999 — Dennis Hilker and family, New London; 1998 — Don Feucht, Lomira; 1997 — Wayne Glover, Rochelle, Ill.; 1996 — Bob Zunker, Horicon; 1995 — John Kreilkamp and Family, Allenton; 1994 — Bill Skinner, Reedsburg; 1993 — Don and Dave Hanefeld, Burnett; 1992 — Joe and Pearl Schicker, Ripon; 1991 — Wilbur Pfeifer, Waupun; 1990 — Ray Jeffords, Waupun.

The Waupun Truck-N-Show committee would like to thank all those who participated in 2011 in the annual event. We had another successful year, with several families benefit-ting from money raised from donations and raffle ticket sales.
We would not have success if not for the many volun-teers, community businesses and community supporters. Thanks to the truckers, motorcyclists, vendors and exhibi-tors from around the country who participated.
We are sorry we cannot name individuals, but there are too many to list.
Thank you also to the police departments and Waupun city departments who help to organize and assist in mak-ing the event run smoothly and successfully.
Waupun Truck-N-Show is a family-friendly event, as it includes activities for all ages. Tim Lyke photoCommittee offers

Many truckers camp out in sleepers, but others camp along the Rock River on the Waupun Truck-N-Show Community Center grounds.
Enjoy a night of camping
Rates to camp along Rock River same as 2011’sat the community grounds for only $45 for the whole weekend (showers avail-able) or $25 each night.
And yes, the rates are the same price as they were two years ago!
We’ve all heard that loud, hollow, “ratta-tattta-tatta” from a huge rig as it slows down while traveling on a road that we share with it.
The Jake brake takes its name from the manufacturer who invented the most com-mon implementation of the technology, the Jacobs Vehi-
cle Systems company based out of Bloomfield, Connecti-cut.
The Jake brake is an add-on engine brake for diesel engines.
Big semi trailers, the 18-wheel trucks that move everything we use, can weigh as much as 80,000
pounds.Stopping them or slowing
them down results in a great deal of wear on the brakes, which have to be replaced frequently.
The Jake brake, as an engine system, causes no wear and tear and can help slow the truck before the wheel brakes need to be applied.
It’s primary use is on long, downhill grades where the wheel brakes would other-wise have to be frequently pumped to keep the truck from gaining dangerous speed.
The Jake brake has only one drawback: it is very noisy.
You may have heard a semi use the Jake brake without realizing what it was. Sometimes when a truck is approaching a stop sign or stop light, it suddenly emits a loud roar, very much like a large lawn mower, for 5 or 10 seconds.
It is the noise that is caus-ing many towns to ban the
use of the Jake brake. But not to worry. They’ll be completely le-
gal in Waupun during the parades.
Though tests have shown the decibel level to be about as loud as a large lawn mower, at night or early morning the low fre-quencies seem to carry a long distance and are very noticeable.
Because it extends the life of wheel brakes and saves money, trucking companies generally lobby against the bans and some towns are compromising by allowing the Jake brake to be used in daylight hours.
Yet more and more signs, with the word Jake brake and the international sym-bol for ”banned,” are cer-tain to appear.
Since the primary use of the Jake brake is to slow the truck on long downhill grades, the technology will continue to be widely ad-opted for use on the open road.

For many drivers, the time they spend shining their trucks for the judging will be worth the effort.
Trophies and plaques, donated by trucking firms, individuals and local busi-nesses, will be on display throughout the festivities and awarded to truckers af-ter the parade on Saturday, Aug. 11.
Competition actually be-gins with milk haulers at 6 p.m. and continues for the “Lights of the Nights” Con-voy on Friday night, with all the entries parked at the
Waupun Community Center after the parade. The milk trucks are judged Friday night, because they are all busy hauling milk on Satur-day.
Saturday’s competition in the other categories begins at 11:30 a.m., before the pa-rade. Plaques and trophies will be given out in over 300 classes, including a special trophy for the “Best of Show” for both nights of the nigh and day competition.
Awards will be based on the general appearance of each vehicle. There will be
between 25 and 40 judges working at the competition — people who know trucks and have been involved with the trucking business.
Trucks are categorized for judging by the tractor and trailer combination.
Some of the categories are broken down further by the age of the truck, with separate awards for differ-ent types of pickups and an-tiques. New this year will be a “Right Off the Road” clas-sification in the truck-class competition. Reefers, which
are refrigerated trailers, and dry vans, which haul gen-eral freight, usually have the most entries.
Most of the trophies will be on display throughout the festivities, with pre-sentations scheduled at the Waupun Community Center after the Saturday parade.
A new software program has been installed this year that will allow for on-line reg-istration, which is linked into the competition and judging programs.
Hundreds of trophies are displayedon a flatbed at the Waupun Community
Center. Awards are given for various categories, following the parade. Total Business Products, Waupun and
Beaver Dam, does a great job every year working alongside the WTNS Committee from start to finish. Annette M. Boelk photo

The Waupun Truck-N-Show has always realized and rec-ognized the importance of the drivers and firms that have led the way in the trucking industry.
One of the first orders of business on Friday night is to honor the veteran drivers ad representatives from the old-est trucking firms.
Pioneer Driver and Pioneer Trucker certificates were cre-ated to give to individuals, companies and organizations that have worked 40 years or more in the industry.
Pioneer Driver recognition is given to those who have driven a commercial truck for 40 years or more.
The Pioneer Truckers certificate is given to a company or organization with owners and employees whose combined experience totals 40 years or more.
Drivers are asked to list the estimated miles they’ve cov-ered and the number of states they’ve driven through.
On Friday, Aug. 10, 7 p.m. all the entrants who have met the criteria will have their entry forms posted at the Waupun Community Center.
The on-stage program will include the presentation of certificates to each of the drivers and firms, honoring them for their distinguished achievement.

Daily & Nightly SPECIALS
Proceeds from this year’s Waupun Truck-n-Show Raffle will benefit a young man whose body has been weakened but whose spirit remains as strong as ever.
Zachary Sprader was not feeling well.
The Waukesha, Wis. youngster thought he may have had the flu. However, on Jan. 4, 2012, he was told he had a rare T-cell, agouti leukemia.
Because of it being an unusual form, medical spe-cialists were unsure how to treat it.
Zach had to go through several treatments of che-motherapy and, on July 3, 2012, went through a com-plete bone marrow trans-plant. However, before this could occur, for two straight weeks the 10-year-old had to undergo chemo treat-
ments every day. His mother, Lisa, has been
living with him at Children’s Hospital around the clock 24-7 and will continue until Zack will come home, which hopefully will be sometime in August.
As of July 15, Zach’s body has taken to the bone mar-row, his cells are growing and his immune system is starting to rebuild itself.
This is excellent news for Zach and his family, which includes mom Lisa Sprader Kukec, stepfather Chris Kukec and sister Ariana Kukec.
Zach loves sports, espe-cially the Brewers, and is busy in many other activi-ties. His spirits are high and he remains a go-getter.
Through this entire ordeal his family, grandparents and friends have giving him
a lot of support. Raffle tickets now are on
sale from Waupun Truck-n-Show committee members and during the show many volunteers will be selling them.
Raffle prizes include two
sets of Steer tires; a night’s lodging at Boulders Inn & Suites, Waupun; a tractor and trailer wash, $100 in fireworks; and much more.
Tickets cost $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing will be Saturday, Aug. 11 at 10 a.m.
Zach Sprader is joined in his hospital room by stepdad Chris Kukec, Ariana Kukec and his mother, Lisa Sprader.

High bidders determine the lead positions in the an-nual pair of parades, which are part of the Waupun Truck-N-Show. Both truck-ers and their companies bid for the up-front positions at an auction held before the Lights of Night Parade and then again before the Satur-
day Ride for Pride Parade. The first few trucks in the
“Lights of Night Parade,” a convoy in the dark, pay for the privilege; the same is true for the larger parade on Saturday.
The money raised is di-rected to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin and the Convoy for Special Olympics.
It is through these gen-erous donations from the truckers and trucking com-panies the wishes are granted for children with se-rious illnesses.
When you get hundreds of trucks parked around the
Truck-N-Show grounds, there is just enough room between for drivers and judges to walk. How would you like to park one of these, this close together and at night, after the night pa-rade? Many thanks go out tothe volunteers who help drivers back and park these big rigs safely after the pa-rades.

Road Safe America works to limit semi truck accidents by focusing on:
• Educating truck drivers and the public about the risk associated with trucks and passenger vehicles shar-ing our nation’s highways through printed materials and media campaigns; en-forcing speed limit laws by supporting law enforcement safety initiatives that prevent trucking accidents;
• Working with policy-makers and elected officials to develop laws that will help prevent injury and loss of life on America’s roadways due to semi-truck accidents and others who help achieve that mission.
Here are safety tips Road Safe America offers to keep truck drivers happy and healthy:
PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
Get plenty of rest before driving. Eat well and stay fit. Driver fatigue and lack of at-tention can significantly in-crease your risk of a crash. Hours of service violations are serious and can threat-en your livelihood or even your life. Stay healthy and well rested, or don’t drive!
PLEASE SLOW DOWNIN WORK ZONES
Watch out for highway construction. Stay alert. Almost one-third of work zone fatal crashes involved large trucks. Most of these crashes occurred during the day. Take your time going through work zones. Give yourself plenty of room, and expect the unexpected.
BE AWARE OF YOUR “NO-ZONE”
Other drivers may not be aware of the size of your blind spots. One-third of all crashes between large trucks and cars take place in the No-Zone areas around a truck. Adjust your mirrors and be vigilant in watching out for vehicles in the No-Zone.
ALWAYS KEEP YOUR DISTANCE
Always leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front of you. In rear-end collisions, regard-less of the situation, if you hit someone from behind, you are considered “at fault.” Large trucks, given their mass, have much greater stopping distances than 4-wheelers. Take advantage of your driving height, and
anticipate hard braking situ-ations.
ALWAYS MAINTAIN YOUR VEHICLE
It can save your life. In-spect your vehicle before each trip, and check your brakes regularly. Brake de-fects are the most frequently cited out-of-service inspec-tion violation. Learn how to inspect your brakes, identify safety defects, and get them repaired before risking your life, and others, on the high-way.
ALWAYS DRIVEDEFENSIVELY
Avoid aggressive drivers and maintain a safe speed. Two-thirds of all traffic fatali-ties may be caused by ag-gressive driving behaviors. Keep your distance and maintain a safe speed. The only thing excessive speed increases is your chance for a crash.
PLEASE FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT
Buckle up for safety and vehicle control. If you are in a crash, a seat belt will save your life and that of others. It will keep you in your seat and allow for you to main-tain control of your truck.
Increasing seat belt use is still the single most effec-tive thing we can do to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways.
ALWAYS WORKTO IMPROVE
HIGHWAY SAFETYOn the highway, and
through safety promotional events, be the professional! Help stranded motorists. Notify traffic safety agencies of crashes, unsafe drivers, unsafe roadway conditions, and other situations that can lead to crashes. Join a “Highway Watch” program, if available in your state. Your participation in public safety events and your perfor-mance on the highway can change public perception!

The Waupun Truck-N-Show committee is all geared up for its 23rd an-nual event.
This is a special time of the year for our community to salute the trucking indus-try for all it provides for our country.
Our community always looks forward to seeing the different rigs, checking out all of the vendors and hav-ing the opportunity to talk to the truckers and their fami-lies who call Waupun their home the second weekend in August.
There is no question on the popularity of the two pa-rades; just take a look at all of the chairs lining the route well before the parades take
place. I would like to extend a
special thank you to the 2012 board of directors for their hard work and direc-tion for this year’s event. They are Ron VandeZande, president; Steve Schaal-ma, vice president; Steve Wendt, treasurer; Brenda Douma, secretary; directors Dawn Stanke, Nancy Kue-chenrighter, Tim Vossekuil and Phil Ruck; and this year we fondly remember board member Roger Huck for all of his years of contributions to the Waupun Truck-n-Show event.
Waupun warmly wel-comes all of the truckers and their families to our community!

Imagine a truck rolling down the street displaying over 1,000 lights!
Organizers of the 2012 Waupun Truck-N-Show plan on “lighting up the night” in Waupun with the annual Lights of the Night Convoy, planned for Friday, Aug. 10, beginning at 9 p.m.
In the past, the Lights of the Night convoys, trucks have indeed had over 1,000 lights on them.
There’ll be more lights than ever; both on the trucks and in the crowds gathered to watch, during the Friday night convoy, through down-town Waupun.
Once the streetlights are turned off at approximately 9 p.m., the parade will begin.
(In case of rain, the light show will be held on the Community Center
grounds.)“We’ve had over 200
trucks participating,” Steve Wendt, treasurer of the Waupun Truck-N-Show said. “Some even shoot flames out of their stacks!
“Everyone who’s gone
is impressed and we’re ex-pecting more trucks and more spectators for the 23rd year.”
The emphasis will again be on trucks with extra lights, and there will be plenty as the trucks roll by.

Many volunteers make for the success of the smooth-running Waupun Truck-N-Show.
Every extra pair of hands or set of feet is appreciated. There are jobs that will last the length of the event and others that will only require a couple of hours. Every single one is important for
the Truck-N-Show to run smoothly.
Some of the volunteers will be directing trucks for parking, registering trucks for parades or competition, directing cars for parking, putting up signs and barri-cades, setting up exhibitors, running messages, help-ing with food and beverage
A fleet of Green Peterbilts are lined up along the entryway to last year’s show. They are owned by Kazmierczak

In Memory ofRoger Huck ~ 1936-2012
This year’s Waupun Truck-n-Show Parade Guide is dedicated to Roger Huck of Waupun. From the time he was very young, Roger had an obsession with trucks. He loved driving them and was a life- long trucker. He drove for many area businesses, most recently for Smedema Trucking. Roger was a member of the Waupun Truck-n-Show committee for over 20 years and was always the first person to send in his truck entry form.

Roger’s Ride
Stanley was Roger’sGorilla that he brought to the show one year and has since become the mascot.
“Thanks Roger, for all the smiles you
will continue to bring!”
