NEWSLETTER 2014-2015 Program Announced: “Educator Effectiveness” Saturday, November 15th Kathy Champeau WSRA Common Core Roadshow Breakfast Meeting (8:30-11:00) All meetings will be held at the Country Springs Conference Center - just oI-94 in Pewaukee. Saturday, February 28th Dr. Michael Ford Breakfast Meeting (8:30-11:00) Engaging Minds in the Classroom The Surprising Power of Joy As more research reveals the importance of affective dimensions in reading performance and achievement, this presentation looks at issues and ideas for developing and implementing a framework to promote joyous effort from learners in classroom literacy programs. We will identify five key guiding principles, five areas for schools to analyze and five contexts in which to take steps forward. We will create a little of our own joy. by sharing some new books and singing a few new songs. This presentation will focus on the changes happening in reading instruction in light of the Digital Revolution. In this workshop, we will look at the features of new texts being used in contemporary classrooms, the lessons necessary for comprehending digital and multimodal texts, and the digital resources available for reading, sharing, discussing and analyzing print-based, digital and multimodal texts. Various online resources, and student examples will be shared. Saturday, April 25th Doug Buehl Breakfast Meeting (8:30-11:00) Sponsored by WSRA Questioning Complex Texts This presentation will examine self- questioning as a foundational strategy for close reading, in particular for navigating an author’s message when “working a text.” As they encounter increasingly more sophisticated texts across the curriculum, readers need to be "mentored" on how to effectively read complex texts in history, science, literature, mathematics, and other subjects. Questioning practices that guide readers through working information-rich texts to address significant questions and “work out an understanding” with an author will be modeled. Demystifying the Common Core State Standards Saturday, September 27th Dr. Frank Serafini Breakfast Meeting (8:30-11:00) Reading Workshop 2.0 Teaching Reading in the Digital Age Understanding CCSS is one thing, but knowing how to implement these standards in meaningful ways can feel daunting. Creating classrooms where ambitious teaching results in students’ abilities to think, read, and write at deeper levels requires careful thought and intentional decision-making. This interactive session will focus on powerful ways to begin elevating students’ abilities to read and think about more complex texts, scaffolding their learning journeys on the way. We will continue our partnership with the Hebron House in Waukesha again this year! The Hebron House provides temporary housing for families that are homeless. This year we hope to once again supply books and pajamas for those staying at the Hebron House for Christmas. Books and pjs. will be collected at our !

credit through Concordia University. Members will be able to sign up for a credit option for work around a single meeting. We will share more information on this option at our first meeting- September 27th. We hope to offer this option in our November, February, and April meetings.
